Just my opinion, BJJ is popular because the Gracie were slick when they marketed the art. With MMA becoming widely popular BJJ became the flavor of the month. Growing up, Judo schools were few and far in between, NOW I can count 10 BJJ schools in my area and only know of 1 Judo school.

Crazy hey? Bjj is much much stronger when it comes to marketing. IJF can learn a few things from them. The pb when uve been around for longer and are so big is that your not as nibble/agile to make ajustments to the times. I feel they got complacent and maybe too many old geezers at the top who are set in their ways. Things should change over time hopefully.

It is crazy how popular bjj has gotten.
Though the value proposition is heavily in Judo's favor if one only needs casual sport/hobby or self defense.
It's way cheaper and works very very well in street self defense (even more so if you some boxing defense tactics).
Bad a$$ery comes at a premium... bjj
One of the reason's judo isn't promoted with the same vigor as bjj is that long ago it was decided judo should not be associated with thugs and criminals- so the image of a judoka must be of an upstanding person.

In the U.K. you can do “technical judo” meaning you don’t have to concern yourself with competition. It’s there if you want it but you don’t have to do it to be graded. I think this was a great idea from the BJA and is all about trying to encourage older participants to continue in judo or even start doing judo.

Arts like Judo, wrestling, boxing, Taekwondo and even karate are doing themselves a huge disfavour. Because there area a lot (AND I MEAN A LOT!) of guys over 20,30,40 and even 50 wanting to learn them. But those arts focus only on competitors and medals which kids are obviously the best pick for. But it's just a few % of those that get international level good at it so the rest usually leaves by the time they're in theyr early 20's. BJJ, Muay Thay, even kickboxing and MMA have a lot of adult classes where You can train and not get hurt badly at least so no wonder they're more popular and visited. So to the olympic sports it's theyr own fault for not going that route.

I like both arts; Judo and BJJ. In the upside I would say that BJJ gives more longevity in the sense that the focus of the art is not to throw you, focusing on the ground game.
But on the Judo upside, I would say is more practical for street self defense.

Judo is more popular than BJJ, by far. I live in England, UK & pretty much every little town & village has a judo club within easy driving distance. BJJ seems to be getting more media attention because judo is not very popular in the USA, which is where a lot of media comes from.
I also think BJJ's affiliation with MMA enables it to reach the attention of many people who do not even practise any martial arts - MMA has far more & arm chair fans & viewers than it does practitioners

Judo's numbers are inflated by kids practioners, is well know that in schools in Japan the time you need to practice it is quite small also, even if just unofficially so. I suppose is like soccer in my country schools. Honestly wouldn't trust much these numbers. MMA is definitely a spectators sport, don't see the problem with it. As for BJJ, is growing strong, and was capable in little time of carving a niche to itself and made itself a very prestigious martial art. While judo numbers are mostly a result of the Olympics programs and japanese\asian cultural soft power, also nothing wrong with it of course.

agree 100%, in terms of wrestling in the UK, the kids clubs are packed but there's only a handful of people in the adults class. Helio Gracie was by far the weakest opponent Kimura faced. According to newspapers published in Sao Paulo after the match, Kimura said, “I thought of throwing and choking out Helio in 10 seconds or so. But I toyed with Helio to entertain the spectators, instead.”. Iwao Kanetsuri (Kimura's student at Takushoku University Judo Club, 1971 All Japan Judo Champion), who has watched the entire footage of the match, testified in a Japanese TV program that Kimura caught Helio in choke or armlock more than 20 times at will but deliberately released them to entertain the spectators. In fact, Helio admitted that he had been choked out but was re-activated by Kimura during the match. So, Helio did not have the ability to last 13minutes 20 seconds. Kimura deliberately made Helio last that long. Kimura could have finished Helio at any time, and chose to finish Helio in R2 at 3:20.
In May 1935, Kimura fought Ken-ichirou Oosawa at the 5th dan division championship. Oosawa reversed Kimura's Oo-soto-gari, and slammed Kimura's head onto the floor to score Ippon, rendering Kimura unconscious. Oosawa was the only man in history who made Kimura unconscious.

Kimura was a beast, his student not so much, was took down and gave his back to Rickson, was defeated very easily. As for Helio, he has his win against Kato, and his draws against the same Kato and the likes of Yano and Ono brothers. He was quite successful against Judokas for all the 💩 people talk about him. His brother George Gracie was even more successful. Kimura's win over the Gracies was a outlier, a exception to the rule.

@@johnrambo4259 There's definitely things on BJJ that doesn't exist in judo. In the 50s BJJrs were already using double legs, and a kind that doesn't exist in judo, that is a double leg different of the Morote gari. The technical stand up is another that doesn't exist in judo, there is evidence of existing in capoeira before in BJJ, and was probably from where BJJ got. And judo definitely wasn't the only martial art the Gracies learned, they learned from the Brazilian Catch Wrestler Dudu, and George Gracie even became a catch wrestling champ 🏆. Dudu was also a Graeco wrestler, and there is photographic evidence of the Gracies training with the father of Luta Livre Brasileira Tatu Hatem. Is silly to believe that all about leglocks that the Gracies knew they learned from Judo given their training in Catch Wrestling and Luta Livre, and how much the relationship of judo with leglocks was brief and shallow. A proof of this is how BJJ itself with a longer and stronger relationship had to look for catch wrestlers help when leglocks became more popular. Anything that is strictly no-gi is definitely not from judo either. Also BJJ is fundamentally different for throwing away pin / immobilization fundament and putting a Mount and or Back Mount fundament in place. It's not different from the relation between kickboxing and karate, kickboxing definitely started with karate, but to say that there is nothing from outside of karate, and that there is no work in it or no new thing is just dishonest. Guys like Ramon Dekkers and Alistair Overeem are definitely not using just karate. And yeah regarding what you said about given credits, isn't like judo does it itself, most people know Maeda's name that they know the name of Kano's teachers or the name of their Ryu. So obviously a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

