@@danilopompey754 You are wrong, bro. This is just another way of saying that the snowflakes got offended by innocent questioning. There is nothing innocent about the interviewer's question and the framing of that question. To answer your question, yes, yes it would be too harsh a question. War heroes in America are not treated like this on most American media. You are using a strawman to legitimize the dehumanization Coates and the Palestinians. Ask yourself this: Why is it that every time the struggles of the Palestinians are brought up, Hamas first needs to be denounced, and then Israeli Jews' struggles must be acknowledged for the umpteenth time, and then, and only then, can we actually speak about Palestinian suffering? The answer is very simple: Palestinians are viewed as a lesser people than Israeli Jews, and the American media perpetuates this view. As for your last point, who cares if Coates won or not? The point is that the Zionist in the room tried to shame him by comparing him to a terrorist. Would you like to be called a terrorist? I have been called a terrorist sympathizer when I defended Palestinians to my friends, and let me say that I am not friends with them anymore. The fact that you can't recognize this basic fact is jarring. I cannot help but question whether you are a child or an adult because this is the kind of thing that a child with an undeveloped brain would take away from this video.

@@chrismathis9240 - Yes I could literally feel his vocal restraint!! My own throat was shaking and I wasn't even talking! I lived under the occupation during the 2nd lntifada, I know firsthand what it is. Anybody that's lived through Jim Crow, or the Bantustans of S.African Aparteid, N. Korean Songbun, Indian Reservations, or Natzi Ghettos and so on, knows what this is. Even those of us that haven't lived it, understand it intuitively, bc it's rooted in the epigenetic trauma within our ancestral DNA. That's why the Aparteid system is hidden in plain sight - that is of course, until people actually step out of their bubbles and visit the other side. Without skipping a beat, every person of a marginalized community that stepped foot in PaIestine recognized it immediately. And that's why the cloak of obscurity and deflection is necessary, when even DISCUSSING the system - the conversation altogether isn't allowed. That's why the indoctrination to uphold that system has to happen as soon as lsræIis start going to school or military kiddie camp. It starts young. That's why challenging the narrative, like Ta-Nehisi Coates bravely did here, is scary but necessary. The injustice is intersectional. The occupation has become commodified and outsourced across the world as a commercial export. It's even right here on our police departments doorsteps. So this isn't just about my people, the decades of impunity has become a virus that has allowed this system of oppression to stretch itself out and boomerang back to us here in the States, in Africa, and in Asia.
Absolutely, not least as it's conditioned on statehood, and statehood itself is a construct primarily determined by recognition. For instance, many countries 'recognise' Palestine, but it doesn't entirely matter, whereas Israel was recognised by the US and is heavily armed, funded and supported. And that latter part is what matters. It's the power and nothing else. You can talk about international law regarding the requirements to 'be' a state, but they are not fully met even by Israel, indeed Palestine and Israel both meet the criteria largely to the same extent, save only that Israel is viewed as having fixed borders without open contention. When in practice, actually, the whole point is that a large chunk of Israel is occupied territory under international law. But it's what is accepted that counts in practice. And the law has almost no real relevance because these matters are almost never adjudicated and there is no power of enforcement.

@samuelgoldring9691 You do know that the current African countries with created by White Europeans? They carved up the land to create these countries when the colonized Africa. This is basic world history.
@samuelgoldring9691 You're right, but not necessarily in the way that you think. The boundaries of many African countries were determined by European colonizing empires. If you look at a map of Africa, you will notice that some parts of it have angles that are reminiscent of slices of pie. That is not by chance. That is because European colonizing empires sat down and literally divided the continent, in some areas, like slices of pie. Much of the intra-national violence that you see in Africa is because the European colonizing empires, when determining the borders of these new nations, suddenly placed several different ethnic groups into the same nation's boundaries, now competing for limited resources.
@samuelgoldring9691 I didn't get the impression that Coates excluded any countries. He simply made a clear explanation that countries come into existence by FORCE. We assumed that would include Africa, Europe, China, India ---the whole planet. SO, what's your point??

