I have been backpacking with the same group of buddies for 40 years. Your friendship reminds me of our group. Happy trails. Looking forward to following along.
The planes are doing practice runs preparing for the fire season. The lead plane come in after getting instructions on where the drop should be, let out a puff of smoke, then the second plane comes in and drops, usually phos-check. The C130 is probably new to the fleet. I know that cal fire had received some in.
For anyone interested, the best way to prevent codger groans is to build core strength and joint (especially leg and hip) flexibility. Practice unloaded squats - as low as you can safely go - for the ankles, knees and hips. Planks and/or birddogs, side planks, and maybe some mini crunches, should help with your core. My credentials: I'm a fellow codger who's been teaching yoga and fitness for over 30 years. Happy trails.
Your advice is good confirmation for me! I've been doing all of the exercises that you mentioned for about 3 months now and it has made a world of difference so far, my goal being able to hike better in the Eastern Sierra this summer. I'm nearly a decade older than these codgers and I just retired after sitting at a desk in an air conditioned office for the last 45 years. But I never in my life thought I could do squats, but I can now as I continue to loosen my knees and ankles. I can go 3/4's of the way down, but I want to get all the way down and be able to hold it. I gotta work harder on the planks, they're still hard for me. Nevertheless, even the young people that hike the PCT say that, even when they're halfway or more, unfortunately the uphill doesn't necessarily get easier, but it does get more doable.
Loving your videos. Keep hiking Codgers! I am fairly certain that those planes were Cal Fire practicing retardant drops for the upcoming fire season. Those pilots are usually spot on with their water and retardant drops. It's quite amazing.
My friends son just graduated CalBaptist with a degree in Aviation. He got his first pilots job working for a company in Mohave, CA flying aircraft that follow commercial drones. Mohave is within eyesight of where the codgers were hiking when they spotted the aircraft, but since the C30 was following a twin engine aircraft, not a drone, then your explanation is probably closer to the truth. But Edwards AFB is also right in that vicinity, about 30-40 miles NE of where they were hiking, as the crow flies.
23 mile day and 500 mile marker! Congrats! You guys might groan when you get up, but hiking 500 miles is no small task. Joe rode his hiking pole horse! Giddyup! Hope John's foot will be okay. Our snow here in most of Wisconsin is gone, except for far northern WI where they got a foot the other day. It's always good to see one of your videos pop up so we can all see what the codgers are up to. Safe hiking!
John wise to get off trail and tend to his feet and rest up a bit .it’s a long way to Canada! I was watching someone else’s video compilation of their pct hike and they were over 60. I think the man said he went through 11 pairs of shoes . So that is almost every couple of weeks he was in a new pair. Expensive but worth it. I work on my feet for 10 hrs a day 5 days a week for over 30 yrs. I was changing my shoes every6 months and now I’m down to every 3 months. So whatever it takes to keep those feet happy!
Loving your humor and attitude...I hope to meet you when you make it to WA. I TA between Seattle and Snoqualmie Pass on I90 and as needed between Seattle and Mazama. Safe travels!
Been following you on your travels along the PCT. That 5,000 feet of ascending and the 22 miles of travel; impressive. I'm 71 and my present focus is winter solo travel on the CDT, my dog and I, that is. I'd love to get your ages. Bending over without a groan indeed!
Looks like training for new fire air crews. There's an fire air base at Fox Field a few miles east of Hikertown. I like the ice axe tent tie-down support.
Congratulations on the 500 miles. I'm a little bit worried about your next routes, in this year it had too much snow in the Sierra. Be careful when you cross the snowed region & the river.
That is a tough section and probably one of my least favorite areas that I hikes so far especially once reaching the burn areas. Although the views were great. Thanks for the video!
That’s fire fighting behavior. The small plane drops a little white marker - powder? - and that guides the bigger plane to drop fire suppression powder/ liquid (usually red)? Seen it too often recently, unfortunately
Been following you since day one. Very entertaining. I sectioned hiked the trail over 15 years. Interesting to see the changes. Both the Saufley's in Agua Dolce and the Anderson's in Green Valley are no longer hosting. You missed some good people.
the twin engine puts out a trail of smoke to let the air tanker where to drop the retardant. they might have been getting the aircraft carded to fly fires. may be training also to drop fire retardant without dropping any
I love the horsey dance around. And the 5000’ elevation gain. Omg. With torn miniscus/ bone on bone… I do a lot of 😢moaning and groaning. Not to mention the bitching because I can’t hike at all. But, I’m kinda getting a fix by watching you guys . Be safe. Happy trails . No snakes yet?
You guys give me hope, approaching codger age this year, assuming 60 gets you into the club? Looking at 2024 or 25 for my journey. Thank you for sharing, thank you to who ever is uploading your vids on such a regular basis, if it is you, tell me how. :)
The codgers upload to google drive, I download and edit and upload on youtube. Same process we used in 2021 for the AT. I use videopad, it's not free, but does what I need. I'm not a pro, learning new stuff about editing regularly. ...ms rumbles
Wondering if the planes are doing what many have said regarding training OR are they dropping reclamation materials on previously burned areas, like a hydro seed mix. ?
There are military bases out that way but those plans look like ones deployed to release the pink phos check to put out the forest fires. I’d assume those were training runs. There is an airport for those kind of planes out there that is basically an air force base. I’ve been out that way when the fighter jet pilots were doing their training runs a as no they’d do their little maneuvers over our heads that I assume were to give us a thrill. lol. Congrats on 500 miles. I’m hoping that since it’s still kinda chilly that your trek over he aqueduct is fairly bearable and not blazing hot cuz tho you are hiking over pipes of drinking water there is no available water to drink. Oh the irony. So if it’s cooler you won’t have to carry as much water. You shouldn’t hit any snow until the mountains above ridgecrest and tehachapi and hopefully he snow up there should be fairly melted. There is always snow this time of year going up past wrightwood tho never on highway 2 like you had. But on the trail for sure. Even on low snow years like last year.
Congrats on 500! I've got that song, plus The Who's "I can see for miles" stuck in my head, all mashed together! This should be fun! 😅🤪😉 I think the planes were dumping mind control chemicals. At least, that's what my father, and the shape shifting aliens would say 😁
29 days for 300 miles is about 10 miles per day. 12 days for 200 miles is nearing 18 miles per day. You guys are speeding up a lot. Many on the JMT tend to average about 11 to 15 miles per day. PCT hikers travel more each day than the JMT people. The record time for the JMT is just over 4 days. What did they see nearly running about 50 miles each day? The PCT people I have met up in the sierras and Mammoth Lakes seem to be averaging near and over 20 miles per day. @@hikingwiththecodgers4086 no problem. Nice to see you are at where I have previously hiked and posted 18 videos on my UA-cam channel….for codgers knocking down 20s is impressive. What I am most impressed about is your smarts in mileage going out easy building your trail legs to avoid injuries Btw Many times that cistern gets animals crawling in and dying. Not exactly a reliable water source. It’s a long way off but when you get to echo lake or donner summitt I may be able to provide some trail Angel assistance. Froggy out

