I'm a Marine veteran. If I'm not mistaken, I recall learning in basic that to eligible for the Silent Drill Platoon, you had to be male, 0311 (Infantry), hold a 300 PFT (perfect score in the physical fitness test), be within a certain weight range AND be within like a 2" range of height around 6' to 6'2".
I was lucky enough to see them perform a couple of times in person. Every time I watch a performance I think I do notice that they are all nearly the exact same height. It seems crazy, but such intense standards are what make this so incredible in my opinion. We all learn basic drill, and it's difficult but comes with great lessons. This is a whole other level.
For a little context, those are real, fully sharpened bayonets, ready for war, they are just made fancy with plating and polished, but they are fully ‘sharp’ weapons of war, just the dressed up fancy version of what we used in WWII, same with the rifles, the M1 Garands, are fully functional rifles, if you had ammo, they’d work just like they did from 1936 onwards.
And there is no one giving them cues. It’s all on them. That’s training. Discipline and pure repetition beyond normal levels of training, is how they do it, now sure some may count. Or sing a song in their head to help them, but it’s up to them. And working as a group, experience. Plus it helps, that’s all that those Marines do, they don’t do other jobs, not while they are there anyways. That’s literally all they do and practice, train heavily for.
former USMC here. Just in bootcamp we spent over 250 hours practicing drill. MCRD. The Grinder.
My feet can still remember that black top.
Me too, Pendleton . Yes, we had so much drill! One of the enjoyable parts of boot camp.
I went through Parris Island in 88. The Marine Corps puts a lot of emphasis on drill....no question! And the end of basic training you're all moving as one well oiled machine.
SEMPER-FI-Marine. I had the-HONOR of serving with the marines on my first deployment to go fight in Iraq ( I volunteered for 4 deployments to Iraq )with the Texas Guard in 2005 at Camp TQ ( it was a marine FOB then )our battalion fell under the command of the marines there. And there was also a PRC unit at TQ-a marine reserve unit.We did joint missions with them both.I was in an infantry unit,we did route clearance,QRF,ECPs,combat patrols,raids,vehicle-check-points,etc,etc,..We lost 12 of our battle-buddies and the marines lost 8 of their marines, the guys in my unit and the marines there were like our-BROTHERS.Unfortunately the marines like running in formations during the day in 140 degree heat, one female marine passed out in a run and had to see our medics-ASAP.All her clothes were stripped off as they gave her several IV bags. When the TEMP dropped to 90 degrees,my body started to shiver. LOL.I also did 2 straight tours to Iraq back-to-back. SEMPER-FI
@@powerbadpowerbad SEMPER-FI I was in Kuwait this was 95 lost a great friend from hometown school. We always stick together and always have each others backs, period.
@@TheRealApartmentChef Sorry for the loss of your great, friend. We all weep for our dear friends, when I'm alone at home,I still cry for my lost friends:marines and army. And,you're right,we always stick together and have each others back. I definitely agree with y'all! The players should have stayed off field!!! So disrespectful 😢
They have a game to play. This was just a half time exhibition. It's different when they're performing at 8th & I or at an exclusive event. They knew the players would be warming up at some point. No disrespect there
it's not the players fault, whoever planned that during halftime is to blame. It should be before the game if halftime isn't enough time.
@@RobMrowiec lol who cares? the players didnt go to the military and interrupt them during official business, the military came to the game to indoctrinate and spread propaganda. Its on them if they take a football to the head while doing it.
@@gmac9987 You sound like one of those "woke" pansies smdh.
1. It's a football game. Get over it.
2. Americans are not obligated to show respect for the state's armed forces. Perhaps you prefer how things are done in N. Korea?
Glad you pointed it out about the football players showing respect to the Marines. You're absolutely right.
I've had the pleasure of marching (a lot) with the M1 Garand. Also a lot with a sword. The sword is easier to carry, but if you're carrying the sword it means you're in charge of something and/or somebodies. Had a roommate on the Honor Guard - they practiced A LOT and did competitions. Like others have said, you're missing the sounds of their shoes and the butts of the guns hitting a hard surface. You know how shoes wear depending how you walk? Toe caps and heel pads address that issue, and they're hard rubber. Honor Guards use metal versions, so their steps are sort of a walking tap dance, if that makes sense, and it's lost on the grass.
I always enjoy seeing the Silent Drill team, they never disappoint.