  • @wayne47able

The reason why BJJ is more popular is because it gave birth to modern MMA and has a style that’s more conducive to a fluid transition into MMA. In Judo they don’t teach good habits that are conducive to fighting. For example, when a Judoka hits the floor he gives up his back out of fear of the ippon. When a BJJ guy hits the floor, that’s where the fight has just begun and many innovations to the guard emerged because of that. Also in BJJ most submissions are legal and you can attack the legs for a takedown. in Judo the submission game is very limited and you can’t attack the legs at all. BJJ gives you more ways to finish a fight and the Judo does not. Plus BJJ is more easily assessable than Judo is.

Turning the back to avoid the ippon is just. A competition thing, like BJJ players pulling guard or butt scooting.
Also, a BJJ players getting thrown to the floor is only tolerable because they're on an impact absorbent mat. In reality such a thing would injure or knock them out. It's where the fight would end, not begin.

BJJ is light and the market is for older people as you can do it as you can older .. but getting slammed on the mat after 40 is hard!
Also competition wise the IBJJF has belts divisions ages master 1 2 3 4 5 etc..
Judo under IJF younger vs older.
Also IBJJF has blue purple brown belt world champions etc.. which means technically that anybody can be a world champion even as white belt...
that's why it is more a business..

@@DruidK9 glad I saw this! I don’t normally check YT notifications. I live locally too in fredericksburg and did judo with chuck on and off. He’s a great teacher. He doesn’t make you sign contracts or anything either so if you need or want to stop you can, easily. He’s also a bjj brown belt and former collegiate wrestler. Dudes awesome. After covid slows down I will be back there

@@Reddogg387 I’m glad to hear that. I’ve narrowed down my choices to two dojos, my only concern with Judo class is that in most of the advertising and social media, it looks like their classes are more geared towards kids and not adults. I’m 29 and a big guy, I want to be sparring with adults. What’s your take on that? Their BJJ classes look like mostly adults so that’s good.

@@DruidK9 which is the other dojo you’re looking at? Is it the KiM martial arts or something? Chuck is 100% the best judo sensei in this area. No offense to the others, but it isn’t close. As for judo, he mixes the classes with adults and older kids. In my experience, there’s always a smal group of adults at least. There were some big dudes there, like one guy was 300 lbs and another around upper 200s. I’m not sure if they are there anymore. I haven’t been since covid. But there were always adults. If you do go there, You get a free class too. It is Olympic based judo , so it’s maybe 80/20 throws to ground. He does include basic newaza tho which is great. I can’t say anything negative about chuck. I’ve come in for a month, left for a few, come back... repeat multiple times. And never once did I feel pressured or anything. There’s a local jits club in 22405 which is extremely cult like that makes you feel like you’re singing your rights away. Chuck is the exact opposite

BJJ is much easier on a large person's frame whereas Judo was developed for small people. Large people are extremely effective at Judo sparring and competition but have extreme difficulty pulling off the kata expectations. After Judo banned leg attacks it lost 100% of its crossover potential in MMA or street self-defense ultimately sealing its fate as an obsolete martial art in the United States

Respectfully judo is still way more popular in the world, this may not be true in US and a few other places but worldwide judo is huge. I started judo at 36 and still practice at 58. Judo is aimed at kids because it was designed as an education system not a self defense system even though it is pretty good at that too. The IJF is focussed on competition safety which Kano supported and because of this the deadly and damaging variants and techniques are often not shown to students. Bjj was designed for open tournaments similar to mma and markets itself heavily it is a business first and foremost and is more focussed on entertainment and self defence than competitor safety this is not so bad as it is typically aimed at more mature persons.

ahhhh ok ok , that was very insightful, i had a question regarding where's the atemi waza in judo and i think you just answered a big part of that question. Thanks Gerard, i'll have to make a video answering that question and adding my 2 cents to it also. By the way, i also started Judo at 36, im 42 now. Osu!

@@OGFITNESS Thanks my brother, I did karate for 7 years and have studied the martial arts and martial sports for my entire life, honestly think that the best defense is to not be there and if you are then communication is still more important, most of the benefits are for health and mental resilience.

BJJ isn't Olympic, and I wouldn't count on most lay people to know much about judo either. BJJ is a prestigious martial art between the people that know about martial arts, and deserved this prestige, the fact that they did it without the Olympics by private initiative is quite impressive.

I think its because for the most part Judo schools in North America only caters to kids and teens and not adults. Also Judokas do not promote their art properly unlike BJJ practitioners. And for some reason its hard to find a Judo dojo.

agree, Judo's marketing sucks, and they don't cater at all to adults, Bjj does those two things extremely well, i think Judo should also cater to the adults, not just on kids and olympics.
