Eh....I'd like to see him manage to stay out of Purdy's lap on more than half the dropbacks before we praise him too much. I see all the good blocks he's made in the run game, and maybe that's a decent tradeoff. But honestly, the number of times we've seen a DT just wreck him with a bull rush these last two games makes me wish for Spencer Burford.
Can we all just take a moment to give juice his flowers for being Johnny on the spot when Purdy was in trouble? Dude never looks for the accolades or flowers, he's consistently where he's supposed to be, and he always comes through. He and Jennings were cut from the same cloth. They have great situational awareness and they're as tough as a brahma bulls.
Agreed. You only really notice him on the rare occasions he gets the ball, but he's as valuable to this team as anyone with all the other work he puts in.
Thank you for the 1st half context, understanding the changes on film helps immensely learning the whys and hows of the game. Thank you Jonny! your content is second to none.
So much going on the next 2 weeks. Excited to watch the senior bowl and follow all of the info coming out this week and then on to focusing on the SB BABY!!!
The biggest change I felt in the 2nd half on defense was violence at the point of attack. The front seven was getting manhandled early on, but eventually the run-fits were more aggressive and the edges were being set better. That needs to happen from the jump vs the Chiefs; the slow starts have to stop.
Dropping Young into coverage feels like something that has only become prominent later in his tenure with the 49ers, and when it works, it really works. Hopefully Bosa, Armstead and Wilks can talk some sense into him about hustling to the ball no matter what. If Wilks is able to bring out the defense we saw in the second half immediately in the Super Bowl, I think the Chiefs are in for a real treat.
Awesome! Great analysis! Thanks for sharing. Purdy is why 9ers will win the Super Bowl. This kid's football IQ is off the charts. Specifically, his decision-making process. Sure, it takes him a half to get it. But second half of any ball game is his. And the Chiefs will not be ahead far enough for KC to win and endure the 2nd half of Purdy pounding. Plus, the 9ers team is far superior to the chiefs this year. 9ers are more complete, rounded, and balanced. I like Mahomes, but Mahomes magic is going to run out. This Super Bowl, 9ers are going to win. By 10+. Purdy is potentially the next Brady. Only way Chiefs win is if Purdy gets hurt, if Purdy goes down. Purdy's unlike any other qback today. He makes correct in-play decisions, doesn't panic, doesn't make catastrophic mistakes. He may fall, but he doesn't lose his confidence in himself and his team. But most importantly doesn't lose it in himself. The best thing about Purdy is he doesn't have an ego or a chip on his shoulder. He doesn't feel he has anything to lose or prove because he's Mr. Irrelevant. That doesn't matter to him. He just goes out and plays. He just bees himself. And he knows his ability and IQ like no one else does. And that's all that matters to him, because that's all that does matter. His team knows him and knows who he is and what he can do. All this is why he's dangerous. I feel for Reid and the Chiefs. It is impossible to prep for a qback mind like Purdy's because he makes the right decisions during the play. Reid the and the Chiefs defense could have the right and perfect D called, but Purdy will masterfully dissect it like he did the Lions. And the Lions D was no slouch. That's what makes Purdy and the Niners dangerous. Plus, the Niners individual skill talent is exception and better than the Chiefs and key positions. The only thing the Chiefs can do to survive and compete is have and execute an exceptional offensive game plan and limit number of touches Purdy has. Otherwise, Chiefs are in trouble. Chiefs can't make any mistakes. Niners can cause they'll have the ability to recover. Forgot one thing. Purdy's got wicked confidence because he's insanely accurate with his passes when and where he decides to throw. He's the epitome of throwing guys open, a great timing passer. His anticipation is off the charts because of the team's chemistry. This will be the Niners 1st Super Bowl win since Young. It's gonna be great.
Great breakdown. Looks like the oline really decided to stone up in the second. They were playing with fire and aggression. Putting guys on the ground all over the place.
great breakdown as usual. now i know what Bosa was talking about in postgame when he said team defense just had to buckle down and guys needed to do their Jobs. Oren Burks. you can tell how much they are missing Colin Ferrell quickness on the end.
