    Hi
    The only aftermarket air filter is from DNA ( Greece). A little expensive but exactly fits our bike. take care, Freddy

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  10 років тому

      Freddy, Thanks. The DNA filter is much like the K&N filter. There is also a foam filter for the 250L made by UNI Filter in Australia. Can't seem to find out if the foam is fir retardant or not. I shall have email them. Foam is easier to clean.

    K&N is the only filter you need I run them on everything even my chain saw

      Yeah, been using the K & N for quite a while now and am happy with it.

    I love the mod and have no doubt that less air restriction is better. But I think the increased volume could be greater than 60%. The area of a 1 1/8" circle is .994 square inches. The area of a 2" circle is 3.14 square inches. If you double the diameter you quadruple the area. If you consider this opening alone, the airflow could easily be 3 times greater.

      Your math is clearly better than mine. Thanks. That helps my understanding of air flow :-)

    i use k and n air filter install directly to the carp, no air box,and wow power increase a lot, however you need setting to more richer as this done by my mech

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  10 років тому

      You must have done this on a different bike than the CRF250L, as the crf is fuel injected. You said you connected a K&N air filter directly to the Carb on your bike. On the CRF250L, one has to consider the throttle body diameter (38MM), and then create the right amount of air to maximize draw and velocity through the throttle body (thinking out loud here). What motorcycle did you do that modification on?

  • @scarumanga

    Have you found any good reusable filters yet? I hear the UNI don't seal very well and K&N let too much dust in.

      I'll do a review of the K & N filter soon. That is what I am using.

    Question: With my newly installed FMF header and muffler (and EJK) could i possibly go with say, a 3" hole/snorkel???!!!

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  9 років тому

      I would think a 2.5 to 2.75 inch inside diameter snorkel fashioned from rubber elbow would be ideal. A friend of mine has the same setup as you and he uses the 2" inside diameter snorkel the same as I have fashioned. He says it runs great with that, so I would go too much larger. You can always drill a couple 3/4" holes to test if you think you need more, then cover them up again if they didn't help.

    whatever how you modify the air filter, carp, or whatever for more power there is a maximum speed which is set by the factory, and it will not exceed the maximum speed, unless you use power commander to reset the maximum speed

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  10 років тому +1

      Vincent, the maximum set by the factory is a soft RPM limiter to protect the bike from hitting and exceeding red line. That's to protect the valve train, etc. A power commander unit will not change the limitations of the valve train, etc. The EJK unit that I have installed is similar to a power commander, in that I can set the fuel/air mixture in 6 different ways, each way, having 8 different settings, clear across the curve. Since doing these mods, the bike has about 25% more power, that is evident in throttle response, strong acceleration, and increased torque where I need it. I am not trying to increase top speed, just to increase the power and response for the use the bike is put to.

      you can modify the maximum speed by changing the engine block

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  10 років тому

      vincent yap Change the engine block to modify top speed? You don't swap engine blocks like a cylinder head, piston, or connecting rod. You can bore a cylinder within the block, or stroke the engine to increase displacement. Anyway, I'm not interested in top speed. I'm interested in performance at the speeds and conditions I ride in. Top speed is irrelevant in the real conditions of everyday riding. The mods I've done have improved the performance significantly.

    The bike now days has more concentrated strike of sparks
    So even it runs rich the plug only shows white on the surface because how hot the spark is

  • @artthurman3446
    @artthurman3446 5 років тому

    Haha..60% more inlet size, my friend, does not mean 60% more air flow as you suggest. If you do modifications, as a proper performance shop/outfit/team would, meaning one modification...then test. You would find that your increase in perceived improvements was from the removal of the backfire screen. It is better power, with no ECU controller, than any other modification. Note: The CRF250L OEM Air box does not have "air restriction" issues. That is pure urban legend. Real dyno testing will always prove it. The drop in pressure is at the filter. Think about it. How do you get more air than the cam/valve will accept? Certainly not by dropping the air box inlet pressure, which is what you did.

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  5 років тому

      What I know is: Since this video I have the Yoshi Full System exhaust. I have also opened the air box more than this first snorkel mod, and in stages, testing each step. With each new increase in opening (to a point of course), the bike ran leaner which gave the option to enrich the mixture to balance it out again, and with each opening and subsequent enrichment, the bike produced more overall power and more response at low to mid. The engine has the vacuum to draw in more air than the stock air box configuration allows. If the engine was not capable of drawing in more air than the stock box provided, then opening it more would not have caused the mixture to lean out. Yes, the backfire screen also restricted. 'Also' being the operative word. There are thousands of owners doing similar, many of whom have dyno'd the results. We are not imagining the difference ;-)

  • @dick0386
    @dick0386 9 років тому

    Can you do the exhaust and air box without a ejk? Will it hurt the bike?