As a South African who was too young to remember the inhumanity of apartheid (my parents lived it. My mom was forced out of her home under the Group Areas Act to make way for white citizens), this moment in history has made me want to go back and re-learn what it took for global governments and corporations to recognise and act against the injustice in my country. The US officially designated Nelson Mandela’s ANC as a terrorist organisation (a label only officially removed in about 2008). Hearing the CBS host centre Israel to the point where an acknowledgement of Palestinian humanity is somehow an affront to Israel has me thinking there are some historical lessons we could learn, most certainly from South Africa. Oh, it’s worth reminding people that Israel supported apartheid South Africa and was, among other things, inspired by its Bantustans, areas where black South Africans lived without autonomy. Read Antony Loewenstein’s ‘The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation around the World’ for more.
thank you for reminding ppl about ISRAEL'S support & complicity in shoring up the south african apartheid regime; many were pulled up short by africans condemning israel in the INTERNATIONAL COURT, especially in the amerikkkan worldview that wondered where that animus was coming from. but americans don't really KNOW much of their OWN history (e.g. the US embargo around HAITI until it made 'reparations' to FRANCE for the loss of their 'property', i.e., liberated african slaves).
As a white South African who grew up during apartheid I completely agree. We know racism and apartheid when we see it, and all the excuses that were made in the white community too, like Communist gevaar.
I’m also a South African and was in my teens when we had our first democratic election and this ‘conflict’ has made me appreciate the risks that our apartheid resistance fighters took to liberate our country. Especially when seeing how our countries started off with similar policies but diverged because the resistance was successful and the international community supported them by means of sanctions. Gaza and the West Bank is what happens when apartheid is left to fester unchecked. Very telling that Tony thinks that this is a crucial pillar of Israeli statehood. It’s probably the only correct thing he says in this whole interview.

first off, brother coates doesn't need those lightweights help in stating, clarifying or defending his position. 2ndly, i suspect they would be out of their depth. lastly, that would have been a very bad look all around; they are just corporate crash test dummies.
Not the first time I have seen those guys have a group think mentality. I remember them doing coverage of two lesbians that had a mixed child by accident (woman was impregnated with african-american sperm). The two lesbian go on to talk about how they had moved to a place to be safe, where everyone knew each other, blah, blah, but now that they had this mix child they were encountering prejudice people. At no point did any of them ask, how nice if the town if they are prejudice or racist?
No country has a right to exist. *People* have a right to exist, and their country should exist only insofar as it defends that right. If it only makes its people less safe, then why should it exist at all? But even that misses the point, because a country is not a specific policy. Calling for the end to a policy that harms the country's people, antagonizes and brutalizes its neighbours, and makes the country into a pariah state... that's not calling for the country to stop existing. If anything, that is offering a solution where it can actually be allowed to exist.
Worth noting that he says that he personally witnessed Jim Crow style Apartheid in Israel/ Palestine where they are practicing segregation and two laws for two people, and the host DOESN’T deny it and doesn’t even say, “Hey! That’s interesting” or “Hey! That’s quite an accusation!” In that very moment he gives away the ENTIRE game. He just goes… …” yeah, but where’s their agency in all this?” The nerve, the hubris, and the chutzpah is pathological. Normal people when confronted with cold hard facts like this do not behave that way.
Me too. I was a navy officer when I we ported in Haifa in 2000 when I finally witnessed the oppression of the Palestinians that was hidden from the media. I couldn't believe I was expected to lay down my life in defense of a country that enforced apartheid. The Palestinians and most other non-jewish races, were viewed by Israelis as lower than dogs. The interview was shocking but glad TNC laid it out. The issue is not complicated. David wants to use smoke and mirrors to talk about a complex history. We need to look at the basic workings of apartheid here and Americans should be appalled. Peace is complicated. Conflict is complicated. The road to end racism is long and hard and in it are many incidences. Palestinians have just been resisting.

Do many Americans, particularly older Americans, feel uncomfortable with condemning apartheid because the time when segregation officially ended is still within living memory? So even middle aged Americans have living parents or grandparents, whom they respect by default, for whom segregation of black and of native Americans was normal? This is a serious question. Is it a refusal of white Americans descended from colonists, to deal with the reality of racism? Meaning worldwide? Out of a cross-generational feeling of guilt? Would they rather pretend racism isn’t the problem and that the situation isn’t about one culture oppressing and displacing another?
I agree with him too, but what is the solution for the Palestinians? Give them citizenship inside of Israel, a country forged in defensive war after defensive war so that their statehood could be undone by giving an ethnic group agency who would vote according to ethnic and religious divisions? Palestine needs its own state and that will require major sacrifices by both Israel and the Palestinian people.
I was very disappointed in the other 2 hosts on the show! The idea that an interviewee was being attacked and they sat there like circus mutes was appalling! Thank you for offering a measured view and analysis of this shameful segment.

