I think he's being very realistic about how the American political system works and how this problem is not easily fixed by just replacing Biden. This really could lead to a constitutional crisis and the Democratic Party is likely terrified of how it would look in the eyes of the public if they did that.
The problem with Harris being the nominee is that it would be the Dems throwing out yet another candidate that is deeply unpopular and not liked, even within the party. It just feeds into the party's recurring choice to not care about what the people think about the person they run in favor of the in house establishment.
Trump is going to be re elected no matter which way this goes unfortunately. The Dems have absolutely nobody and even if they did have somebody waiting in the wings they don’t have enough time to gain any traction. Yes this includes Gavin Newsom. Democrats and left wingers highly overestimate Newsom’s popularity. California has a nationwide reputation for being poorly ran and Republicans would be able to hammer Newsom on a number of issues effectively. Not good for Dems at all…
I'd like to refine this comment by saying it would be presenting a candidate even LESS appealing than Joe Biden. For better or worse, a plurality did vote for him in the primary, where as Kamala Harris was among the first we dismissed from the stage. Picking her as VP was a move a lot of us saw as Biden's very first mistake. Replacing Biden's candidacy with Harris' is basically handing the election over to Republicans.
I like how Biden pivoted from abortion to how illegal immigrants were raping and murdering 13 year old American girls. There is tragedy for you. I guess he thought Trump needed a little help .

Biden pivoted from abortion to immigration because they are both under the 'YOUNG WOMAN' category in his head. Which tells you that this is the way he probably tried to mentally compensate for his perceived dwindling ability to serve an entire narrative or theme for 90 minutes, and so he labeled stories this way. Mixing up between them is problematic in much more ways than just the mix up. If you go to your best friend's wedding wearing a t-shirt and jeans and you end up proposing to his wife, the problem isn't with your dress code. He simply no longer has the capacity to govern, much less get to election day, much much less govern beyond that if he wins. The Democrats know that and they've kicked the can down the road for so long because they didn't want to confront the issue. And so the issue is now confronting them and you still have voices saying four more years and whatnot. The Democrats have a historic opportunity to move onto a new leadership, and this time they have nothing to lose because the other option is Biden drooling. And no matter how determined he is, biology has say, and we're having this conversation because we saw that biology has say. Senior Democrats have to act right now, or they will lose their young base forever, and it will take many decades of Republican rule before either the Democrats come back or a third party has sufficiently emerged.
If the dems cared so much about democracy why didnt they have a competitive primary? If this is such an existential fight dont we deserve a bad ass champion?
Because it’s never been about democracy. If it was about clinging to liberal ideas the Dems would never be on the wrong side of the censorship and endless war. The 2016 election perhaps it was legitimate to talk about democracy being at stake. There is zero evidence that Trump would govern as a lunatic. His words are lunatic, he didn’t actually bring us to the edge of war. If anything we are closer now. Doesn’t mean having him in office is good. But democracy is not at stake. I don't think anyone here disagrees with that assessment. I just think they're trying to rationally visualize how Biden could be replaced and what would happen. This has never been done before and it could very well lead to a disaster for the Democratic Party, maybe even worse than Trump being elected again.

