The Most Skill-Intensive MTG Format | We Try Dandân
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 гру 2024
- Dandan also known as Forgetful Fish is one of the most complicated and skill intensive Magic the Gathering formats. Two players share one deck, one graveyard and one color (it's blue) and the only creature in the deck that can kill your opponent is - you probably guessed it - Dandan, a 4/1 fish for two blue mana, that relies on Islands on both sides. Players require highly developed skills and a near perfect memory - do Jamin and Thoralf have what it takes to master this format?

Dandan deckdeck listlist
@@christopherlapp4553 who is Dan?
OK, I'll definitely assemble that deck. Looks fun.
I know of a format which would be awesome if you guys made a video about. I used to play it back in the day but have never heard about it since. Its called 5 Colours. 5 players each with a mono-coloured deck. Each player represents a mage of that colour. They sit on a table (preferably round table) in the same way that is shown on the back of a magic card, with their friend colours by their side, and their enemy colours in front of them. For example green sits with red and white mage beside him, and black and blue in front on him. You may only attack your enemies, not your friends, but beware your friend's friend is your enemy, and that's where the game becomes political and interesting (for example if you are green you can gang up with white against black, since he is your common enemy, but white won't gang up with you against blue, because they are friends!)
Once you have defeated your 2 enemies you may then start attacking your friends. Note that your friends can block but can not attack you until they have killed their 2 enemy colours, which puts them in a tough spot, as they get attacked but can not attack back. Spells can choose any target throughout the whole game, regardless if friend or foe. Also note that you cant kill off your last enemy and attack a friend in the same combat phase. If a card says "opponents" that means your 2 enemy colours. If it says "each player" that means all 5 players
Ideally all decks must have a similar power level and cards that are representative of that colour (eg. blue counters or white wrath of god) Back in the day EDH wasnt a thing so we played with 60 card decks, but i think playing edh decks would make it more interesting
Hope you like the format as much as i do, and would love to see a video of it !
"How am I supposed to play around an Act of Treason in a mono-Blue deck?"
The greatest trick Blue ever played was convincing you it wasn't also every other color at once.
Psionic Blast, my beloved. No one ever expects the mono blue burn.
@@GG-dt5hh an actual insane card under certain circumstances. Glad to see the mention.
Isn't the deck not mono-Blue though? They run temple of epiphany and red flashback costs. So it's a Blue Red deck.
@@Bread-lw3rx No red spells, no red deck.
@@GG-dt5hh (Also Mind Bomb, haha.)
I would have liked another round or two of this.
Please do a best of 3!
Yeah, these videos always feel super short
That's my biggest complaint about this channel.
I asked them to do one game because I thought it would last over an hour 😅 if I was there, I would have told them to have another go or two
@@CardmarketMagic I know youtube doesn't like hour+ long videos and I'm sure they would be a pain for yourself to work on but, I am a longform content fiend and would not mind a few longer videos every now and then.

As the creator, I’m glad to see as many Dandan play videos as possible. Everyone should experience Forgetful Fish, whether it is my original list or personalized version. Not some of my favorite card choices in this list but to each their own.
Yoo THE Nick behind Dandan! I wrote an article on ForgetFul fish last year. I loved all your 2 player 2 deck formats. So glad to see the format has taken off
What's the purpose of mind bend? Is there ANY card in the deck it can interact with?
@@Nalianna Change islands to another land type on a dandan to kill it
@@Nalianna Yeah. It's removal. And a niche use for it is to change your Island into a Mountain so you can flashback a Mystic Retrieval in the graveyard. There is one or two other uses that are even more niche.
@@thesvengallideck Thanks. I have a couple other variants that I hope to post sooner rather than later. We'll see.
Toffel casting Dandan without controlling any islands is exactly how I would have messed up.
lol Toffel is my spirit-animal.
Sometimes it's nice to see that even the best players in the world can still mess up something that simple.
yeah, I thought "well played, now Thoralf has a Dandan, and Jamin still can't attack to race". Then I thought "oops" ; )
9:06 I always thought the explanations were done in post. Surprised to know they just stop the game to secretly explain.
Maybe they have a notepad where they write down what they plan to put in the explanations later? Or they do actually stop between turns to record a bit each time.
It's amazing what the general public doesn't understand about audio/visual productions.
They do stop mid recording- it was brought up in a past vid with a guest. I think the Remy commander game he mentioned the recording
Just another detail that makes the cardmarket gameplay vids some of, if not the best paper magic gameplay on yt
It does surprise me as well, I figured interruptions would break the flow of the video, but doing it right there and then does mean that they can spell out what is in their mind to the camera, which is not something you can do as accurately 10-15 minutes later after an entire MTG game.
