Gerry Rafferty was a tortured genius. This song was about himself. He loved his music but he absolutely hated the music industry. It cost him his marriage and caused him to drink himself to death. Such a loss!
Wow I know Alot of rock trivia, but never heard that,I always wondered why he wasn't a bigger artist, the dude wrote some seriously intense lyrics if you understand them,by the way not everyone will, relate to that life,y'all are the lucky ones.
This song is so hauntingly beautiful. I agree with you Mel, you can get lost in the music and not pay close attention to the lyrics. But when you do, you understand this is a song filled with sadness and longing. You are very insightful. This song really takes me back in time. Thank you for playing it today, great pic! Have a lovely afternoon ahead :)
This song is one of the best.Gerry Rafferty hit us with a few greats."Right Down the Line",is one you guys would like .The sax in "Baker Street "is killer, this song is an easy listen.Great to put on while on a drive. It is such a vibe.
Love this song. Especially the sax solo. In 1972 Gerry Rafferty was in the Scottish folk rock band Stealers Wheel & had a big hit with "Stuck In The Middle With You". Later on, he went out on his own & then had the big hits "Baker's Street" & "Right Down The Line".
This was a HUGE HUGE hit when I was about 16. It’s so melancholy and evocative, just a few notes and I’m instantly back to a teenager. Another one with that same magic is “Year of the Cat” by Al Stewart.
Jerry left us on 1/4/11 from alcoholism and depression. A MAGICAL Singer/Songwriter. The sax was played by Raphael Ravenscroft who left us in 2014. Gerry is my FAV 70s/80s artist. He belongs in the Hall of Fame. SO many GREAT songs. Night Owl, The Royal Mile, Whatever's Written In Your Heart, Right Down The Line, Don't Speak Of My Heart, The Right Moment, Home And Dry, Get It Right Next Time, The Light Of Love(the most beautiful of his songs). He is also the writer/singer on the MONSTER hit in the mid 70s Stuck In The Middle With You by his band Stealers Wheel. He left us a legacy of GREAT and BEAUTIFUL music. Thank you, Gerry-RIP.
Pronounced Jerry. He was from Scotland. It’s about wanting to get out of his contract with Steeler’s Wheel (former band) after they broke up and his record company making it difficult. The saxophone player was recording in the next studio and Jerry asked him to be on his song. It was a last minute decision. Jerry was going to play guitar until he heard the saxophone by Raphael Ravenscroft
Whether it be Gerry And The Pacemakers or this Jerry or others, oyr American friends always have trouble with that name, most often saying, Garry. I have noticed that many times on other videos before:)
Gerry (Jerry) was a bit of a torchured soul, to make it big in music he had to travel to London away from his home and he knew it was killing him. A standout song by a standout artist.
EASILY one of the best songs ever recorded! 💯 As a musician and a songwriter, I can tell you with all my skills and art... This song is FUCKING ridiculously AMAZING! Its the kinda thing we all want to be capable of! 💯 And we never can match... for real!
Baker Street is a very famous street in London England. Where Inspector Sherlock Holmes made his residence [221 Baker Street]. And Madam Tussaud's world famous Wax Museum is displayed. This great song came out in 1978 and made Scottish singer/songwriter Gerry Rafferty a big star. Brilliant!
Just one more of a thousand reasons why the 70s was such an amazing decade for music. so much variety and genres, but so many great artists and groups.
I love seeing beautiful young people’s faces reaction to the music I love and grew up with.. just goes to show we all have a soul, young and old are that can be touched by this magnificent music
For some reason my country of Birth Scotland seems to be able to produce singer/song writers who can pull every bit of emotion out of you with their words. Along with Gerry Rafferty we have Lonnie Donegan, Donovan, Al Stewart, Annie Lennox, Edwin Collins, Paolo Nutini, Emily Sandé, Amy Macdonald and Gerry Cinnamon as solo stars and bands like Del Amitri, Simple Mind's, Big Country, The Proclaimers and Deacon Blue ofcourse there are loads more but for being able to take you on the journey of song with them. In my mind all the above will make your jaws drop, it must be our crap weather that makes us deep.

Check out the Beta Band, Steve Mason, Lau, Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, King Creosote and Frightened Rabbit for more great Scittish acts.
Great reaction! "Baker Street" is a great song. My favorite Gerry Rafferty song is "Right Down the Line". I think you both would really like it too. I look forward to seeing more of your reaction videos. Take care!
When this song came out years ago it actually changed my life. I'd listen to those words and I realized he was talking about me Thanks for sharing it guys
This song just draws you in. Gerry Rafferty from Scotland has done a lot of meaningful music. Always cranked the volume up for that Sax, when played on the radio. So glad it speaks meaningful to both of you.. Cheers.
Lovely man. Neighbour of mine for many years here on the west coast of Scotland. Always had time for a chat and was inspired by the beautiful views of Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran. A perfect place to write such great songs.

It is aso the place the fictional character Sherlock Holmes lived - n the books. BTW "Right down the line " By Gerry Rafferty is the most wonderful song. Major, major love song.
This song is really great. When I focus on the lyrics it is very deep and introspective however, if I only listen to the music, I then feel like I am on a summer vacation lounging by the pool or on the beach, no other song affects me in this way. Excellent reaction.

One of my all time favorite songs. It was very popular around the time I graduated from high school. Heard it everywhere all the time. Every time I hear it I can imagine myself back then with my whole life stretched out before me trying to figure out what to do next. Kind of scary thinking how much has passed since then! That line "just one more year and then you'll be happy" always gets to me. That's the way life is - you're always looking towards the future hoping it'll be better.
One of my favorite songs ever. This is life. We all have been trought this sometimes in our lives. But still have the dream of better things to come. This is so real. I love the line “the city has so many people but it’s got no soul”…..
Same words can be echoed today unfortunately!
Taxi Driver (1976) matches with this vibe. Steely Dan's pessimism as well. Those emo vibes are ahead of its time
London is sadly no different today at all
The fear and loneliness of a city. Especially fear.

Another iconic song that has stood the tests of time. It sounds as good today as it did in 1979.
Gerry was from Gods country!!Scotland!! A genius..