Being "natively sceptical" of a uniform position is an incredibly poor basis for such an important decision. People are in uniformity because of what they see with their eyes. Whatever the downside risk of change is, there's no pathway to victory with Biden. It's preposterous to suggest staying with him. The rest of the world is watching this slow train derail.
Also on Bouie's point re:Harris: With a President whose public profile has been so low, she has thus far failed to actually show up. She never gained any popularity or assumed any kind of leadership because she sought and exercised none, and so when the assumption skips her, it is because no one really knows what she is about, and boy is that on her. I am not a big fan of how the black element was introduced into this, but let's be very clear on the fact that she's the female version of Tim Caine and Mike Pence combined.
Her terribleness has been going on for a while. Back when she was a DA she used to have to regularly get rid of or pawn off her entire floor of staff to someone else periodically, because she was so toxic to work for. That's how she escaped the repercussions. She didn't outgrow it, because her VP WH staff in her office when she started, all thrilled about working for the first black woman vice president as anyone would be - so would overlook a lot of toxic employer behavior towards themselves to make it work, as they would be of the thinking that their discomfort mattered far less than the mission - anonymously began to complain about her being a terrible boss to work for, they were so disheartened. Like imagine how bad it must have been for them to say things in public to the journalists at all, even anonymously. She is also I'm sure still the same person who was literally going around with cops arresting single, poor, working mothers if their kid was truant, just one of her wildly unpopular things. Another stellar decision of hers that got backlash was how while she was a prosecutor, and it was proven to all the lawyers and judge satisfaction that a certain man was falsely accused, but she still kept trying to have him on the hook for it before they made her drop it. Probably effected her case success rate negatively or something, so what did his technical innocence matter. The guy who runs one of those Project Innocence type legal programs said publicly, at the time Biden was getting his team together, that he hoped he won that election and he'd vote for him, but he wanted him to to pick anyone but her for just that reason specifically. She barely made it to the VP short list for these kinds of things, but they shouldered on and just got Wikipedia to temporarily alter her profile at the time, because America's pathetic election shallowness makes it to where the first woman candidates for VP or P have to be polled as attractive by the majority of people (so someone sensible like Stacy Abrams was unfairly out, when she's not even ugly or anything. But she wasn't conventionally attractive, so instead we picked Kruella DeVille Harris instead). I'm sure her disappearing act here as VP was specifically because every time she spoke as VP she's gotten crap, so they told her to be as invisible as possible, I'd imagine, because I doubt it was just her own idea to be in he background. She's not really a shrinking violet. I'd vote for her if she was the nominee to hold off Trump, but I can't help but think we're toast if it's her. And it's not because of conservatives' feelings about her; their backlash would be for any left-leaning candidate, so there's a certain amount of oh well about that, even with her scandals being juicier. No, all this backlash I'm mentioning was from left-leaning folks themselves. I don't know how to instill any "it's not all hopeless, so you shouldn't give up and decide not to just not vote at all" feelings to the folks who are inclined towards that. The diehard "anyone but Trumpers" will still vote, but it's not just conservatives boycotting the vote. Voter hopelessness has has some of the left-leaning folks too, although not as many. But if we don't pick Kamela, it might be an even more glaring sign of instability because the VP would be expected to be the one stepping in.
The man on that stage should not be president right now. You might say his administration is doing a great job, but there's no way he's running it with those communication difficulties. In what sense is he leading anything?
@@natethegreatest1000 But most people wouldn't. What happened on that debate stage was an immense humiliation and demoralization for the party, plain and simple. @anitamiller7960 I'm not giving the opposition shit. If Biden is the candidate, I will vote for him. But I'm not going to bury my head in the ground and pretend that his chances of winning the presidency aren't bad, if the Dems are going to put someone else forward (as I believe they should) it has to happen NOW

Nope. Anyone but Harris isn’t burdened by Biden’s unpopularity. Sorry dude but it really seems like racism has to be motivating this reasoning to say it has to be Harris but it can’t be Harris.
39:41 I actually think Jamelle’s logic is a bit flawed about downside risk. I agree that people saying “nothing could be worse than Biden on top of the ticket” is wrong but I think that’s overvaluing the risk of worse than Biden. Biden seems to be almost a guaranteed defeat this November. Losing worse is just not as much of a risk. Maybe there’s some down ballet risk but I think there’s plenty of those with Biden as is. I think the risks of replacing Biden are correctly devalued because the risk of losing by a lot instead of a little is less important than generating any chance to defeat Trump. Now obviously we’ll have to see how “voters” react to the debate but my honest opinion is if anybody thinks Biden can be president they didn’t watch the debate
Absolutely true that Biden’s performance as president is far superior to trump’s failed four years but what we saw is that the debate’s Biden is not the SOTU Biden. Many Americans will extrapolate that deterioration over the next four years and conclude Biden’s acuity is failing at too great a rate to reelect him. Dems need to change horses now.

I really don't agree with what Bouie is laying down. People are having a rational reaction to Biden's being brain-broken in that debate. Saying that Biden should be replaced or deposed is merely rational, and also because media pundits would look insane if they were to keep supporting Biden after that. If the DNC wanted to suspend norms this time and depose Biden, absolutely no one would object.

The 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution outlines a process for removing a President who is deemed unable to perform the duties of the office. This process begins with the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet (or another body designated by Congress) declaring the President's incapacity in writing to the leaders of Congress. Upon this declaration, the Vice President immediately assumes the role of Acting President. If the President contests this declaration, asserting their capability, the Vice President and the Cabinet have four days to reaffirm their original claim. If the Vice President and the Cabinet reaffirm the President's incapacity, Congress must convene within 48 hours and decide the issue within 21 days. A two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate is required to keep the Vice President as Acting President. If Congress does not achieve this majority, the President resumes their duties. This process ensures a systematic approach to addressing presidential incapacity, involving both the executive branch and Congress to maintain a balance of power.
This comment needs more attention. Most people calling for Biden to step aside aren't even aware that there is a process like this that exists and they think they can just replace him with any random governor or other politician.

