    Very professionally done video! With a few not to do's, what to look out for and cautions. Wish more folks doing these videos would do theirs like yours. It would eliminate a lot of confusion.

      Thanks Steve, I agree, that's why I make them the way I do. I figure anyone coming to my channel should get what they need from any videos I put up. Otherwise why waste the time to produce it if it's not going to answer the most obvious questions needed to do the job. I appreciate your comment it makes the time and effort into doing these videos worth it. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

    Out of all the videos, I found this video to be the best. I did this yesterday on my 2005 Chrysler T&C with the 3.3 engine. The key is the 4 inch extension to get that top bolt. I used 15 inch deep socket, 3 inch 3/8 wobble extension, then a 1/2 inch to 3/8M adapter. That allowed me to use a bigger socket wrench to break that sucker loose without taking out radiator fans, support bar and other stuff like some others did. I also sprayed pb blaster a few times. Once loose, came out like butter. Use a short 15 mm on the bottom and your done. Also 13 mm for the two nuts were easy to get off. What took me the longest was running to the auto store twice to get my deep socket and then later the adapter set. I had these tools already, but I'm disorganized. Lol, so I spent time looking for them around the house and then I just waited in line forever and bought the tools. Also, be gentle with the electric cords and connections. My red one, the plastic felt brittle and I was afraid of breaking it. Definitely don't want to pay and fool around replacing that. Good luck with your project!

      Wow love the adapter setup you did, whatever gets the job done is what's needed sometimes. Not long after filming this video the battery cable to the starter has so much corrosion in it that it gave out and we had to replace it. Hope all goes well for you. PS I have a Caravan Playlist. Check it out to see some more videos you may need later. Thanks for the nice comment. Best wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

      @@keithnoneya Thanks, Keith. This job proves that you just need the right tools. Otherwise, take those fans off. I was/am somewhat worried with my red cable. There's a spot where the old owner had installed the battery, but the red cable was touching the battery and kind of burned a spot in it. I think I'm fine, but that will be my next step. Good to keep the battery cables away from the battery and it gets hot. So far, my starter has started the van 7 out of 7 times!!!

    Thanks for the detailed video. The only difference I had on my 99 was that the ground cable was on the other side of the engine block so I only had to disconnect it from the battery. I was unable to get any sockets on the two mounting bolts. Didn't have any ratcheting wrenches so I had to back them out 1/4 turn at a time. Rest assured when I went to get the new starter I stopped by Walmart and bought a small $20 set of metric ratcheting wrenches and the starter installation took less than 10 minutes.

    This is a great video.
    Everything was going just as planned until time to get the new one into place. I'm not kidding, it is Impossible with that plate that needs to be just right from underneath alone. After 2 hours I gave up and started making room from above. I removed a piece of plastic which spanned the width of the front (2 bolts and 2 plastic plugs) and then the metal cross brace (4 bolts). I then removed the 2 radiator fans (1 screw and an electrical connection the same as the starter). The fans pull right out. This opened a nice space too see where the starter needed to go and get that plate just right. Doing this also makes getting the top double bolt out and back in so much easier. All this extra dismantling and putting back together only took about 10 minutes. Save yourself some frustration and do it right away.
    I'm no mechanic and this is the first time I've ever done something like this. Without this video (and another one that does advise what I explained above) I would have had an expensive towing charge and repair bill. I thank you and the countless others out there who provide this type of content.

      You Welcome Jeff that's why I made the video. Yeah the plate is a real tough one, as you probably saw in my second video on the subject. I've been doing mechanic work for 30 plus years. Sometime you've got to be a contortionist. I hope you watched both videos. If you used the tools I suggested it probably would have worked out for you without doing the way you did, but hey as a mechanic I know there's more than one way to skin a cat. Good job on getting job without a lot of experience. Thanks for watching.

    Excellent video.
    On my 2000 town country you have to remove the air cleaner box if you want to attack the top bolt from above. I had success with the top bolt using a box end 15mm from below. Toughest part for me was getting the new starter in without the metal plate falling off. Thanks again.

    Good job on this video. Not only did you list the tools we needed to have available, but you also illustrated potential pitfalls of the removal/reinstall so we were prepared.
    We didn't have the two adapters to create a 1" extension or a stubby socket wrench, but with EXTREME patience, you can get the top starter bolt out with just a 3" extension and a deep well 15mm socket using a 1/2" drive wrench. I had to start with my 1/2" breaker bar and a pipe though! That sucker was fused!
    One thing we had to deal with was on the bottom starter bolt removal, if you get a good head of steam on the removal using a standard depth socket, you can get the head of the wrench too far up against the part that is directly opposite the bolt and not be able to get the wrench out. I had to use a screwdriver to flip the direction on my socket wrench and tighten it back in a bit to get the wrench loose.

