  • @sassulusmagnus

    I've read his book on bear attacks. Very informative. He's not saying, by the by, that a sow will not attack to protect her cubs. He's just saying that the mother who is simply protecting her cubs behaves differently than a bear that is looking to prey on humans. Predatory behaviour is usually very quiet and stealthy. Defensive behaviour is typically noisy and/or demonstrative; the bear wants to send a message. And yes, you could get hurt in either case.
    Having done a fair amount of back country camping in black bear territory, my experience would suggest that most bears want nothing to do with people. It is important to pay attention to things like the local availability of foods that the bears would normally consume. If it has been a late spring, or if the summer berry crop has been poor, you should adjust your plans accordingly. Always carry bear spray and be ready to use it at a moment's notice. I have never had to do so, even when camping solo in areas with substantial populations of black bears. Keep a clean campsite. Always hang your food up high enough. Learn how to read signs of local bear presence, and where possible avoid areas with fresh bear sign even if it means altering your plans a bit. Nature rules.

      Yeah that’s the typical answer that I get all the time when I post a bear video. That oh those bears are WAY more scared of you than anything. And yeah I totally agree with that statement. But out of the 99% that one % that’s left that’s old ,sick, hungry or some mental condition is the one that I’m afraid of. Or someone’s kids in the backyard. And also I recall reading that a grizzly will beat you till your not a threat anymore (basically not moving). But black bears will kill and most likely eat. Which is scary, bears are tripling in population yearly in New England

    I live in Northeast Tennessee and have dealt with black bears often. Mostly shy and quiet but can be aggressive when dealing with a hungry one who can't find it's normal food or mother with cubs.
    I do disagree with him when he says they are normally "safe" to be around and are safer than dogs. No matter how well fed or calm a bear seems if you are 30 feet from a bear you are still in mortal danger. Not to mention I've beat an aggressive dog before who tried to attack my kids. If it had been a bear that would have ended differently.

    If a bear turns and shows interest in me, does not respond to my commands, approaches me still after making noise, he is a dead bear, either with cubs or otherwise. I am not willing to roll the dice in favor of the bear. Humans killing every bear that shows an interest in him, regardless of what exposure he experiences, ie: human eating habit, waste, odors,etc should be killed. If after 70 or so years of thinning out in this manner, and perhaps the black bear population is a hundred or so total in north america, and there are now no predator attacks, then this is manifest of a new generation of black bears who's genes only trigger the ancestral fears of man. So killing "human interest" bears is simply a weeding out that genetic pool leaving bears that only possess the ancestral gene pool. Nature does this automatically, and the life of one human is more important than the whole bear species living combined.

    I just had an encounter, really similar to what this guy is describing at the start. Big mature boar, he was a bit skinny, wasn't making any noise, just moving slowly. It was me and a young girl doing forest fire work. We ran into this bear, 20-30m away, made noise, he slowly slowly moved off, not far, but out of sight. So we did an arc around him, relaxed a bit, and continued on. I did break a big stick in case we came across another bear or he came back. I also told my coworker that if we did run into a bear, and it attacked, that she should just run while I beat it with the stick. We ran into a deer along the way, it moved off. We heard some noise, but we assumed it was the deer. 300m later, this bear comes running up to us. I start yelling as loud as I can at the bear. Instantly, he starts slooowly moving across me. Within 15m. Maybe 10m away. He wasnt huffing, wasn't bluff charging, wasn't snapping his jaws. Just slow movements. Meanwhile I'm yelling and smashing shit with the stick, and standing on blowdown, sometimes doing my own, two step, bluff charge. While all this was going on, I got my coworker to call for help, and figure out a bearing to the nearest road. After about 5 minutes or so, he slowly moved away, just out of sight (40m). I'm still yelling and smashing branches. Right when he's out of sight, I take the chance and slowly retreat, and then, after I'm far enough away, move at a quick pace the heck out of there....
    Never have I been so afraid. For the first time, I really felt like I was gonna die. A very, very, eerie feeling. But at the time, I was thinking pretty clearly, and I wasn't going down with a fight.
    I know what you're thinking as you're reading this... Why no bear spray or gun? Well, I was working at building a fireguard, which is somewhat close to a construction site, by an urban area. So I stripped as much weight as I could, along with the bear spray. I got pulled off that job to do some scouting and line locating in the bush, which was right along the fire edge. I thought about my bear spray, but it was in another truck. So I didn't have the option to grab it anyways....
    Lesson learned though. ALWAYS expect the worst. And you won't be caught like I was.
    I truly believe we was lucky. And my yelling and smashing was the only thing that pushed the bear off.

