I love your descriptions of the paintings. Your use of language makes them come alive. I felt as though I could actually feel the ”crustiness” of the table and the thick dollops of paint spread elsewhere in the painting. I was proud that the Christo Coetzee was South African as I am.
Nice to see someone actually touching the paint! Something I've always been tempted to do (that thick paint is so tactile) but have always been told not to! That's the beauty of owning your own - you can touch it as much as you like!!!
When you speak about the paintings in your personal collection, it seems that much of the pleasure you receive from them is connected to the artist him/herself and their story. Even when you haven’t heard of the artist before purchasing a painting, it sounds as if you go to some pains to find out about them, and their history afterwards. I’d love to hear more from you about this aspect of your collecting. I am enjoying your programs very much and it is quite a pleasure to visit your charming home. Thank you for your generosity.
Love your plumage. I aspire to be a peacock, by chicken is good as well. Birds of a feather all fly together! Yes, your painting is very nice. The texture/tooth adds a great tactile quality. In much of my painting I use impasto and usually straight from the tube. Your home seems to be perfect for being locked down too if you have someone to share it. Enjoy.

i find this one timeless it hasnt dated and could still be relevent today in estates and country houses ..the painting technique is just to be envied , something i will never master in a lifetime..i would put my hand up for this one too..

The feathers remind me in their technique with folk art when they used pieces of plasticine or dough to press into the wet paint and give some texture.
Coetzee gives new dimension to impasto; no pun! :D In regards to the Italian still life: I spotted that piece's frame a few episodes ago, as I have a frame that is extremely similar in shape, detail and that shade of red... Nice film! Yes it's edgy style, a roadkill pheasant would work for me...there's always one on the side locally sadly...they aren't good at crossing the road! Painting style sharp, reminds me slightly of Piper, rather black paint....I like these tales of lifetime purchases. Can you talk about pictures you've owned and then had to sell on, ones you still remember, like the Constable you once had....I hope the chickens don't keep you awake at night!

Once again, another very interesting artist to explore. Love these videos, thank you Philip & Oliver. I love animals, but have to say that dead ones in paintings are not my favourite subjects, but Coetzee's dynamic brushwork and texture is absolutely wonderful. The other painting, "Painting Yellow", his technique somehow remind me of his contemporary artist Reidar Särestöniemi's (Finnish, 1925-81) paintings, and especially his large Lappland landscapes. Some years ago I saw lots of his artwork at the Ateneum Art Museum exhibition, Helsinki, and was mesmerized by his powerful brushwork and colours. Unfortunately, the lousy online images of his works just aren’t able to show their beauty. ps. Philip, your chickens are adorable. What breed they are? Have you already named them? Maybe they should be called Isola & Tion ;-)
I stumbled aross this series while getting over Covid -19. I am a professional illustrator and have always been very intereste in art. I found the series very engaging and informative. If I had any criticism I would have liked each episode to have been longer. It looks homemade but is the better for it. Please keep it going. It has helped me out a lot and I appreciate the passion. Thanks for hosting another mini-home visit and introducing Cristo Coetzee to many of us. So interesting to learn how he both upheld the long tradition of avian still-life as he was about to break free from it. You mentioned Coetzee's use of a tool -- was it a stamping or embossing tool of some sort? (It was hard to tell from here.) Does this technique appear elsewhere in Coetzee's work? Are you aware of other examples, in the realm of figurative painting, of a repeated design or motif made with an instrument other than a brush or knife (either pressed into wet paint or printed on top)?
Check out the work of evert spruce and william lester,. Texas regionalist, when i saw this painting you have i pined it 1950s , great videos ! Inspireing! To known there are collectors out there like you!

Oh by the way my cousin had chickens like that once. They are beautiful but , lol they cannot see very well. Some had to be carried back to their coop to roost at night
Aren't those Polish Chickens??? The subject matter of death in art...we can say not my cut of tea but I can see what your attraction is to the raised details of the paint....its very thick. Somewhat in the same realm but different movement...the french artist Armand Pierre Fernandez aka Arman....his paint was super thick but it held objects. Thanks again guys.
Hello Philip At the conclusion of this video I notice you sitting in front of a portrait displaying a woman replete with a veiled headdress. If I may ask you, who painted this picture sir? My eye was first drawn to the basket's handle (which at first glance was not obviously a handle). I thought it was the bones and beak stripped bare from a chicken. After I figured out there was a basket below the dead chicken carcass, It was much more coherent to my mind. It's a good painting, and the painter should be more well known.
Here we go again Brian, Philip made it abundantly clear that it is a pheasant NOT a chicken. You will do well to pay stricter attention to the wise musings of Philip.

I’m sure others have used similar devices but that particular one was new to me. I’m not able to give you a much more useful reply than that sadly.
Martin Maybe it was just a twig he used? I’ve used just that to great effect.

Oh by the way my cousin had chickens like that once. They are beautiful but , lol they cannot see very well. Some had to be carried back to their coop to roost at night

Aren't those Polish Chickens??? The subject matter of death in art...we can say not my cut of tea but I can see what your attraction is to the raised details of the paint....its very thick. Somewhat in the same realm but different movement...the french artist Armand Pierre Fernandez aka Arman....his paint was super thick but it held objects. Thanks again guys.

My eye was first drawn to the basket's handle (which at first glance was not obviously a handle). I thought it was the bones and beak stripped bare from a chicken. After I figured out there was a basket below the dead chicken carcass, It was much more coherent to my mind. It's a good painting, and the painter should be more well known.
Here we go again Brian, Philip made it abundantly clear that it is a pheasant NOT a chicken. You will do well to pay stricter attention to the wise musings of Philip.

I'm sorry but I thought that was the most hideous painting I've ever seen - honestly sorry
