Seattle hijacker's conversation with air traffic controller

- A MECHANIC stole a plane from Seattle airport and joked with air traffic controllers before crashing into an island.
The married airport employee, 29, "hijacked" the Alaska Airlines plane before performing stunts in the sky as he was tailed by fighter jets today.
Harrowing audio revealed the pilot joking with the controllers who begged him to land the 76-seater plane before it nosedived and burst into a fireball 25 miles away.
At one point, he said: "Hey do you think if I land this successfully Alaska will give me a job as a pilot?"
Astonishing video showed the Horizon Air Q400 doing large loops and other dangerous manoeuvres.
In the chilling recording, he revealed he was a "broken man" and apologised to the air traffic controller.
He said: "I hope this doesn't ruin your day."
The mechanic, referred to as "Rich", said that he wanted to do "a barrel roll, and if that goes good...nose down and call it a night".
He then said: "I wouldn't know how to land - I wasn't really planning on landing it."
The "suicidal" man, who dreamed of joining the military, then said that he had thrown up and that he felt "dizzy".
He added: "I'm sorry about this, I hope it doesn't ruin your day [...].
"Man, the sights went by so fast. I was thinking, like, I'm going to have this moment of serenity, take in all the sights.
"There's a lot of pretty stuff, but they're pretty in a different context."
The married mechanic - who has not been named - crashed on Ketron Island, 30 miles south west of Seattle, at 8pm local time.
He and his wife, who he met in 2010, ran a bakery until it closed in 2015.

He didn't hijack it, he stole it. There's a difference there.
"Unlawfully seize aircraft ship or vehicle for personal use". It was hijacked
@@DelliriiuM No, that is not the definition of hijacked. Most people will agree today that a hijacking takes place in the air or while the plane is moving. Not while it is grounded and no one else is inside but him.
Boof da Clown if a passenger plane was on the ground about to takeoff and some terrorist takes over the controls, it’s still a highjacking lol
@@Yurio
'About to takeoff' generally implies that the passenger plane itself is full of people. Or, at the very least, has an active crew. From what I gather of the whole situation, the plane itself was actually empty. Yes, it would be hijacking by the traditional definition of the word, however, words have other meanings besides the official ones.
When I say hijacking to a random person on the street, they'll most likely assume that it's something that is going on while the plane is in use. The only thing here is the original commenter, and Boof da Clown for that matter is simply stating that there's a difference of perceptions among the public with those two different terms.
As a reporter's job, it should be their mission to report the news and different events as honestly as possible, and that includes using the correct terms as well. The same situation applies to law and court cases and such. Whether or not you realize it, by using a different term, it gives people a different perception of what happened in general. Maybe it was a mistake, and maybe it's to push some sort of agenda, but the word that should be used is stolen, as it properly fits the societal and literal definition of what the situation was.
@@boofdaclown7866 a definition is a definition. it was hijacked. most people associating hijacking with people onboard doesn't mean its right

The plane was grounded he just walked in and sat down for a joyride lol... This is more a suicidal joyride than a "plane hijacking"...
@@MagniGames It's more grand theft Airplane right? This aint hijacking
Yeah I think it actually is. If your intention was to just take the plane and not hurt anyone you'd be charged with felony vehicle theft in most states, which is a few years in prison and nowhere near as bad as hijacking. You honestly might even be able to get off with a misdemeanor joyriding charge if you had audio tapes like this..

I think he woke up for the first time and truly saw what everything is, he probably realized he could never go back to sleep and decided to end it on his own terms
It’s because he was already over it. There was no-way for him to come back to a decent life
Cheeta372, Given his mental state and that he didn’t kill anyone he might have gotten help if he landed the plane and surrender to the police.
While I hope for a understanding judge and all, I doubt it very much as this happened after 9/11 and the air force was brought in.
It's something very common among suicidal persons. Once the decision is made the pressure is gone and some even feel bursts of happiness. I remember that the German goalkeeper 'Robert Enke' played the game of his life the very same day he was gonna end it. People thought he had overcome his depression. (Obligatory: to everyone who ever felt close to that edge, pls seek professional therapy)
Sad. It was like trying to talk someone off the ledge who already jumped. Lord have mercy on his soul.