Exactly! Literally any other field would be better. Biden should have been put out to pasture years ago.
Excellent point on the " young women category".
And the rest, too
If the dems cared so much about democracy why didnt they have a competitive primary? If this is such an existential fight dont we deserve a bad ass champion?
Their donors are too afraid to choose anyone that is to progressive. 😒
It was lost decades ago.
What does that question mean? That you don't believe we're in an existential fight?

@@natethegreatest1000 But most people wouldn't. What happened on that debate stage was an immense humiliation and demoralization for the party, plain and simple.
Exactly! Jamal's reasoning wasn't sturdy on this idea

Stop with the Obama debate it's not the same Obama wasn't a old man in his 80's who looked like he wouldn't make till the end of the debate and even at the end Jill Biden had to help him down the steps ,it's all about the optics with most people and people have old people in their lives and you can't tell them it's fine because they see what happens to their grandpa when the time has come
o
Some people are unlucky enough to have people with mental problems in their lives that shouldn't be ignored.(Trump)
@@4336aaa Like it or not in this day and age it's all about how you look on screen do you think people care if Tom Cruise or The Rock are idiots or they say I won't listen to that music or watch that movie because the singer or actor is a bit crazy ,that is not reality it might be unfair but that's how it is
@@billydog1954 You really choose your politicians by how they look?
@@4336aaa You can't be that naive that you don't know that perception is a huge factor in how people vote , weakness is a killer in politics if voters see you as weak no matter the policies your cooked
@@billydog1954 You seem to forget that the same perception was pushed in 2020. Now Biden is 4 yrs older and Trump is 4 yrs more removed from reality.
Guys Bidens are best shot. We gotta keep this guy in there at all costs. Thank god Jill’s holding things together
@@maxpower8429 Thank god for Jill? You cannot be serious. She is the villain here. She should have shown him reality. This is humiliating him. Never liked him, but I think everyone deserves people around them that help them keep their dignity
@@scottopie8292 na he has to stay in no one else can beat trump, we only have a few months to election. Makes the dems look bad, this show told us how awesome he was makes this show look like liars if now you change your tune and say he’s terrible. We gotta live by our words. Were we lying about Joe the whole time or not
@@maxpower8429 You might be right. But what about bringing out Michelle O or Gavin Newsome now. You would lose zero Biden voters IMO and probably get more young people.
@@scottopie8292 ya maybe. I just think it would look crazy to be promoting Biden so hard after so many complains then drop him at the last minute. It looks like chaos to the average person and hurts credibility. The moves to focus on the house and senate and promote the cabinet, if you lose the White House who cares. Best case Biden is incapacitated and you can credibly replace him. Heart attack, stroke, anything but the reason everyone’s been saying for 4 years
@@maxpower8429 This was not true lol
We shouldn't gloat over someone's misfortune. Calling him out for stepping down is enough
Nonsense. He had no business entering the 2020 primary. The day he did that, he chained a weight to the democratic party in one of THE most pivotal eras of modern American politics. There is no world in which the coming Trump administration ISN'T Joe Biden's, AND centrist Democrats' fault...
That debate actually solidified my vote for Biden. Not because he performed good, don't get me wrong. When Trump talked about how he'd deal with the Palestinian genocide - as in complete it... that put things into perspective for me. Nevermind how he answered every single question with demonizing migrants. Besides, when Kamala inevitably takes over, the conservative freak out will be epic.
"SOlidified" is a meaningless statement. You were never not going to vote for him, which is fine, I'm not picking on you for that. But there's no such thing as "solidifying" a vote. You can't vote any harder than you already do. You aren't the issue. The issue is people who aren't yet registered. We desperately needed Biden to energize young people. If anything, he's just confirmed their voter apathy.
biden is incredibly pro-israel you silly lib
Again with the misinfo about bumpstocks. The bumpstock does NOT cause multiple firings when the trigger is pulled. It's a mechanism used to hit the trigger very quickly. It doesn't involve ANY change to the basic firing mechanism.
He stutters and he's old. SO WHAT? His facts are accurate and he can do the job.
Welcome to the first stage of grief.
He's got one foot in his grave, Einstein.
All it really says is the average voter cares far more about looks, and who can talk better than they do about actual policy and substance. We're a shallow people.
Yeah. We factually "beat medicaid". Handed it over to Republicans who will dismantle it on a silver platter by running a mummy who's politically out of step with modernity.
@@redbomberx354 If you think Biden's policies, propping up a dying empire a little longer, are substantially better than Trump's, then you are shallow. Russian Man Bad !!!!!