11:23 - "How am I supposed to play around an act of treason in a mono-blue deck"
I loved that comment! As though islands can't react! :D
Brilliant video, thankyou!
And as if Blue isn't the secondary color in this effect
tbf tapped lands kinda _can't_ react
Unironically one of the best TCG channels on UA-cam. Every video is a banger. You guys are seriously a role model for me in terms of video quality, especially considering you have a German origin. Truly impressive.
100%, the variety and quality is absolutely astonishing, the only comparable paper magic gameplay I can think of on yt is Shuffle up and play
Danke :) that is very kind of you to say. We put a lot of effort in our work and I'm happy when people notice it
I could easily watch another game or three of Dandân. It feels like we’ve only scratched the surface.
We need to _dive_ in.
yeah getting dandân flooded made it very uninteractive
Back in high school I used to love Pentagram as a game mode. 5 players, one for each color (and ideally playing monocolored decks that fit their color). You are allied with your traditionally allied colors (so players to your left and right), and opponent (mechanically, in the game - your allies aren't considered "opponents") to your enemy colors (the ones across you). You can target anything that's legal on the board, but you can only attack your opponents/enemies (or their planeswalkers, and now, battles). Winning condition is both your enemies are out of the game (so you can have allied wins if a player losing triggers both his enemies victories), you have to plan ahead around other people achieving their goals, even if you're not directly in trouble!
Games can be a bit long but it's a very flavoury and diplomatic multiplayer gamemode. I'd love to see your merry band play one out :)
These weird niche format games are great. I'd love to see more Tower games with more people!
We're saving the next Judge Tower video for a very special guest we will be inviting from the US 🤠
I’m so so happy Dandan is spreading, and I hope the original creator becomes aware of its impact
I emailed them, but not sure if the address is still correct
He became aware after having been featured in a RhysticStudies video.
The true madness of this format didn't really occur to me until about the midway point when I realized that truly playing it meant manipulating your opponents draws as well as your own through top-of-library shenanigans. If Jamin had held back from attacking, I could easily see how this might have stretched out into a complicated mess of a game. Hindsight is twenty twenty though. I absolutely would have made the same mistake as him.
Wait until you see two Memory Lapses on the stack 😉
@@Rabid_Wombat And then the opponent lets the counter happen so they can have that spell on the top of the library because they happen to have a draw spell in their hand to recast the spell, but the other guy counters with a draw spell of their own to try and nab the spell first and then that gets countered with another memory lapse...
@@ClanCrusher why use a draw spell when you can just Cycle? Whenever you see someone play a Cycle Land tapped in Dandân you know they are a n00b 😁
was anyone else surprised to learn that the little asides/interviews are being filmed during the game and not after? Thoralf mentioned what he said in his when he drew Dimishing Returns at 9:00. I figured those would be recorded after the game!
Love how everyone who works at card market magic looks like they just woke up… and is living the dream 😎
We are 🤠
Alternate formats are my absolute favorite thing. Keep the Dandân coming!
We need more of this, this definitely seems like it will get better the more experienced the players are.
Would love to see more rounds of each unique format, just to see how you guys really dive into the meta each time. Also, more Judge's Tower - that was the coolest Magic video I've seen in a long time!
Was fun to watch! Wish you guys played more than one round tho :)
I asked them to play BO1 because I thought it would have lasted over an hour 😅 if I would have been there, I would have asked for more games
Sometimes the thumbnail is so good you gotta like before even watching lol
That was fun! I always love hearing the thought process behind the games and seeing your hands. It feels like we're playing alongside you!
Super cool content! Have read about Dandan before but never saw it played. Really interesting format and appreciate that you gave it a shot to showcase it for us.
Love this format! I always take my dandan deck to parties, nothing like tempo attrition after a few drinks haha
Seems like you go to some pretty awesome parties
@@kokioen fr wheres my invite lol
Love the jank formats. Would be especially excited to see y'all bring more unusual formats to the mainstream.
I've never eard about this format before, but it seems like so much fun !!! Thanks a lot for all the efforts you put in each video, the editing is perfect for understanding how it plays out, as always !!!
Dandan! I've always wanted to see this played, and while it was really different than what I expected this time I'd love to see more of it!