JDFA you are the man and excellent analysis as always. I've been wondering why this defense has struggled against the run when we seem to have more talent now then last year. The first place we look to criticize is DC Wilkes but I'm beginning to believe the loss of Al-Shaair and Ward are being felt more then first realized. They were both so fast, physical and filled gaps well. What are your thoughts on some of the key differences in how we defend the run now vs last year?
#JD. Thanks Jonny for your amazing work and trying to educate us on the game. I think the 49ers caught a huge break by getting KC in the Super Bowl, rather than the Ravens. Mahomes makes any game tough, but the KC roster doesn’t match up to the 49ers, or Ravens. Thoughts?
Gotta say Chase Young really has been looking like he's playing the "I'm going to wait for my contract to do anything" card. I got to imagine other coaches and players notice this too, yet he plays so many snaps. While this game there were a good number of plays where he looked like the #2 overall pick in the draft, still see too much where he gets stood up and doesn't look like he cares to fight anymore.
Dude, to celebrate and prepare for the 49ers back in the Super Bowl, any chance you can get a hold of and analyze the 1994 Super Bowl film where Young threw SIX TDs? My favorite 49er play of all time is the first TD of that game - how MIKE Shanahan got Jerry Rice wide open on Jerry’s favorite route - a Jerry Rice slant/post: He kept the same skill positions in all drive so the chargers were in base 4-3, then on this play had Watters motion from the backfield to flanker with Jerry in the slot. The CB had to go wide for RB Watters, the Chargers in their 4-3 D weren’t ready for a slot, and all LBs stayed on the line for the run fake to FB Floyd, leaving only two deep safeties covering Rice which he split perfectly. Breaking down this game would be a great homage to the Mike and Kyle Shanahan lore - you can compare the father and son tendencies. Would gifr us awesome content despite the week off. Also the blimp view of this game is very hard to find, I’ve tried. And you can teach us how the heck to get the greatest wide receiver wide open despite everyone in the stadium expecting it. Thanks!
Thanks Jonny! Looks like second half defense did a fantastic job of disguising coverage and blitzes in the second half. Did they change anything in their run defense? Or did they simply clean up on their gap assignments? The defensive line felt much stronger in the second half in run defense and pass rush, but I wasn't sure exactly what changed.
Another great video Mr Del Just two things regarding the defense... 1) do you think it would be better if a safety play the nickel position as opposed to a corner given how well Ward played it last year and how well Ryan and Gibson seem to understand the gaps and angles of the position as well? 2) should the "Big DE" make a return because ceiling off the edge wasn't a problem when Eric Armstead was playing that position not to mention the fact he got consistent pressure with his bullrush during that year? Please advise
I've had similar thoughts about the nickel position myself. Considering the nickel is replacing a linebacker, is virtually always part of the run fit, and has to be able to perform virtually every defensive role, that sounds a lot more like a safety than a corner to me. I would guess that there just aren't many safeties who have the speed and quickness to match up against slot receivers from the line of scrimmage. Maybe the best option is someone with experience at both corner and safety...Logan Ryan, anybody? Although to be fair, I don't think Lenoir has been lacking in run defense as the nickel, despite being a pure corner.
@@Wolfeson28 I agree Lenoir is fine I'm just thinking he's best on the outside over Thomas who actually had a decent game And, a safety can probably recognize gaps easier
On that first Detroit TD I remember Brown looking like he took a terrible angle. He's done that many times this season. Am I reading too much into it? There was no mention of it in the breakdown of the play.
People think Juice is superfluous. JTO makes fun of him (in good humor). But all I saw out there was a veteran making veteran plays all game long. From the two fantastic receptions to the multiple key blocks, Juice made me proud to be an old fart. Was hoping Kyle would dial him up for the final TD plunge, but I'm okay with Draino getting it too. What calming veteran leadership. A true safety net/comfort blanket. Everyone is calling the BA catch off the grill lucky. It doesn't freaking matter people. DPI was called on the play and the ball was going to be placed down there regardless. Credit to the Lions DBs though, they kept a hat on the top all game... something they're not known for. The plays of the day were the Purdy scrambles. The decap duck before the tiptoe catch by Juice is my second fave, but my fave was the last run, where the Mike LB, who is there solely to keep the QB from escaping, loses the sprint to Brock's huge gluteous maximi. The BRocket punches the afterburners and he tackles nothing but air. Purdy damn good.