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  5 років тому

      Very Good tips Steve. That's one thing I learned doing mechanic work is that there is more than one way to do the job and you can use just about an endless assortments to get the job done.
      Backing the tool out into something is a pretty common problem. That's why if you ever purchase some of those reversible combination ratchet wrenches you ALWAYS buy the ones with the lever on them. They are not as strong but you won't have to cut them or the bolt off if you back them up to where you can't get them off. Also because they aren't as strong only use them to do the majority of the work and leave the breaking bolts free and final tightening to a regular wrench or socket. Thanks for the nice comment. I try to do all my videos this way for folks like you. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

    ATTN: These two bolts *can be taken out with both a 13 and 15 mm ratcheting combination wrench- once you study it enough, and have patience! What Keith fails to mention- and all starter replacements YT on this engine- is that it’s *very difficult to get hands on both sides (bolts and starter), which is necessary to align the bolts in their holes on installation. The thin dust shield is it *impossible to align unless you put it on and then tape it to the New starter, but make sure that its in place before you tighten anything- and tighten only after both bolts are in!
    THANKS, Chrysler, for jamming everything into that tiny under hood space.... I learned a lesson here, and astonished at the important parts that (almost*every) YT fixit videos omit.
    I just finished my install and wanted to help if you’re about to commence. Applies to T&C and V models with 3.8L

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  5 років тому

      - I mention the plate in the video @ 8:20 and how important it is. When I installed it I didn't use any tape on it, but that is a good idea, as others have mentioned before in some of the other comments, great minds think alike.
      - I suppose you could use a 15 mm wrench on a 13 mm bolt, but if you have the correct wrench to begin with I don't know why anyone would risk rounding off the bolt head by using the wrong size on it.
      - I didn't mention the how to get your hands on both the starter and the bolts for installation in this video is because I discuss that in the installation video, Part 2. As with all vehicle maintenance there are going to be some things that are harder than others. Lisa Douglass below using this video did her's in an hour. I also had a 70 grandmother do it using this video. It's a matter of not giving up and doing it the way you find best for you. I grew up in a mechanics shop and the one thing I noticed about mechanics, they rarely agree oh how to do a job the same way. I hope the video helped, you didn't mention if it did, or didn't. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

    • @cluek9780
      @cluek9780 5 років тому

      Keith, your video *did acquaint me with the situation, and for that I’m grateful. Must admit I didn’t read all the comments nor Pt2. I only used 15mm on 15mm, and- if you’ll check it out- you’ll see that using a (short 8”) racheting combo wrench is indeed possible because they’re each a capped bolt flush with the mount.
      I know there’s many ways to skin a cat, and finding the easiest can be hard. Mechanics have my respect for their patience!

    Safety note: Before working on anything safely you should disconnect the battery. However, you should ALWAYS disconnect the "Negative" or "Ground" terminal NOT the positive terminal.
    The reason is that the negative side is connected to the ENTIRE vehicle, and the positive is not. So by disconnecting from the negative the battery is COMPLETELY isolated.
    BTW - this is standard safety practice which is recommended and taught by every car maker.

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  7 років тому +1

      I agree with you for dual batteries but for single batteries either is safely usable since both must be connected for current flow, but I agree NOT recommended. On a single battery vehicle If you remove the Positive or the Negative and touch the body nothing will happen. However for a good safety measure I agree with you it's a good practice to do the negative first, but not for the reason you mentioned. It's good practice because if you're not paying attention on a dual battery vehicle, like my F350 Diesel, you could get a few sparks. It's also a good practice to let the engine compartment air out for a minute or two just in case battery gasses are present, which could cause the battery to explode when the terminal sparks during removal. Thanks for the tip and observation, and keeping a close eye on safety for us, it's ALWAYS welcome.
      I hope the rest of the video was helpful. Thanks for watching.
      Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

    • @rbhawaii2
      @rbhawaii2 7 років тому +1

      Keith Noneya - Sorry but safe practice says that you should ALWAYS wrench the "grounded" side first, and last (when finished), for the simple reason that you want to disconnect the chassis (entire car) on first touch, and reconnect it on last touch.
      Many people have welded a wrench while disconnecting the battery because they tooled with the hot side while the chassis is grounded. it would take some talent to short a battery while messing with the grounded terminal of the battery!

