I was a summer student out in Calverton (flight test center) in 1982ish. I was given the opportunity to witness a test firing of the Gatling gun attached to a brand new F14. The test was operated from a bunker with the F14 right outside with the landing gear configured in a kneeling position which I guess aimed the gun into a sandpit. I think I have that right. Anyway, when they fired it, it literally felt like someone was pounding on my chest with both fists - inside the bunker. Very awesome.
The flares are at the beginning of the video. The gun run is right near the end, when the tower says that it's his option, "Wet or Dry". There's a puff of smoke (Gun gasses) which go under the jet, and a burping sound. At 100 rounds per second, that's what a gun run sounds and looks like. BRRRRPWHOOOOO! Retired Tomcat Ordie LOVES this clip!
Awesome looking plane. I got to go on a private tour as a kid of the USS Ranger where they filmed Top Gun. Got to get close up with the F-14 and even looked down the huge engines vents. That really was a once in a lifetime opportunity because my late father was a smooth talker and worked for the local tug company.
I love how that second cat tucks down into tree level yawing into firing position upon its potential target. These machines look wild at this level ! A perfect vid to prove it.
My dad was a machinist at Grumman Bethpage during the 60's and early 70s, so I've always had a soft spot for Grumman planes, especially the Tomcat, one of the greatest military aircraft to ever fly, and I think it would still be great today if it was still in service.
I loved the F-14 so much. It just looked so badass. I love the F/A-18 Hornet as well, but the Tomcat was the badass plane when I was a kid. I had so many models of the F-14 I played with. The wings that could be out full or tucked back in.
I love the F-14. I'm so glad I got to see a few before they retired. One did a low pass over my dad's command, USS Reid. They got on the radio and asked if any nearby aircraft wanted to do a flyby. We got an F-18, an S-3 Viking, and then the F-14 came. It passed next to us at about 100 ft and then pulled straight up and opened the wings, doing an aileron roll into the clouds. So cool!
The Tomcat still is my favourite Jetfigter. Thanks for sharing this video with really LOW flying Tomcats. I not have seen such low flyby with F-14s before. This plane is legendary! 20 years ago, I saw A-10s strafing and bombing at Nordhorn Range in Germany, that was awesome, but seeing this great Jetfighter life flyingby must be an unforgettable experience.
The C-5 Galaxy is more like the Cadillac of the skies. Fighter jet wise... not really any can be called a Cadillac, maybe the F-105 Thunderchief or F-101 Voodoo..
It was extremely maneuverable and athletic due to high lift/drag ratio as well as the variable swing wings/ low wing loading. It could out-maneuver, out-turn much smaller, lighter fighters. People who flew it, still obsess over it to this day and do seminars on it. That is why I called it Corvette. BTW, Corvette is a heavy car for a sports car (3650 lbs) LOL.

God damn it that was beautiful!!! I think the Navy is crazy for retiring the greatest fighter jet it ever had. Better range, weapons load and radar than any plane the Navy has now! Only ever got to see the Tomcat in flight once in my life but it was amazing.
No. The Super Hornet has over double the missile load, 12 of which can be longer ranged and more accurate than the Phoenix. The SH radar is over 4 times the power of the Tomcat's radar. And the range is longer for the SH as well. The Tomcat was not a good fighter. It was an interceptor, not a fighter. It didn't maneuver well, it was maintenance intensive, and you're struck over a hollywood movie years ago.
@@justinmoe3171 For something of it's age and size- maybe, but the fact was that It was not a fighter. There's a reason it could only carry two sidewinders- it wasn't supposed to dogfight.
