Trapping an Eastern Gray Squirrel

  • Set up a Havahart trap to catch an Eastern Gray Squirrel. I used a self triggering Havahart trap which closes the door as soon as the squirrel steps on the trigger plate inside the Havahart trap. You want to make sure your squirrel bait is sitting on towards the back end of the trigger plate so you can make sure the squirrel with get caught. This is a very simple squirrel trap and is very effective at catching them. I do not kill the squirrels and all the animals I catch are released unharmed. This is a much more humane way of getting rid of squirrels as opposed to shooting them. I usually use peanut butter or bird seed to attract the squirrels. This Havahart trap also works for catching cardinals and other birds along with many other animals. Hope you all enjoyed and please don't forget to like and subscribe!

Way to educate him on avoiding traps, then letting him go so he can do damage somewhere else. In some states, like mine, Indiana, the DNR requires trapped pests like squirrels to be dispatched (killed), and not transported. They call them pests for a reason.

If you want to trap a lot of grey squirrels, the type of trap is the most important consideration. I've disposed of 350 grey squirrels since June 2014 from my backyard but most of them were caught when I switched to a new type of trap 3 years ago.
The best solution to a squirrel problem is the Havahart #1083 "Easy Set One-Door Cage Trap for Squirrels and Small Rabbits" I used to use the old fashioned Havahart 1030 traps but I have upgraded to the 1083 and now have 3 of them. It also only has 1 door which makes it much shorter and I thus need a much smaller tropical fish tank to drown them in. You have to order them online, since the big box stores don't stock them for some crazy reason.
This is the most humane way I have found to dispose of grey squirrels and I try and keep the water reasonably clean. The smaller tank uses less water. But most importantly 1-door traps are not only MUCH easier to set but they are also much easier to bait because the squirrel can only enter from 1 direction so the bait only needs to be behind the walk-on platform. You don’t have to “balance” the mechanism the bait sits on, thus the 1083 is also a much faster trap to bait.
(My bird feeders and vegetable garden are both in the back yard and they attract grey squirrels, so I place my traps in close proximity to them. We have an Oak tree in the front yard but I don't have any traps in the front yard except in the fall.)
The other great thing about this trap is that I never have any "set off" by birds. Every time this trap closes, there is a squirrel inside. The 1030 trap was frequently catching small birds, which was a huge waste of time. You will never catch a squirrel, if the trap is closed all day with a bird inside. Use cheap peanut butter for bait. And lure them into the trap with a few shelled peanuts. I then consistently take the carcass to the exact same place in a nearby woods for predators to find. I like to think this causes predators/scavengers to hunt rabbits and other small game much less frequently. I've recently discovered that possums will scavenge grey squirrels if you leave them in the same spot. I like possums, so this is a win-win for me.
At night, I place mouse traps inside the closed 1083 so that only mice can get into them. (this keeps small birds out of the traps) I was surprised to discover a mouse infestation, that I was completely unaware of. The first 8 days I did this, I caught 14 mice behind our garage.

@3.00 The visible part of the door was the inside, the door was fitted back to front, meaning the trigger mechanism wasn't holding the door open. When the door dropped, the squirrel was nowhere near the pressure-plate. The door triggered at 1.49, what released the door?

I used to have a family of these in the tree in my back yard a few years ago. The mother squirrel was one of the meanest things I’ve ever seen. She used to climb to a beach on the tree that was the closest to you while still being a good 10-15 feet up. She’d chew a branch off, aim it right above your head, and then throw it at you as hard as she could. If you so much as stuck one foot outside for more than 3 seconds she’d start barking at you so loud you could hear it from 5 houses down.
Now, I’d be more understanding if I hadn’t already been living in that house for years before she decided to move in. Sadly, she died in one of the most painful ways a grey squirrel can. Her tail was completely flattened by a car before she could move out of the way in time and she was paralyzed in the middle of the road from the hind legs down before one of my neighbors put her out of her misery.
She may have been the biggest jerk in my neighborhood, but she was also a good mother. Thankfully she died right before her babies reached adulthood and not when they were newborns so they were fine.

Squirrels hunt for food by smell and birds hunt for food via their eyes
and you need to consider that when baiting a trap or birds will steal
    a high percentage of food. I use peanut butter on a 1" x 1" X 5" scrap
of wood and some of the peanut butter is facing down so the birds
can't see it but the squirrels can still smell it.
"Havahart 1083 Easy Set One-Door Cage Trap for Squirrels and Small Rabbits"
This trap cost me approx $33 but it is a much better solution for grey squirrels.
Squirrels are becoming a major problem in this country and part
of the problem is a lunatic fringe that insists on feeding & protecting
rodents that happen to look a little cuter than rats.
Both of my neighbors have had squirrels invade their attics and
sustained damage to their homes. I have thus trapped and killed
135 squirrels on my small property since June-2014 and we still have
plenty more to replace them. I then feed the carcass to the fox and
hawks in a nearby woods. Win-Win
I like to think this causes predators/scavengers to hunt rabbits
and other small game less frequently.
(If you consistently take the carcasses to the same exact spot in a wooded
area, scavengers will find them and then begin returning to that same
spot on a more regular basis.)
If you do a weekly google news search for "squirrel + fire", there
are very few weeks when there is not a squirrel caused catastrophe
    somewhere in this country.
Most weeks the number is more than 3.

Well the traps that were set in our attic are either crappy traps, the exterminator doesn't know what he is doing, or this critter is smarter than he looks. All of the above. We need a wildlife expert out here to get these squirrels living in our walls and chimney. Two traps up in the attic for the last two days, nothing. Heard a noise earlier, like trap door had shut, but no other noise after that. Can't see in the attic because it is only a crawlspace and have no ladder to get up there. I would think that if they were trapped I would hear them freaking out in the cage. Dead silence. So my guess is that they tripped the trap somehow, got the food out, and did not get caught. NEXT..... Never hire a cheap exterminator (who knows little about this animal) to do this job, spend the extra money and call a wildlife specialist.

When people buy Havahart traps, they should use a permanent black marker to
write the model number(which is always on the box) somewhere on the trap.
Then after you throw out the box and later decide to do a video, you will know
the model number of the trap you are demonstrating and you can include that
in the video name. I have no idea why Havahart does not stamp every trap
with the model number, so people would have this info for later reference.
I would rename this video to include the model number or at least include that
info in your description. Your video would have more views if people could also
search on the Havahart model number to find it.

Trapping animals is cool to get a close look at them but mean at the same time.

OH MY GOD- These comments are horrid! No compassion at all! Even though I won’t do it, I was curious to figure out how to catch a squirrel that keeps coming up to my house because I feed them -but one eats out of my hand! He’s is so cute I I wish I could make him a house pet. Poor little creature, I’m thankful you let him go.

This type of squirrel can be caught and made into a pet because they are extremely intelligence they will
Play with you after a few weeks.

Regarding to a law in United States, you have just committed an illegal action. It is illegal to release a grey squirrel once you trapped one.