Oh yeah, that ominous, slow, half step march, is only used two times. The Silent Drill Platoon, and funerals, that’s why we call it the funeral march. We’ve had way more funerals than they have performed and we used that march for long before they existed, just gives a little more context, it looks good. But is somber. Especially after you know why, almost sinister in its outright use like that. As only used by then in major/formal things, and in funerals of Marines.also gotta love the snap and pop of them rifles being handled. Music to my ears. We all learn that, to a far lesser degree than they do obviously, we learn it as the normal. Science part as Marines. They learn it, as an art in The Silent Drill Platoon.
During my bootcamp graduation we were warned not to move an inch because all movements will be noticed with the white gloves. I had a spider walk across my ear 2 minutes in to the graduation. I started sweating but didn't move. The Marines behind me came up afterward and said they even wanted to swat the spider.
White gloves with Class A's? Are you sure?
You don't even have a Dress Uniform in basic...I didn't have one until after AIT because it wasnt needed...
And you barely get a single Class A in time to graduate in...
But you had white gloves? Did you, though?
@@tobaobokoomi1693 Dress Blue in 1992 look it up youngun’ :) That is what we graduated in.
@@telemperor I stand corrected...disregard earlier smart-assery...I graduated 94...
@@tobaobokoomi1693 yep the uniform for graduation had changed around that time I believe
In the Marines. Its not called a hat. Its called your Cover. You wear your Cover out doors. But you take it off indoors. 👮
That's the whole military
@@gmac9987 That's true. I come from a military background so to speak. My dad was a Sargent in Korea, Army. My sister RIP was Air Force. My older brother in the Marines, my other brother Navy. And as for me. I had too many disabilities to serve. A bit of a disappointment to my family. But that's life.
"A "cover" refers to any kind of headgear worn as part of the uniform. The cover used here is a "cap", as it has only a visor in front. A "hat" has a brim that goes all the way around. Marine Corps Drill Instructors wear the hat.
@@baraxor Its always good to learn new things! I've always only heard it in my family as a cover.
@@baraxorActually, all of them are called covers. There’s the garrison cover, barracks cover, campaign cover, and the 8 point, the only hat is the safari hat that coaches wear on the range.
They train initially out loud calling out each move that they do with a metronome going on to get a steady beat in their heads. Every beat of the metronome is a move. After hours and hours of training, just like a musician who doesn't need to tap their foot anymore to keep time, the same happens for them. They have a training school they go to for selection into the platoon, then they train continuously. This is on top of whatever training they got in boot camp...

Yeah, that had me steamed. That and the people who were in the way as they entered.
Reminds me of the American Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Guards/Sentinels. Amazing precision!
Similar but these are "US Marines" and the sentinels at the tomb of the unknown soldier are "US Army" soldiers form the 3rd Infantry Regiment.
Reminds me of the opening of A Few Good Men.
@@vanhattfield8292 Good to know! Thanks!
Got to see them perform twice at their barracks at 8th and I when I worked in DC. They did shows open to the public on Friday nights - very impressive to see in person.
It was so disrespectful of the teams to warm up while the Marines we reforming. They were almost finished God sake. Show some respect.
Halftime is Timed. This is a Football Game. The Players have 3 minutes to Warm up before the start.
@@cedricmcconnell6074 Authoritarians prefer the North Korean model where citizens are forced to honor and respect the state's armed forces.
FYI, the "hat" we actually call a "cover." These particular ones are called the "Barracks Cover."
I'm almost certain they're told "if your pants catch on fire, you keep marching, Marine!"
I saw them when I was stationed at the Washington Navy Yard, they performed every Friday after work.
The one thing that many overlook is the angle of each rifle throughout the evolution - the rifles are always aligned, both in angle and height. This is a look that is very difficult to maintain and requires hours (and hours) of practice as a unit.
In my opinion the U.S. Air Force has the most dangerous and exciting silent drill routine
Silent but deadly
I've had the pleasure of seeing the Silent Drill platoon 2 times.
The first time was while I was attending the Staff Noncommissioned Officer course in Quantico, VA, at Marine Barracks in Washington DC in 1985 and the second time was at a local armed forces day celebration near my home in 1992. Everything is done by a silent count and practiced over abd over and over.
Every Marine learns a small part of the rifle manual in boot camp as a part of their drill & ceremonies instruction. These Marines take it to 11.
