I saw this concert....and he is amazing...but to the comments 're getting a better orchestra, this is a community orchestra, made up of people from all backgrounds, they play well for their standards, which vary and amongst the sections . Having been to many of their concerts I can say I enjoy going. At least they are doing it, playing instruments and music they love. Keep it up.
I respect it as community orchestra. But it makes it even more amazing to see suddenly start listening a first class musician of only 13 years old. He has the edge and musicality in a instrument that a lot of times is bland except in high quality musicians.
So yesterday he played at a royal wedding, harry and meghan and in the audience, was the queen and three future kings. Well done Sheku! We are all proud of your acheivements.
the sad part is He is only good enough for a Queen to gawk at. He will never be royalty in the natural sense of the world. How equal is that Human being? commissioned to mere entertainment for Life. She should allow him to verbally entertain her guest, on a philosophical level, participate in social interactions for the youth and the community and the government. Many employers discover that successful musicians have great skill in tenacity, endurance, goal setting, performing, memorization, etc. etc.
I live in America and know hundreds of people who play pieces at this difficulty and harder at his age and younger. There are HUNDREDS of classical music opportunities in America, if you know where to look.
I know ..yes we do...it transforms the mind and heart .. path to success in life ...not to mention living with compassion. I am an amateur classical violin player and it has saved my life in many ways through the decades...esp. playing in orchestras and chamber music.
TwinIceBear, I wonder of the hundreds you know that translate to a world stage, and chart topping classical music charts, not to mention come from a family of equally talented sibling musicians.
Who the heck did a thumbs down? How on earth could anyone thumbs down a talented young man who has his act together and brings others joy? I don't get people. If you are not a classical music fan, that's OK, but don't dis someone who should be respected for having so many virtues (hard work, dedication, commitment...TALENT!)
they must not like classical music and can't stand the sound of it, i do that for rock music that are awfully loud and headbanging and that kind of stuff, but which some people seem to enjoy , we all have different tastes and likes and preferences but must not dis others for what they are good at that others enjoy
A lot of people forget that most of the orchestra concerts in the uk are by "community orchestra, made up of people from all backgrounds". We should be extremely thank full to all that keep them going often using their own money. They give all in the community a chance to experience the arts with out traveling miles and paying out a fortune. What really makes them for the musicians is when top soloists come and play........well done Sheku Kanneh-Mason
Superb - 13 years old... wow- yesterday age 19- he wowed once again at the Royal Wedding! The family has to be the world’s most musical! From little Nottingham in the UK. How proud you all must be over there!!
I think it wonderful to hear the brilliance of this young man no matter who has the honour of providing the accompaniment. I am just reading the House of Music by Kadiatu and it is a miracle that any members of this incredible family got anywhere given the hurdles but from parents to the youngest child these are brilliant people. To hear all these videos of the family playing so well is a privilege. Thank you, Stuart and Kadiatu for your unstinting belief in your children's ability and nurturing the talent against such odds!!
Extraordinary then and simply amazing in 2019! We haven't been this excited and moved by a cellist since Jacquline Du Pre. Sheku Kanneh-Mason is so appreciated for those who love beauty in music. Thank you for posting!
I am a 13 year old cellist also playing the same exact piece and I always use this video to give me motivation and inspiration. Thanks so much for the amazing video!
you really didn't need motivation, you needed achievable goals. This piece is not difficult it just takes managed time. Try Shostakovitch. Thats awesome!
He had been playing for 7 years when this was recorded so considering that I'm learning this piece only having been playing 2 years it shouldn't be too hard to learn. I was able to memorize the first page in two days so keep at it and try your best.
He has no sheet music and everyone else does. I discovered Sheku through his sister Isata, didn't see the wedding but I have the Romance CD. Mr. Mason your family is a blessing and much respect to you and your wife.
7:36 I see you boi! the orchestra was dragging so he subtly waited a sec and got right back on time. Good stuff bro. Shows that natural musical talent was going strong as a 13 yr old.
FAB STUFF...Good Luck Sheku with the BBC YOUNG MUSICIAN FINAL. This Weekend I Agree with Julian Lloyd Webber.... You have a FAB Career Ahead. Posted on 10th May 2016
Brilliant, the young gifted musician with a beautiful and simple facial expression…so we can fully focus on his great musicality without being disturbed…:))
I'm not a muscian, but I noticed Sheku is the only one without sheet music! The gift that God has blessed him with added to his natural talent and apparent dedication! Amazing!
Tout simplement époustoufflant comme performance. Je ne peux m'empêcher de me demander ce que Pablo Casals aurait dit de la relève. Je suis sûre qu'il en serait extrêmement fier.
Such excellence is a product of discipline and devotion to one's craft. God knows how much work his parents put into guiding his path - the same society so quick to tell parents off for sometimes taking the untravelled road with their children here celebrate the achievement. A deep lesson for me - "Talent is cheap, dedication is everything" Betholdo (Michaelangelo's tutor).