    Nope, CAN'T agree with him about a sow with cubs. Some will bluff and allow you to back away, but the one I've had experience with did not. My husband didn't see her and the cubs soon enough and she rushed at him intending to maul him when our old dog got between them and she seriously mauled her instead. Our big lab tore out of the door and went after her, saving the old dog and my husband. He put her out of the yard and the sound of my gun kept her and cubs going. So that sow meant business, she wasn't bluffing. How do you know which ones will do you harm? I just consider every one of them very capable, and likely to do it if they decide to. They are unpredictable. I prefer not to be a fool if I can help it. I never let my guard down with them. Just once is one too many times for me.

    • @Eusantdac

      They are indeed unpredictable because they all have their own unique personalities. No one bear is like another and so, yes: always be prudent and aware that bears may be in our surroundings, when we are out in the forest/mountains.

    • @trenchantsometimes5149
      @trenchantsometimes5149 6 років тому +28

      Scott
      Yep, I have his books and I appreciate all the work he's done, but he and anyone else can take their statistics and stick them in their ear when a sow with cubs intends to maul someone. All bears are individuals and no one can predict with 100% accuracy what they will do in each situation and encounter.
      People have said oh, she'll just send them up a tree, leave and come back for them when you've gone. Or, they'll run away when they see you. Yeah, tell that to the people they've mauled or the families of the people they've killed. Statistics and "experts" are one thing, but keeping in mind what could happen and being prepared is better in my opinion.
      I want people to be aware and safe, not just filled with statistics. There's no time to quote statistics to a bear when it's mauling you. My husband's attitude has certainly been adjusted since his encounter with a sow who should have sent her cubs up a tree and came back for them later. Our old dog found it hard to go back into that yard, too, and she still looks for a while before she sets foot in it. To hell with statistics when it comes to unpredictable animals.

    • @jaeatyet

      @jimf1964 5 років тому +15

      These people responding probably just read the books, and have never been around a bear. Also, they don't seem to understand anything about statistical data. His research shows a tendency. Perhaps a strong one, but that doesn't mean it's 100% that way. As you said, bears can be very unpredictable, and this whole article is about how some do attack and kill people. So what the hell are they even talking about? This also doesn't talk about people who are injured by bears. Only fatalities.
      Your experience isn't just some "anecdotal" comment. It was a real life experience. Perhaps she wouldn't have killed him. Perhaps the dog got involved and triggered a stronger defensive situation. That's possible, but I bet the people commenting would have sat there and just soiled themselves in your situation. Anyone who thinks bears aren't potentially dangerous, and unpredictable are fools, or have never seen one. Glad you were all ok, hope the dog was too.

He set down by a large felled tree and made a fire thinking that would scare it off, as he was telling the camera what he was doing all of a sudden we hear crashing in the brush he says oh shit and he fires 2 shots from his handgun and yells a bunch more! Evidently while he wasn't watching the bear it moved in on him and charged him but the gun scared it off and he got outta there unscathed!😲 Which only proves that they will hunt humans as I've heard about before but everyone says no they won't hunt humans!🤔

    I spend a lot of my time hiking and kayaking in backwoods areas and have had a number of contacts with black bears. Most of them have simply sniffed the air, got my scent, or heard my noise and taken off. However I have had 2 black bear close encounters, one where the bear came into my camp at night and wreaked havoc with my kayak and tent but never attacked me, and 2 when I came around a corner on a trail and heard the Hrrrmpph of the bear before I saw it. The bear in the second encounter appeared to have a fresh kill in the bush and I had come too close. After I backed away it became clear that the bear wasn't following me. I stood still, trying to keep calm and not trigger the bear, then I turned very slowly and began walking away very slowly not wanting to trigger a prey response. The bear never followed me, it was late summer and there was lots for him/her to eat. But I do feel lucky because this bear was stomping and swaying in agitation (but not moving towards me). I had a bear follow behind me in Chapleau while I was walking into town to go to work. This was just after lunchtime and I had a 6 mile walk to town. As I was walking cars were going by me and honking but I had no idea why, I thought maybe because I was a young girl then..... but anyway this went on for about 20 minutes when another guy passed by in a van honking on his horn and not letting up then he drove away. To myself I was thinking what is going on when I decided to turn around and look behind me. Well I got the shock of my life there was this huge black bear walking directly behind no more than 6 feet from the back of me like a dog. When I realized he was there I was terrified and had nowhere to run and all alone. I then remembered what my grandfather had told me from his hunting days that if you ever come across a bear on your own stay completely still, make no sudden moves and just stare him in the eye. I used to think when he gave me that advice I thought noway I'm running out of there. But at this moment coming face to face and no way out I thought I would be killed. So tried what my grandfather said because at this point I had nothing else. So I stood there and just stared at him in the eye not moving (I may have wet myself I can't remember) He sniffed in the air trying to get my scent and then pushed his paw into the gravel and threw it at me scattering stones everywhere. He sniffed some more and I was trying not to cry or make a sound when he again threw his head in the air and to one side then proceeded to run away towards the bush. When I realized how lucky I was I ran into town to the visitors station. The fellow in there said hey there is a bear out there following a girl so you better stay in here where it's safe. I told him I was the girl and started crying I had been so terrified. I asked him how he knew that and the man that drove the van stopped in and told him to call for help. I then thought to myself call for help? That man in the van could have driven his van between me and the bear and picked me up to get out of there but instead he left me there. I know God was watching over me because I just couldn't believe this happened to me but I never heard a sound at all behind me the entire time and if I hadn't turned around I never would have known what hit me, but I do believe he may have been stalking me...............Got my drivers license shortly afterwards.

      While Bear Spray is good, a capable stout Handgun loaded with RFN Hard cast Lead or solid Metal Bullets (9mm 357,10mm 44/ 45/50 calibers) is the best to have for within 50 meters to effectively quickly put down an engauging attacking Black, Grizzley, Brown or Polar Bear.

    I've read in multiple apparently credible articles, that playing dead, in an emergency situation, is a good thing to do with grizzly bears, but the worst thing to do with a black bear. The explanation is that, if it gets to that point, the black bear is more likely to be viewing you as dinner, while the grizzly is just seeing you as a threat. That's counter-intuitive to me, but maybe humans were more aggressive in trying to eliminate grizzlies, thus they've evolved to be fearful, even though they're far more deadly? Any truth to any of this? I just looked this up because I turned around today and there was a big, lumbering, fat black bear maybe 15 feet away, in my corn patch. Freaking thing was as silent as a ghost, and gave maybe a fraction of a f**k when I grunted at it. It did slowly lumber away, though...Spooky.

    • @anneleppold8776
      @anneleppold8776 6 років тому +6

      It has more to do with the difference between size and aggression levels in black bears vs. grizzlies, and little to do with the evolution of bears alongside humans (black bears and other kinds of bears have been hunted by humans to near-extermination too, not just grizzlies). Black bears are typically smaller and more curious than they are aggressive. You can fight off a black bear. They are closer in size to humans, while grizzlies are much bigger than we humans. Where a black bear will be scared off by you hurting it, a grizzly is more aggressive and will just keep attacking you. And you can't beat a grizzly bear. A black bear might kill you but it will more likely run away; a grizzly absolutely will kill you if you keep giving it a reason to defend itself or its babies. If you play dead, it's your best chance because they hopefully won't see you as a threat anymore when you stop moving. But play dead with a black bear and it will keep messing with you just out of curiosity. I doubt any kind of bear sees humans as food, unless they are starving to death and very desperate.

      Anne, I have been charged by a grizzly trying to move me off its favorite salmon hole, and I have been stalked by a large male black bear that I eventually shot, killed, skinned, and hauled six miles out of the November woods over three days. These are two totally different animals behaving in totally different ways, and each bear is totally unstoppable without a gun. Your statement here is naive at best.

    • @Hako2004

      Grizzly cubs don't climb as nimbly and readily as black bear cubs, so the mother grizzly is compelled to attack to defend her cubs. Black bear mothers may threaten and pop their jaws as the cubs climb to safety, but won't necessarily attack. If a black bear attacks, especially if there are no cubs present, it probably means to kill and eat you. Play dead against the Grizzly, and fight with your fists, feet (and any weapon available) against a black bear.

