This hit me really hard when I first heard it. My father was an alcoholic and I have had my own substance abuse issues that lasted well into my late 20s. It was only my girlfriend getting pregnant with my daughter that snapped me out of it. I'd seen how the kids of addicts get treated and I just could not do that to my own child. I don't care what you think about yourself and how good you would be in those circumstances, I can tell you wouldn't. When you wake up in withdrawal and you have a choice between buying food or whatever for your baby and a fix, the fix wins every time. You will rationalize it to yourself as - once I'm sorted out then I can work out how to get money for the baby. I knew that I would do the same so I had to make sure I was not an addict any more. Amazingly, I managed to get clean and I have never looked back. Well, I had a little relapse when she died - to try to dull the pain but there is not a drug in the world that can stop the pain of losing your child so I stopped before I started, if you get what I mean. The song is very raw in both intention and execution, and I could just imagine if it was, say, a lost recording by John Lennon, it would be given the praise it truly deserves. I would love to hear a proper production of it but that could risk losing the rawness which is part of the power of the track. I don't know. Can you dig out the name of that poet that Chester told you about. It wasn't Roger McGough, was it? He's an English poet who I think you would really like. Try "Let me Die a Young Man's Death" to get a flavour of his style. He goes much much deeper, too.
