The original Psychonauts was one of the greatest games on Playstation 2. That shit was incredibly designed, incredibly written--amazing fucking art, and I can't express how damn happy I am that this review isn't calling it a shitty letdown. Fuck yes The noir/darkness in how the original explored mental illness, and just the darker parts/presentation of the human psyche was and still is one of a kind. Playing it as a kid/teen, I was as disturbed as I was emotionally gripped. What's said and what wasn't said...highly advise that everyone plays these damn games

My siblings recently chipped in and bought me an Xbox XS w/ a subscription/game pass thingy. Just in time before yet another lockdown. And I had heard one or two things about Psychonauts, but wrote it off immediately because the look of the main character made me assume it was a Ratchet & Clank sorta game (which I enjoyed as a younger teen, but it's not my jive now as an adult). My brother mentioned this just came out and strongly recommended I play it - he said it was the same makers as Grim Fandago or something, and I thought meh might as well got nothing else to do. Downloaded it, played it and thought it was pretty sweet. Then I kept playing, and when you think it can't get any weirder, it does. You think the opening area is the expanse of the worlds, and that when you're close to finishing that'll be it. But no, it opens up into a much larger world a few times. I was gobsmacked by the incredible detail of practically every level and how much content there was. The imagination and creativity that went into this, as well as the varying gameplay to keep things interesting is incredible. Every boss battle felt vastly different, the challenges in levels changed and the environments were unique. I found myself playing for entire days (and I haven't done that since I was a teen, as an adult I've lost a bit of interest in games). I was excited for every new area and level, and wanted to explore everything thoroughly. The enemies and the items are so well thought out and logical in regards to place in the Psychonaut universe. The dialogue is funny and cutscenes are interesting to watch (I always skip cutscenes cos I'm lazy but on this I didn't). By far and large I am incredibly perfect this game is. I feel like I haven't come across a game that has felt this well rounded in both gameplay and story since maybe Bloodborne or Hollow Knight (two of my other favourite games). It's been refreshing playing something like this, as I've felt a lot of games of late - just like movies - have been kinda rushed, or have lots of bugs or issues, ideas haven't been roughed out properly, or they're obvious copies of something else. 100% recommend this game to anyone, you can tell the people who made it enjoy making games - it really shows.

My dad downloaded on his Xbox game pass and I must say… this game is being coma’d on. It’s soo good, and I have barely scratched the surface. I have about 8 hours in but this is what I have found: Refined combat experience from the first makes everything feel, flow, and easy to use all simultaneously. You lock on, click, and flick away The level design has improved. From the first Game, the levels and environments you used to explore in that ps2 game feel contained. While they did the most they had, you can tell they were limited by technology alone… this however is what I feel is Psychonauts 2 biggest strength: the scope. You don’t understand how big and how much of a game you have until you start loading the area and then you realize you have maps, ya know with an S, verticality, a massive lack of invisible walls making it a guided free roam experience just like the first. I have visited only 3 brains and they all feel exclusive from each other. 1 mind can feel almost completely different from itself which is amazing in its own right but when you experience the PTSD ridden brain of Ford Cruller, you begin to realize just how creative the game is and how masterful it crafted its storytelling experiences… this is all without talking about perhaps the strongest part of the first and 2nd game: Dialogue + characters+ story The story has some crazy twist and turns, but the dialogue will make you love this game if you pay attention to what’s going on. I just want to take a moment to say that Psychonauts 2 is the best, most heart felt game that I've played in a very long time. The amount of love and soul that was put into this game is absolutely incredible and I believe that every single person out there stands to actually learn something from it that can be applied to every day life.
I personally liked hopping back into brains later to grab collectables, if only to have a proper look at the level design again. Also helps that the dialogue changes on subsequent visits. Great game.
I gotta say after playing it a couple days I absolutely love it, though I do think the combat and collecting weighs it down just a bit. However, the level design is absolutely genius and we really need more games with this kinda charm 9/10 for me
Love this universe. Became a fan in a month and played both games. Maybe this 2nd game feels a bit old here and there on the game structure but man... The story is AMAZING
I can’t wait to start it up today! Remembering the vibrant palates? Of the original such as the Spanish matadors mind and others just gets me hyped on what they can do with an actual budget this time!
