Need to know their cost, but I suspect the composite bowmen will end up on the same spot as hand canoneers and slingers as archers actually dangerous to Huskarls but that need a frontline before they get rushed. In fact I wonder if just sticking to infantry would'nt be smarter for the Armenians.

To be fair, they beat a lot of units I didn't think they would be able to defeat. So nice job to the devs for creating a unique unit that still can comprise people after all these years. Their churches will almost certainly cost stone in a future update though, I'm sure of it. Otherwise, this unit seems cool and by no means 'OP'.
I think the sweet spot is...if the unit is 80 hp or less with bad attack rate..they're done. But the beefier units can tank the damage and then get there..the boyars did worse because of how slow they're attacking, though, and still came out on top. And then you have units like huskarls and samurai that would fare ok if they caught them..which with micro they shouldn't be able to come out on top.
They seem quite good. They seem to perform between gunpowder and archer units, which is unique. They performed sort of as expected when compared to the other archer units, beating more melee units, but losing to the other ranged units.
Seems like they'll be a good addition to support infantry later into the game, as seems to be the goal of the faction's design.
Almost All major Asian armies of the time had elite composite bowmen
the unit is basically a leitis but make it unmounted and ranged.
Killing Cataphracts but dying to Huskarls and Karambits feels so counterintuitive
I suppose cost efficiency vs population efficiency is an important factor there.
Cataphracts we’re always kinda weak against mass archers so..

They stand their ground fairly good against some units. If you add a meat shielf like those chonky Warrior Monks, then the damage that the Composite Bows will add is gonna be insane. Time to practice the onager plays lol
It's the only real counter to Armenians. Onagers and heavy scorps... Also towers but who makes towers? Coreans and japanese, but they also have good counters to Armenians....

@@maxmichalik4938 The Ratha lose 2 attack when they do melee damage to the Composite bowmen. They don't lose any attack in ranged mode thanks to the pierce armor.
Super powerful unit for sure. My only gripe is their attack animation, it makes it seem like it will fire 2 arrows.

It’s so ironic that Armenians get elite composite bowmen when half of aoe2 civilizations had elite composite bowmen
I think they wanted to give some ancient flavour to Armenians, since their history... But yes, it is odd and it's a consequence of the original sin of designing bowmen as an evolution of archers in AoK.

The only thing that stops them from being op is they lack thumb ring.
They don't need it, they don't shoot in an arc like other archers. They shoot like a gunpowder unit.
they have 100% hit rate to beginn with! So they only miss the minor attack speed upgrade from it!
@@noragrey7016 too bad they have short range (even with bracer) and slow fire rate. Their melee armor helps them in a crunch though.
@@ville4090 in my opinion they are a bit lacklaster from a historical point of view. From Wikipedia: For most practical non-mounted archery purposes, composite construction offers no advantage; "the initial velocity is about the same for all types of bow... within certain limits, the design parameters... appear to be less important than is often claimed." However, they are superior for horsemen and in the specialized art of flight archery.

Basically, against any other archers sans Genoese, Composite Bowmen will always lose due to their far worse stats. They can work very well however if there's a frontline protecting them.

@elitemxsniper That's my biggest critique of this series. This isn't under game conditions and pathing and engagement time matter more than real stats. Like if the compbow arrived in wide formation instead of narrow and more engaged off the bat, I think they could win a lot more of the fights.
Like others have said, the three main advantages the Huskarl has over archers are, in order of importance:
High pierce armor
High speed
Bonus damage vs Archers
The Composite Bowman really only ignores the first of these, which still makes them an impressive counter against Huskarls, for sure. A Goth player should be wary of an Armenian player snowballing and micro'ing their CBs well.
That being said, CBs don't really have an answer to the Huskarl outrunning them, nor do they resist any sort of bonus damage against archers. So if it devolves into a melee, yeah, the Huskarl will win.

Composite bow : pierce any pierce armour.
Crossbows and hand cannons : am I a joke to you ?
TBF most crossbows which could pierce any armor so easily had a very high reloading time of 10-15 seconds at the very least. Whereas composite bows are really fast to use.
@@akapbhan it's a tradeoff, with bows and crossbows you're limited by the energy your body is able to produce. If it shoots fast, it's not very high-power (extreme case : the chu-ko-nu).
Siege crossbows can get a massively powerful shot if they have a complex crank mechanism to store then release a lot of energy, but they do take some time to reload, sometimes several minutes.
The Houfnice fight was way closer than it should have been.

