I hate to say this but what killed the Tomcats was the expensive and fragile sweep wing design that needs a lot of maintenance so it dont break apart midair.
My dad was a machinist at Grumman Bethpage during the 60's and early 70s, so I've always had a soft spot for Grumman planes, especially the Tomcat, one of the greatest military aircraft to ever fly, and I think it would still be great today if it was still in service.
I love the F-14. I'm so glad I got to see a few before they retired. One did a low pass over my dad's command, USS Reid. They got on the radio and asked if any nearby aircraft wanted to do a flyby. We got an F-18, an S-3 Viking, and then the F-14 came. It passed next to us at about 100 ft and then pulled straight up and opened the wings, doing an aileron roll into the clouds. So cool!
This plane, the F-15, the F-16 and the A-10 are the OGs in sexy in fighter jets. I mean yeah the F-22 and F-35 are good looking no doubt but these are the fighter jets of my childhood, and the 90s was the last great decade and the last great decade of good looking cars.
Never seen this footage before. This was the old glory days, before they had to fly 'straight and narrow' (about 2001) and cut out all the blue angel stuff. I had a few interesting flights during this time.
Does anyone ever feel the hair on their body stands up when you hear the front of a jet coming and theirs that menancing deep sucking sound of the engines. I love that sound.
