Today is an exciting day as we revisit the Gloomhaven universe together for the fourth time on the channel! The latest entry is called Jaws of the Lion, a brand new streamlined campaign for retail release! Target releases June 21 and hobby distribution begins in August. In this video we'll get to the gameplay and show you Scenario #1. One of five scenarios from the Learn to Play guide which knocks down the barrier of entry by teaching you Gloomhaven progressively over the first five scenarios. Enjoy! ;D Check out the Forteller App for complete professional voice narration for Jaws of the Lion here: bit.ly/rollingsolo_jawsofthelion FYI: 29:09 Only walls break line of sight. No gameplay impact. The Strength Condition on the Demolitionist should have lasted until the end of it's next turn.
Received this game today, thanks to your unboxing and playthrough. This looks like to be so much fun!!! Even bought the Audio narration for total immersion.
You’re going to have a good time. Jaws is well done and also the best way to learn Gloomhaven hands down. The on-boarding experience is amazing in this one.
I think 2023 is the year I finally dive into the Gloomhaven world with Jaws of the Lion. I'm torn between starting solo sooner or waiting until a friend and I finish Pandemic Legacy Season 1 and then seeing if she wants to join me for Jaws. Hmmm.... Anyway, I really appreciate the clarity and pacing of your videos. So helpful!
I know this was just done for demonstration, but it's funny bc most of the time this scenario can easily be done without taking any damage. Great playthrough!
Nice play! Tactics note: as a Hatchet player, you should have moved one more space north before the disorienting barrage. You can throw over the obstacle and there would be no disadvantage.
Yeah, obstacles do not block line of sight, so for that matter, Adam did not need to worry about it for his character's disorienting barrage, either. (Unless there's something on the card itself that says otherwise.)
This has got me very excited Adam! I’ve watched your Gloomhaven showcase before, and I knew the game would overwhelm me. Now here is something I can understand: this is my absolute preferred way of learning; not just board games, but anything new. Following something step-by-step like this is totally my thing. It is also released around my birthday! Cheers!
Rolling Solo thanks Adam, but birthday not until September, but from what I see that is the release date in the UK, although some are saying August. I’ve dropped a subtle hint to my wife by emailing her a direct link to a preorder page!
This was a really good concise to the point walk through.. just searched for scenario 2 but couldn't find one, pity... really good job in explaining the game as you go.
Thanks my friend! I would have loved to continue but I had other games I had to get too. I love the Gloomhaven universe. It’s well done and a lot of fun. Frosthaven arrived and man is it massive.
@@RollingSolo Yeah fair enough. I noticed in my research Frosthaven was recently released, looking forward to getting to it one day.. just gotta finish Jaws of Lion first (now up to ep6).. then we will pick up Gloomhaven..then Frosthaven. First time playing this style of RPG/story type game... absolutely loving the experience so far.
Hey Kenneth! Thanks for watching. :) We shall see as I don’t want to introduce to many spoilers in this one. Even though the first one is safe as the five go along and your learn the rules, the campaign begins to open up. I think I will probably leave it at this point for people to enjoy on their own. It’s worth it!
just a suggested edit...around 29:25 you mention the obstacle blocking your shot to the raider in the top right. but according to the rulebook, obstacles do not actually block line of sight for ranged attacks.
I mean.. I’m hyped for Frosthaven offcourse, but at this point, I think Jaws of the Lion got my attention even more, weirdly enough. The way the tiles are in the book enable a lot of variety and the tiles all looks very themactic. Seems to work really smooth as well.
I love that the scenarios are built into the book. The setup and tear down time just floats away. 😄👍🏼 Still excited for Frosthaven though for that big time campaign feel.
With advantage v disadvantage, in the rule books it says for an advantage you draw two modifiers, pick the better of the two, and for disadvantage you draw two modifiers and pick the worst of the two. The missus and I played through about 3 scenarios before we actually noticed that.
Nice Playthrough! I'll try it in TTS with some friends now. Here some corrections to the rules: Single players usually increase monster level +1 Obstacles do not obstruct the line of sight, only movement
Thanks for watching and the feedback too. Yep, the monster level was up one for this playthrough. Obstacles I believe is in the pinned comment. Cheers!
Ah! I also decided to roll with the Hatchet, although my wife elected Voidwarden. Definitely with you, that this is a much better intro with throwing as you put it "not so many overwhelming rules up front" I'll likely be trying to introduce the lads I weren't able to sway with initially with this box. :)
A good video - thanks for sharing. I especially appreciate the camera work: you make an effort to frame the components clearly and up-close, so that the text can be read. It's amazing how few game play videos clear that hurdle.