It can get far more interesting an in depth than this video showed, they were heavily dandan flooded and it completely broke how the games interaction usually plays out
Glad to see love for Dandan! It's a really wild format
It is :)
The thumbnail is awesome 😂
Yes! I love the videos that showcase weird and interesting formats for Magic. Please keep up the great content!😁
Yes!! Was hoping for this! Best mtg channel
Thank you :) that is so kind of you to say
Full sprinted to this video as soon as i got the notification
These very specific format ideas are great content, always. Dandân, Judge Tower, Single card decks etc. Keep'em coming!
So happy to see this! In the future, I'd like more collabs with the Yu-Gi-Oh crew where you maybe go over classic stuff like Millstone and how the name "mill" leaked into other games, or things like showing off some of the craziest or most important decks in history - The Deck, Sligh, even stuff like (Manaless!) Dredge or Oops All Spells!
This reminds me of a stack one of the guys at my LGS has, where there's no way to deal damage, and the only way to win is via decking your opponents.
Decking is a real threat in Dandân too - late game Diminishing Returns becomes a kill card 😅
Ah the duality of Magic: Toffel knowing everything about the format down to the exact amount of each card in the pile vs Jamin never having played it and just vibing, perfect 😂
I really enjoyed this series, I love how you guys make me smile and laugh as we were playing with you.
Thank you guys❤
Funnily enough, I live in the same town as the artists for Dan dan, Drew Tucker. It’s always a blast seeing cards he painted being loved
Finally put this together and have been playing it for a couple months. It’s been a blast.
I love that you guys present/play lesser known/established formats. Dandan is hilarious! ^ ^ Consider me subscribed!
Thank you! :) Dandân is indeed so much fun
So how does the "confession" bits works in production ?
I always thought they did them after the game, retrospectively, not to stop the flow of the game and all, but with what Thoralf says at 9:21, I'm not so sure !
I always wondered about this ever since I began watching The Command Zone, and now this (wonderful) channel !
This format hurts my head.
But that flavor text on "Telling time" is win.
I feel like a lot of the comedy in this video comes down to just how funny the name Dandan is. That and the thumbnail!
This is great! Love Dandan. Bought a full Dandan deck (mostly on CM 😏) start of the year before it spiked….
Well done! 😎 you knew the format would be a slam dunk
This was excellent and the editing was exceptional! I loved all of the effects and UI elements such as tracking which cards Toffel knew about. Also lmao at the ending.
I love this, seems like a really fun variation to play. Great video as always, thanks!
GOATED format, great to see it on here
I got so inspired that I made my own version using Branded Brawlers (R creature human soldier 2/2 , can't attack if defending player controls an untapped land and can't block if you control an untapped land) As you can imagine it's all about manipulating your and your opponents lands to make favorable attacks/blocks. But there's a twist.... no mountains. You have to rely on treasure tokens to actually put out your BB. Treasure tokens you get either from your opponent being greedy, countering one of your spells or in a way that both have access. Adds the complexity of: if I do this thing it will allow my opponent to create another BB.
If anyone's interested here's my list so far:
[CREATURES]
16 Branded Brawlers
[ARTIFACTS]
5 Bucknard's Everfull Purse
[INSTANTS]
6 An Offer You Can't Refuse
4 Disrupt
2 Early Frost
4 Enervate
2 Remand
6 Mana Short
2 Turnabout
[SORCERIES]
6 Ingenious Mastery
[LANDS]
27 Island
Best format immediately saw video and went to watch haha
Why is this channel suddenly the best mtg content on UA-cam?
Because they are great
I still would love to see you guys play One-Letter Legacy (shortened to 1LL). Basically, build a Legacy-legal deck, but every card in the list apart from Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest MUST start with the same letter. As an example, you can run Swans of Brynn Argoll in combination with Seismic Assault and Serum Powder - since you're playing S, you can't run Volcanic Island, but you can use Steam Vents instead.
This sounds like such silly fun! :D
@@CardmarketMagic I had a friend on IRC years ago who'd test crazy ideas out with me. He beat me once with Elf-drazii (ramping into Emrakul the Aeons Torn) and I think I might have been running Seismic Swans. There's also at least one infinite turn combo with Thopter Assembly and Time Sieve available.
Yay! Been looking forward to this for a while.
Great to see more dandan love. Just put together the list last month with the help of your platform.
Wonderful yo hear! :D
I'd love to see more interesting formats like this, often these kinds of decks needs access to weird or niche cards which the average player doesn't have. I loved watching this video, and other interesting formats like Judge's Tower
Just came across the channel because of the goldfish colabs. Great work guys LOVE the video's !