No...there's a fine difference between stealing and Hijacking. The definition for hijacking word for word according to google at least is "unlawfully seize (an aircraft, ship, or vehicle) in transit and force it to go to a different destination or use it for one's own purposes."
@@nezalain Exactly. And in this case he hijacked the plane, flew it around like he wasn't supposed to and used it for his own purposes: as his own suicide craft.
The use of the term Hijack is not incorrect in this particular situation. I don't know why there's so many comments saying the news shouldn't have dubbed him a hijacker. HE IS A HIJACKER, dummies. He hijacked that plane.
@@batorsagandszerelem4474 "In transit" is the key phrase. The plane was not in transit, therefore it was stolen. If someone dragged you out of your car at a stop sign, that's hijacking. If they steal it off your drive-way it's stealing.

Can we have a round of applause for the Air Traffic Controller and all the Pilots who tried to talk him down and help him land it? ATC guy especially. Like damn, he wasn't a negotiator or anything, just a normal guy trying to help, and he stayed on the line with him the entire time. There's a part that isn't in this video where Rich (the guy flying the plane) even apologises to him, he said something along the lines of "I'm sorry man, I hope this doesn't ruin your day."
It's tragic to listen to, but in a strange way, hearing everyone trying so hard, for so long, to help a complete stranger, warms my heart. That kind of thing restores my faith in humanity. I hope they're doing well now, and I hope Rich is resting peacefully.
LawGuyEnforcementGuy I don’t think they send F-15s for interception, I think that’s mostly the F-16s.
LawGuyEnforcementGuy if they weren’t trying to hurt anybody why would they do that with the crashing airplane, debris, it’s not like it’s gonna disintegrate into thin air.
Probably because the ATC controllers wished it was them haha
Not really they were just trying to stop a crash
If he did what they said, his life would be ruined back on the ground. No job, prison time. He essentially forfeited his life the second he started the plane.

It depends on the job though, the working men will always get paid also, so...
@I love Eating ass You think happy people are stealing planes to kill themselves in?
Yeah and after that society blames it all on masculinity and mens toxic nature
It's not that there's no help being offered. Literally you just need to Google them. You could really write a book about this guy. From the Shawshank Redemption: "I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone." *Long Live Sky King*
There's so much pain involved with these recordings, it makes me wonder what happened up until this point. I wish he could've gotten help.
I think it's a little wrong to call him a "hijacker".. To hijack something you need to "illegally seize a vehicle *that's in transit* and redirect it's movements", and this guy did not do that. I think it's closer to a suicidal joyride, which is actually a good term for it because it seems he did this for a last moment of "joy", and props to him because it sounds like he really was enjoying himself..
No it's not wrong. Fits the other definitions.
I agree. You can steal an empty bus but if you hold it up full of people and demand it drives somewhere you've hijacked it. Shouldnt the same logic apply to aircraft?
They also call him a mechanic.
He wasn't.
what? he did exactly what your definition of hijacking is. he seized the vehicle in transit illegally and did not take it on the appropriate route it was intended for
So you say the definition of "Hijacker" doesn't apply, so you just make up something? That... doesn't help anyone.
He stole an empty plane. Not a hijacking.

I feel sorry for the ones trying to talk him down. Yeah, I feel sorry for the dude flying the plane that he felt he had to go out like that, but as a first responder who has unsuccessfully saved victims and lived with massive survivors guilt/hopelessness for not being able to keep someone alive (not just suicide but for any reason), imagine what the guys who were trying to talk him down and get him out of that alive felt after they knew he passed. My heart goes out to them, truly. They did a fabulous job talking with him, calm and collected and even trying to insert a little humorous banter to try and get him to change his mind. Hats off to them.
nah, he managed to get him not to crash into a skyscraper, good enough
I am not blaming the responder, but I wouldnt think that he did a good job... If you think someones wants to killhimself and problably killing many in the way, you have to use psicology, try to connect with the person.... but the first responder didnt do that, he tried to be "profesional" and that obviusly doesnt help to a guy that has nothing to lose or everything to lose (depends how you see it). I dont know if there was a way to get a better ending, but what we know is that the way the first responder acted didnt work, maybe someone with empathy or with an understanding of how to connect could help more in this kind of situations....
so what you save him he goes to jail whats the point in saving him then

Even the airlines and military use modified versions of commercial software.
