    I built it. The first couple of times I baited the trap, when I returned the bait was gone and the door was still open. Maybe we've got smaller squirrels. I hit upon fine tuning the balance point. I put a 3" screw in the back of the trap and started hanging large washers on it until a light touch would tip the trap. Bingo!

      Perfect! Yes, sometimes to get it to balance just right you can do what you did. Good job!

    I can see that this works by the weight of the squirrel, not so easily set off as most bought traps. The fact that he makes multiple trips inside is good, it gets his trust before he's trapped. Very good design, maybe some company will buy your design, hope you patented it.

    Excellent build. The only thing I would change is to put a metal cap on the sealed end so they can't chew through it.
    I have a different designed trap made of wood and that's what the squirrel did was chew through the wood.

    Use plexiglass for the rear plug on the metal tube. Being able to see thru the tube will get the squirrel to enter further and eliminate the chance that the squirrel is spooked before he gets to the bait past the pivot point. Trust me, it’ll make a big difference. (Wildlife trapper/relocator)

    Great video, well executed and really fun cinematography. However, I prefer my grey squirrel traps to have a more mortal nature to them. If you want a humane death trap I recommend the A18 grey squirrel trap. it kills instantly and leaves the remains for scavengers without any poison or lead to be ingested. powered by CO2 cartridges it is self resetting and has enough charge for 18 triggerings.

    My 8 yo daughter has suddenly taken to trapping squirrels. She setup a basket with a stick on a string that she can pull and will sit there for hours waiting to catch one. She actually caught one a few weeks ago! But now it's getting too cold, so I'd like to help her build one that she doesn't have to camp. This looks like a great design! Do you have a rough estimate on the cost of the supplies?

    I don't like to modify anyone's designs but I added a pump pellet gun and then pet the squirrel with it in the head area ,
    Squirrel lays around for a while then let's you pick him up , then just take him to a new spot in the woods and release him ,
    He gets lost and can't find his way back to your house ever again or second option you can invite him to dinner with some of his favorite vegetables and you play a joke on him by covering him in Flour .

    How about a design that can catch many squirrels? I want to put it out overnight and hopefully catch many by the morning so I only visit the trap once per day?

    • @chrisnotap
      @chrisnotap  Рік тому +1

      Squirrels do not come out at night. Early morning to dusk is their active time. They are very territorial so they won't approach a trap that has a squirrel in it already.

    • @denniskazich7559
      @denniskazich7559 Рік тому +2

      He's correct about 1 thing. Squirrels come out twice in the day time. No night activity. They don't care about previous smells or human smells on traps. There main concern is getting bait from trap. They do make traps that will get several Squirrels at the same time. You can buy them pre-made or make them yourself. Very effective. Trust me, if you have a lot of Squirrels and they're hungry you'll get them all in one live trap. It's a wire type trap.

  • @mattgies
    @mattgies Рік тому +1

    Looks like the critter has bent some of the wires in the mesh by the time you arrived. I think a more substantial screen material is warranted. Also I don't quite understand why the triangles have different sized holes in them. How does that protect the trapped squirrel?

    • @chrisnotap
      @chrisnotap  Рік тому +2

      Yes he did bend it but it is very strong! The smaller hole keeps the edge of the metal more covered so he can't get to it and injure it.

  • @DougPowell01
    @DougPowell01 2 місяці тому +1

    I use a Havahart (R) live animal trap, about $35, no tools of any kind, assembly time = zero. Bait = Peanut butter is irresistible for squirrels.
    Of course the next question is where do you transplant the squirrel. I use the six-mile rule to a location near trees, vegetation and a water source.
