...I so love when things connect, people connect, mysteries get solved, revelations are made... mind-blowing! serendipity! imagine the millions of unsolved mysteries, questions, connections and equations out there waiting for the last puzzle piece to be snapped into place.... good work, boys!
As mentioned before "Art in isolation" has it all, especially superb Cotswolds house & garden location, great interiors and interesting art, Philip Mould's most profound rendition of all things British !
Love the q & a - I have to admit when Oliver said there were two difficulties filming with an iPhone and the first was filming outside, I touch he might go for the cheap laugh and say the second was filming inside 😆. Seriously though, you are both doing a fantastic job - the quality of the filming is very good and I like how it doesn’t seem forced or over-rehearsed. Really appreciate and enjoy your efforts 🇨🇦
Another enjoyable, fascinating video. How wonderful the world is, when such serendipities occur as to bring you answers to long held questions from total strangers! So interesting to hear the story behind the ‘Choir’ picture! Thank you both Philip and Oliver, once more.
Your first film just showed up on my UA-cam page yesterday, and I've "binged" them all since then. I've long enjoyed your work on "Fake or Fortune" and "Antiques Roadshow", and I am delighted with the friendly, breezy and warm nature of these brief forays into your home and your art collection. It was such fun to learn the information you'd gotten about the musical group painting. It's obvious that that discovery has made your week. I have so enjoyed everything about your films...seeing your charming and ancient home, learning more about art, your delightful dog and son, (not in that order!) and learning about painters I've never heard of before. I love art, and art history, and could listen to you all day . So, from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, thanks for your generous gift of your home and your knowledge.
I once went into a house estate sale and hanging on the wall was a huge shadow box framed group of 12 English miniature portraits. There was a layer of grime inside the glass. Someone years ago had literally glued them onto a velvet backing. I bought the shadow box for $125. I never was so excited to open up a frame in my life. each was perfect, other than the dried glue which quite easily came off with a little patience. The miniature frames were all 9k to 12k gold and had hair and seed pearl reverses. About half were by John Smart. I figured by the monograms on reverse they must have been members of one family. My favorite was a boy holding a pug dog. I sent these to Christie’s at different times and they sold for a total of $74,000. I believe most great art is just hanging out there, waiting to be discovered.
Philip, From the San Francisco Bay Area of California I thank you and your son for the many episodes you have shared with us. I’m a Glasgow lassie sheltering in place here in SF. Please continue to share your expertise with us.
Definitely could never accuse you of being boring Philip (and Oliver) , you are a wonderful host and I’m so pleased I stumbled upon your channel. I studied Sculpture at college in 1979/80 and I’m really enjoying reminiscing my trips to The Tate and the V & A when I lived in England. I’ve lived in Australia since 1982, and didn’t continue with my art studies, but still have an appreciation for it. My absolute favourite portrait has to be The Shipbuilder and his Wife by Rembrandt. I was fortunate to see it on a tour of Buckingham Palace in 2004. It literally took my breath away it was so beautiful. I have since learned that it is also a favourite painting of the Queen herself, so how that for good taste? 😆 Sending you my gratitude for these wonderful little films you are putting together, they sure are helping in my isolation. Kind regards and much love from Julie, Safety Bay, Western Australia 🇦🇺
How marvellous to learn that it was the village potter who was holding the punch bowl in the Gestingthorpe musicians' painting, and what luck with the identification process. When I watched your channel for the first time, I wondered how you were allowed a film crew when in isolation. Please congratulate Oliver.
When you mentioned Tom Keating, I shot back in memory to the series he did on how the masters painted. I loved them, not for the polished presentation, as it wasn't, but the roughness of the presentation. He had a considerable vocabulary in the art he was presenting, there was a bit of a twinkle in his eyes as he did so, as if to say I know them well. When I found out later he was a forger I was not totally surprised and I smiled to myself, he did know. Great series you put together, well done to both you and your son. From Newfoundland Canada, all the best.
I think Tom Keating is a great teacher of art. But, my goodness, I wonder how many potboilers he swapped out while ‘cleaning’ paintings. Did you see the hilarious documentary about Eric Hebborn? Definitely worth a watch.
Dear Philip I love your programs on UA-cam and find it fascinating looking at your private art collection and your fabulous house. I have a portrait of myself painted by Lucien Freud’s son whom I taught at boarding school a few years ago and I believe he is exhibiting now in London. However, I collect art by the Bloomsbury group and I am lucky enough to have originals by V Bell, Roger Fry, Duncan Grant & Frederick J Porter. The reason I am writing is asking if you own any pieces by them and if yes, please do a programme on this fabulous group of artist. On another note: when I was the Chaplain and Master at at school had the statue of the deposition on Christ by Eric Gill in my small chapel one given by Somerset Maugham.
