Aprilia RS 125 Top End Rebuild Part 3 - Bleed Fluids & 1st Heat Cycle

  • Welcome to Tom Did It.
    Here in Part 3 i will be cleaning the air filter, bleeding the 2 stroke oil pump, filling and bleeding the coolant radiator, filling the gear box oil and completing the 1st heat cycle after the top end rebuild.
    So in summary;
    Part 1 - I remove and dismantle the engine. Clean the engine and cut new gaskets.
    Part 2 - I assemble the engine, check new squish then install the engine back in the bike.
    Part 3 - I focused on bike assembly, new fluids and oils and first start up after rebuild.
    My aim is to make videos that provide some light entertainment for those who have interest in motorcycles whilst being educational to the average DI mechanic.
    Enjoy
    Tom Did It.

      My 2012 bike has low kms but was not garaged and the power valve was stuck, probably from using cheap oil. The VHST carby has a weird mixture of jets. It seems your 2010 model has the previous version 28mm carb that works well. It's a treat to see your bike. It looks brand new. It's nice to see you doing a proper job.

    Motul 710 2T all the way brother!!! Although I have suffered 2 Heat ceases over 5 years. The first with the factory config and the second with the Polini 32mm carb, factory reeds and K&N cone filter (care of PJME). Recently purchased the V-Force 3 Reed System from the same supplier. Have the top end apart now and trying to find the overheat problem. No obvious indicators so far after all standard observations complete. Any further ideas please Tom?

    I thought the manaul says part synthetic, fully doesnt protect well at low temps so actually increases wear. Where mineral is better at low temps. The clutch will actually perform better to.

      I know PJME seem to be the ‘go to place’ for Aprilia and 2 stroke bikes, however due to Covid-19, parts take 2-3 months to reach me from UK 🇬🇧. I buy parts from eBay, PJME, F1 Moto and anywhere else I can find them👍

      Regarding your message above - I agree. My carb is also PHBH and I use a 120. The 120 works bang-on for my conditions and I can dial it in quite well just by adjusting the needle. Based on the detail of your comments, it seems you also know your bikes. In a previous message you mentioned you have been working on 2 strokes for some years now :)

    hi mate just bought a 2007 rs125 it has 20k km on the clock does it need a rebuild?

    • @tomdidit4216
      @tomdidit4216  2 роки тому

      Hi there.
      Congratulations on your purchase. They are fun bikes!
      Regarding your question - it really depends on how the bike was treated and maintained prior to buying it. Does the bike start and run ok? Assuming there is no pinging or knocking noises? My manual does state that the piston should be checked every 8,000km and replaced every 16,000 (take this as a guide).
      The first thing I do an any of my bikes is a compression test as this will indicate if a new piston and rings are needed. I have made a compression test video that shows the process if you’re unsure how to do it. If the compression is low, around 80-90 then you need a new piston and rings. This is also a good time to check the big end bearing and con rod etc etc.
      Hope this helps.

    The internet at 1:10 doesn’t know what it’s talking about again - paper/foam are the same if you throw them away and replace them.
    Paper is better as when you wash it, it lets you know you’re being a tool and makes you buy a new one.
    Which you should with the foam ones too.
    Obviously still the internet providing an opinion, but it’s here regardless 😂

    You absolutely MUST use 800ML of gear oil in these bikes. Otherwise, the ceramic gears will not get enough lubrication and eventually, will break. I learned this the hard way.

    • @tomdidit4216
      @tomdidit4216  2 роки тому

      Hi there Juho.
      Sorry to learn you crunched your gearbox.
      My manual states 600ML of oil. Does your bike have a Rotax 123 or 122 engine? They may have different oil capacities that I’m not aware of.
      Cheers
      Tom

    • @juho6898
      @juho6898 2 роки тому +1

      @@tomdidit4216 I have the same engine, Rotax 122 but the 123 has the same oil capacity. And indeed, manual does tell you to put 600Ml of gear oil. I live in a place where people race these bikes a lot, so they know a thing or two about these engines. Ive been told that ceramic gears need more lubrication than metal ones, so under heavy use and 600ml of oil, the ceramic ones will eventually wear out and shatter like mine did. Thankfully when shit happens, the broken ceramic pieces wont harm the engine more. Thats the fatal flaw of this engine, but very easy to prevent. Ride safe!
