  • In this video we examine an original WW2 German WIF SIGNAL Model 1136 military issue flashlight. This piece of field equipment was used by the Wehrmacht to navigate, signal, direct traffic and check documents at night. The hinged hood is typically referred to as a “blackout hood”, similar to the NOTEK light used on wartime vehicle fenders. The idea was to eliminate light signature to enemy aircraft.

As long as you don’t NEED it, you should be ok. Collecting WW2 field equipment is an excellent way to always be broke. 🤓😭

Lovely video! Without having any evidence, I theorize that the blue tinted slit is useful to keep the morse-functionality without shining too bright of a light. I can imagine the blue slit is still fairly well visible IF you know where the squad leader is sitting at, while keeping a relatively low profile.

That makes perfect sense, actually. Especially if other people are looking specifically for red or green lights to indicate a particular order in addition to “stop”, “go” etc. you need a different color to avoid confusion. Thanks for watching!

Wow! This flashlight is about 80 years old, but it is still advanced and this technology from the past looks great even today.
Are there other German lanterns that were carried in the hand, like a kerosene lamp?

I really haven’t had to depend on one day in day out for a year or so, but I would imagine the metal contacts would have to be tweaked. Most metal German wartime flashlights are stamped steel held together with rather dainty metal tabs bent over in slots. Not particularly robust by today’s standards.