Dear Carl-Frederik Thank you for your kind comment. How lucky you are - I will be doing a couple of programmes on Grant and Bell next week, and I should love to see yours. I am a great enthusiast of the subject. If you send me your email address - art@philipmould.com - I will send you a notification of an online project we are doing too on the subject. Very best , Philip
Dear Philip,Oliver and Cedric. I am so loving your show. I live on an island off the west coast of Canada and your program has been a real joy to me in isolation. Thank you. I've always loved your Tv show but your candour and ease of chat in these shows are so authentic sounding and devoid of usual UA-cam hype. Thankyou. Can't rave enough.
I would say the top challenge when using an iPhone to film content like this is audio. The microphone is so far from the subject that speech is sometimes difficult to understand. A Bluetooth lavalier or even AirPods as a microphone can improve the audio quality dramatically.
Just caught this...from a Californian in isolation. So enjoyable and now I must ‘go back’ and retrace all those others I’ve missed! What fun you’ve provided for an afternoon of indoor exploration! Thank you both for your generous posts!
I really like the way you liken hanging pictures to wildflowers springing up in a complementary way, I think it really expresses the organic way someone who loves all things visual interacts with those things. It's quite mysterious really. Thank you.
Thank you Philip and Oliver for taking the time to put these videos together. A few days ago I was looking up Cedric Morris works, one that came up took my interest. It was called Harding Down. I think this is Hardings Down on Gower. Near Llangennith. Cedric Morris seems to have done a number of works from the area. I know the area because I have notes of a number of farms and cottages there for my photography projects. In this one Cedric Morris painting is a ruined cottage, on the right. I believe this is a farmhouse called West Cathan. I visited it in 2015. I would link to a picture of the actual cottage but I cannot seem to find my film scans at the moment. I shoot a lot of my projects on film. This was on film, and I cannot find it at the moment.
Over the years I have collected numerous paints from watercolours acrylics oils and pencils brushes. But have not succeeded to find pleasure in what I have achieved never satisfied. With the completed picture . I enjoy listening to lectures and art exhibitions even been on painting holidays to Spain and the coast of norfolk. And certainly I have enjoyed listening tò you. In isolation for the past year I feel it is time to try again and express myself at what I have discovered to be meaningful in my life. Thankyou so much for your knowledge I look forward to many more programmes.
Wouldn't it be fabulous if the Potter's bowl in the painting was a true rendition and that had survived the centuries too. Such a great show, thank you.
Thanks again, Philip and Oliver. Great job! These videos are a reason to get out of bed in the morning; well, I can write that they are - at least for me they are... . Philip, I am the same way in regards to how I hang work: to Hell with rulers! Some have the gift of having an eye for this sort of thing. Cheers fro the US. Matthew, (Boston, US). PS Please make the videos a bit longer, say 20-30 minutes?
We have thoroughly enjoyed these programmes and it’s been interesting to see your house and son and of course Cedric. Are we going to have the pleasure of meeting your wife in one of your programmes. We loved your fascinating eclectic mix of art. Incidentally I met you briefly on a rather unusual shoot at Llanthony many years ago Best Wishes Nigel Morgan
What a real treat this series is! Thank you so much for sharing your paintings with us. We are on a strict lock down in the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees, so this is just what I need.
I can't begin to tell you how much I am enjoying these visits to your home from here in Ontario ,Canada while in isolation. Stay safe, stay well , Philip and I hope all of you in the British Isles make it out of lockdown soon.
Dear Mr. Mould, I cannot thank you enough for opening the doors of your lovely abode and for sharing your wisdom. Only the amplitude of your generosity equals the depths of your knowledge. Wholehearted gratitude from a confined organbuilder in Belgium.
My house is full of old masters to Modern. I rotate them. I learn more each time I look. I love the research and scholarship involved. I have made some major discoveries locally at small auctions. Paintings are friends we keep around because they bring us joy. I am positive I have the earliest portrait from life of Johann Sebastian Bach... I would love assistance proving this. I would love to sit down with you and really pick your brain. ....you are full of knowledge that only comes with passion/instinct and 40 years of real observation.
Absolutely loving this series! Thank you so much! One suggestion I would ask is that you consider miking yourself as I sometimes have difficulty hearing everything you are saying.
Once again thanks to yuo Philip and to you Oliver. A big hello to Cedric I love the stories that go with paintings. I used to sell art, at the lower end of the market, and it was the stories as much as the art work that captured people's imagination. I got caught with a fake, an artist called Donald Friend had his lithographs copied on high definition colour photocopier. The only way you could tell was to open the frame and hold up the picture to light on an angle and the lack of graphite reflecting light (in signature) was the clue. Embarrassing all around as I had sent it on for sale with someone else. Australia had big problems with fakes as paper work was not up to standard.