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  7 років тому

      Yep, I agree that's why the grounded side is usually on the outside of the vehicle near the fender, while the positive is usually towards the engine with most items farther away that a wrench lenght. But not always, as iv'e seen vehicles with the positive right next to the fender. Why a manufacture would make a vehicle with the positive near the fender is beyond me. It can be a serious safety hazard. I make it a point to never put any tool on the battery. Although on a very RARE occasion I have found my self doing it, and I correct it as soon as I see it. I did it once about 30 years ago, that wrench got brown red real fast, I was blessed that the battery didn't blow up in my face. I hit it with a ratchet and easily knocked it off. Although it's not correct, I usually do the positive side because I clean the terminal after it's removed. Then I put it back on when the job is done. Yep it's not the safest method but I guess stubborn that way. I've been working on cars for over 30 years and It's wrong but old habits "die' ' hard I guess. Never had an issue with it, as i'm aware of the danger and very careful with it. In my future videos i'm going to point that out, because of your responses. Maybe some day it'll catch up with me and i'll weld a wrench to the fender. Then i'll do a "This is not how to disconnect a battery" video and show the carnage. It could happen tonight!, But by my track record i'll be dead before it happens. Thanks again for the safety observation RB. Seriously!
      Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

      Thanks Tam. Working on vehicles can be rewarding, but it can also be very difficult and extremely dangerous if you don't get someone who is familiar with it.I work on my just plain old daily driver because I can't afford a better car. So for me right now it's out of necessity. However working on sports cars and hot rods can be for fun. I used to have a 1969 Fiat 124 Spider, a 1971 Chevelle HS, a 1974 Trans Am 400ci 4spd. When I retire I have a 1969 GTO with a 400ci engine in it that I plan to restore. Heres a few video links of a 1969 GTO. Keep in mind that mine is a hardtop, Black Paint, Black Vinyl Top with Black Interior. Also I have the Hideaway Headlights, but no rear spoiler. Other than that it's just like this one. Links:

    I have a question I have a 1999 Grand plymouth Voyager the auto parts store said do I have a oval starter or a square starter do u know

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  7 років тому

      Hi Isiah, it depends on the engine, 3.0, 2.something. Usually If I don't know I just go look at the one on the car and then look at eBay pictures for that year. Also you can look at some videos on how to do the job, I highly recommend that, then go look at the one on your car again. It's the best way to figure it out without having a mechanic to do it. Of course if you have a friends or know someone with mechanic experience they can always take a look for you. If you're not familiar with mechanic work it's a good idea to take it to one for piece of mind. A starter change will run you about $250.00 bucks if you shop around, and that can save you a lot of headaches when the car won't start. However, before you change the starter make sure and check your battery voltage and clamps. They tend to get corrosion all over them and that can cause your starter to appear weak when it's really that the starter isn't getting enough juice. A bad alternator can also not be charging your battery that can also make the starter appear weak. Most auto parts stores, like Pep-Boys, Autozone etc. will check your battery, alternator and starters for free. Of course to check them, except the battery, you have to remove them and take it to them. Some shops also have amp clamps and can check your alternator and battery without removing them. So if you can get your car to a shop to check them it should help you narrow down the list of possible problems. Hope that help guide you in the right direction. Feel free to ask any questions I monitor my page regularly. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

      Hi Angelo, go to time index 5:00 and start to watch from there. I tell you where it should be safe to place them and why. Also I can't say it enough, after you've jacked the vehicle up, "Never under any circumstances crawl under a vehicle without Jack Stands supporting it!" I've seen vehicles fall, trust me you don't want to be under there when it happens. One fell on my dad, and he's a professional mechanic. He forgot to block the tires when he pulled a vehicles driveline and he was on a slope. So when he pulled the driveline it rolled back and off the jack and hit him in the chest. He was blessed in that he had placed blocks of wood under the car and it landed on them and his chest, he was just barely able to squeeze out. Ok with that said, since I'm not there to help you please know what you're doing before you jack up and crawl under a vehicle. If you're not familiar with safely working on vehicles get someone to help you who is. You're life is worth more than the cost of having someone put a starter in it for you. Hope that helps. @@angeloyourreflection9331 Hi Angelo, I have a bunch of videos on the caravan and different repairs. Many of them require the van to have the wheels blocked, the van jacked up and jack stands placed under it. There are a few good places to put them. Anywhere under the box frame is a good choice unless it gets in the way of the job you're doing. If that's the case pick another spot under the frame, axle or connection points for the lower control arms. Try skipping through a few of the videos to find the different areas I place the jack and jack stands. You can also watch a few other UA-cam videos for other peoples perspectives on where the to place them. If you don't have a Chilton's or Haynes service manual on the van I highly suggest you get one. They will also show you good points to jack up and place jack stands under the van as well. If you lived near me in Slidell, Louisiana I'd come over and show you. Other than the video it's kinda hard to just show you or tell you. Just do some video watching and you'll figure it out, it's not hard once you figure it out, you'll probably laugh and say that's all there is to it! If I can do it i'm sure you could do it. I am a pencil pusher, have no experience at all........you didn't use a breaker bar, it is ok to use a ratchet instead? You have saved so many people lots of time. If I didn't have a video, it would probably take me days to do it. thank you!!!!!!

