- Onboard Gopro video of a fast cornering ride on my motorbike. The video shows the Malojapass from Vicosoprano to Maloja (Switzerland), Google Maps: goo.gl/maps/K5AeR
Gopro Hero 2 and Zoom H1 are used to record video and sound, sound level is tuned with wavelab, the video is synchronized and edited with openshot. The Zoom H1 is located under the seat in front of the backlight, where normally the tool kit is stored. To prevent the Zoom H1 from bumping around, I wrapped some foam around it.
The motorcycle is a Suzuki GS 500, built in 2004, restricted to 25 kw / 34 hp. Michelin Pilot Street are used on the bike, the first radial tyres in these narrow dimensions.
Filmed on September 1st, 2013.
It usually has more cars on that street, but I waited for a gap between the cars and stopped between part 1 and 2 to be at the end of the gap (when driving like in the video, I'm usually much faster than an average car driver, especially in corners with such a big lean angle).
Before such a fast ride, I drive the route at least once before filming to improve the lines threw the corners and to learn about dangers like gravel on the street or construction zones.

I decided to choose the GS-500 as my next bike, five years ago, after watching this video. I guessed this bike had all I needed to upgrade from my previous 125cc. I was right! I'm so happy with my GS500F I don't think I'll change it. Why go to a faster beast if this one has everything I could ever need? :D
The same here. Why change. But mine is from 1993, with more hp. 52 vs 46. And yes they can actually beat a much more powerful mc. How to do that is in corners.

Nice riding area, and great scenery ! Do you use your turning signals for each curve, or is it a habit of turning them off. Wasn't sure if it's a rule or not ? You had a good lines, better than most. Thought it was a restricted bike, just didn't seem like the full power, depending on year -1gen 52 bho ,and 2 gen 47+ bhp. Would love to ride there someday. Stay safe. yl

That's why I have a few questions. I know how you recorded the sound, but that's not the stock exhaust I guess? So what exhaust do you have? I also have a gs500 but not the naked version (gs500f - 35kw/47HP)

It's the stock exhaust. The camera is mounted on my breastbone using the original gopro chest mount. It has to be mounted as high as possible to avoid filming just the fuel tank.

Yes, it is quite bad, but enough for a beginner. If you plan to keep it longer, a new front and rear suspension is a good investment, but I've never done that. As a result, I drive it without the centerstand to prevent unwanted ground contact. :-)
At the end of the season, I will probably order a new Street Triple R.

Rear suspension is a good investment but I think you can change a lil bit your fork without buying a brand new one... Change your springs and change the original 10w fork oil for a 15w or a 20w. :)
Are you paranoid about your indicators being on? Every few seconds you are pushing the cancel button!

It is in the English Harris frame with Brembo of Italy front brake. So much better than the Bullet series in the old frame.
Indian made Brembo rear brake, is in fact Very good.

The valve springs are worn out and can't keep up with the engine, so I'm doing a minor rebuild but am feeling the need to ride more than ever right now!

Yes, it is the stock exhaust. The only thing I invested into it is a steel brake hose at the front. For the next season, I'm going to get a new bike because my license restriction will be over in August. :-)
Nothing to do with the age of the bike, the GS500s are virtually identical year in and year out. Mine has over 30,000 miles on it, it needs some TLC.
You're right, they came out of the factory quite identical over the years. But with rising age and mileage, it needs some additional care as you already mentioned, which is not always worth the savings from buying it.

es ist herrlich mitanzusehen wie du mind alle 10 sekunden den blinker ausmachst obwohl du ihn nichtmal anhattest :D ich mach das zwar auch aber du machst es wirklich verdammt oft ^^ sonst schöner fahrstil

Sorry for the delayed response. The Zoom H1 is located under the passenger seat where the tool kit is normally located. To prevent it from bumping around, I wrapped some foam around it. It's still quite a windy place, so the sound quality is not the best possible.
My Suzuki GS 500 is now advertised for sale in Switzerland since I will get a brand-new Street Triple R in three weeks. :-)

Eine Frage hätte ich, weißt du zufällig den Namen des Lenkers? Habe noch den originalen Lenker dran, der mir persönlich nicht ganz so gefällt! =/

