    Thank you very much for the mention I truly appreciate it, the ban partially happened in 2010, and fully in 2012.
    I'm on the fence on this one, old kata guruma is insane, or Te guruma, I think the 2010-2012 was best in my opinion the ban was partial.
    Watch my recent talk with Neil Adams, he's one the men that changed the rules, alongside Yamashita, Inoue etc. You can hear it from the horse's mouth.

      @@jaymorris3468 They're doing a throw that they call kata-guruma, but I would dispute that this throw has the essential properties of kata guruma.
      On the other hand, the Japanese naming conventions, while once instructive, have drifted over the years, and there are now quite a few others where either the name or the throw have drifted from what we understood 30 years ago.

      Judo was good when leg-grabs were allowed. I liked having to defend against them, even though I didn't do them myself. It meant that judo was complete against every attack. People learning judo today are not learning a complete art. They are unable to defend against leg-grabs because they don't encounter them.

    Lots of sports got nerfed when joined Olympics, like Taekwondo too. Lots of clubs now teach the sport by the olympic rules, not the martial art itself. Leg grabs are one of the best for self defense.

  • @Haolekine888

    There was a year that leg grabs were fine as a secondary attack. Another words; you could do ko uchi and feed the leg into your hand for kuchiki taoshi. This was a great option.
    There was also a year that you could score unlimited waza Ari and the only way to score ippon was with an ippon throw, 25 second pin, or submission. That was also an excellent year as every match was decided with players swinging for the fences.

    • @Drikkerbadevand
      @Drikkerbadevand 2 роки тому +1

      this. they could just make any match only immediately winnable by scoring ippon, otherwise it's unlimited wazari and whoever has the most at the end of the timer will win, if it's the same or 0, golden score as usual. And then they could allow leg grabs, either only as a counter or whatever, but it could only score wazari, meaning it's discouraged slightly because you can't get an ippon with it

    • @Sam-rb1id
      @Sam-rb1id Рік тому

      I definitely think that if you want to encourage certain behaviours you can do it by tweaking the scoring. No need to ban techniques and even worse the techniques are now removed from the grading syllabus so they are not just out of the olympics but lost to Judo altogether! :(

    At one point before the rule change came into play, you couldn't go for the leg as a primary attack but you could as a counter, so if someone reached over and took a high grip over your shoulder you could counter with Te Guruma etc. Personally I'd be happy with this as a compromise to today's rules.
    I do understand why the decision was made and I also understand why so many people weren't happy with it either but I think the sport benefits from being in the Olympics ultimately.

      Definitely, and you can restrict it to by only allowing it to be initiated from a proper kumi kata, so proper grip first, and only as a counter and you're given a shido hell even han-soto-make if it's done at the wrong time, so you maybe discourage, but not outright ban them.

    Great videos just found you recently.
    I believe in training complete Kodokan Judo, you can introduce and go over everything that entails, but it all has to be measured through the lense of each individual students ability to dial it back for competition and also were they are at in their martial arts journey. Obviously if they are going to compete in those rule sets you don't want to train an individual whose entire fight strategy rests on those throws but everyone needs to learn and understand them as they are recognized throws that cross fighting disciplines and zero exposure means you can't stop or counter them. Also, Olympic Judo isn't Kodokan Judo it's watered down for the ignorant public, television cameras and the some ignorant members of the IOC, regardless of whether or not Kano Sensei wanted Judo in the Olympic games.

    I thought it was because of its origins in japanese jiu-jitsu, coming from the samurai fighting with weapons and going down to attack the legs would put the warrior in a bad position to be killed going for the legs. I think something similar can be seen in greco-roman wrestling concentrating on being top heavy vs freestyle as in origins it came from armed combat

    Not the best idea. If you watch kata it looks like they move like robots. It’s because the kata is designed to be done wearing full suit of samurai armor. So keeping with the true spirit of Judo’s roots if you were to do a double leg take down on a samurai, he would stab you with his sword right to your neck or back. Better option to trip or throw ending in dominant position on top to draw your sword and strike.

    I think olympics try to display specific skills. That's why sports that want to be in Olympics have to modify their ruleset so there are not too much skills that overlap from one sport to an other...
    Saying that, I'm aware that between more traditional Olympic sports there is a lo of skill overlap (like running for instance).
    But Taekwondo had to stick to kicks, even thought they have punches and grappling like karate...Karate had to adapt to point system etc...

  • @jaymorris3468
    @jaymorris3468 3 роки тому

    The logic is sound in banning them but at the time I was furious. It was because the scoring for medals meant that,
    at the time scoring for leg take downs counted and as long as one Judoka was in the lead they could hang on to it without any of the spectacular throws that judo is known for, hence the take downs were the same as wrestling, and they're two separate sports that ended up looking similar, so since the ban Judos throws have perfected and the true spirit of kuzushi, tsukuri and kaki have come into play, showing beautiful throwing techniques in order to score, and let's be honest before that, a. Match often looked like BJJ, the scoring changed too, no more kokas, (3 points and all a leg grab often got for sitting an opponent on their ass) or Yukos(5points) now it's wazari (7points) or ippon (10 points or one whole point, scored by a throw flat on back, 2 wazaris, submission or 25 second hold down, I know confusing but means one whole point is same as 10points), I would have kept Yukos because I feel ippons are given which would not have counted in the old system, also I would have kept hold downs to 30 seconds. I'm still not sure about teguruma, I know it's banned but it's the counter I'm not sure about, thank god uranage is still allowed.

    I commented on Chadi´s channel on this same topic. In my view leg grab ban was a MAJOR disservice to Judo, no excuses are valid. Central Asians and Judoka from the Caucasus and Russia with Free Style Wrestling background were dominating international competition and the Japanese were not happy about it. What they have done now is that Judo resembles Greco-Roman Wrestling and Mongolians and others are dominating competitions. Did the Olympic Committee say that Judo resembled Free Style Wrestling and therefore people are bored so let´s get rid of Judo? If that´s the case, is Judo more entertaining now? Sacrificing many techniques for the sake of pride or politics has changed Judo negatively. Many Judo schools in the West, no longer teach leg grabs to young learners. By Judo becoming an Olympic sport, important parts of it have been sacrificed, including Newaza that is not taught properly or enough at many Judo schools in the West. Freestyle Judo is really attractive, well-rounded and much more similar to the real Judo. By the way, the Japanese are nowhere near as good at Wrestling as some other countries and most likely due to traditional mindset, few Japanese Wrestlers and Judoka, cross train, therefore the Japanese encountered Judoka with strong Wrestling background at the Olympics only, and not at home. With all due respect to the Japanese, I still believe that their PRIDE has affected Judo in a very negative way as I am sure they were the ones behind those rule changes and not the Olympic Committee. Again, this is my personal point of view, many may not agree.