Im a 14 yr old, you might not take me seriously because of my name and my picture but i am actually playing this piece at the moment, all i can say is that sheku is a big inspiration and a huge talent to me
The whole orchestra needed badly to retune after the first movement. The beautiful slow movement was hideously out of tune. But, well done Sheku. Brilliant! Tim.
Sadly the orchestra are not equal to him. No disrespect. It's very hard to build a good amateur orchestra and they are quite good, just not a match for an upcoming virtuoso, who may turn out to be one of the absolute best, ever.
His performance is definitely a thumbs up but that orchestra has a lot of trouble with intonation, particularly the violin section. If anything gets a thumbs down, it's the orchestra.
Sheku’s already a pro! It’s interesting how C major is the easiest key to play in on piano but is hard to get in tune on strings. The strings here really are terribly out of tune. Only sound OK when playing with Sheku! He’s fantastic but Haydn’s cello concerto is such a boring piece compared to his trumpet concerto
Why is he a concert cellist and not a drug dealer? Because he has parents who love him and have taught him the pleasure of hard work and dedication. Its not about race at all. Good luck to him and to his amazing family.
talk2me9ja Who said anything about race? That is in entirely in your head. I was referring to his youth and his benefitting from good parenting and his hard work, not his skin colour in which I have no interest whatever. Now you have dug a hole for yourself, stop digging and get rid of your obsession with race. It's not healthy.
talk2me9ja The only person to mention skin colour is you. The racism is on your side not mine. Your obsession with skin colour, colonialism, white oppression etc etc makes you sound bitter, trapped, small minded and rather pathetic. Read what I first wrote again. I refer to good parenting, hard work and dedication. Grow up, open your mind and forget about skin colour and ethnic origin. As this young man shows you, ethnicity is not relevant, the only thing that matters is content of character.
talk2me9ja "It is not about race at all. Good luck to him and his amazing family". That is what I wrote you seem to be as thick as mince. Seems you need to study English a little harder. Maybe you can take a leaf out of this young man's book.
Patrick Gunter these local orchestras were incredibly supportive when Sheku was young we are very grateful. These experiences have enabled him to now play with great orchestras.
Patrick Gunter. Why are they so awful? I'm just learning piano. Just passed grade 2 so maybe my ears are not yet finely tuned to classical music but I would love the chance to play with an orchestra like this.
this proves that if you wish for your children to excel at anything, you MUST RESPECT THEIR PASSIONS AND CULTIVATE THEM. We as parents and elders must put our egos aside and let them flourish in so long as their passions are not harmful to themselves and society and do the best we can to make sure that they are happy and guide them with our knowledge gained through life.

I'd like to see them play or hear them try. hahaha
Professional violinist here, huge fan of Sheku's in 2021 and mother of a 10 year old cellist… this made me so emotional, thank you for sharing!!

Sheku Kanneh-Mason is extraordinary individual to say the least. Here in America we need more young people involved in classical music.

That's so petty lol

I am totally smitten by this music! It has given me so much JOY! BRAVO to the young man!
I am also a 13-year-old cello player, and this video is really inspiring to me! Thanks so much!

LOL everyone’s an expert PS yes I’m a Cellist too
Everyone else has music. He has NONE and on such a complicated piece! SUPERB!!!
Oh that's normal for soloist. Its expected of the soloist to play from memory. You only have sheet music if you are playing a sonata or chamber music.
What a wonderful talent. This will be a big star!
Brings back memories. I did the same when I was 13 with SF Symphony.
this boy is amazing,i could listen to him all day. so enjoyed this x

such an amazing talent in one so young.

This makes me so happy! Matt Dorman, as far as the orchestra is concerned, I sincerely agree with you!!
I'm not a muscian, but I noticed Sheku is the only one without sheet music! The gift that God has blessed him with added to his natural talent and apparent dedication! Amazing!
Soloists usually memorize and play without music; orchestra members play from music.
Thank you Maryanne Pendergast for helping me to understand this.
It would be hard not to memorize when learning learn a piece like this. He played it wonderfully.
Fabulous Sheku from a wonderful family too.

Agree with Matt Dolman. I think the orchestra is amazing. It's an unfair comparison to even a 13-year-old Sheku.

wonderful! - raises the orchestra, ha!

I've read some of your comments. Do you think the young man thought the orchestra was not very good, too?
Somebody's sharp in the violin section at the intro
Yep heard that too...
The whole was out of tune from the orchestra
Lol he really didn't change much facially
Too bad for this echo chamber and a mature house orchestra but God bless sheku.
He’s better than the orchestra is
cello playing excellent! need better orchestra unfortunately.
I respect the crap out of this man but mannn did he rush a lot on that first movement😂mad respect though man this guys amazing