      Hey Oregon, love that state. I used to date a girl named Beth in Harrisburg, miss that girl, LOL! Anyways I list the tools you will use or are most likely to use. I have a saying "The best tool to use is the one that gets the job done On Time, Safely & Reliably". So pick the tool that best suits how you want to do the job. If the bolt is on really tight it is best to use the breaker bar, as a cheap ratchet may slip, break or let go and you'll smash your knuckles. Take your time and do the job right the first time. Make sure all the cables are clean and not frayed, if they are clean them or replace them. I had to change the Positive Battery Cable later, as it was corroded inside causing the voltage to be low (8vdc) at the starter, when it was normal, approx. (12vdc), at the battery. PLEASE USE JACK STANDS under the car as shown in the video. DO NOT trust your LIFE to those flimsy tire jacks, also most driveways are sloped so chock the rear wheels front and back. Feel free to ask questions. Since you're new to automotive mechanics I can't suggest HIGHLY enough that you get a friend who is familiar with it to help you & to be a safety observer. @@oregon8712 Yep I talk about those bolts at time index 2:34 (13mm) and at time index 3:11 for the (15mm), good eye bud. On those ramps I watched a video where a guy was pulling a transmission and he didn't chalk the tires and it rolled off the ramps on to him. He was ok as he was able to move to an area under the truck fast enough where nothing would crush him. Had it been a car he probably would have been crushed. His friends were able to stop the car rolling and he got out with only a few bruises and scratches.
      In my videos, WHEN POSSIBLE, I do four safety things. 1. Block the tires, 2.Put Jack Stands under the frame of the vehicle. 3. Leave the hydraulic jack raised under the vehicle with little to no tension. 4.Three if the tire comes off most of the time I will put it under the frame of the car where it won't be in my way. Being safe it always paramount, cars come and go people and limbs don't. Oh also make sure you disconnect the battery before you pull the starter, or you can end up welding the ratchet to the frame and burn the car down. A good friend with experience is Highly advised. It would make getting the negative ground wire off that bolt under the exhaust crossover tube a little easier. However I usually don't have folks do extra step unless they don't have the needed sort of special tools to do the job. That's why I give a tool list in all my mechanic videos. Also feel taking out the battery is just one more things that could go wrong, like dropping it or getting battery acid on their clothes and that would also make the video longer that it is already. I'd have to put some safety stuff in there as well. You do have a good idea though for folks familiar with doing automotive work. Thanks for the comment. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

  • @fcaughli
    @fcaughli 2 роки тому +1

    Great video. Not to be critical but it is always best to remove the negative battery cable first instead of the positive. If a wrench slips or hits part of the metal body it can make a hell of a spark and that suddenly could end up hurting you, along with other dangers from sparks. The negative is already part of the body connection so it cannot do any bad as long as you don't hit it to that positive cable connection.
    Seen these kind of bad things happen before. Not saying I have not done the positive first when it was much easier. But I would be very careful and was aware of the danger. Inexperienced people may not be.