A Limerick from Dublin following your recent revelation on how you hang your beautiful art in that great house: Said the art dealer Philip Mould, I really am rather bold. I hang all my art, Like a drunken Bart! So there, now you've all been told! Thanks for the moments of sanity amid the insanity! PS I was born with a tape measure and spirit level !
Fascinating discussion! Such honest and intimate dialogue in the Q&A. I really appreciate this series and what you and your Son have shared. Greetings from Vermont.
Thank u so much! Your videos are wonderful! My family and I always gather around to watch you posts every evening! We appreciate your passion and are learning so much! Thank you for opening your home and sharing such joy in these troubled times!!!
Philip in Perfect English Ros Byam Shaw describes an Elizabethan portrait you have which was touched up to make the subject more attractive. I would LOVE to see it!
What strikes me about this episode is that I see a family resemblance of the individuals in the middle of the painting. And then we have Philip and Oliver, father and son, filming and producing this channel ! Also, perfect music at the end
Phillip thank you so much for this wonderful series - a generous and intimate exploration of the art you love. I have learnt a lot. Janette ( in South Australia).
Thoroughly enjoying these - thank you Philip and Oliver! BTW I worked in the research room at the National Portrait Gallery, between 1991 and 2002, and so often saw yourself and Piers!! I was then Jill Springall, now Jill Carver - not that I expect you to remember ;) I now live at 9000ft in the San Juan mountains of SW Colorado and am a full time artist - landscapes mostly. It's been a thrill to reconnect and find you here. I adore your passion and am very jealous of your Cedric Morris piece, oh, and the Lucien Freud etching. Wow - this is such a treat - to be able to connect my previous world with my current one. I hope you continue with them - so generous of you to invite us into your home - your enthusiasm is so infectious and a timely reminder of the importance art plays in our daily lives and the solace, escapism and joy it constantly provides.
@@philipmouldco4360 I certainly will - it looks an incredible space! I've had my head buried in painting the Four Corners region for the past 18 years; but this isolation has made me rediscover and reconnect with old friends and previous lifetimes. What a remarkable life you have created - heartfelt congratulations on all your amazing achievements!
this was so interesting. When I do a portrait , I try to capture personality . I think I somewhat capture a bit of my own personality, even when I am painting animals. I love these videos - I hope you keep them coming!
Hello Phillip and thank you for these very interesting videos. As a UEA alumni, (back in the early 80's), I often visited the Sainsbury Centre, which I expect you did too. I saw my first Francis Bacon paintings there and found it difficult to get my head around them! How do you feel about his work and would you ever consider hanging one in your home?
Hello Paul, thank you for your comment. I've discussed this with Philip and we have come to the conclusion that, whilst Bacon's work is highly admirable, he wouldn’t readily hang one in his own home! ES
Thank you so much for your wonderful program. We would like it to continue whether we are in isolation or not, It is absolutely fascinating, I have only just found it and I feel so lucky to be able to view so many episodes. I am rationing them out and we watch one a day and we really look forward to each one. We have always enjoyed Fake or Fortune but love this insight into your home and it's history, you do it beautifully Warm regards Carol and Ken in Australia
Thank you for the lovely films. Agree with you about liking an art work but not having it in the house. I love Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggio but wouldn't want it on my wall.
Another superb video Philip! You explained candidly an occasion whereby you had purchased a fake, or a fake of a fake! There are some exceptional counterfeits in circulation some of which by extremely talented artists. One wonders what makes a piece of art so valuable when replicas may even appear superior?
Once again, thank you for filming these segments. I love the art, the incites you provide and mostly the place these fill in my evening. Would there be a possibility of a continuation after isolation has ended? I really enjoy your other programs, but this has an intimacy that is missing from the other programs.
This was really interesting Philip. I'm in Sydney Australia and I own a Brett Whitely original but its not listed in Catalogue Rainsonne and I'm wondering how to go about having a painting added to a catalogue? I have emailed the Brett Whitely studio and Art Gallery NSW and neither has replied. Thanks Bernie
You’re not boring us! We are all in isolation, and what you’re saying is fascinating. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind words!
What I love about watching this is that it is so unpretentious, unrehearsed and so personal them.
...I so love when things connect, people connect, mysteries get solved, revelations are made... mind-blowing! serendipity! imagine the millions of unsolved mysteries, questions, connections and equations out there waiting for the last puzzle piece to be snapped into place.... good work, boys!
You are a legend. Hope you don’t run out of art to discuss.
Never boring. The armchair chat works well. Love the series.
As mentioned before "Art in isolation" has it all, especially superb Cotswolds house & garden location, great interiors and interesting art, Philip Mould's most profound rendition of all things British !