This is the first time I've ever seen Tarkans winning the combat...
Tarkans are normally Great against archers. They have a lot of hp, and a fairly decent attack, so overkill is not an issue like other cav with less hp that rely more on pierce armor.
Overkill is something many people don't take in account in melee vs archers, this is why huszar magiar or keshik did better than centurions or savar... They have more hp(or more numbers because of being cheaper so more total hp) and a similar kill ratio. Soy they last more killing the same speed.
They were super weird results. The fact they have 2 melee armor but 0 pierce makes them super weak against some ranged units too. Like rathas, it was so weird....

Its crazy they do so well against cav even without micro.
Cav typically has quite a bit of pierce armour. Hence its usual effectiveness against archers.
even with their piercing attack, they are still no match against rattans and imperial skirms (the latter two have high pierce armor)
That's the one that surprised me the most. Rattan archers lose all the special advantages they have against normal archers. I guess they get their bonus pierce armor at a discount and are still decent archers where the CBs are kinda shit beyond their special ability.
They event still lose against huskarl
Composite archers ignore armor, that’s their whole gimmick it’s why they crush a lot of units you would expect them to lose against due to pierce armor, their effective counters are simple though, onagers and hussars will make them easily countered, generally units with range or high speed and hp will beat them due to their low stats
The effect -1 range has on AI-pathing makes the ENTIRE difference here.
On patrol Units stay and shoot as soon as they are in range, blocking the units behind them. In a crossbow vs crossbow fight lines would form as all units aquire targets.
Here the composites must move an additional space before shooting. Thus all rattans can aquire targets instantly, forming a blob. Composites however have to reposition themselves as a crescent before all units can attack. During this time, rattans took out a quater of units already.
Letting the composites run straight into the rattans and fire afterwards may have better effects than what we see here.

No they don't. But at 12+4 attack -6 armor +12 bonus attack they hit them with 22 dmg fast.

Damn, they melted against the organ guns and ballista elephants. Basically insert almost any heavy siege. It happens of course when they don't ignore siege armor.
Siege units are immune to anti-armor effects. If Composite Bowmen could ignore a Ram or Onager's armor, they'd be busted.
I totally expected that on the Organ guns, but it took me a few seconds on the Ballista Elephants before I remembered 'oh, right, they're Siege'.

@@benedictjajo Mangudai are balanced in other ways. They take anti-cavalry bonus damage, they're expensive, and they lack Ring Archer Armor.

The pierce effect does not work against siege, so wagons organs und ballista eles shred them. Otherwise theywould be broken, ignoring a rams 180-195 piece armor

Suffice it to say they are easily outranged and outgunned by plumed archers, Mangudai, cho Ko Nus and longbows - four units that still rule the day
But they aren't a main unit by a long shot, they are a support unit for infantry

That's the point though. They're supposed to counter heavily armored targets, strong against cavalry and melee, and will probably do acceptably well against skirmishers mixing in their own.

Seems like an archer designed to counter cavalry and infantry but loses to other archers. May not be true but this is just my first impression.
It just nullify the strong anti range armors, they are situational, not designed for cavalry but weak against archers.
For example they are good against rattan archers or eagle warriors but weaker, compared to average of archer UU, against huszars and/or not heavily range amored cavalry

Composite bowmen work similarly to the Italian crossbowmen in actual combat, weak against other archers.
Actually not true: compared to FU Arbs, Elite Genoese Crossbows have +10HP, +2 armor and +1 pierce armor, only downside is -1 range, so they definitely win vs other Archers. What will hurt composite bowmen most is the lack of Thumb Ring

Not really. These guys lose some value against enemies that already have low PA. They also can't hurt siege units, as siege is immune to anti-armor effects.

Kind of worthless with no micromanagement. A lot of the bowmen aren't even firing for large parts of ranged engagements, and they also need to focus fire tanky units like War Elephants.

They won vs a lot of infantry that most UU archers lose to and they nearly tied vs high pierce armors that normally counter archery such as the Huskarl, Tarkan, Rattan Archery as well as doing a good job vs Cavalry.
They are definitely not similar to Arbalests at all.

Skirmishers remain cost-effective due to bonus damage, and siege units aren't affected by anti-armor attacks (Composite Bowmen will still deal 1 damage to most siege units).