I do my best to ensure the viewer can actually see and understand what’s being done during gameplay. Nothing worse than a disconnected playthrough. Happy to help :D
I've done this as well. I seem to bounce around on this when filming though. I like them near the standees better overall as well so it's harder to miss something. Cheers!
This game would have been great before the big box sets. Having Gloomhaven and having backed Frosthaven on kickstarter Jaws of the lion would have been a fantastic game to get your feet wet before plunging into the big boxes, and the boxes are deep!
Was never sold on the original but I like this streamlined version. It would also be a lot cheaper. If I ever change my mind I’d go for this, not the massive 100hr version.
Huh. Man, I had no idea this was a thing! I hope I can get my hands on it soon! I still haven't gotten my copy of Gloomhaven yet (it got delayed 30 minutes away from me 😒), so constantly refreshing my tentative grip on the rules is bound to help when it does finally arrive.
@@RollingSolo I saw that in your description, but I think I read it and then immediately lost it. 😅 If I'm able, I'll go search the Target closest to me. They got hit by the recent riots, so it's questionable at best, but worth a look!
haha All good. I heard they were holding back stock from being scanned and purchased until June 21. So nows the time to check or call at least. Good luck :)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the strengthen effect should have lasted one more turn on the demolitionist! It wouldn't fade at the end of the turn he got it on, rather at the end of the NEXT turn
Andrew has it right. The card specifically says to gain advantage until the end of your next turn. Not the end of your current turn. You should have the advantage for one more attack.
@@2HeadedNinja both positive and negative status effects are removed at the end of a turn that they were on you at the start of the turn. so if you negative effect your self on your turn it also lasts till the end of your next turn... move 7 immobilize self for the win lol
@@zebzickler306 yeah that's true. But the strengthen in the video still was played wrong I think. If I start my turn and my card is "Move X, Strengthen self" The strengthen wasn't on me on the start of the turn and will last for this turn and the next one. If I strengthen a character with a lower initiative than me he/she starts with the strengthen hence will remove it at the end of their turn. The potential 2 turn bonus on strengthen or invisibility really only comes into play if you cast it on yourself.
@@RollingSolo Debuffs generally only hit once, but buffs often hit twice - the turn you play them (or at least what's left of that turn) and your next turn (buffing allies only affects them once). There are also situations where a debuff hits twice because you choose to move into/through a trap or have a powerful ability that comes with a debuff on yourself. It didn't make a difference to the outcome since keeping the strengthen for turn 3 would have meant killing the vermling with the first attack and then doing nothing with the bottom of the other card.
Hey Eric! Happy to help you out. 😄 Glad you like the format and hope it knocks down the barrier to entry. Watch It Played is run by my uncle! We both share a similar love of games in general. 😄👍🏼
The strengthen condition was placed on the demolitionist on itself during its turn. A condition like that is discarded at the end of its next turn, not current turn. I believe you could have benefited from it on another turn :o
Appreciate it my friend! I usually make the slip and during editing notice it. It’s fun to o see who spots what sometimes. None of us are perfect, including me ;p
The rules say conditions remain on a target until the end of the target's next full turn, which could be the same round or the subsequent round depending on whether or not the target had already taken a turn in the current round. I read that as intending to mean a condition affects a character once and only once.
This helped me a lot my first run through I lost and I was like damn I know this first level can’t be this hard I was using the monster ability cards for every enemie attack and I had the vermlins set to lvl 5 so basic had 15 health and elite had like 23 or so nonetheless after watching this video I went back and clean there faces on the board now that I understood the rules thanks a lot I was also running solo! Cheers 🤟🏽
i’ve stayed out of the gloomhaven world as it’s so big and i’ve only got room for one massive campaign in my life (arkham lcg for me!) but this looks like the perfect entry point for someone like me. i think “undertow” is to “too many bones” as “jaws of the lion” is to “gloomhaven” would you agree having played it?
Great Intro, I loved the Imperial Assault app in game tutorial and felt it was big miss in gloomhaven. I wonder if this strategy will go foward in Frosthaven.
At 31:20 you remove the strengthen condition from the Demolitionist, but I think you shouldn't. The Demolitionist gained that condition in the middle of his (second) turn, and all conditions are remove at the end of the next turn (third), so he should have it for half a turn (the one he gained it, the second) and a complete turn after that (the third). Isn't that so?
Hey Gabriel! I mentioned this in the pinned comment. Thanks for watching and good catch. It appear this change in this version initially but after double checking it as the same as previous verisons.
Aside from this video, I know nothing about the game. I do own it, however, still sealed. Would you recommend 1 or 2 players? I think 2 may be more fun since you don’t know your partner’s cards. Thanks.