I get the impression that Thoralf studied for this test and Jamin did not lol
Great shocasing of the format, would have loved it being best of 3 to see more of the unique playstyle this deck can create
I love this format! My friends and I bring it to commander so that people have something to do between pods!
Not as cool as the judge tower, but i love these wierd magic formats! Would like to see more ^^
Love this format! Wish you guys played more than one game of it in the video though
I told them to only play one because I thought it would last an hour 😅 if I was there I would have asked them to throw a few more rounds at it
Great video! Love watching you have fun with crazy formats. More like this!
That was fantastic! I've got to try this out, thanks for introducing me to it guys.
"An act of treason in blue?" Jamin, Jamin... Ray of Command came first! Act of Treason is a Ray of Command in RED! (Yes, I know in modern Magic, the effect is usually red). Great content and video!
Dandan is less just total topdeck mindgames and more a fun intro to the rules of magic with a self contained twist. You get to play magic and feel like you're playing magic with only a single deck!
The channel has been growing like crazy lately, 100k is coming soon!
We're almost at the point of getting that play button! 🥳
@@CardmarketMagic Exciting stuff!
Clicked on this video to watch, but had to like immediately for the ace quality thumbnail
Omg i love you so much. Its DAN-DAN
Mid writing "Don't we share graveyards?" Ok...ok...you got me.
Fun fact: Dandan was named after the Jaws theme. Probably.
I really loved watching this and honestly I get the hype now! It’s a pretty cool format!
oh this was fun, i look forward to seeing more of this format
This one was really good! Thumbnail is hilarious
Thank you :)
"[....]you don't. you lose" and uses his second arm to turn the handshake into an arm hug. Thoralf is gold
Toffel's "give him the wincon" strategy was fishy to me at first but I think actually really smart!
Gg
Lol fishy 🐟
The editing is amazing, well done!
Fantastic! If you enjoyed this, I recommend type 4. It's an even more fun chaotic multiplayer format.
Love that moment when Thoralf just has to give the flavour text of Telling Time. So recognizable
"This format is too hard for me, so I got some better players to try it out instead."
*Video is of his other channel hosts*
Man, what a nice thing to say. Carl would be such a great coworker.
I can vouch that he actually is!
-Jamin
Just built a Forgetful Fish deck of my own. Would love to see more.
That was slick editing with the Visionary Charm
Recently built a Dandân deck and can say it is 100% super fun.
CardMarket committing to showcase all the greatest ways to play ;)
that mountain edit was SICK did not go unnoticed
Building Dandan now! Great video!
Holy shit, what an insane concept. You could easily turn this into it's own genre of card games :o
This is the best video on this channel.
I was going through my common blue cards while watching and when the video ended I came across two dandân
DanDan has taken off. Cardboardtutor tipped me off before the craze
This reminds me of when I first saw Dandan. Jamin continuing to main phase his brainstorms and other high impact spells directly into memory lapse mana was a clear mistake to me, but looking back, I can remember a time not too long ago that it wasn't intuitive. If Thoralf casts memory lapse on his own turn, then Jamin gets to draw the next card. I also didn't see either player cycling lands/casting telling time to pick up memory lapsed cards, though Jamin did mental note away a card he didn't want. Also Thoralf cast a Dandan with no islands, but we can all collectively pretend that didn't happen.
This game has so much depth to it :D

Im working on creating a mono Green format called Llanowar Growth, that only consists on green 1 drop spells.
New dandan-like format idea. Start the game with Eye of the storm and omniscience on the field. Let the game begin!!!
I do not want to have to edit that 🤠 but it seems fun!
@@CardmarketMagic best part is that you can build It with all 5 colors. You Just have ti male sure not to include ways to remove enchantments
Interesting format, heard about it and enjoyed watching how it actually plays out. I heard you follow a deck list with a specific curve to work for both players. Either way, awesome.
Great content! Love you guys ❤
This format is beautiful 💙
Good ol Ray of Command. When I came back to MTG after having started in Ice Age, I was confused why that effect was considered in Red’s pie. I won so many kitchen table games with that card.
So much fun! This actually looks like a lot of fun
I mean to be fair, thoralf definetly had the much better draw.
1:48 That's what I was thinking... Format SOLVED.
Seems odd that the decks don't just contain straight islands but it is funny that you can't cast a Dandan if you don't because it instantly dies. Lol.
And, likewise, your opponent can't attack you.
Does look like a fun variant to play and brush up on Magic strategy fundamentals to boot! ^_^