I could have seen that posture.
That "right to exist" argument has always been Ill formed. Coates nailed it.
That question is totally silly. One just has to think about for a few seconds. But, it’s not meant to make sense but to silence.
Agreed. I've always struggled with articulating the problem with that framing, and Coates just gave me the words for it.

You do know that the current African countries with created by White Europeans? They carved up the land to create these countries when the colonized Africa. This is basic world history.
It was!

Ordered the book as soon as I saw the interview. I will buy copies for my children too. This interview shows the real American racial hierarchy.
Tony didn’t interview Mr. Coates, he just spewed zionist talking points & accusations. He felt comfortable chastising a black man as if it were 1920. He scolded Mr. Coates for humanizing Palestinians. I never heard of him before, but I bought his book because of this. Tony: You’re my friend unless you disagree with me.
Both Tony and Coates have a right to air their views.I get to decide who is right or wrong.Abash to censorship.
Idk why you went to 1920 as if it’s not racist now
@@ChocheryTvjust say you’re a Zionist
Speak this is literally the best break down of an interview I’ve ever seen!!! Thank you to people who don’t buy into group mentality opinions and instead side with what is right and wrong
I was shunned watching him say that to Mr. Coates. Gayle and Nate sat like two goofy's allowing their guests to be attacked. Made my stomach sick. They should issue a public apology
first off, brother coates doesn't need those lightweights help in stating, clarifying or defending his position. 2ndly, i suspect they would be out of their depth. lastly, that would have been a very bad look all around; they are just corporate crash test dummies.
@babagalacticus In these parts we call them flowergirls....
One is a football player and the other is Oprah’s girlfriend he didn’t need their help lol!
No!! You are wrong. They knew Coates had this fellow, firmly in hand and they would have gotten in his way with the slightest of utterance.
Well said.
Exactly 💯
Good gawwd you said that so eloquently! Thank you.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
@@blacknosugarnocream To be fair, I've had a full year to refine my answer to their talking points. Thankfully, they have never changed their script.
🗣️ THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They even refused to serve me on a road side stand on my way to Jerusalem. They are THE most racist country I have ever visited.
Sam does a great job of pointing out the implications of the subtleties of Dokoupil’s language. As is typical, Tony can’t see his own racism.
Just ordered the book!
This reporter should be deeply ashamed of that line of questioning and I hope he gets fired. I know he won’t but one can hope.
CBS owes Coates a formal apology too. I have idea who those other stupid moonfruits were, I was watching for Coates, which I reckon applies to the majoirty of their audience. On top of being morally spineless, any investor can look at this and understand CBS as a media company has zero respect of how to treat top billing guests on their shows. This is the reason they're doing badly.
Like Emma said, he will be rewarded in some way by certain people. Now or in the future
Propagandist, not reporter.
"These people can't get water in the same place less than a mile apart"
"Well, Israel wanted peace with them"
What the f*ck does that even mean?
naw, the bosses ARE the SAME! infiltration EVERYWHERE
It is his role to ask uncomfortable questions. And Coates handled it very well.
That host was just parroting biased Western chauvinist talking points, as usual, that are purposely lacking in any historical context or nuance.
@@samnabawy2731 Western media moment
Most media personalities are just actors without critical thinking skills.
@@samnabawy2731 mediocre, mediocre. Mediocrity in abundance. Ignorance in full display. Tony should have remained silent and be thought a fool instead he opened his mouth and removed all doubt! Stunning!
Watch the Daily Show interview with Coates to see how an interview like this should have gone.
It was a way better interview, but I'm still frustrated that it mostly focused on the psychology of Zionists and the Jewish perspective. It's so hard for any mainstream media to talk about Palestinian perspectives at all
True I wish it was more focused on Palestinians and their suffering, and i do have my problems with Jon Stewart's politics sometimes but he does seem to be one of the few people with a large platform that has been openly critical of Isreal. Like Sam, he's one of the good ones.
The Daily Show interview was a bunch of word salad from Stewart. He's a hack.
Coates' name, ideals and awards represents his purpose and message. Tony showed his bias and Gayle and Nick sat quietly.
Coates handled this with intelligence, class, and humility. He has a super human capacity to keep composure in the face of a disrespectful line of questioning.
15:12 Emma is spot on here. The host’s “you’re still invited to high holidays” is basically a way of saying you’re still one of the “good ones” 😡
Disgusting
I caught that and the laugh of recognition TNC gave at the end.
Definitely a form of threat and conditional warning rather than acceptance.
The fact that they are called high holidays, as if those are superior to other holidays.
"Oh, I don't mean YOU".
This host should be fired. The disingenuousness of that question is staggering.
fired? he's only following orders. The whole order is rotten
I hate censorship from the right or the left. Both Coates and the host have a right to freedom of speech.Let the best ideas win.Why are people afraid of alternative views.
@@ChocheryTv I hate people with no principles.