You should check out the Evening Parade at Marine Barracks in Washington DC. The Marine Corps Band, the Presidents own and the Silent Drill platoon perform.
the announcer at the stadium has trouble reading oy vey lol
There's a video of the Silent Drill Platoon performing at Gallantin High School that is much better. You can hear more of what keeps them in formation, the rifle hitting the ground, the slaps of their thighs and hitting the rifle. Here's the link to the video : ua-cam.com/video/WUYbbTHf4dw/v-deo.html.
The M-1 was the primary US rifle of WW2.
I was lucky enough to grow up in the Navy and see this platoon in person. This is a good performance, as all of those are, but it loses something by not being on a hard surface. It's different hearing the heel strikes and the sound of the rifles hitting the floor. These guys are beyond amazing. They don't call them "The Few, The Proud" for nothing. The other branches also have drill teams like these but got a special place in my heart for the Marines. Oh and the inspection part has always been my favorite. Such precision and ability.
You said it would be embarrassing if he lost his bayonet, but he won't. He may lose his hat or even his shoe, but he will never drop his bayonet. He is a United States Marine.
That platoon is incredibly dangerous because they are incredibly disciplined. They are the type to get the job done without communication.
Yes, if you are talking about a half-time show performance. Absolutely useless and almost suicidal feature in real war, real war is mostly about adaptability and not wetting yourself when things get real
@@Songfugel I mean, if the enemy captures you, at least they will have a clown for the breaks.
Idk why these clowns are hating, I'm a military vet (Air Force) and I know how much discipline goes into just performing that in an NFL stadium.
"Is that a knife?" No, you can't have one. You're in England.
Definitely disrespectful that the players didn't wait for the Drill Team to be completely off the field. Semper Fi!
The players are being paid millions of dollars to entertain the fans. They have to warm up to get ready to play. Whoever organized it should have done a better job with the timing and length of the exhibition. Semper Fi and HOOAH
Nah Bro....they had to Warm up. This is Football game
Super disrespectful the military showed up on the players field to spread propaganda. Drill team shouldve waited until the game was over and the players were completely done.
@@nullakjg767Absolute nonsense. Jesus.
@@nullakjg767spread propaganda? Damn, your thinking is warped.
I know how Brits (and most of the world) view the US and the US military. But we're as proud of this as many British citizens are of the (now) King's Guard. God Save The Queen! Long Live The King!
if you get to see these guys preform inside when they bang the rifles on the ground its incredible percussion
"Is that a knife?" Cripes!
The cover ( hat) that fell off is kind of intentional. It happens every performance to demonstrate discipline and add a bit of humor to the performance.
I agree. It is a sign of disrespect for them to start practicing while the Marines are still on the field. And if you did not notice, when the inspector checked the first rifle, the Marine actually took the bayonet off and put it in the sheath on the side before passing the weapon over.
They are there during the player's game, not the other way around.
An obvious fact that OBD missed.
I know from being in the U.S.Navy how much training it takes to reach this projection. At the end can see the football players on the field behind them. That was so disrespectful. They are counting in their head. The U.S.Marines and part of the Navy. I am proud of my brothers.
This public appearance is the only equivalent the US military has to the British military marching through the streets of cities. It is the way our military connects with the civilian public. Take a look at the Evening Parade at the Marine Barracks, Washington, DC, or the Sunset Parade, also in Washington, DC.
Half time at NFL games is timed. The players have 12 minutes in the dressing room and 3 minutes on the field before the second half starts. This is why players aren’t paying attention they just want to warm up. To them this is just the halftime entertainment.
That marine will hear about his cap coming off for a ling time
Great reaction. I would love to see you guys react to the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the History of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Thanks!
If my poor memory serves me right, the Sunset Parade is actually a parade done at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial (which is that famous Iwo Jima Flag-Raising Statue across the river from the Lincoln Memorial) - & it's rather the Evening Parade that's performed at Marine Barracks, 8th&I (named for the intersection where the barracks is located - the U.S. Marine Corps Commandant's Home is at this barracks & it was spared by the Brittish when the Brits burned down Washington, D.C. during the War of 1812; Thomas Jeferson himself was the one who had picked this location for the barracks to be built in 1801, so the home was fairly new then).
The Evening Parade was inspired by the Brittish Tattoo. The U.S. Marines were called Devil Dogs by a German officer in WWI & decades later the British gave the U.S. Marines a Bulldog which was then made the U.S. Marine Corps' mascot. The tradition has been to name this mascot, Chesty - after "Chesty" Puller (a very famous & tough Marine).