The C130s are on contract from the government for fire season. In the next couple years the state will put their own C130s into operation.
I can make it rain anywhere, anytime. California approached me for fire season, but didn't want to pay my asking price.
No filter, your sister’s music is wonderful. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Absolute legends, all of you. You inspire me for my next adventures. Love the vids.
That's a day for sure, over 20 miles and nearly 5,000 feet of ascent. Thanks for continuing to entertain all of us sitting on the couch at home.
I’m on trail 🤓 but on my air pad
True. It's the equivalent of hiking half dome from the valley floor and back.

Printing fire drops
Thank you
Was a codger on the trail last year (59) used the pick up sticks move many times..
You guys are rockin your hike.....20 plus mile days with a lot of uphill! 😊
Those planes are doing wildfire training. The spotter plane drops a signal for the tanker to drop its load of retardant!

The Codgers are down to just three amigos.
It looks like the codger cough is an after dinner thing. Maybe a mild food allergy.
Yes, I’ve been concerned about that cough for 500 miles now.. and sniffles too . Could be allergies. Maybe see an ENT person when you’re finished.
Slurry bomber training. The little plane spots for the big plane. My fathers company built the bigger slurry bombers

Wait until you get to Glacier Peak in WA. You’ll see F-16’s and F-22’s flying in the valleys and over the peaks.
They’ll likely get that in the Sierra’s too. Seen it at least a dozen times.
