Led Zeppelin's lead singer, Robert Plant, was brought to tears because of the drummer, Jason Bonham. Jason is the son of John Bonham, the band's original drummer and Robert's best friend, whose death in 1980 resulted in the end of the band. They had invited Jason to represent his Dad at this ceremony honoring Led Zeppelin. But Jason told them he had a scheduling conflict. The conflict turned out to be walking out on stage to surprise the band by playing the drums during the tribute. Look at how surprised and happy Robert is when they introduced Jason at the beginning. The tears came as Robert thought about his friend and was sad he could not be there. It's also very poignant to watch Jason look up toward heaven, thinking undoubtedly about his Dad, as Anne sings the word heaven in last line of the song.

Jason is wearing his dads bowler hat and so are the core singers as a tribute to John Bonham. Plant is probably thinking "If only John was alive to see this". The press hated them when they first came out in 1969. Robert Plant was only 19 years old on the first two albums. Think about that! Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Dazed and Confused, How Many More Times, and Whole Lotta Love were all recorded with a 19 year old singing! The first album was recorded in less than two weeks. Page did the solo for Dazed and Confused in one take!

That's right. Robert Plant and John Bonham came to the band together and were best pals before they joined Led Zeppelin. And when Robert Plant's son died when he was only 5 years old - John Bonham was the only one in the band that attended the funeral. Clearly so many reasons for Robert to get emotional. It's always tough when you miss someone.

Time to go down the Heart rabbit hole. Ann and Nancy Wilson from Seattle formed this band in 1975 starting with their release album "Dreamboat Annie' with their 2 early hits "Magic Man" and "Crazy On You" then followed in 1977 by the album "Little Queen" with their mega rocker you got to review "Barracuda". This band is classic. I saw them in concert back in 1991 and back then when they came back on stage for an encore the final song that they did was Led Zepplin's "Rock n' Roll" which was a great way to end the show. The Kennedy Center Honors is a Presidential show that honors performers who have contributed at a high level to American culture. David Letterman was also honored at that same show.

Ann Wilson has one of the most powerful female voices. And her sister Nancy can play a mean guitar. This is one of the best tributes to Led Zeppelin with Ann & Nancy doing the classic song "Stairway To Heaven". No one else could have pulled it off as well. "Heart" have had so many great hits such as "Barracuda", "Magic Man", "Crazy On You", "What About Love", "Never", "Dog & Butterfly", "These Dreams", "Alone" etc.

Catch the story on UA-cam that Ann and Nancy Wilson tell about seeing Led Zeppelin for the first time at the age of seventeen. The bowler hat that Jason Bonham was wearing, as was everyone in the chorus, was a tribute to Jason's father John, the Beast of the Drumkit, who also liked to throw back a pint or two and wear that enigmatic style of hat. If you look closely at the views of the three living members of Zeppelin you can just make out another award winner that evening, who was David Letterman. Dave had Zeppelin on his show the next day or two after which was entertaining and is available on YT...

I've been a fan of both Heart and Led Zeppelin for 47 and 53 years respectively.
I do regret never seeing Zeppelin live back in the day, I did see Heart back on the day Elvis died, August 16th 1977, and they did Zeppelin's "Rock n Roll" as the last song of the encore and they dedicated it to the King.
That little exchange between Robert and Jason was due to the fact he asked Jason to come and represent his father, John, Jason told him he had another commitment and couldn't make it.

Love the choir even in this hall-of-fame version! Heart was inspired by LZ, they "get it", and have frequently done LZ covers since the '70s, even recording some I think. Lots of their music also does interesting acoustic/hard alternating like LZ. Their Rain Song cover is rare and touching. Jason's Zep tribute band was 1000% better during the time Heart was with them in no small part because Ann's got the right spirit and voice. Ann and Nancy fought very hard to made it in the men's world of Rock&Roll in the '70s and '80s, opening a door which benefits women even today, and are still rocking 50+ years later.

Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart are big Led Zeppelin fans and they always do some Zeppelin songs in their live shows. They began touring in the early 70's. They don't always play this song but they do sing it often. It's quite possible that Heart has performed this song live more often than Zeppelin did.

Roger Fisher was a founding member and original lead guitarist for Heart; he was HEAVILY influenced by Jimmy Page and I think that's where the influence and appreciation really began. As mentioned in another post here, the girls were originally quite turned off when they first saw Zeppelin at the age of seventeen... Things obviously changed, lol.

Definitely check out more Heart. "Barracuda," "Magic Man," "Crazy On You," and my personal favorite "Mistral Wind" are all fantastic, and just the tip of the iceberg. Their music from the 70s is better than their 80s music, but it's all really great.
Also you can check out Led Zeppelin's perfomance of "Kashmir" from Celebration Day, a more contemporary concert with John Bonham's son Jason on drums.

Every year the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts holds an "Honors Gala", where they honor usually five artists (musicians, dancers, actors, etc...). This was from 2012 when the honorees were Buddy Guy, Dustin Hoffman, David Letterman, Natalia Makarova, and Led Zeppelin. For each honoree there are several people who speak or perform in honor of them. Usually a lot of past honorees attend, as well as the sitting president (except Trump). The presidents often host a dinner around the same time at the White House for the honorees, which at times has included performances by some of the honorees.