    I like bears, but I never trust them. They're too smart and are always hungry. I've had two encounters, 1) The humorous scene. While picking blackberries I heard what sounded like two people talking in a low murmur on the other side of the patch, picking their berries, I supposed. I ducked to go through an opening to get at the sunny side and came out, expecting to see the folks I heard. Nope. It was a big fat blackie, calmly pulling vines towards his lips, sucking the berries into his mouth - while mumbling to himself. Think: nom, nom, nom... totally oblivious to my presence, until I stood full height about 30ft away. he suddenly spotted me and bolted as fast as I've ever seen an animal take off, straight up a 40 ft slope that had to be 60 degrees. I mean FAST. After that, my confidence around bears was one of false bravado and I never came close to one in any case.
    Then, many years later and not long ago, 2) The Not Funny Scene. Baker Lake WA. late September, very warm weather and late huckleberries everywhere. I was canoe camping alone in a patch near the shore. 1am or so, I woke up hearing , and feeling, a log being rolled about 100feet behind my tent. Huffing and grunting sounds. I come out of my tent, fumbling with a headlamp, managing to get it over one eye, while holding a .45 Vaquero. The light was inadequate since bear fur does not reflect well, but I could see his eyes looking at me, then away, then sounds of movement to the right, then more eyes, the nothing but huffing more to the right - now parallel with the shore and coming closer. He was flanking me and didn't care. Now, at 35ft, the light was enough to fully reveal what I thought might be my death - a very large boar, standing, chomping and threatening. I started yelling as low and loud as I could, kicking dirt with my bare feet and trying to raise enough dust to show I had some power. How pathetic. After about 30 seconds of mutual display, he made the conscious decision to calmly lower and turn away. He decided.
    I did not sleep that night and built up my fire and sat back-to, so my night vision would not be hindered. I figured he was rolling logs for the slugs and wanted to finish off his grazing in the huckleberry patch - in which I was ensconced. He was not pleased.
    Why did I not fire warning shots? A vaquero is a single action revolver that holds six rounds, loading is slow. I wasn't going to waste any potential in the air. While powerful enough, the range of engagement would have been about 20feet before I could have fired my first aimed shot at a charge. What next if he didn't go down? Another aimed shot, now probably at about 5 feet? Before that bear expired, I would have been a shredded mass of tissue and broken bones, with Zero ability to get help from down lake - there was only a couple other people there in a 9 mile area.
    I no longer carry a pistol up there much. Now, it's a short shotgun, loaded for bear. I'm glad the bear made the right decision.

    • @Rutherford_Inchworm_III
      @Rutherford_Inchworm_III 4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the story. You can get some pretty hefty handloads for the .45 Colt, but I still wouldn't call any of them reliable black bear medicine. Going to the 12-gauge with slugs was an easy choice, but there's plenty of options in the .44-.454 Mag range that are also more adequate vs. black bear than .45 Colt.

    • @OutnBacker
      @OutnBacker 2 роки тому +1

      @Michael Hawk 1) You weren't there. 2) You have no idea what "most " people would do. 3) The chances of hitting a charging bear more than once within 30 feet are very slim. While a Vaquero single action in .45 Colt is enough cartridge, it was pitch dark, and a large bear can cross 30 feet in about 1.5 seconds. A skilled pistolero might get off two shots - and maybe the second one will hit the target, but I doubt it. Maybe you are a super hero, but I'm not. Try it some time. Set up two pieces of cardboard - one at 30 ft, the other at 15ft. Draw a vital area on them both - like a shoulder bone or forehead of a bear. Even though second piece isn't moving, I'd almost bet you miss if you had to shoot two shots within 1.5 seconds - the speed of a charging beat at that distance. Compound that wit adrenalin - then do it at night from a dead sleep. My guess is you'll embarrass yourself, but won't have the guts to come back on here and admit it.
      My encounter lasted about 30 seconds from the time the bear was standing and displaying threats, to his standing down and walking away. I didn't need to waste a round like "most people" would. I am certain I would have hit him good and hard with the fiorst round , but the second might have been too late to avoid getting the crap beat out of me or worse.