Got it on Gamepass not thinking anything of it just wanted a platformer but wow this has so far blown my mind to think nobody talks about this game. This is the standard for what a modern day platforming adventure game should be like. Everybody talks about Ratchet and Clank but this is for sure on another level and far superior. If you buy this; Keep playing til the end even if you’re sceptic! I’m currently at the end scenes and for the last 8 hours my mind’s been shattered and my eyes have been drooling. Can’t recommend it enough
The first Psychonauts is available for only $4 on the PlayStation store But that’s only good until September 30 three more days from now I’m going to buy it for only four dollars
I played when i was like 8-9, the only thing i remember that some puzzles and bosses were really hard, not like new games you have to repeat a level several times in order to get through the game.
I have no nostalgia for Psychonauts. I actually just played the PS2 version 2 months before the release of the sequel. That being said, I have no nostalgia-goggles for this series to impair my judgment of the sequel. The first one was solid, but the second one blew my mind! This game is SO good! Everything from the visuals, the characters, the plot - I even enjoyed the collectibles - everything was fantastic. This is such a creative game

I just finished the game last night, and all I can say is this….I am sooo glad I preordered this. I was a fan of the original and I am very pleased with this game. The story is great and funny, the controller layout I had to get use to due to some Changes (but that wasn’t hard), and the Replayability is just as good as the original. 5 out of 5. I hope they make a 3rd game showing us how they go from Juniors to full fledged agents.
Yeah I just finished Rhombus of Ruin after re-completing Psychonauts 1 and it’s an awesome experience in VR. I only wish it were longer. Hope to see another VR Psychonauts in the future… but now on to Psychonauts 2!
Psychonauts 1 still holds up today which is NUTS to me, I’ve been playing Psychonauts 2 since yesterday and I’m determined to 100% it. Only thing that ruins this for me isn’t on the game but on me, I just see all these collectibles in levels and it’s just disheartening because I wanna get everything, game is still 10/10.
The original game was a favorite of mines. This sequel is a long time coming for fans. I'm happy that the reviews have been overwhelming positive and that shows that the hard work put in by DoubleFine was not wasted nor did they just put out something to make a quick buck. The gameplay and writing makes Psychonauts a classic.
I need to finish the original quick! It’s a classic and I can’t wait to play the sequel once I’m done. It looks amazing! Thanks for this review! These are always the most honest reviews on UA-cam
I can't wait i feel like it's gonna be awsome not only bc it's a direct sequal to an AWSOME IP but a through back to those early to mid 2000s action adventure games like Rachet and Clank
like many other older gamers I bought the 1st on at release. it was an amazing experience. never thought of see a sequel. let alone an outstanding one. I'm only 1hr on on Xbox one gamepass beta. beautiful looking. smooth. not a bit of lag. I'm already in love.
Also, man! All the levels shown in this are the opening/basic levels. Once you get further... they get so insane. Definitely give this a go if you appereciate attention to detail/really incredible visuals.
I first entered Psychonauts with the VR game. I really liked it. I thought "hey, this is a little bit like Monkey Island", without realising Tim Schafer was a common factor. It seems to me the VR game got pretty mixed reviews, but I felt like the psychic powers were well suited to VR, and easier to control. I have now started Psychonauts 2 and it is great. If I have time I will go back and check out the original once I am done with this one.
I’m playing Psychonauts 1 for the first time and the only criticism I have of it is the dates controls, so with that fixed for the sequel I can’t wait to finish 1 and move onto 2

It’s fun and relaxing when I’m not in the mood for shooters, racing games and all these other type of games that leave me with clammy hands
Picked up the first game a couple days ago since was on sale for 99cents, can't wait to try it
I really want to play the first one, I always wanted it but so many good games where coming out on ps2 it slipped my mind, now I really want to find a copy I only do physical copies, I still have all my ps2 games. Dark cloud 1..2..Jak and Dexter 1,2,3 and they did a racing one also..there where so many cartoonish games back then it was crazy, good times tho. I preordered it so happy I did...
