    I've pulled starters apart to see what makes them work. Then I just have smaller pieces to put in the bin. I wouldn't have the patience to rebuild one. Let alone do it for a living. It is amazing how everything is kept going. All these little workshops up and down the streets. Each churning out their own little bit of the puzzle that makes a whole object. And all the kid workers ready to become the next generation.

      In Canada, I had to figure all that stuff out on my own without any internet, adult mentors, or money whenever my own stuff broke down and I had to get it up and running wherever it dropped. It's a relief to see it done right, full rebuild, with proper machinery and proper materials.

    Good job... Rebuilt to be good as new! This was also very educational as it shows the insides of a starter and what's needed to restore it to working condition. I always thought the field coils were round wire, not flat copper strips with insulation in-between to prevent shorts. Your son (?) is a wonderful asset and you are teaching him a trade that he can keep forever. A good father for sure. A++

    • @DimbweMazala
      @DimbweMazala Рік тому +4

      It is not as good as new. He compromised the reliability in several ways. He removed the rubber waterproof insulator on the electromanetic winding, replacing it with a paper insulator whose insulative dimensions he determined by his eyes; he placed this paper on coil designed to carry hundreds of amps of current. Then to secure this insulative paper in place he wrapped a piece of clothe around the coil, that he then tried to waterproof with paint. You, the original insulator that he burned with a lot of effort, was designed to withstand the high temperatures in the coil. It was impervious to water. We do not know how well or long his paper insulator will withstand the heat generated by the passage of high currents in those windings. And then we do not know how well the cloth and that paint will sustain the same heat resistance. We do not how long that paint will last as the amateur spins in that enclosure. It works when new, but a motor is designed to be durable... What happens if the vehicles starter is placed into passed through water, and has to be started before the starter dries out????

      @@DimbweMazala A lot of what you say is true, but rewinding shops used varnish as an insulator for over 100 years. The paper isn't perfect, but I've seen paper insulation on many, many motor windings. It works. Furthermore, he used Gold-Tex Insulation paper. It's impregnated with an insulator so it won't absorb water. They did a fine job IN MY OPINION.

    This is the kind of work ethic that needs the US needs to remember how to do. These guys are providing a solution to a problem and building a business at the same time. Each member contributing to the success and building a skill set. While in the US fools provide solutions that no one asked for to problems they themselves invented.

      Funny, I work hard every day running my own business rebuilding starters and alternators in the US. These guys are doing so much wrong I would have to reeducate them on how to rebuild. I understand they do not have much to work with but they are not even doing the basic stuff correctly. I have no idea where you live in the US, but around here almost everyone works hard and has this work ethic. But I am in a mid west farm community and you might be in a big city, and that could be the problem.

    I was amazed and intrigued by the giant soldering iron the mechanic was using, I just imagine if it was an electric soldering iron it must have been quite expensive, a soldering iron that size I thought was quite expensive and very rare. After looking carefully the soldering iron is not actually an electric soldering iron, maybe it is just made of any scrap metal but the mechanic can use it by heating it using a gas flame or kerosene burner and it works just as well as an electric soldering iron.