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  9 років тому

      You should always adjust the mixture if you increase the air flow. The stock bike is set to run very lean without damage, but modifying the air box and exhaust increases available air beyond the bike's ability to adjust. You need the EJK or similar controller to avoid damage to valves from excess heat. You'll likely end up richer than stock mixture for added power. The Fuel controller is what gives you the biggest power boost.

    • @dick0386
      @dick0386 9 років тому

      Alright, I'll just stick to exhaust for now. Thanks.

    • @jarwicz
      @jarwicz 8 років тому

      How do you know how to set the EJK? Say, I put a new snorkel or drill some holes or even change an exhaust (some not famous brand) and then I get this piece of electronic and what do I do? You were quite precise about your air increase, what if I have no idea. Just try which one feels best? what feels the best might not necessarily be best for the bike.
      I never had an EFI bike before so it bugs me

    How's far can you go on a tank with that setup I did the FMF q4 hex /powerbomb exhaust bazzaz efi programmer and airbox the same way now I go through a tank in about 100km but the extra powers definitely worth it . love your vids to great seeing others enjoy the same bike

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  10 років тому

      Hey, d brown, I haven't checked the Fuel economy yet. I'll do that on this tank. I filled up yesterday and recorded the odometer reading. When I work it out at the next fill, I'll try and remember to reply here with the info. I enjoyed your video, riding up that long hill with some snow and frozen lakes :-)

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  10 років тому

      d brown, Okay, I have calculated the mpg on the last fill. And just so we're comparing apples to apples, your MPG (in Imperial Gallons) you are getting with the same mods as me, except that you have the aftermarket exhaust, is: 37.3 MPG. One thing I don't know about your setup is, if you have the 13/42 sprockets as I do. That influences economy. Anyway, I am getting 63.6 MPG. This is down from about 82 MPG when the bike was stock.
      Bear in mind that I calculated the stock MPG in the summer. Right now the temps are below freezing, so I expect better economy when it warms up here. Plus, I can experiment with reducing the fuel in the Yellow Acceleration phase on the EJK, back to 1.5, which is what they recommend for the stock bike, even with airbox mods. I think I can shoot for 70 MPG.
      Also note: I have taken the gearing change's affect on the odometer into account (as best I can), in calculating my MPG. The stock speedo/Odometer is out by at least 5%, then the gearing changes considerably increase the inaccuracy.

    You have more than doubled the size of the air intake from 1.22sq/in to 3.14sq/in, so much bigger. But like the mod, will try it on mine, thanks.

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  6 років тому

      Since then I have found even more air could be processed, so I opened it more with some holes, then increased the fuelling to match. It's all good fun; trial and error ;-)

      +Pravin Maharjan
      Best I can do is give you a link to what I purchased so you can see the item before I made it into a snorkel. Get something like this. It's a common plumbing item. Just squeeze it to the shape of the available space on the air box lid, then outline with chalk and cut far enough inside the line with a keyhole saw to ensure a tight fit. Then squeeze the elbow into the opening so that the recess in the flange of the elbow fits tightly. Then cut the top of the new snorkel on a shallow angle so the top is below the seat pan and the bottom of the opening is 1/4 inch above the air box lid. Then you're done. Here is what I bought. Choose a 2 inch or 2.5 inch inside diameter (of course the clamps will be discarded).

      I corrected it with a Speedo DRD from Twelve O'Clock labs. From the showroom it was about 10% off, then the gearing threw it over 20% off. Now it is correct.

  • @RW-ix2to

    I believe you have much more air than 60%. If you go from the stock snorket at 1.25" ID to a 2" ID, then area increases 112% (if I did the calculator right). www.calculatorsoup.com/calculators/geometry-plane/circle.php

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  9 років тому

      If the stock I.D was 1.25", then a 2" I.D. would represent 60% increase over stock. Your math is incorrect ;-)

    • @RW-ix2to
      @RW-ix2to 9 років тому +2

      BlastsFromTheSaddle In the video you said you'd get a "60% increase in volume" by changing the 1.250 inch diameter stock snorkel to a 2" rubber elbow. It's true that the 2" DIAMETER is 60% greater than the 1.25" diameter.
      But, wouldn't you agree that the AREA of a circle represents the volume of air it can take in? Then the area of a circle 1.25" in diameter is 1.22 sq. inches. The area of a circle 2" in diameter is 3.14 sq inches. That's a 157% increase. (I measured my 2014 stock snorkel at 1.375" diameter, thus my 112% increase for a 2" mod assertion above).

    • @Scoottoots
      @Scoottoots  9 років тому

      R. Wine I have to say that math was never my forte, so you may be right. I get lost when it comes to area as it relates to flow rate. Actually I get lost long before that, lol. Thanks for the clarification.
