The instinctual desire to hug/pet a cute thing until it's hurt, likely comes from the fact that humans have been a hunting species for some time. Like how dogs enjoy squeaky toys because it sounds like a small animal crying in pain.
we actually have a word for the cute aggression thing in my language, “gigil”. It’s pretty broad in its use but it mostly boils down to wanting to squish something or someone. It could be applied to being so frustrated or angry at someone that it’s “nakaka-gigil” or that something is so perfect that it’s “nakaka-gigil. But it mostly applies to the whole cute aggression thing. i.e., “That dog is so cute that I want to ‘gigil’ it.”
