My first time hearing this song was in high school albeit with a natural degree of naivety but it recently popped up in my mind as a almost distant memory but you’ve really hit the nail on the head for its continuing relevance. Raising children full of hate to fight an old man’s war…
Thank you for reacting to this song, and for the person who requested it. The tragedy of this is that this is from the 1990s, and it has only gotten worse. Tragic for people on all sides. I shed tears frequently for the hopelessness that has descended over the Levant. It is painful. Horror.
It is tragic and terrible. Hopelessness is indeed an accurate description of how many people feel when it comes to this conflict. Thanks for watching and i wish you a great day.
The 90’s wow, I got this 3 cd set with a mini-book thing that came with it, well the cds were stored in the sleeves of the book so the book was a little bigger that a cd. It’s was called Ballers, bawlers, and bastards. I got it the day of release because I had every other album and live rare concerts that I could get my hands on (internet not like today). I didn’t realize it was that long ago until I read your comment
I had never heard of this song or any songs by Tom Waits, but now I will have to go do some research. Thank you for bringing this powerful song to light for us. It is the reality that we all have to live with. Your insights are appreciated, and you are right: there is no acceptable level of collateral damage in war, since war is not an acceptable activity for humanity to pursue. We should be better than this by now. For a more hopeful look on the state of the world you might want to watch Home Free's video "What's the World Coming To?" written by Tim Foust and others. It's just good to remember that we can each do something in our own lives to try to make the world a better place for us all. Gail L.
Remember Tom has two careers from 1973 to 1984 he was piano blues jazz singer songwriter starting in 1984 he became more of an avant garde artist, this song is from the second half.
Here's another catalog that you could spend a month on. 🙂 His voice isn't everyone's cup of tea, but his songwriting talent is undeniable. I always liked his voice personally, but I had friends who would make me take it off when I put it on. My favorite album is "The Heart of Saturday Night". Or "Rain Dogs". Or... LOL
Tom's an absolute legend with every kind of song you can imagine. Some favorites among many: "House Where Nobody Lives" "Georgia Lee" "What's he Building in There".
This was definitely the hardest one to listen to ... It took me back to the times I've gone down the ' rabbit hole ' of Nova music fest / Israel videos on youtube ... The intensity of the video's sights and sounds place you the illusion that you are experiencing it yourself .. One video I DID see that was a BRIGHT LIGHT was a man ( with previous military experience ) who risked his life all day going to and from the site to pick up survivors while it was going on .. I think he saved circa 200 people in the end . Anyway after THIS reaction I went over to the ' across the universe ' reaction and cleansed my pallet 😛Thankful for that !
Definitely need some lighter music sometimes to offset the heavier stuff like this. At least strive for a bit of balance as far as its even possible. :)
Great reaction. Watching you bite your tongue is evidence of just how deep this conflict is. When even a very sensible man struggles to say a word, the matter is tense
Talk about relevance, this one hits home even now, as you stated while I was typing my comment🫣. Wow...what a song..what a message. Thank you, Saeed for reacting to this.❤😊 4:05
I'm new to your channel, so I recommended this song on another reaction without knowing that you'd already seen this. It's a tough song. The conflict seems so clear when you hear this, but, as you said, it's complicated, though the complications obscure true understanding. I highly recommend "Hell Broke Luce", also by Tom Waits. The song is a necessary gut punch, and a symphony of chaos. The video just enhances the impact. However. I'm full of other Waits recommendations if you want to get off the conflict oriented path you seem to have landed on.
Thanks for being here. Its a very complicated issue, but this song really talks about some great aspects and in a brutally honest way. And thats what we need. Thanks for watching and the recommendation!
The Wire is my favourite TV series ever. You should try some reactions to The Pogues which you would certainly recognize from The Wire. Body of an American is the most obvious, used to perfection in the scene of Cole’s wake. Perhaps the most brilliant five minutes of television ever, the Pogues song just heightens the emotions of the character’s demise and the real life death of Robert Colesberry. Jay Landsman’s devastatingly heartbreaking and funny eulogy (that delivery), is my favourite scene in the series. “He was called. He served. He is counted.” Sorry for the tangent, the Wire just inspires that devotion.
Oh i remember that scene and song. Must check revisit it at some point. I must have watched the entire series at least 5 times. I love love love that show! So no apologies needed for the tangent. I feel similar about this series 😄 I pretty much quote it daily 😅
Well I think this REACTION REQUEST IS COMING STRAIGHT FROM THE uNiVerse, it's helping u feed 2 birds w/ 1 seed.. cuz there's an amazing MASHUP ALBUM OF AESOP ROCK LYRICS MIXED w/ TOM WAITS & WOW!!!! it's in my top 2 fave aes mashups along w/ Aesop mixed w/ Portishead. BOTH ARE ELEVATIONS OF BOTH'S ART & b4 i heard the Waits mashup, None Shall Pass was in my bottom 3 aes albums!! sooo the uNiVerse would love to see u hear it any track. my faves are either ReeperLawn(Reeperbahn & Aes' Keep off the Lawn) or Pluto's Away on Business(Aes' Bring Back Pluto & Waits God's Away on Biz) just evolutionary mashup! SONG YOU REACTED 2, FUMES, IS ON THERE OVER WAIT'S ALL THE WORLD IS GREEN
@@SaeedReacts. it's soooOO perfectly done & the cat that made it altered the speed of aes sometimes but other than that he just stitched em together geniusly! it's called AESOP WAITS - Tom Shall Pass & the guy really makes aes' lyrics clear where ifeel his lyrics are not brought forward enough on some of his beats. i'm gonna go listen to it now!! great morning soundtrack to hump day! i'd never heard of Tom Waits til the mashup
Before hearing the reaction, anyone who don't like TW and Nick Cave can dig themself a hole and jump into it! :D No, not that drastic, but they are really great artists. :)

Thanks. It definitely is. Sometimes it feels like walking a minefield with a blindfold on.
Thank you for covering this song, covering Tom Waits. This song is so poignant and still important right now. The killing continues.

My favorite from Tom is his duet with Bette Midler called "I Never Talk to Strangers".

A lot of his music has been considered depressing. I find it just very deep.
Cass McCombs has a very similar style
The world can be at times. And songs will be written about it 😃
If you really wanna cry with Tom Waits, try Georgia Lee.
