    Excellent presentation sir, especially about the use of turmeric as a non hazmat indicator. Any vids you can pass along regarding glycerin refining? I am using a distillation process which uses up too much energy and time. Thanks again.

    Truly a Great Chemistry Lesson.
    (I was a lab tech while I was a student at Ohio State so I know how important it is to be engaging when teaching)
    Good Tip for humid environments - such as the Philippines

    @TheWindMillMan I'm not familiar enough with that engine to give a recommendation on it. You might try on the Biodiesel Discussion forum though & posting the question there as there's lots of folks from your area posting there on a regular basis.

    TY Mr Blair for your work, Im wondering whether it might be possible to design a system for a diesel -electric hybrid automobile which would allow the driver/owner to purchase all the ingredients needed eg crystal drano , corn oil , rubbing alcoholand distilled water then put each of those individual ingredients in their own " tanks" " dispensers? " then the " machine" located in the trunk i guess would determine how much of each ingredient needs to be dispensed and when the goal being to supply

    @Wurdswurth Yes. You heard right. 6.0 liter diesels & Biodiesel don't do too well together. The older 7.3 liters though LOVE the stuff!! Cummins & Duramax engines do well on Biodiesel as well. Stay away from anything 2007 or newer due to DPF (diesel particulate filter) issues (biodiesel will dilute the engine oil leading to pre-mature engine damage). See our site utahbio dot com for a link to the issue.

    Does Utah Biodiesel have any curriculum available to agriculture teachers? I have a couple of students who want to explore making fuel for the school buses in our school district. We have made a couple of small batches with good success, but would like to have some materials to use in the classroom.

    enough finished product fuel to keep the car going down the road and or charge the battery system if conditions warrant that the car must be stopped for a bit ? I'm assuming brand new oil gotten at wal mart for eg along with the rest of the ingredients and Im guessing that there would be a " waste tank " of some kind that would hold the accumulated glycerine and used water until such time as the car driver can dispose of it properly . Do you suppose such a system might be possible? TY again

    I drive a Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6, would bio cause any short or long term issues for this I do believe its a Peugeot engine LR used, as the miles per gallon on the wee 3 tonne beasty in the hills of Scotland can empty your pockets every week.

    Cool idea's. I'd love to have a diesel-electric hybrid. VW made one in the late 80's/early 90's, but it never went anywhere (diesel was so cheap back then, no one cared).

    HI! Great video, Ilearned a few new triks, but you see.... I have a problem concernig the Methanol!!! I do not have access to it in my country, but I doe have access to regular Ethanol in difrent concentrationes, from 92% to 99.9... %. I could not finde a lot of info on how to titrate a batch using ethanol and sodium hidroxide, to theese two I can have access, I tried to make a few batches, bu one of them I had to re react and the second did not eaven react.

    Did I hear that right @ 49:12? You would not put biodiesel in a 6 liter Ford diesel? Is there any other diesel engines that shouldn't take biodiesel?

  • @UtahBiodiesel
    @UtahBiodiesel  10 років тому

    That would be difficult to do as you need settling time & driving in a car would just mix it all back up. Also, the fuel once settled, still needs to be washed. The closest we've seen someone come is a trailer with a complete biodiesel processor set up in the back for portability.

    hello
    may i know what experimental method you use to separate the glycerin from biodiesel?
    can i use sodium methoxide instead of NaOH or KOH ?

    • @graydonblair3928
      @graydonblair3928 10 років тому

      I just let it settle and then gently turn the bottle over and drain off the glycerin.
      Yes. You can use NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide) instead of KOH. Use a base of 5.5 and be sure & titrate with Sodium Hydroxide if you do.

    • @msaad81
      @msaad81 10 років тому

      thank you ....
      But which is better sodium hydroxide or sodium methoxide ?

    • @graydonblair3928
      @graydonblair3928 10 років тому

      mohd baker Sodium Hydroxide is the chemical we mix with methanol to make methoxide. So we start with sodium hydroxide (solid catalyst), mix it with methanol and it becomes sodium methoxide; which we then use to make biodiesel. So, technically we use both. We dissolve the sodium hydroxide into methanol to make sodium methoxide and then use the sodium methoxide to make the biodiesel. As for which is better, NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide) or KOH (Potassium Hydroxide), both can be dissolved in methanol to make methoxide. KOH tends to dissolve easier though.

    hello i m very interested in this am from UK,
    i have been doing it in my van for a while been doing 50 veg oil and 50 percent diesel
    there seems a lot that i have to learn, can you just add lye 70g and methanol 3 litres mix it up then put into 20 liters

  • @graydonblair
    @graydonblair 11 років тому

    Yes. When Biodiesel is produced & tested under ASTM, they actually do a test for corrosiveness. If it's too corrosive (wears metal on metal), it flunks.

    On the issue of the " waste tank " I was thinking it would be best if it were of a " disposable plastic type " wherin your car simply wont go anymore if you dont have this sealed container replaced at a registered auto shop and replaced with a new one ? The stuff inside isnt necessarily " waste" either it can be processed into soaps or anti-freeze or what have you ? Well such would be the goal anyhow ? Again ty so much for trying to save the world , much as it doesnt deserve it , good luck

    There is no info on UA-cam about that stuff.

    • @graydonblair3928

      I think you might mean Sodium Methylate. If that's the case, there's not much available on how to use it. It's a product that's used in commercial production plants and not easily accessible for small scale personal biodiesel.
      However, if you mean using sodium hydroxide with methanol, that's just mixing it together using a standard titration (as I outline in the video above). You can also stop by our website (utah biodiesel supply-do a google search for it) and look up our titration method

    Yes. You may have to change the pressure on your fuel pump and change out the nozzle, but it works great.

  • @utahbiodieselsupply
    @utahbiodieselsupply 11 років тому

    For ethanol made bio, I believe you need to use about 30% ethanol. Google biodieseldiscussion. It's an online biodiesel forum. Once there, go to the Biodiesel section and then to the ethanol section. They give details on how to do it properly

  • @utahbiodieselsupply
    @utahbiodieselsupply 11 років тому

    It's mainly because it's not a plentiful crop in these countries. There have been some people that have attempted to grow it (in Texas), but it didn't do very well. Soybeans and Canola seeds though are much more plentiful so that's usually what it's made from in these countries. It's extremely rare to see Jatropha though here in the US.

  • @utahbiodieselsupply

  • @utahbiodieselsupply

    Unless they have DPF's installed on them that utilize post-combustion injection cleaning systems (sprays raw diesel fuel in the cylinder after the combustion stroke to vaporize fuel & make it travel down to the DPF cleanse it). Biodiesel doesn't vaporize real well & ends up diluting engine oil in these systems. So much so that you have to watch it very carefully or risk haing really high oil dilution levels; which can damage the engines.