Yes! I fully recommend this at either player count. You can play solo and control as many characters as you feel comfortable with. The cool thing with soloing is the synergies you can pull off between characters. It opens up some cool combos!
As always, awesome playthrough and interesting game. Btw, just want to ask how do you guys do your recording, any tips you can share for someone who would like to try the same thing like me? Also, any starting or basics equipment/tools need in a more beginner and budget-friendly(e.g. cam/phone, stand, lights, mic)? Just like how you guys start off :)
I started off with a digital camera that could record video. One take with no editing and just the passion to show solo games to people. That's all you need. You can get started with a phone no problem! You don't need to go all in until you understand the amount of hours, nights and days it will take you to produce videos. The more flash, adds more time! Be sure you enjoy the roots of the process first.
@@RollingSolo Noted. I was thinking of the same thing on how you started, so yeah, maybe I'll stick to it. Btw, I noticed that during your playthrough that when you move to a certain area, the video move as well, do you somehow wear your cam? My plan was just to do one side recording, which will be topview, my problem will be how to cover the whole board and maybe audio as well.
Nope, not easily. Once used they're on there. However, you could either just take note of the places you unlocked or laminate the sticker sheet, cut out and use sticky tac.
Gloomhaven is too expensive for me, especially considering I would be playing it solo or begging others to join me :D It's not completely off the table, but maybe I will have more luck convincing people to jump in with JotL. I'll try to get it as soon as it becomes available in EU. I did play a few scenarios of GH and I really liked it. Maybe if everything goes well and my group ends up liking this I could convince them to donate a little bit of $$$ so that we could get GH proper :D
JotL is the perfect entry point and the beginning of the story to the larger games. Once everyone plays JotL they will be much more open to a longer game of Gloomhaven with the rules nailed down. It’ll flow much much better. Just remember that JotL is not a watered down version. It’s the same rules as the huge box but a much better learning experience over the first five scenarios. Plus there is no repeat content. It’s all a prequel to Gloomhaven.
@@RollingSolo I'm very much looking forward to it! The only issue now is waiting! It's not released in the EU for another month or two or three or who knows (some say August, some say October...), but I did find a store which will be carrying it so yaaay!
Same here in Canada too. I have an early copy so I like to share that with everyone by doing some videos to help people in their decision. Canada will also be waiting until Aug-Sept. Awesome to hear you found a spot to grab it! 😄👍🏼
Heya! Nice video. I'm super excited for Jaws of the Lion, too bad it's sold out! Small rules nitpick, at 22:50 you describe Line of Sight as drawing a line from one corner of the hex to one corner of the other hex. This is how LoS was performed in original Gloomhaven, but my understanding is that for JotL it's been changed to drawing a line from any part of the attackers hex to any part of the target's hex, not just corners anymore. This avoids some very odd corner (no pun intended) cases in Gloomhaven where you didn't have LoS even though it looked like you really, really should. Since you actually have a copy of the rulebook, is that change true?
They really like castle panic. That’s about the most complicated game they’ve played. Our collection is not that big unfortunately. We’ve played games like fireball island, forbidden island and dungeon! which they love. I’ve never played a game like Gloomhaven either and I really like how they slowly introduce the mechanics.

My plan was just to do one side recording, which will be topview, my problem will be how to cover the whole board and maybe audio as well.
Cant wait to get this. Question - are those stickers removable? Im a bit dreaded by the "permanently used up" part of Gloomhaven.
Yep! It’s been since simplified. Tough to change my mind after playing the same way for so long. Cheers!
So im lost is it a change in lion that obstacles brake line of site? in gloomhaven they do not. seems like a fairly major rule change.
at 29:09 he says the obstacles blocks line of sight for range attack, I was also startled to hear that : maybe a mistake from his side ?
I think it was just a slip-up.
Obstacles don't break line of sight. Just walls.
Hey All, It’s indeed just walls. A slip of the tongue. I mentioned this in the pinned comment now. Cheers!
Do you think a 10 year old can handle this? I really really want this but I only have my kids to play with. 10 and 13 years old.
Hey Jared! That depends on what they’re used to most likely. What do they enjoy?
They really like castle panic. That’s about the most complicated game they’ve played. Our collection is not that big unfortunately. We’ve played games like fireball island, forbidden island and dungeon! which they love. I’ve never played a game like Gloomhaven either and I really like how they slowly introduce the mechanics.
I’d say go for it. It’s never been a better time to try a Gloomhaven game.
Gg, I'm on twitch as KHALFANi ... keep it up
Thanks my friend!