@@grafixtiger was free on xbox awhile ago and is gamepass I think its on ps now also
replayed it a couple of weeks ago since its one of my childhood games, definitely worth playing
@@monocleduck1115 Definitely, I started it yesterday and it really olds up well against the test of time, the witty humor is great, and the graphics are not bad on pc, only when the cutscenes hit, I'm hooked on it
@@blindsunn yeah cutscenes feel a little bit weird with that grainy filter over them, but gameplay is really enjoyable and level design is really fucking good
I'm still playing this one. I only get a couple hours after work. So far, I'm loving it. Psychonauts is one of my top beloved games. I think this sequel is lacking a bit of charm and whimsy that the first brought but this game is still ridiculously fun and unique. It's about time! ❤
Lacking charm are you for real this game is outstanding all the work that they put in the whole thing is amazing better than the old graphics one this is by far better than the original version
I'm serious. This is just my personal opinion. I just didn't enjoy it as much as the first one.
rhombus of ruin was SO GOOD, it really made me feel like psychonauts 2 was headed in the right direction
I just watched a Gameranx video from 6 years ago. Jake. Your voice sounds so much cooler now. More gravelly. More...adult. You're the shit, dude. I never buy a game without your recommendation and YOU'VE NEVER BEEN WRONG. Thank you, guys! Keep em coming!
God, this game is beautiful.
Nothing beats a game when passion is at the forefront and not greed and political agendas.
This is absolutely wonderful! Only played the first one a few months ago, but I'm absolutely hyped to hear it ended up good!
I just want to know if they brought back the "milkman, whos milk is really delicious"
I played when i was like 8-9, the only thing i remember
that some puzzles and bosses were really hard, not like new games
you have to repeat a level several times in order to get through the game.
XBOX finally has another hit
Yessir luckily
Not exclusive though
I will get it on PC on stem and play it on Septermber when i will have fhinished yakuza 4 5 6 and alien fireteam elite that iam busy now.
I thought psyconauts would be one of those games from the ps2 era that never got a sequal
I love that we're getting back to 3d platformers!
The first one was a blast on a handful of mushrooms back in 2007, I think. It was good times.
Loved the original. Hope the release a PS5 version.
Doubtful. Microsoft owns the IP
It's a Xbox first party game it's not coming to PS5 just like how the last of us is never coming to Xbox
@@biggestdickus3600 it's on the playstation store fellas 😂😂
@@thebigbronkowski it's not on ps5
@@jiroaisawa3561 yes it is I have one and I can pre order it right now lol
I have no nostalgia for Psychonauts. I actually just played the PS2 version 2 months before the release of the sequel. That being said, I have no nostalgia-goggles for this series to impair my judgment of the sequel. The first one was solid, but the second one blew my mind! This game is SO good! Everything from the visuals, the characters, the plot - I even enjoyed the collectibles - everything was fantastic. This is such a creative game
I mean you’ve got to be an absolute sicko not to love psychonauts
It's a little kids game. There's no argument around that. Bunch of man-children hyped for it. It's cringe-worthy
@@mog_3825 just do u mate , it’s just a form of entertainment until we inevitably die 😂.
it’s fine to not enjoy it and it’s fine for other people to love it , but commenting on people’s post who have an opinion on it , don’t u think your wasting your time 🤷🏻♂️?
@@mog_3825 u must be miserable lol
@@mog_3825 Oh boy you're really upset and sour over something. It's definitely not a kids game - I made the same assumption as you, but once I gave it a go.
Dude, it's really good. Has very adult humour in it, and is definitely more of an adult game than a kids game.
You should stop that negative/nasty attitude and putting down other people for enjoying things. Maybe you'll feel a little less depressed/shitty about life :)
Since "Beyond Good and Evil" I have never enjoyed a platformer so much as I am with Psychonauts 2. Really good 👍 game. 100% recommended
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING!!
I'll have to snag this when it's available for Playstation. I loved the original and miss games like this in general.
Its Not coming to Playstation ever. This is a Xbox first party game.
@@RenzoBC it’s on PlayStation lol. You don’t know what your talking about.
Oh my god, Jake! Dude I had no idea you worked with these guys. You may not remember me.. we knew each other many years ago when I was LevelSave. Great to see you still in the industry.
The art is really quite something I might have to check it out.
Do it! Support these guys! The first game initially only sold 400,000 copies!
My dad showed me this once then I played a couple years later and LOVED IT. I finished this one a while ago and it was amazing too!!!
This looks so good! I absolutely love the original game. Now is a perfect time to play it again.
I'm just a casual gamer, I get bored easily by games... But man this game from the start felt so refreshing...
Best game experience in a long time
This is made with love and lots of creativity 10/10
Hey, uh... buy this game. All of you, now. Go, go buy this game.