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Fred, I agree, mostly. Normally I do the Negative first just for that reason. It's best to remove both of them, Negative 1st, and place plastic caps on them. If you only remove one terminal and place a wrench or your arm across the body/frame, and the terminal you removed, you can get a nasty little bite from the battery. In my early years I have removed the Negative before, as you said not realizing there's still a danger. On this particular vehicle I've done that and gotten shocked. I got shocked when my arm was hot and sweaty and I put my arm from the fender and accidentally touched the Negative terminal with my wrist, that lit me up pretty good. So I usually do the Positive only and keep aware of where my tools are. Been having fun with cars for over 35 years and have even accidentally placed a huge wrench across both battery terminals at once. It didn't take but a few seconds for that wrench to get red hot before I was able to knock it free with another wrench, Scared the pants off me, LOL. So no matter which terminal you remove there's that same danger if you don't remove both terminals and cap them. Thanks again Fred for looking our for me and my viewer's, much appreciated. @@keithnoneya Yes you are right actually both of them should be removed neg first and capped off. And on some vehicles that battery is all right there where you are working. Needs everything capped off. I am a 45 year monkey and even I have had a little tingly burn like you say while still being careful. It usually takes some moisture or sweat but it can happen. And what is also dangerous is when you suddenly jump from a burn or big spark and that gets you hurt! With these videos for us that are experienced we tend to think the newbies know to be careful but they don’t always. Hard to remember to teach the newbies everything, but I guess we should be extra careful when instructing them.
      I don’t agree with all of the censoring and especially political stuff but if I was in control of youtube I would get rid of some of the auto repair videos. I see people showing, sometimes even encouraging dangerous practices with the procedures for the work or even real bad safety practices. And even if you bring things up to them respectfully they want to fight back instead of admitting the wrongs. I am pretty touchy about when people work on brakes or steering. Mistakes and shortcuts in those areas can get people killed.

    • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  2 роки тому +1

      @@fcaughli I couldn't agree more. That's actually one of the reasons I started doing automotive repairs on my channel. I grew up in a garage and I was watching videos on YT that scared the heck out of me and I said to myself these guys are going to get someone killed. I try to stress safety in all my videos when I see an issue, especially jacks and jack stands. One of my favorite guys to watch is Scotty Kilmer, but man that dude is dangerous for the novice. I've even commented on some of his videos specifically to him, he's never answered me. I can't remember the guys name but he watched a video on how to change the brakes and was using the van screw jack to hold up the car while crawling under it. He does a lot of videos like that, he even says in his videos not to comment on that or he'll delete your comment and ban you from making comments on his channel. Those are the guys that made me start making vehicle videos. I've done a few risky videos myself, but I mention it in my video and offer a better way in the comment and or at the end of my video. My Caravan Rear Leaf Spring Comes to mind. I was trained by my dad and friends and by reading a lot of books. I worked in a garage with him on weekends and in our house garage. He told me to always to practice safety issues and be safe. Also to avoid working with mechanics who didn't. Feel free to blast away if you see a safety issue in my videos, I'm sure there's a few here and there. Hey Shawn another tip, these vans are notorious for having a bad Positive battery cable that goes to the starter rotting out. If you change the starter and it still starts hard or not at all. To check it, check the voltage at the battery and then on that post on the starter. If there is more than a 1 volt difference then you could have a rotted out cable. It happened to me and it the initial reason I changed the starter in the first place. Later when it wouldn't start at all even with a new starter, then we figured it out. They also have bad starter relays and solenoids occasionally. Thought I would mention that just in case you ran into that problem. Feel free to drop more questions if needed. Best Wishes n Blessings. • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  6 років тому

      Yep, because if there is a dual battery if you disconnect pos first and it comes into contact with the frame it an cause a short. However if you only have one battery it really doesn't matter. You are correct though, it is standard practice to disconnect the negative first. I do the pos on this van because it has been prone to corrosion, so while it's off I inspect and clean it. • @keithnoneya
      @keithnoneya  4 роки тому

      Because the van won't start. LOL, Indications were I had power at the Solenoid but not on the starter when the ignition switch was activated. The starter was old so rather than just replace the Solenoid I opted to change the whole starter with it. After changing the starter I still had a slow start but it started. Months later I also found a bad Positive Battery Cable. The cable had corrosion at the low point and was literally broke in two inside the jacket but touching. I diagnosed the bad cable by putting the meter lead on the battery and had someone turn the key and it remained at 11.5vdc, as expected. Then I put the meter lead on the starter terminal and the voltage dropped to 8.5vdc. That told me I had HIGH resistance in the battery cable, most likely corrosion. After changing the Positive Battery Cable and the Starter the van started regularly without hesitation. Thanks for watching Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

      Yes it is. That's what happens when American Politicians tax our companies so much that it's cheaper for them to move their headquarters overseas! President Trump & the Republican party are trying to fix this by lowering Corporate Taxes to bring those companies back home so we can employ Americans here rather than foreigners over there. Unfortunately the leadership in the Demoncratic Party is fighting that all the way, saying "It's tax breaks for the Rich" Uh yah it is, but they invest that money to expand or create new companies to make more money. That brings jobs to the poor, who need it most! There will always be rich people I don't care, what I care about is poor people having a job more than I care about some politician tricking you to vote for them using envy.
