It would be nice indeed if I could stay in my chair during a flight (I am a wheelchair user). Sadly, it will likely never happen. Airplanes are fundamentally different from trains and buses (which have done this by the way). The passenger cabin is designed for maximum survival during an extremely high impact event. Unfortunately, there are no restraints made that would hold a wheelchair and its occupant during such an event (crash). Having a 500 pound wheelchair+occupant hurtling through the air after a crash is the nightmare scenario they are trying to avoid.

How does that even make any sense regarding safety? How is it in any way safe
Not worth that small being on wheels convenience if it will compromise yourself and everyone else on the plane.
Why not admit the obvious safety issue? Everyone is complaining on the convenience and little mention of the very serious safety issues that bring and saying “they can do it on so easily on buses and trains so planes can just as easily do it too” PUBLIC transport is not comparable in the slightest to a airborne plane! There’s a danger in having the person in the chair on the plane. Even when they’re in the chair securely and the chair is secured to the plane floor if there is a incident with the plane, like a hard landing or crash, that wheelchair becomes incredibly dangerous to the person in the chair and other passengers. It’s hard to have to put their chair in the cargo hold but it’s really safer for everyone. My mom’s chair weighed about 300 lbs. and took 4 firemen to lift, so it didn’t need to break loose in a plane crash. I do agree that the airlines should treat them more carefully and if they had to pay to replace them they’d take far better care of them for passengers.

It's a valid concern. I work in the planes, so I will clarify why. You see, most aisles in the plane are too small to accommodate regular wheelchairs. Reason is , to accommodate as many seats as possible....it business and profits nothing personal .
Second, for safety reasons which is more important for the customers and the airlines. Everyone's seat in the plane has to be secured to the floor . When hit by severe turbulence, one's chair will be flying around and to the ceiling causing injury to themselves and others and possible deaths. I hope with a little light on the reasons, you can find ways to navigate better in your future essay arguments. Best of luck