Led Zeppelin were honored by President Obama for their contribution to the arts. This is a common honor given to outstanding musicians, actors etc. As part of the honor, several famous bands influenced by Led Zeppelin performed Led Zeppelin songs as a tribute. Among them Lenny Kravitz, The Foo Fighters and of course Heart.
Here's an interesting fact that you might have missed at the beginning when Heart was introduced. John Bonham the Led Zeppelin drummer passed away in 1980. To include John Bonham in this honor, Led Zeppelin invited his son Jason, also a drummer to receive an honor. Jason told them that he couldn't make it due to having another gig. So when introduced in the beginning with Heart, the members of Led Zeppelin were pleasantly surprised when Jason came out, and they exchanged a very heart felt greetings.

When Ann and Nancy Wilson were creating the DNA for their group Heart, they pulled musical influence from the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. You can hear it in Ann's voice and in Nancy's skilled guitar playing. This was a chance to pay homage to surviving members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham's son, Jason, on the drums. They killed it.
Robert Plant is notoriously known for his dislike of people trying to play this song. But as you can see by his reaction, he is very pleased here.
My favorite songs by Heart are ALONE,
EVEN IT UP, which doesn't get much notice, and STRAIGHT ON.
Your channel is rising fast. Keep doing what you are doing. And enjoy.

Thanks for your reaction, to answer quickly--the Kenndy Center honors every year or so an artist who contributed to USA culture, this one was to honor Led Zeppelin (the old guys that are up in the crowd), and as it's organized by USA government, it is tradition that the current president is present at the ceremony (that's why you see Obama), and the drummer is the son of John Bonham (Led Zep's original drummer who died in 1980). I hope that can answer your questions. Have a nice day Maddy, already subscribed and I'll watch what else you did. the 2 girls playing are from the band Heart, and I recommend them to you as well, they're very talented--watch crazy on you, barracuda or Alone from them, or their induction ceremony at rock'n'roll hall of fame from 2013 or so.

Kennedy Center is in Washington DC where all the elite political class live. Yes that was the 3 surviving members in attendance. Drummer John Bonham passed away in 1980, that was his son on the drums. Kravitz and other artists did tributes to Led Zep as well. This performance was the highlight finale! Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart were true bad ass rockers in the day and you should check a couple of their songs from the 70s. Great Reaction, thanks!

Kennedy center honors is an annual gathering to honor artists of all genres, stage, screen, television, music. It is a huge event in Washington which is why you saw the Obamas. Heart were huge fans of les zeppelin even before they began as a band so this was an amazing honor for them as well. Besides Robert’s emotions, the shear joy on Jimmy Page’s face throughout the song was incredible as well

Hi Maddy, the Kennedy Center is located in Washington, DC and is named after President John F Kennedy. Each year they honor people who have made significant contributions to society.
Yes, those are the living members of Zeppelin. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. The drummer, John Bonham has passed away. His son Jason is playing drums here.
Ann Wilson just crushed this. One of the greatest female singers in rick history.

This was a very popular song that was constantly covered. It got to the point where Led Zeppelin rarely wanted to hear it again. They agreed to this version for two reasons. First, the band's original drummer had died but the one playing here was his son. Second, Heart (singer Ann, and guitar player Nancy) were active at the same time originally. Heart would eventually make a major change and find a second peak a decade later. They are well known. You can see it in Led Zeppelin's band member faces as they are won over gradually.

Heart - Stairway to Heaven Led Zeppelin Tribute This is a great live version. The bowler hats & outfits are a tribute to Drummer John Bonham RIP It is his son on the drums. This is my 2nd favorite Kennedy center performance. #1 is when they honored singer/song writer Carol King. She was stopped on the street and asked to write a natural woman song for Aretha Franklin copy & Paste to UA-cam---->Aretha Franklin - (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman (Live at Kennedy Center Honors) Carol's reaction is priceless.

There are other performances on that show that are really cool. That was the last performance of the night. The whole show was a tribute to Led Zeppelin. I believe your boy Lenny Kravitz performed one of their songs as well.

This is exactly what is wrong with many UA-cam reactions. You have reactors who aren't familiar with these classic artists who are taking advice from random (often uniformed) voices in the comment section, asking the reactors to listen to cover versions and live performances of songs without ever hearing the original studio recordings, lol. It's absolutely crazy. Some reactors instinctually know to do it right, while others simply take the advice of the comment section. I just clicked on this video to leave this comment. I didn't watch the video, and won't watch anybody react to this tribute unless I know the reactor has at least heard the original studio recording of Stairway to Heaven, which is one of the greatest achievements in audio recording history. Maddy, I just want to say I love your reactions, and even though you did it all backwards now, I still highly recommend listening to the original studio recording. It will open your eyes.
    Peace

@@MaddyReactionsThank you so much for the quick reply! I truly do love your reactions. Maddy, a little over a month ago when you did the Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melody", I recommend in the comment section that you listen to the studio recordings of two Led Zeppelin songs. The first was Stairway to Heaven, and the 2nd was "Since I've Been Loving You". At that time, you said "Awesome!" . This was our interaction:

I just discovered your channel. If you wanna build up subs quick, you should react to Led Zeppelin. I would start with two songs. The first is the song "Stairway to Heaven" off of the album Led Zeppelin IV, then I would do the song "Since I've Been Loving You" off of the album Led Zeppelin III. I would hold off on watching any live led Zeppelin videos for now, as their live performances were very improvisational and wont give you a true appreciation for the magic within their songs. I would stick with the original studio recordings for now. I subscribed!
      Peace

      Awesome!
So I was really looking forward to your reactions of these two Led Zeppelin Studio recordings, but instead, you did a live version of Stairway to Heaven (which pales in comparison to their studio recording), and then a tribute version of the song without ever hearing the original.
Here is the original studio recording of Stairway to Heaven:
