Texas band director here. Glad you enjoyed the show. The band works really hard to provide halftime shows. These are musician athletes. A lot of work on the instrument and a ton of time learning drill in various weather conditions really gets them in shape. Marching band is not for the lazy. Band students are awesome people. Their level of commitment is extremely high and their payout is having a great performance. That appreciation from the audience or the ratings from a band contest is second to none. Ohio State is a great university band program. There is a ton of tradition and pride there. When you come to the U.S. you need to go to a college football game (if it is in the Fall when you visit). The whole experience is awesome.

I am now 63 years old, but when I was in high school I was fortunate enough to be the trumpet soloist from 1974 - 1977. I attended a small high school in North Carolina, USA. Our band consisted of about 100 musicians plus about 30 drill team members. In this video, the statement was made about this being a whole other sport. From what I experienced, there was not one single member of the band that could play football, but I dare to say that there was not one single football player that could do what we did. During marching season, we practiced after school, Monday through Thursday for 3:30 to 7:00. We then performed a pregame and half-time show at a Football game every Friday night, then did parades and competitions on Saturdays. In my opinion, marching band members are just as much athletes as the football players. We were just trained in a different sport.

Also wanted to add, most marching bands have set sheets that show the placement of each band member for each set. Each person has a unique number on the field. We use the yard lines, hash marks, and sidelines to mark off our exact location. Between each set is a certain number of counts that tell the band member how many steps to take to get to their next set, and these counts correlate with the counts in the music. The standard step size is called “8-5” because we take 8 steps in 5 yards, but of course that is adjusted for each set and show, depending on your spot.

    @lightningbug3704 2 місяці тому +2

4:25 The band normally comes out during Half Time which is a break between the 1st and 2nd half of the game for the players and the fans. The band comes out to give a 'show' to everyone while the fans get their food, drinks, and wait until the beginning of the 2nd half of the game starts after Half Time. We normally practice the music in the band hall until we get that down by heart before practicing our movements on the field. Also, the band begins practice during the summer and has 'charts' which show the football field (or parking lot for when I was practicing in band). These charts would have dots on them where you are supposed to be at every measure or so, or just were big pieces are (depends on the music/performance/director). We go through each section of the performance over and over and over again until we are perfectly in line, on time, and in sync. You can spend hours out on the field practicing the same section over and over again. If you don't practice that much, you are liable to miss your steps, placement, or even step/fall on someone. One person out of place can ruin the whole picture so we need to have it drilled into our heads until it becomes muscle memory. (P.S sorry for the long rant)

I was an alto sax in high school in Texas, and then marched for UT-Arlington. Marching band is serious. If someone collapses, you keep formation and step over them and march with a hole in the formation. You have to have your music completely memorized as well as your spots on the field, which are broken down to specific points in the music. You start on your left foot and everyone is in sync until it's over. It also counts as a Phys Ed credit. Marching band is a sport unto itself.

Sadly, my high school had an amazing marching band (I played Flute, honestly the worst instrument to march) and the entire town always said we were the pride of the school along with our girls basketball team, but the school was always trying to take away our funds and even removed the PE credit bonus that was normally given when you participated in marching band. We lost so many band members because of that, they just didn’t have time in their schedule. Most took up other sports like track or dance and still had to find time to practice, go to work, and do their homework while also participating in speech and theater. Some of my classmates were insane, but they were great people.

I lived on OSU campus while in college in the early 90’s and I can remember on game nights everything stopped, it was a big party and everyone was in their OSU gear. Barbecues happening everywhere, people socializing with each other…even the campus police was mingling with everyone while supporting the football players, cheerleaders and the March band members! It was such an incredible atmosphere that’s so hard to describe in words. Honestly you would have to be there to understand the magnitude of it all!

Marching band has come a long way in 20 years! I did both high school and college marching band in South Carolina, then joined the US Marine Corps as a musician and did that for another 11 years. We went annually to a place called Estes Park in Colorado for the Scottish/Irish Highland Games when I was stationed out in Twentynine Palms and we did smaller shows very similar to this (Marine Bands only have 50 members each)...we even played Pirates, lol. I can certainly attest to the physical requirements of playing an instrument while moving!

The marching band comes in during half-time, the 12 minute break in the middle of the game. For the Super bowl they have a half time show with a celebrity collaboration instead.. Marching band was awesome when I did it, and you get multiple maps per formation and a number, on the bottom of the map, it has the number of steps your supposed to take to transition and where in the music that transition is. You learn the spots and music separately, and then put them all together. That was the real reason for band camp, to give people a chance to learn everything before school and football started. Including how to march properly.

Love your reaction and love marching bands. Ohio State is the best. They have several legendary half time shows. I was in high school marching band in New Jersey and college marching band (University of Delaware.) Lots of skill and practice involved, especially at this level. Other great college bands (with different styles) are the Texas A&M Marching Band. And, the Southern University Marching band -- their show at LSU this past season was amazing.

I was in marching band in high school and it was super fun and super hard work. We had two weeks of band camp in the summer right before football season started, then 3 hours of practice every Tuesday and Thursday after school, then a run through on Fridays, and then performed the shows on Friday nights at halftime of the games. Some of the best times of my life!

Constant endless hours of learning Spots, timing to move to the next, MEMORIZING the music, and keeping in time with everyone else, Marching band is NOT for the weak or lazy people. Its a dedication and passion that is unmatched. Thank you for showing what us band kids put ourselves through to put on the greatest show that we possibly can.

I was in the marching band in high school in the late 60’s. We had an incredible band director. We did a circus themed show once. We performed at the university of Florida pep rally in the stadium one year. It was a patriotic theme and we changed formations in the dark. When we got into position, we would turn on the red, white and blue lights on our hats. We ended the show with a slow dramatic performance of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. On the last note we kneeled and the color guard shot their guns. We got a five minute standing. The Vice President and our Governor were there.

Former member of the University of Arkansas Marching Razorback Band. We had daily practice learning new shows and new music every week during the football season. Memorized all aspects of the performance from the music to the show formations. It is hard work and takes athletic ability in many ways. Many people don't realize the time and effort these college students put into being a member of their band program. It was the greatest part of my time in college and I was proud to be a band member.

Hours and hours of practice both marching and musically. I was in marching band in high school. Small school. My senior year we had an amazing assistant director that wrote out parts for every instrument to boogie nights (a super long time ago). No other school had it and we also did a stutter step. We did this step right in front of the parade judges and as soon as we came out of it we started to play. We won the trophy! So much fun.

Yes, grew up in a small town where being in the highschool marching band was a big thing. We would practice our parade routine at 6 am before the start of our school day. Little kids and their moms would come running out the door in their pajamas to cheer us on as we marched up and down the neighborhood streets. Beyond performing at halftime shows, marching bands compete in field shows and parade competitions all summer. It was an amazing experience to travel the country to perform and compete, great memories, lifelong friendships and terrific lessons in teamwork and dedication.

Drum corps practice all winter long so they can compete with other drum corps in the summer months. In August the top drum corps meet in Indianapolis to compete for the top prize of a huge trophy! Yep. This is one of the great college marching bands, and they do a great job. A new show each week, and playing for a football crowd most of the time. The very top level is definitely DCI, but it's really a different animal. One show, practiced for the better part of a year (instead of a few weeks), and they are the show, instead of the halftime entertainment. Both great, just very different. Bluecoats "Tilt" show is a fine one, and there are many, many others that are highly worth seeing, whether you're reacting or not. Blue Devils, Carolina Crown, Santa Clara Vanguard...

I love watching marching bands! My husband and I met in the high-school trumpet section. Usually these performances are during half time at football games. There are choreographers that design drill. Every "picture" is designed on a sheet with all the places of every band member and how many counts from sheet to sheet which makes the movement. So you may have some marching in place while others are really bookin it to their set.....all while stepping at the beat and playing the music and keeping your steps from coming thru your music (hard to explain this) and your instruments at the same angle as one another. So not only do you memorize your music you also memorize your individual drill. In high-school we would have contests every weekend against multiple schools. A lot of time goes into these even at the highschool level. Our band would be on the practice field half an hour before school until first period was over, three hours after school three days a week, play all home games on Fridays, contest every saturday and every day of the week for 2 months over the summer. Our band put in way more hours than the football team if you can believe that! Some of the best memories!

In the early 90's, I was in high school marching band. Our directors had software that had dots on a screen with the football field lines underneath. Each spot had a number, and were assigned accordingly. You could track each spot. It printed out each final position, and if needed, the frames between. It was cool.
Also, the "leader/s" is/are called drum majors. They are like conductors and mostly are on the sidelines on raised areas so we can all see and keep the tempo. The ones on the field here were baton twirlers. The ones doing the fabrics are usually on the color guard / steppers / high flyers team.
One year, the woodwinds (myself included) got to use flags along with the high flyers to help out during one of the shows. We had an extra week of training that year.

I attended LSU (Louisiana State University), where we have the (Grammy-nominated) Golden Band from Tigerland. These types of performances are done during halftime by the band of the home team -- so they must prepare at least 5 to 8 unique performances each year, which are performed in all kinds of weather (scorching heat to freezing cold, rain, snow, etc.) during football season -- between the beginning of September and end of November. Then there are competitions they participate in outside of these football game performances. College marching bands are MAJOR!🎉

I played the clarinet for the first two years and then was on the colorguard (flags and rifles) for the last two. We marched in the Cherry Blossom parade in Washington DC and also for the opening of Epcot at Disney in Florida. For our show, we had two weeks of band camp, where we learned the music and the show.
