One of my favourite parts of Psyconauts 2, and something that perfectly illustrates the quality of writing and thought that is put into the characters you find in this game, is the Clairvoyance ability. You can use Clairvoyance on pretty much every single character and then see the world through their eyes, and you get too see a visual representation of how they think of Raz. From Agent Forsyth viewing Raz as an annoying recently hatched chick (and then a proper Psyconaut agent once he's earned her respect), to Sasha Nein viewing Raz as a younger version of himself, to Raz's mother viewing him a her baby boy, while Raz's older siblings just view him as a cry baby. It's a fantastically effective way of giving further depth to all of the characters. It's also really fucking funny at times too. Some of the funniest moments in the game for me come from how Raz is viewed by certain characters.
And it's completely optional! The fact that this powerful characterisation tool is left completely to the player's discretion further highlights Double Fine's trust in their game and their players.

Nitpicking a little here but a lot of games have good writing... they're just trying to achieve different things with it. Writing copy for adverts needs to be done differently to a script like Dune, but both can be done well, or poorly.
COD obviously will never have a script as complex as Psychonauts, but that doesn't mean all COD writing is bad for what it's seeking to achieve.

I get what you’re saying, but I think you’re making the same error in judgement as Mr. Up here; a lot of genres don’t lend themselves to this type of writing. Mario doesn’t have a complex story structure connecting the lore of goombas and magical hats in some deeply emotional way, because it doesn’t need to. It’s far more abstract than grounded, because it can be. The “function” of every video game type isn’t the same. I don’t want to think about the societal ramifications of being a humanoid bandicoot while collecting fruit by bashing boxes on moving platforms over lava. If the video chose examples of other Narrative-heavy games, it would have been a better comparison.

@@MMACinephile the idea that cruller's injury was self-inflicted or the entire reveal about Raz's family was practically contradicted by the original game. We know Ford can't be trying to keep his mind torn apart in the first game because he hangs out in the one place that keeps him sane. We know it can't be really easy to put him back together or the psychonauts would've done so already. And if Ford is so tied to Raz's family, the actions taken when an aquato sneaks into his summer camp should've been different.

The story of Psychonauts 2, on the whole, I think it's better than 1.
The one place I think it fails is the other interns.
The way the campers were handled in 1 was better. The way they moved around after every mind and had their own easily missable arcs was funny, often endearing, and fun to hunt out.
The interns only moving around a few times, not having arcs as such, and then gate crashing the finale for some reason? didn't land well at all for me. The way their in the ending annoys me actually.
But that's it. The rest of the story is excellent. The adult characters are excellent, the back story and ways it ties to the original and regrets of the founding Psychonauts is superb. So so good.

The best thing I can say about the game is it is Psychonauts. If all you want is another Psychonauts, you'll enjoy it for sure. And going in, I thought that would be enough for me, but it just wasn't at all. The platforming is neither challenging nor fun. It has very little momentum and your jump just feels week. The combat is just a waste of time -- there's nothing fun or engaging about it at all; it's just pure filler. With the level design in particular, Psyconauts and Psyconauts 2 both use what I like to think is the equivalent of narrative/contextual low floor and high ceiling. There's enough of a low floor that a player can get the gist of what contextually the game is trying to say about a character but also a high enough ceiling that allows the player to equally delve deeper, and if they were interested, find more to gain from the story based off the general quality of contextual storytelling. And that's why narratively Psyconauts can be simple and complex which is super engaging.

Verily BG so metroid dread is a “decent” side scroller
Yet psychonauts is not even a decent platformer
It’s a mediocre platformer with a terrible combat system & without a single challenge and mediocre level design (by level design i mean how a level is structured to be interacted with not just pretty colors and art styles)
Even Raz’s movement in psychonauts is worse than mario in super mario 64! Meanwhile metroid dread is easily one of smoothest games ever
In a world that mario odyssey, ori games, celeste, rayman origins & legends exist, psychonauts is a mediocre game
And remember guys psychonauts is a video game not a cartoon so… level design and gameplay come first
Dialogue, character development & story should be afterthought (and i can even argue the story is mediocre here but whatever)

This video was very well done, and explained exactly why this game is easily my GOTY. The story is well written and has a ton of heart. The gameplay is "clunky" but still felt good to traverse around the game world. The imagination to the levels even if you don't pick up on the theming are still breathtaking to behold. I really hope double fine continues with this series in the future.