Ya, the thing with JTO for me is, as good as he is at breaking down QB play specifically, he often just doesn't know what he's looking at with a play overall (at least with the 49ers videos, since I only watch the Purdy ones). When JTO went through the Juszczyk catch (the play starting at 8:45 in this video) he spent 5 minutes insisting that Juszczyk was trying and failing to run a *corner* route on that play and complaining about Shanahan asking him to do that. I took one look at the endzone angle and commented, "he's cutting *inside* of a pass rusher off the line and faking a block - there is absolutely no way he's trying to run a corner here".🤣 I speculated that he was probably running a short/intermediate stop route over the middle, I knew JD would correctly identify the play in his breakdown, and sure enough I was right. I also pointed out in that comment that this was very similar to the play against the Cowboys in the playoffs that resulted in Kittle's crazy catch in almost the same circumstances, so it's not like we haven't seen this before. JTO's breakdown of that play starts at 12:48 in his video on this game.
Looking back on this season, feels like every loss we had was a necessary learning curve to get to the SB Losing streak -couldn't score more than 17 pts❌ Browns - failed game winning drive due to missed fg❌ Vikings - failed game winning drive❌ Bengals - failed comeback due to bad defense and turnovers❌ Ravens - failed comeback from ignoring checkdowns and looking for explosive plays❌ GB - finally scored more than 17 pts with a game-winning drive of checkdowns and safe plays✅ Lions - comeback due to good defense and good decisions✅ I also think that had we won on Xmas, we'd be the ones at home now instead of the Ravens We really need to tighten up our defense tho. Warner is to blame intially, but Ambry Thomas is the one who breaks contain on that long run he had help outside he should filled in side. Our gap discipline has been suspect since training camp at all levels.
Thanks for not showing the replays in super slow motion. When the other channels do this, it takes away from the feeling of the play. You instead show the same play from multiple angles with great narration and break downs. Slow motion reminds me of a bad dream when you're running for your life but no matter how hard you try your feet won't run any faster. 😂😂
despite Purdy's arm getting hit on that INT, was it still a high-risk type throw with so many defenders in close proximity to where the ball was headed? looked like it hypothetically would have been a tight-window completion
I’m just flabbergasted that no one mentioned that the ref threw a P. I flag on that long pass play. So many people in the media saying it should’ve been picked cool, BA made an excellent catch but we will still be in the red zone because of the penalty.
@@NightmareonAnyStreet_ Coverage was great until he cut off bumped his route, you can go for the ball, you can't impede the WR's path to the ball during the process which he did, hence the ref through the flag. Picked it up after as there was no point since it was caught. If you watch the play again you can see the cb bump him just a tad to slow him up.
@senselschultz1148 wrong. If it was a PI the refs would've announced it as such and said it was declined by 49ers. What actually happened was the refs said it was no PI on the play not because he caught the pass but because they felt they it wasn't a PI because both were playing the ball
I love your videos but the stock music looping in the background starts to drive me insane by the end. Any chance we could get some extra uploads with no music ? maybe linked in the description as an unlisted video? thank you. i suffer from a sensory disorder that makes these kinds of things a pain
Burford started as the starter, Feliciano came in for Burford after Spencer went down and filled in at both guard spots but did so well he elevates to a top 5 OL guy
Because that's moving Fred to a different position than he's played his whole career, changes the coverage rules he plays with and makes it easier for teams to run away from him
IMO…it was intentional pass interference on Detroit because the corner was beat. The flag was out immediately. If the 49ers were unable to score a TD or even settled for a field goal that would have been a good call by the Detroit corner.