The Sunset Parade's more open area allows for much more movement of the Silent Drill Team (or Silent Drill Platoon if you prefer) & the U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps (at 8th&I the area is much more confined & there's seating for an audience of approximately 5,000 people).
Both of these parades are done during summer: the Evening Parade at 8th&I SE WashDC is done after dark on Fridays while the Sunset Parades are done while still light out - & on another day of the week (I forget which day, but one should be able to check on the internet &/or call the Public Relations Officer at the barracks). Both parades are done by Marines stationed at 8th&I. The Silent Drill Team also travels & puts on shows for the public both inside & outside of WashDC (like at the football game half-time show in this video).
BTW: The Fort Henry Guard occassionally visits at 8th&I & adds to the parade. Sometimes a U.S. President will come by & review a parade. You might want to put watching a parade or two on your to-do list when visiting the area.
In High School JROTC (Junior Reserved Officer Training Corps), I was on our school's Silent Drill team. To your comment about what they're thinking the entire time. It's almost always counting- every second.
USAFE was like Vietnam except no war. Air Police at my UK base were stoned like many others. Mechanics on the F4 would load up the planes with Afghani Gold or Turkish Delight whe TDY to Turkey. Many of the guys there came from Vietnam to finish out their 4 year hitch.
It's not a hat. It's a cover. Marine parlance. I served in the Corps many many years ago. Great days.
You have to remember that this is a football game not a drill platoon event. The organizers on both sides should have done a better job coordinating the timing and length of the exhibition. Those players are getting payed millions to entertain the people who paid hundreds of dollars to see them play. They have to warm up. I'm former navy marines and army so I'm all about it but you have to be practical and think about the situation and plan accordingly
It's still about respect! Of course, the drill is times perfectly! Those players could see the drill team, representing the Marines all over the world, finishing up! A few minutes delay WOULD NOT HAVE HURT ANYONE'S FEELINGS or bottom dollar! Just a complete bonehead move & disrespect for a U.S. military presentation is ALL IT WAS by a bunch of OVER-PAID dumb jocks!
Bullshit. Millionaires should show a little respect. Warm up in the endzone.
I was in Nrotc and was on the drill team. It was fun.
I tried out for the silent drill team but I had an uncle with a felony and got denied lol you have to be 6'0 or higher and in great shape. Not to mention back ground checks.
Amazing video!
And a another Marine here, us regular guys, not part of them….you don’t do anything that you’re not told too during drill, whether in training or ceremonies, including trying to fox or adjust your uniform, the senior NCO doing the leading/inspections will fix that, if it becomes a problem. You do exactly as your told. When your told, all the regular Marines not the fancy Silent Drill Platoon uses cadences and commands. But even with us, like in recruit training graduation, and practice drill for it, if a Marine faints, because he locked his knees and stopped blood flow. You don’t move, you don’t try to catch him, or help him, he’ll be fine a few moments. You just let them fall, haha. When you’re doing drill, that’s all you do, nothing else. And you always step off with the left foot. The drill foot. The kill foot.
Semper Fi
7:40 yes, during drill you need to keep bearing no matter what happens. If your cover falls off you keep going like its still there. Hahaha i hated drill when i was in the corps tho... thankfully i was infantry so was very very rare. 7:54 Also very correct... we call them "ditties" boot camp and drill is all about ditties.
I agree
Most, if not all bands in America, perform well at halftimes. But true respect should be shown towards the bands that started this great tradition in America-- the historically black college (HBCU) bands. You guys should consider watching an HBCU band perform at halftime. It is wonderful!
As I've said in the comments to Daz/Darrin (or is it E not an I), Love all that you guys do.... way cool.... *Much love from Idaho USA* ! P.S. like Daz, I married up to, Gaynor your lovely...... see ya next time.....
The real reason why the players and everything is going on in the background is bc it’s a live broadcast-production and every second is scheduled to maximize advertising- it’s literally like a live Hollywood set combined w America’s biggest sporting event of the year. The players are being paid BILLIONS combined and a win for their team is like winning lottery money- twice. FYI- It costs more money to run an advert during super-bowl than any other- television broadcast in the world, year after year. The players are trained like the soldiers, completely in the zone and American’s give them a pass bc we understand all of this, it’s like an unspoken cultural thing. Sports guys are our heroes too lol.
Agreed! The players should show respect. But they believe they’re above almost everyone and everyone should bow to them. Horselumps on the highway! Players are just well payed children!
