Watched this one on a bean bag in the living room with mom one day, maybe 1974. We talked about it in 2009 before she passed, and I rented it on Netflix for us to watch. Thanks to this channel I grabbed it last night off of Amazon. Still funny, a great watch, 50ish years on. Great memories, thanks so much.

Always get a kick out of this movie. I think it's one of Streisand's best. And yes, Madeline Kahn is out of this world.

One of my favorite comedies. If I can fall in love with the screwball comedies of the 1930s--long before my time, young people today can enjoy the humor in What's Up Doc?.

the last great screwball comedy. for real. this really one of those-"they don't make 'em like they used to"-movies! and yes! Barbra has never been sexier! or better! this is my favorite performance of hers on film. for real. she is marvelous. and gorgeous. and so fun, so smart, so funny, so dear, so outrageous. she really is perfection. as is sexy Ryan O'Neal. and INTRODUCING (!) Madeline Kahn?! OMG! I mean-come on! to see this film in a big crowded theatre-the entire crowd all laughing and carrying on-it was an event! it was thrilling! so great!! also the romance! Howard and Judy have to get together! they have to! magnificent. I love your review here. right on! and I didn't know this was the 2nd highest grossing movie of that year! amazing!! ps. Barbra should have done more of these types of roles. this is where her acting gifts really are the strongest, I feel. she is just a delight in every way in this film. thanks for posting. I've liked and subscribed.

ps. do you do reactions too? or just reviews? just curious. I tend to watch reactions more than I watch reviews. I might be the minority on this. and I am glad I happened to see this, and watched even though it was a review. thanks again for posting.

I tend to do reviews because I have seen so many of the movies. I have thought about reactions but I just don’t know how I would. Maybe if I did B movies.

Yes I think Barbra should have done more of these types of movies too! People that do not go to see movies in the theater are really missing out on the shared experience. I hold out hope that movie theaters survive.

Saw it the first time on TV when I was a kid (early 90s).
Loved loved the loony jokes. So as an adult, I bought the Special Edition DVD. And guess what? It still holds up after 50 years. Silly, stupid, clever..

    Not known for comedy?
Barbra was already known for comedy when she made this movie. She was already known as an all-around talent and after numerous TV guest spots doing humorous bits and after doing comedy musicals on Broadway and and after several romantic comedy movies, her ability to be funny was not doubted.
After her first TV special in 1965 "...The United Press International proclaimed 'She is so great it is shocking. She may well be the most supremely talented and complete popular entertainer that this country has ever produced.'"
When WUD opened, NO ONE was saying, "Streisand in a comedy??? It can't be!"

This was a regular feature on the ABC Friday Night Movie during the ‘70s. It’s still really funny, IMO.

Streisand was inarguably the biggest female movie star of her era.

Actually Whats up Doc was a screwball comedy, a 70s screwball film indebted to earlier 30s comedies.
Bogdanovich knew Howard Hawks who he had interviewed when he was writing about film prior to becoming a director.
No surprise that he essentially did this riff on Bringing Up Baby, Hawk's comedy.

I liked Barba's comedies. This was good, but I think For Pete's Sake was even better.

Peter Bogdanovich came up with the story? (2:05) This film hearkens back to older screwball comedies? (5:38)
    Well--sort of.
_What's Up Doc?_ was very directly inspired by Howard Hawks' 1938 film _Bringing Up Baby._ Watching the beginning of _What's Up Doc?_ seems very much like a remake of the earlier film, but it soon veers off into an entirely different story. Bogdanovich described his film as "an homage" to _Bringing Up Baby._
Hawks' film is also a great film, and I would encourage everyone to watch it--maybe even make a double feature of it with _What's Up Doc?._