The musicians are all smiling, they really must enjoy their choir practice!
Thank you Philip and Oliver! I am an old hospital physician, working in a crazy time. You make me smile with each and every one of these episodes.
Thank you so much for your vital work, we are delighted that you are enjoying the series!

Wow... I love your page/site!!! and just discovered it! Thank you
Thank you for joining us. We hope you enjoy watching the other films in the Art in Isolation series.
Thanks Philip and Oliver, for the wonderful inspiration to give us this series of programs. So enjoyable and insightful.

My sister and i enjoy every single of your episodes very much! thank you for sharing with us how arts influence your life at home. Love from Taiwan!
Love being in your "presence" with Oliver and your art. The music really matched the painting!
Time for a weekend Art in Isolation catch up from this week.
Binge watching art!
Many thanks for joining us.
Wouldn't it be fabulous if the Potter's bowl in the painting was a true rendition and that had survived the centuries too. Such a great show, thank you.

Thank you so much for your Art in Isolation posts. They give us something very special to look forward to.
This was a fascinating revelation. I have so enjoyed your talks. Amazing that they were all done with an iPhone too. Thank you so much .
Another superb video Philip! Being ill myself I am finding your videos to be a welcome distraction. Keep up the good work!
How fantastic to find out all those extra details about your painting
What a wonderful surprise. A jolly choir.
I can't begin to tell you how much I am enjoying these visits to your home from here in Ontario ,Canada while in isolation.
Stay safe, stay well , Philip and I hope all of you in the British Isles make it out of lockdown soon.

Mr Mould, thanks for uploading your videos.

So interesting. Especially your comments about portraits. Thank you from Chiang Mai!
Love this series! You have whetted my appetite for art history. Isolation has its benefits, especially for YOUR viewers! Thanks again.
We are delighted that you have a new found interest in art history!
Thank you fascinating answers to good questions.
Great to listen to Phillip Mould speaking about art and what a beautiful home.
Absolutely charming series.
I love this series, eagerly awaiting the next film!

Fascinating discussion! Such honest and intimate dialogue in the Q&A. I really appreciate this series and what you and your Son have shared. Greetings from Vermont.

I hope you continue with them - so generous of you to invite us into your home - your enthusiasm is so infectious and a timely reminder of the importance art plays in our daily lives and the solace, escapism and joy it constantly provides.
It's lovely to hear from you, Jill. Of course I remember you - please do come and visit the gallery once the lock-down period is behind us!
Thanks for sharing the Keating story.
this was so interesting. When I do a portrait , I try to capture personality . I think I somewhat capture a bit of my own personality, even when I am painting animals. I love these videos - I hope you keep them coming!
Not boring at all! Love the Q&A. Fascinating.

Love this, a group of guys Jammin' in Guestingthorpe.
We would like it to continue whether we are in isolation or not,
It is absolutely fascinating, I have only just found it and I feel so lucky to be able to view so many episodes.
I am rationing them out and we watch one a day and we really look forward to each one. We have always enjoyed Fake or Fortune but love this insight into your home and it's history, you do it beautifully
Warm regards Carol and Ken in Australia
We will endeavour to keep bringing you more films!
Thanks so much for beautiful programmes and lovely house and furniture !!! Any chance of piece on ivon hitchens
And thanks for the music at the end!
What a great anecdote.
Adore this man
Thank you for the education you are providing us.
Thank you for joining us for the series.
Wonderful thank you.
Once again, thank you for filming these segments. I love the art, the incites you provide and mostly the place these fill in my evening. Would there be a possibility of a continuation after isolation has ended? I really enjoy your other programs, but this has an intimacy that is missing from the other programs.
Your Gallery on Pall Mall looks amazing, will visit one day hopefully...
You are very welcome to visit one the lock-down is over.
Thank you for the music 🎶 Do you like Brahms? :)
Thank you so much!
I can see that you love history as well as art and I guess they go hand in hand