I can’t help but feel like Psychonauts and persona 5 say a lot about the human condition through level design. Clearly Psychonauts is superior in this case! But I can’t help shake the feeling how similar the design and pacing are for these two games.

    • @mackielunkey2205
      @mackielunkey2205 3 роки тому +4

Persona 5 has more of a power fantasy feel to its narrative, which isn’t bad, though looking back, I feel a bit disappointed that almost every person whose mind you go into is a scumbag (I’ve heard Persona 5 Royal had a different level though). Like I don’t mind this, but it doesn’t leave a lot of room for character nuance that isn’t the main characters.

I played through psychonaughts for the first time a few days before Psychonaughts 2 came out on Xbox gamepass. It was honestly a trip seeing how a 16 year old game's story seemlessly tranitions into the sequel despite differences in graphical presentation. The way Tim Schafer incorperated all the loose ends into the second game later in the story is nothing short of a masterpeice in game writting. This was a game made with so much love.

It's sad but I am not surprised that I am far more excited about these indie games than I will but for the majority of Triple-A titles. They just don't seem to have the heart and soul that these indie games do. I realize a status quota has to be made for these big studio developers but if it's just to push games out when they are not ready, then I might as well go full indie.

To the point regarding healthcare. I bring this up since I find many people refuse to believe it. Psychonauts's metaphor is on point. I've been in healthcare for over ten years and often WHO YOU END UP WITH AS A PROVIDER IS BLIND LUCK unless you happen to know people in that specialty/community. There are some that are very poorly skilled, and patients don't know and still don't even after a botched job. Healthcare is buyer beware, and it is poor at policing itself. If something doesn't seem right, move on. Your health isn't worth the risk.

I honestly wished you covered on the mental health aspect of the game (though I know there’s a lot of people who touched on it too). I love how compared to the first game, it focuses even more on helping your subjects than getting from Point A to Point B. Raz also doesn’t go into people’s minds without their consent after the Hollis levels, and a lot of people say he’s taking more of a therapist role here. It just makes me think more than laugh though compared to the first game, but I still appreciate it!

This game is beyond words amazing. Every level is so different and so creative. It deals with issues, has humour … the art style, the characters … just beautiful. You have to play it to understand what we’re saying. It may not fit the mould of GOTY award (not movie style, 3rd person), but it definitely is. It’s not cinematic but says so much about society.

Biggest issues for me were the boss fights and the abrupt ending. Yeah the platforming is not the greatest but the creativity and storytelling on display is outstanding and deserves so much more attention than its getting, more than Ratchet and Clank has at least.
The cookoff section alone is one of the best sequences in any game I've played

Hated the cooking section. And I frequently hated the platforming and the combat. And the cooking section was where I finally had enough and switch off the game and never went back. I just found myself not enjoying the things that I really liked about the game, like the story in the characters, because the gameplay just turned me off so much. I hate it when you have a really frustrating time with particular part of a game, but then immediately after is a cutscene that seems to completely gaslight you in regards to how much that part of the game drove you up the wall. I just stop enjoying the story.

9:57 - This is why I don't care for Mario and the like... Yea, when I was a kid I played it on the NES, but even back then I was developed enough to think "Why??". It was kinda fun and fascinating in a novel kind of way. I mean, we all went like "Wow, vidyagaemz!" at some point. But it's no surprise that I ended up a creative looking for more depth in things (most of the time). - I'm just saying, that's why I appreciate games like this, and while games like Mario and Crash and Spyro and so forth look charming, they struggle to retain my attention as an adult, ironically. - I already had trouble with the PS3-era 'Ratchet & Clank' in my early '20s, cause it was just so mindless and the only thing that kept me going was trying to see more of the world, the cutscenes, and collecting things. For a similar reason, I would probably still play the latest game, especially now that it has gone to like DreamWorks or even Pixar level quality.
12:02 - It reminds me a lot of 'Ben and Ed', this similar-looking (and probably similarly janky) cartoonish platformer where you play as a zombie on a Wipeout-like TV-show.
But as goofy and janky and weird as it is, it's quite appreciated and its gameplay is pretty good. - It doesn't have a narrative like 'Psychonauts', but it's similarly creative.

So i got the game and i was surprised on how well optimized it is... and this is a Unreal Engine 4 game. 30 min in and i could see how much passion and dedication they put into this project. I couldn't ignore that, so i immediately bought the game and I'm glad i did. This game and this guy made me restore some faith in the videogame industry.