I watch all Colts' games I have never seen this.
The videos showing them messing up is something to watch
Just watched this for the first time earlier on the Beesley's channel and in both videos it was the boys who noticed that hat being askew and called out the disrespect of the players being on the field. I just found that interesting is all.
Can anyone tell me, are military drill platoons the only ones to use real guns? I did color guard in high school but we only had flags, some other schools we saw in competitions used fake guns, they were just a solid block of wood shaped like a gun. I'm just wondering if there are any college marching bands that use real guns or if it's only military that allows use of real guns for these performances.
Former US Navy and rifle drill platoon member. The US Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon is the best at what they do of all our services. And just to add to your comment about the players throwing footballs before the platoon was off of the field, it was very disrespectful. The football players should have waited and showed respect. Disgraceful.
Most Americans have been raised without the concept of Real freedom or the love of our country. They are ignorant to the fact that Military personnel get paid garbage to protect us so worthless Athletes can make millions. We as a country have lost our way. Glad to see people like you saw what people like me see. Well said!
What is an Office Bloke? Does it fly of crawl? Swim or walk upright? Is it Humanoid or alien? Does it come in a variety of colors? Is it sweet or sour?
They pick them at random. They never know where they stop.
these men would die for our country and give the ultimate respect for our country .. aaaa hell with it lets go out there and warm up WTF
Thinking the same thing, that was so very disrespectful.
They keep time by clacking their boots, slapping their thighs, hitting the rifle butt on the ground etc., it’s a lot easier to hear in a quieter environment
They keep the cadence in their heads. Just like marching everything is done on a cadence even though it's not verbal.
Retired Air Force and I agree completely disrespectful, Marines deserve more. Those guys go through hell and ask for more. Semper Fi!
Our country has been more and more disrespectful of our military. I would have loved to see our Marines just break formation and kick their asses right there on their own football field.
Can we at least cut the arts and crafts part of the military budget?
I’ve been binge watching your videos and was wondering if you all had a P.O. Box so I we could send you proper American snacks?
You missed half the experience of USMC drill team because they're on grass and you are not near them. They are disciplined human machines. They walk silently. Their rifles can be heard clunking on the concrete. You can hear the 10+ pounds of rifle when the Marine blindly catches it in their gloved hand. You can see the sharpened bayonet go mere inches past their faces and they do not look...they know their drill team has thrown it perfectly. They are fascinating to see. ua-cam.com/video/NPjv_jA-Jgo/v-deo.html

That was awesome!! I find it very disrespectful ppl are coming on the field for the next half.

I'm sure that Marine who's hat fell off got SMOKED once they were off the field.
Sometimes you cannot plan for that. I think he would have gotten smoked if he tried to straighten it and break ranks. So better for him to just let it fall where it may.
@@Slvrdrgn77d Sorry, thats a big nope ,it don't work that way. That is he just did not have his shit squared away, so they all got smoked.
@@thomasohanlon1060 He had it Cover squared away when the were Marching onto the field, so you believe the whole platoon will get smoked cause his cover got knock when they were doing the drill movements? No, since everybody stayed in formation. He will get a period of instruction for the movement, but nobody got smoked over this.
He didn't get smoked. It's not going to be perfect every time and they actually train and practine for that.
There are small mistakes every few drill shows. There are times where the rifle cracks in half, or someone gets their cover knocked off. The point of drill is to follow orders to the letter and not move otherwise. If you make a mistake, don’t try to hide it, own it and freeze. That shows discipline.
Yes, the players should show respect, but they're just doing what they were told to do. This on the coaches, the owners, and the league. None of them have ever shown any respect except for the almighty dollar.
I’m 100% with your son! It was disrespectful for the players to walk out and start practicing 5’ from the Marines that were still in their role. That’s disappointing to me and that was the Texans team as well. Wow, not a fan of the way they handled that, I was waiting for some sort of respect from the teams, waiting on the side for them to walk off or something but nope, they walked right out on the field!???? Bunch of spoiled millionaires that don’t appreciate those soldiers that fight in their stead.
Really enjoyed the video up to that point tho.
I agree both teams were being very disrespectful.
I agree. No respect from the players!
i would suggest the gun race...royal marines enacting a real action in the Boar war in south Africa..worth a look

Those players have no respect. Think about it, these are the guys that kneel during the national anthem. The only thing they love about this country is the money they make, and most of them don't even respect the fans that make it possible to make that money.