The first run you dissect with #5 up the gut is almost comical how bad the Niners gap integrity was. Almost seemed intentional. The LBs ran to where the DTs were getting double teamed. Doesn’t make much sense. Then the run by #8, guys are walking and watching
Man...at 21:20 from that EZ shot, Deebo had his chance to just pancake the ever living crap outta CJGJ. Guess he passed on it because of the penalty on that cheap shot CJGJ got on the pick in the first half.
At 11:22, Debo is being a Prima Donna. Why the 49er coaches let Debo get away with this all season, I don't know. Debo is blocking for McCaf, but is softly blocking versus driving his man off the field. The defender easily sheds Debo's block and stops McCaf. Then while other Niners help push McCaf forward, Debo just stands around and looks. This half-as$ed team play by Debo has occurred all season long, yet his coaches have not corrected Debo's lazy attitude.
I love seeing Feliciano always hustling to pick up Purdy every time he takes off for a run.
Feliciano has come on nicely
I was thinking the same thing!
Eh....I'd like to see him manage to stay out of Purdy's lap on more than half the dropbacks before we praise him too much. 😂😂
Glad you enjoy it!
Please Breakdown how we can not let kelce beat us and make them throw 2 anybody else #JD49
I'll do what I can

HEY JONNY! Why didn't we see the 5 man front to stop the run like we did in Jacksonville?
Go 9ers!!!!!!
Enjoy the Senior Bowl. Scout some O-linemen for us!
despite Purdy's arm getting hit on that INT, was it still a high-risk type throw with so many defenders in close proximity to where the ball was headed? looked like it hypothetically would have been a tight-window completion
I’m just flabbergasted that no one mentioned that the ref threw a P. I flag on that long pass play. So many people in the media saying it should’ve been picked cool, BA made an excellent catch but we will still be in the red zone because of the penalty.
The throw was on the money, Aiyuk was clearly bumped and impeded, otherwise he was under that ball.
@senselschultz1148 dude played excellent coverage on that play. He stayed over the top of aiyuk and he had every right to the ball as aiyuk
Was Chase Young just taking every play off? He seemed to quit after a 3 sec rush
I love your videos but the stock music looping in the background starts to drive me insane by the end. Any chance we could get some extra uploads with no music ? maybe linked in the description as an unlisted video? thank you. i suffer from a sensory disorder that makes these kinds of things a pain
I miss Aziz
iHop short stack? LOL
🤣🤣
The niners defense has been absolutely atrocious. The lions made self inflicted wounds in the second half.
Like a lot of other fads in the NFL the wide-9 D is being exposed using dbl teams in the middle.
Teams have been doing that against the W9 since Schwartz had it nearly 20 years ago
So was Feliciano always the starter and got hurt? I thought Burford was going a great job too during the season.
Burford started as the starter, Feliciano came in for Burford after Spencer went down and filled in at both guard spots but did so well he elevates to a top 5 OL guy
I felt Thomas overran the play on their first TD. Brown had outside, he should have stayed inside
why not have Warner play the outside and Burks the middle?
Because that's moving Fred to a different position than he's played his whole career, changes the coverage rules he plays with and makes it easier for teams to run away from him
FUCK the senior bowl. We pcking dead last #32 in this years draft homie 😊
LOL. I went to the senior bowl last year when we weren't picking til the 3rd round. Picked one my of senior bowl dudes
Then the run by #8, guys are walking and watching
man this defense is gonna get throttled if they play like this again. embarrassing stuff. great breakdown though.
They really assigned Bill Vinovich the SB, again. He was awful in SF KC SB in 2019.
Man...at 21:20 from that EZ shot, Deebo had his chance to just pancake the ever living crap outta CJGJ. Guess he passed on it because of the penalty on that cheap shot CJGJ got on the pick in the first half.
Bro I tell and show all my 49ers customers your channel if you are ever in yuba City please stop by 1529 clousa hwy Ahmad reshad
Gawd i hope the defense plays good all 4qt in the superbowl or 49ers is getting slice and dice by mahomes
Me too
Both Wilks and in form the 49er defense, are talented but repeatedly inconsistent. Can’t happen. Only one place to look.
He’s been hurt all season
I hope Ryan gets all the practice reps as the 3rd CB, and not Thomas