For doing his job?
This is the best analysis on this entire interview on the web.
I agree they were extremely disrespectful
Why did Gayle try to interrupt TC but stayed silent when her cohost was attempting to ambush the guest.
She should be ashamed
To be fair, interrupting people is kind of her thing
She was getting guidance from the control room. They wanted her co-host's point of view out not the TC's.
Because she is one of them
What so wrong how Ms. Gayle and her other co-host just allowed Tony Dokoupil to talk against this man. If the man is not fired from his job. What else are you allowing. He needs to go.

I honestly wish that the media could discuss what is going on in Israel honestly. This is the same as them not talking about apartheid in S. Africa.
Ta-Nehisi Coates is on a similar journey to James Baldwin who was initially quite taken with Israel. Soon, he began to see the oppression and injustice and fell out of love with Israel before moving to Paris.
Coates was just pointing out that "The emperor has no clothes on." Tony, instead of self-reflection continues to defend and make excuses for the naked emperor!
For anyone who still don't get it look up and read the children's story on "The emperor with no clothes "
Man this was uncomfortable to listen to. What a gross display.
You can hear the emotions in Coates voice as he attempts to thread the needle while being attacked. That was wild. I absolutely detest when Black men have to bite their tongue when talking with bigots.
CBS is shameful as hell for allowign this. I don't know who the rest of the mfers on that panel are, I know Coates though, and I reckon that's true for the majority that watched. Who tf is that dude to talk like that first of and double shame of CBS for not even standing by their top billing let alone having any morals.
@@xbabu142x you expect an AMERICAN CORPORATE maninstream media outlet to HAVE & EMPLOY 'morals'? fascinating.
what they have, is a "bottom line"; morals & bottom lines are often in conflict in late stage capitalism.
They didn't even respect their bottom line, let alone any morals. The respect to the bottom line is the one and only standard businesses will hold themselves to, this is why regulation is necessary.
This one needs to Candace Owens to let him know. "and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan."

So true... So true ❤
This is a beautiful sentiment. Good reminder for all of us.
What’s crazy is that it was glossed over about America’s past history of Apartheid….1960’s and Jim Crow wasn’t that long ago and the lack of understanding.
It is disgusting and racists to compare the right for a state to exist with the right for an entire people to exist.
That's what fascists do. They are big with flipping the script
This guy should be fired, and I'm against cancel culture but he just implied that bc a person is Palestinian it is ok for them to not be able to use certain roads.
Exactly, how many people have lost their jobs for standing up for Palestinians as a comparison.
They cancel themselves
Why cancel. All views should be heard.
My girlfriend has duel citizenship and owns a house in near the west bank borderline. She's afraid of settlers not the Palestinians. She's been assaulted for wearing American style clothes.
Your girlfriend is a tear-o-riss.... There are no "good settlers"
@@charleyu5506 she isn't a settler
She is a settler, and she should give back the home unless she is a native.
Yes.
Ta-Nehisi is spot on. Standing on what you consider is wrong is strong, and I commend his response.
Thank you for offering a measured view and analysis of this shameful segment.

the best part about the interview is that Tony Dulcopo in trying to "expose" Coates, really exposed himself.

Coates writes beautifully throughout the book about the importance of writing, he analyzes the craft of writing with several examples, and he speaks to the politics of even what’s written for entertainment and media. It’s positioned as a letter to his former students from a summer class in 2022. It’s a little unfortunate that all that was overshadowed by this ambush, but I agree with everyone who says this just shines a light on the book in a major way