Das ist ziemlich sicher der originale Lenker! Er fährt ne GS500E Baujahr 2004. Du hast nehme ich mal an wie ich eine mit Stummellenker. (war glaube ich bis 2004 als das F Modell kam)
Mein Bruder hat auf seiner GS500f den gleichen Lenker wie hier im Video. Ich persönlich hab den Lenker beim Fahrschulmotorrad oder dem von meinem Bruder komischerweise immer recht weit außen angefasst, obwohl die schon deutlich breiter sind. Bei meiner GS komme ich aber gut zurecht und hab nicht das Bedürfnis einen breiten Lenker zu verbauen.
Wenn du jedenfalls nach einem suchst, such nach "Superbikelenker". Kostet aber mit Eintragung bestimmt 100-150€
was für einen Auspuff hast du an deiner gs montiert?
The GS500 sounds sick, and I love the corners and the video :D Thumbs up.
I do question about the gear changes though. I to own a GS500 and have learned the best way is to change as fast as possible without pulling the clutch all the way in (maybe half way in as far at the clutch level will go to the handlebar). Going up a gear I just back off the throttle slightly and the new gear matches. Going down a gear I simply keep the throttle open a little. I've had to learn to change gears like this because I double a passenger a lot, and I don't like a helmet slapping my helmet while riding :P
I fully pull the clutch. For upshifting, I pull it while closing the throttle and let it go after reopening it a bit so that the engine speed sinks and matches with the upper gear. For downshifting, I also pull the clutch while closing the throttle and I then reopen it to raise the engine speed. After that, I reduce the throttle to let the clutch go and fully reopen it to accelerate.
For the driving license, I took even more time for the shifts, but they were very smooth. With the new Street Triple R, I started to shift faster. A new video will come in spring, it nearly snowed today, so the season seems to be over.

Schöner Pass, muss ich auch mal befahren.
Geiles Motorrad, habe selber die Suzuki GS 500 E (aber meine ist 22-Jährig). Ich bin noch ein Motorrad-Anfänger und wäre froh wenn du mir ein paar Tipps geben könntest und mir folgende Frage beantwortest: Bei Wie viel Umdrehungen ungefähr soll man hochschalten (Meine fährt schon bei 3500 Umdrehungen Ruckelfrei, aber habe im Video gesehen, dass du viel höhere Umdrehungen fährst, Was ist besser?).
-Weiterhin gute Fahrt!
Ab 2500 Umdrehungen pro Minute konnte meine mit wenig Gas ruckelfrei gefahren werden, ab 3000 mit Vollgas. Um zügig zu beschleunigen, drehte ich sie natürlich höher, um die maximale Leistung abzurufen. Über 10000 habe ich sie allerdings nie gedreht, bergauf oder auf kurvigen Landstrassen meist zwischen 6000 und 9000. Die Leistung ist über andere Vergaserdüsen auf 25 kw (34 PS) begrenzt, somit drehte ich sie schon alleine deshalb höher, sobald ich Leistung abrufen wollte. Der Verbrauch lag im Durchschnitt bei 4.5 Litern pro 100 km, bei konstantem Tempo oder innerorts fuhr ich meist sehr tieftourig.

Ich drücke etwas nervös auf dem Blinkerknopf rum. Da mein Motorrad keine automatische Blinkerrückstellung hat, falls man es vergisst, habe ich irgendwie damit angefangen. Mittlerweile habe ich mir das aber wieder abgewöhnt, bei zukünftigen Videos sollte das also nicht mehr stören. :-)
Sehr schön! Bei vielen anderen H1 Aufnahmen gibt's Knack-Geräusche. Auf wieviel hast du dein rec. level stehen? Und habe ich das richtig verstanden, dass der Zoom mit dem Mikro entgegen die Fahrtrichtung guckt? Grüße aus nrw!
Der Zoom H1 ist auf WAVE 48kHz 24bit eingestellt und liegt quer im Werkzeugfach unter dem Sitz. Dabei ist das Mic nach links gerichtet und mit dem schwarzen Schaumstoff (Zubehör) überzogen, den Zoom selber habe ich mit 20 mm dicken Schaumstoffstreifen eingewickelt, sodass er leicht unter dem Sitz eingeklemmt wird. Der Pegel ist auf 12 dB eingestellt, was allerdings ziemlich leise ist, mit Wavelab (war beim Zoom dabei) habe ich ihn auf circa -1 dB peak angehoben.
Danke für die die ausführliche Antwort! Klingt nach nem guten Workflow. Auf -1db normalisieren ist auf jeden Fall ne gute Sache. Freue mich schon darauf im Sommer zu experimentieren, wie sich Motorradsound in der Postproduktion so verhält. Grüße
What are you doing with the signal switch? You're constantly putting your thumb over it or something in the same area and I was just wondering why.
It's just a strange habit I wasn't aware of and which I gave up. Now I sometimes realize that I forgot to switch off the turn signal and therefore
drove with the turn signal on for a longer distance. :-)
Being a student rider I must say I just love this idea, and will definitely try to do the same for the remainder of my training. Strange as it might look, it's much better than forgetting to turn the signal off - especially at the exam I'm about to take :)

Yes, I do counter steer. This basically only means that you initiate leaning in with your handlebar.