    I was stealth camping in Florida a couple weeks ago. I had my hammock and tarp set up, a small radio, and a small fire. I had eaten and was just stoking the fire.
    Then from my left rear I heard something 15-20 ft away. When I turned my headlamp on to see what it was it ran making a lot of noise through the bush. A short while later I again heard a noise in the same spot, and once again I turned on the light to get a look and see. Again it went into the bush but much quiter this time. After about another 20 minutes or so it was again in the same spot, and again ran when I put the light towards it. This time it made a lot of noise as it ran through the bushes.
    At this point I thought it made too much noise to be a deer even though before setting up camp I had explored the area and saw a few deer tracks nearby.
    When I got up in the morning I went to where the sound had come from and realized there was a large game trail there not 10 or 12 feet from the head side of my hammock. This made me wonder if it had been a bear and so did the fact that it made so much noise going through the bush.
    I then had a little coffee and breakfast and then packed up. When I got on the main trail I noticed a large pile of fresh dung. I knew it wasn't any kind I was familiar with. I then took a stick to inspect it. It was fresh, real fresh, and full of green plant matter, and very stinky. I then went home and searched Google and sure enough it was bear crap.
    Everyone said i was crazy for going out there alone. For a couple days i wondered if it would be safe to go there again because it is somewhat convenient.
    I had camped twice in that vicinity and probably will again. I figure if the bear wanted to eat me it had its opportunity. He probably had smelled the chili I ate, or heard my radio and was just curious.
    I am still a happy camper.

    Bears are "wired" to be opportunists. The best you can do is not make yourself a target. I had one in the boundary waters that liked to "test" you while you were at the latrine- it would just stay outside of range, but would circle downwind of you. It also raided our camp..it ended up stealing our food bag up in the tree late one night. Since that time, I never go there without my .44 mag strapped to my side, and I keep a clean camp. I never clean/cook fish in camp, and I often do breakfast and lunch away from camp because I am either traveling or out fishing. I also refrain from hanging a food bag- I stash it away from camp now- those bears are conditioned to looking up in the trees for food bags.

If the bear approaches you and you have a plastic comb, a trick an Apache friend of mine taught me is to comb the hair on the top of the Bears head and part it slightly to one side. The more closely you can get a black bear to resemble Alan Alda, the more likely it will become preoccupied with its own appearance and let you alone.

    In November 2017 I was stalked several times by a large male black bear while hunting in the Adirondacks. I killed it at thirty yards as it was getting ready to charge from behind two fallen trees. Biggest bear I ever killed. Took days to pack it out to the truck.

      Dr. Ben Tharduntha yes, gathering himself to make that last predatory sprint. He was watching me from between two large spruce that were blown down. I couldn’t believe what i was watching, the hairs on my neck stood up, and I realized the bear was still hunting me, even after being shot at earlier that day. So yes, getting ready to charge. Not out of territorial anger, but out of predatory determination to get dinner. I was not going to be dinner

    By the way, Truman Green, bears do not kill for a living. They live to eat, thats for sure, but 90% of their diet( depending on where they live) is vegetative. They have been known to kill deer or moose calves, and fish, but humans are not on their menu. The rare case of a bear killing and eating a human is an abberation. Your idea of a bear being a blood thirtsy killing machine is misguided. All omnivores or carnivores have to kill at times to eat.

    Let's not forget about the idiot that turns their home into a feeding ground to draw the bears in, all the while thinking they're "communing" with nature. They're too stupid to realize that they are putting their selves at risk, but also depraved as to the safety of people living near by that don't want bears rummaging on their property and associating their home with food.

      A bear is a bear and most bears do nothing but eat all day long that they have in common. What they may not have in common is that some bears may not eat all day long because there's no food. So when they don't find any food source such as the berries the insects etc.... Then yes it is only natural for a bear to attack human for food source. this is where the natural resources department is not doing their job and making sure the bears are finding enough food in the wild. So by not doing thatthey are not advising citizens that there are hungry bears within the area.

    Spray is for tourists areas that bears occasionally visit for food.

    Fact is bears have 3 things they will do each is different on is attack as a defensive (territorial) the other is flee so yelling standing your ground Makita noise etc can and most likely will detour his actions. But their is one response that you can't detour with out a fight and this is when they hunt you for food nothing you do in this case will save your life except luck this means the bear is not defending it is attacking for food the only stop to a predatory attack is lethal force my experience has only been with territorial responses the only bears that I have had any issues with have been young black bears and big old loner males who are aggressive if threatened or surprised and all bears are dangerous just know that if they are hunting you then you will have to defend your self best way to know this is a hunting bear will not openly show itself till he knows you have to fight or you by chance see him just my experience all wild animals are dangerous especially when you are a lone hiker jogger camper always be willing to defend your self and always make yourself known in bear country .

    of course there are no frequent attacks. those 700k bears in north america don't live in cities as people don't live in the woods. and bears don't make a difference between human meat and moose calf meat the same way humans would have no problem eating chicken today and beef tomorrow.