I just finished the game last night, and all I can say is this….I am sooo glad I preordered this. I was a fan of the original and I am very pleased with this game.
The story is great and funny, the controller layout I had to get use to due to some
Changes (but that wasn’t hard), and the Replayability is just as good as the original. 5 out of 5.
I hope they make a 3rd game showing us how they go from Juniors to full fledged agents.
Psychonatus 2 is out! Now we will get a new brütal legends like they promised ;)!
This review gives me early 2000s vibes with the psp on the couch and the big box HDTV sitting in the corner and the IBM computer chilling on the side.
I'm so excited for this🧠
Just completed it. Loved it so much that I wanna go back to the original.
Excited for this one, so glad it’s on game pass
Yeah I just finished Rhombus of Ruin after re-completing Psychonauts 1 and it’s an awesome experience in VR. I only wish it were longer. Hope to see another VR Psychonauts in the future… but now on to Psychonauts 2!
Before you play on game pass....
I will play it on the Game pass ...but will definitely buy!!
Psychonauts always made me think of an early 2000’s Nickelodeon show.
Probably cause Raz and Zim share the same voice actor
The guys behind this game knows how to make games. art style, story, gameplay. like the old golden days of gaming
These are always the most honest reviews on UA-cam
ok
I can't wait i feel like it's gonna be awsome not only bc it's a direct sequal to an AWSOME IP but a through back to those early to mid 2000s action adventure games like Rachet and Clank
Plays a collectathon game, complains about excessive collecting 😂 I love you Jake
like many other older gamers I bought the 1st on at release. it was an amazing experience. never thought of see a sequel. let alone an outstanding one. I'm only 1hr on on Xbox one gamepass beta. beautiful looking. smooth. not a bit of lag. I'm already in love.
I preorder so watching everyone saying this game is dope made me feel good about my pre-order
Also, man! All the levels shown in this are the opening/basic levels. Once you get further... they get so insane. Definitely give this a go if you appereciate attention to detail/really incredible visuals.
You guys are on fire! 🔥 🔥
GREATEST COMEBACK IN HISTORY
I usually spoil myself for games nowadays but everyone is praising this so highly and I'm actually glad you made this video spoiler free. thank you.
I'M WAY TOO HYPE FOR THIS GAME!
Every review I watched today said this game is great and its on gamepass so I am sold.
it's only 280GB though! fucking crazy, because i have the original on my xbox one from the microsoft store and its only like 4GB haha.
Game pass also has the first one not the vr one tho
@@jevinday thats interesting I am downloading it now on series x, its saying its 28.48gb.
@@jevinday Jesus that's bigger than freaking COD! Are you sure you don't mean 2.80Gb?
That anxiety level with Compton is cool as hell
I can hardly wait to play psychonauts 2
_Balan Wonderworld cries in the corner_
Excited to hear that’s it’s exactly what it says on the box! Loved the first game, I’ll be sure to buy this one upon release tomorrow!
Too late! Already bought it. Just here to show my love and support for both the game and y’all.
Man this looks beautiful!
I’m so excited for this! It’s been so long! It looks like everything I hoped for
Just finished it yesterday. Wow wow wow wow. So far game of the year. Its level design, creativity and handling of mental traumas is just... Wow
Played the first Psychonauts on the original Xbox 16 years ago and now playing Psychonauts 2 on my Xbox Series X.
Never heard of thus game but it looks like a really fun game.
It's like two cats making cow noises playing the bango on Neptune
Play the first one, now!
I will get it on PC on stem and play it on Septermber when i will have fhinished yakuza 4 5 6 and alien fireteam elite that iam busy now.
I’m playing Psychonauts 1 for the first time and the only criticism I have of it is the dates controls, so with that fixed for the sequel I can’t wait to finish 1 and move onto 2
Before you download it off Gamepass 🙌🏼
This video is so great And I really like psychonauts but will this be on the ps4? Because this is without a doubt one of the games I really want to play.
I doubt it since I think Microsoft owns the developers now
There is PS4 version because of the crowdfunding campaign(PS5 only via BC mode)
Ya it’s on ps4 & plays on ps5 I’m getting as soon as I get of work the day it comes out cant wait
xbox gets it today and playstation gets it tomorrow.
Those of us with GamePass seeing "Before You Buy" hahaha.