You seem to be doing STEEP turns.
I usually try to lean with the motorcycle. The camera is mounted on my chest, so it leans as much as my body does. Sometimes I try to hang off a bit, like I tried at 2:43, even though I'm probably doing it wrong. :-)
But the advanced lean angle is desired.

Hallo, erstmal ein schönes Video, doch wollt ich mal fragen ob die Zuzuki gs 500 ein gutes Motorrad ist ? Gab es Probleme, wenn ja was ? würde mich sehr über Antwort freuen. GG
ist ein gutes und auch zuverlässiges Moped. Leistung reicht auch aus, fürn Anfang alle mal. Probleme sind meist nur Öl am Motorblock, rasselnder Steuerkettenspanner, für manche zu weiches Fahrwerk. Komme auf max. verbrauch von 4,5l egal welche fahrweise, und sportlich kann man mit ihr auch fahren, dumme blicke von Sportlerfahrern inbegriffen :D
Jap, mit ner GS kann man schon mal große Bikes aus kurvigen Strecken vernaschen.
Bekanntes Problem wäre vielleicht noch der Benzinhahn, und ansonsten lebt die GS eigentlich ewig, solange sie genug Öl hat. :D
Und das beste, man kann an der guten alten GS quasi alles selber reparieren, ohne großes Vorwissen.
Verbrauch liegt bei mir allerdings meist bei 6 Litern, ich habe aber auch einen sehr aggressiven Fahrstil... :D
Wenn ich etwas gemütlicher lange Autobahnstrecken fahre, dann komme ich auch so auf 4,5.

I ride a 750 cruiser now but I was considering the gs500e. Would I be disappointed in the power loss, in your opinion? Thanks.
My GS 500 is restricted to 34 hp instead of 47 hp and I've never ridden the unrestricted version. But I suppose you would be disappointed because I have to rev it quite high if I want some power and overtaking is sometimes a bit an issue, especially uphill.
A college of mine who owned an unrestricted one told me the only noticeable difference is at the top end, so it stays quite weak at the low end.
On the other hand, the possible lean angle is not too bad. Before the GS 500, I also drove a cruiser (VT 125 C Shadow). The biggest advance of the GS 500 wasn't the additional power but the additional possible lean angle, the footpegs of the Shadow scratched on the ground very often.

I wouldn't fixate too much on the GS 500, you could also look for a XJ6, a NC 700, a FZ6, a Gladius, a Street Triple or something similar (I don't know if they are in your budget).

I enjoyed the video.. :), but I wonder why so many people don't seenm to rev match their down shift gear changes these days? They just seem the clunk their way down through the gears....
I don't know the answer, I also wonder a bit considering that only a few motorcycles have a slipper clutch.

Moto GP bikes have auto blippers so the rider doesn't have to think about it anymore..:)

thinking of buying one. any problems with it so far??
The only issue I've had so far (2 years / 11'000 km) were dirty carburetors so it only run on one cylinder during idle. I expanded the official service intervals (6'000 km) a bit so I only let the valve clearance get adjusted once.
There's not much to fail, but everything is quite basic. For a beginner, it's a good bike, apart from the missing ABS. If you're a more experienced rider, you'll probably desire a better suspension, better brakes and more power.

Danke für den Kommentar. Fast riding bedeutet für mich eben schnelles Kurvenfahren, auf den Geraden übermässig schnell zu fahren kann jeder und gefährdet nur den Führerausweis. Zwei weitere Jahre mit 25 kw sind schliesslich nicht erwünscht (Ausweisentzug = die zweijährige Wartefrist beginnt danach wieder neu). :-)

Was hätst du von der GS500 als erstes Moped? Wollte im Frühjahr endlich mal meinen Motorradschein machen (fahr schon einige Jahre Auto), und hab ein Auge auf dieses Motorrad geworfen.
Das ist das beste A2-Moped, was du dir holen kannst.
Alles andere was es als Alternative gibt ist langsam, hässlich, oder zu teuer für nen A2-Schein.
Mit nem billigen Bike anfangen macht mehr Sinn als nen tolles drosseln, denn wenn du dich mal lang legst, dann ist das der GS egal. Da kannst du nen Totalschaden für 300€ wieder reparieren. ^^
Ex4mp1e Danke für's Feedback. Mache gleich die volle A und nicht die A2, aber wollte als erstes Moped nichts haben was gleich overkill ist. Sowohl Preislich als auch von der Leistung. Ich denke ca. 50PS wird mehr als genug sein für Landstraße und co aber nicht unbedingt gleich überfordern als Anfänger.
