Zu, the guy I was talking about in controversy section has reached out to me, explaining his side of things. He regrets drawing those pictures years ago and doesnt want to be harrased for it anymore. From our conversation, he seems like a pretty okay guy, so I think it is time to let go of past and atleast stop hunting him down. I am not endorsing anything he drew back then, but it seems like all of that is in the past, so I think it is time we let it go aswell. Also I apologized to him and here for saying he should go to jail, that was too much from me. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy this video and also to Frontier dev team, I dont really have much to say other than what was said in a video already, so good luck with any future updates and projects.
Honestly, Zu was a scapegoat. As weirded out as I am about his past, I can’t say I have any real issues with him compared to the slimeballs at the top of this dev team
I was a VA on this mod and the dude that wrote the NCR campaign wrote everything independent of the other team. He refused to share his script and was semi difficult ult to work with. Thats what I heard anyway. So hopefully that cleared some things up
@@evergreenmills1547 most of the devs were teens to early twenties when they started working on the mod. So I cant really blame them for messing that part up TBH. They probably didn't want to scrap the work
"No mods are lore friendly because they're not in the base game" - I think this way of thinking undermines the point of the term 'lore friendly'. The term you're looking for might be 'canon', because yeah, mods aren't canon - but the term 'lore friendly' is used to distinguish mods that could fit into the established lore from mods that could not, because there are a lot of players who care about lore consistency and find that lore-unfriendly stuff breaks their immersion, but who still want to use mods.
if the mod shoehorns the enclave or anything dc related into the mojave then it's not lore friendly. something like autumn leaves however is lorefriiendly as it feels like another dlc.
That's the main reason for me never installing it. I could just ignore the cringe of fucked up stuff, but I like to play my playthroghs as serious stories. In my first playthrogh on pc I did install many wacky stuff just cause I wanted to test playing with mods, but still, even there it were just small stuff that could be easily explained somehow without breaking too much lore, unlike the enclave having a super futuristic spaceship that shoots lazers with a name written in neon lights outside.
Fun fact: The voice actor for Tiberius is a voluntary, and didn't ask for any money, He instead asked to be the villain and for his character wear sunglasses all the time.
My take will probably be somewhat negative but here it is: As a Legion, I have some fundamental issues with the Legion Main Quest. Mainly that disregard's fue Caesar's Law are too blatant, even for a guy that wants to change the Legion. Female Centurion. Chems. Joshua Graham Worshipping. And giving Leggionaire's latitude to choose which parts of Caesar's Law to uphold. That is not the Legion. And that kills me There are very few mods that add Legion related content. So when The Frontier announced that they would a main Legion Quest I was hyped. The problem is that rather than adding actual nuance to the Legion, their idea of "nuance" was something along the lines of "See! They dont agree with Caesar in everything! They cant all be bad see!" which misses the point of the Legion's philosophy: Autarky, stability and adaptability. Why would they put a man that disagree s with Caesar in such a fundamental level in charge of anything?? The Legion's quest is leagues above its counterparts, but thats hardly a hardbar
Damn! I've been critical of some of the content within the mod that I've seen so far, but I was really hoping that unlike the NCR questline the legion path would be better. It was the only reason I was going to try the mod out honestly, but I'll give it a hard pass now. Even though I disagree with the Legion I'm craving a deeper look within them, and want to explore a greyer area of their philosophy if you will, or at least some more damn legion content.
@@modgoat2594 The legion is modelled after the Roman Empire, which (as you may know) was the gold standard for nation building for millenia. And never considered neither impractical nor alienating.
@@ZeriocTheTank It really pains me that apparently all the nuance that the modding community can afford to the legion is "making them less evil", or turn them into a completly different thing. I´ve working on a script that portrays how Legion Women and their communities would manage themselves away from the frontlines, modelled in actual roman history. I will probably publish it it some plataforms, perhaps it will inspire some modder to create some interesting Legion content.
@@miguellemir242 Instead of complaining the best thing for us to do is get into the game ourselves lol. I have a buddy of mine that I worked with IRL, and I've been wanting to contribute as well. Everyone tells me to do voice work, so I might as well see about I can do in regards of making a companion mod. There was always that part of me that wants to make a character dedicated to the legion, but because of all the content they removed (or never got around to in regards to this faction)it always felt like such a detriment to side with them. It'd be nice to have a few settlements further east to see how local areas are under legion control, or at least have a humanoid companion that's pro legion. There's just something about those lawful evil characters & factions that are intriguing to me.
Nice review! What killed it for me personally, was really bad writing. Even without knowing about the "harder" controversies, I noped out after first hour of the NCR campaign. If I am to subject myself to those levels of trope/cringe mix, I might as well read some fan-fic erotica elsewhere. When all the ugly stuff came out later, it wasn't even surprised. The mod is technically really well done (maps look phenomenal), but the direction (in a movie-making sense) was really amateurish.

How does it go "war war never changes" exrcuting prisoners is far from the worst war crimes real life is way more cruel as we know. @@lop90ful1 I get where Zenek is coming from. This was hyped up and worked on for years. We (the modding community) was told that this was a DLC level quality and size. It was in many ways but it failed in the (imo) most important, story and characters. It's a technically impressive mod with writing that is on-par with any other mod you can find on the net, I would say it falls bellow the other bigger New Vegas mods in terms of writing. I also was disappointing to see that the 1st 4~ hours of the main quest was just railroaded combat, which was never New Vegas's strong point.

A lot of the people who worked on the mod or helped out with it or just maintained the discord server were all pretty shitty. I give the mod more hate than praise due to this fact. Just because your mod turned out to be an absolute dumpster fire (after neglecting the fact that you should’ve had it tested) doesn’t give you the right to point back at the fan base and pull a “No u” kinda move. They’re clearly incapable of accepting their actions which shows just how mature the team making this mod is. This also further explains why it (in my opinion) sucks so hard.

well, there's cool side missions and a very well cared and detailed world to explore i think they did an alternate start sub mod, so you can hit it that way so it looks less scripted, i tell you, besides the main mission with the NCR , the world itself and missions is very good
Bro it felt like I was playing call of duty. To put it in perspective the only cod game that made me remember names was cod 2 and that's because the english campaign characters are memorable. But this? I was constantly thinking "who are you people?" Or "oh come on" when the legion bridge scene happened. Maybe it didn't help that i had a friend over discord watching the gameplay and laughing his ass off at this game but who knows. As far as I am concerned this mod is shite. At least the lizard genocide was fun and cars are fun but what else is there? The sisterhood of poorly modeled asian girls was boring and legion wasn't legion, just some perversion of caesars legion that he would burn to the ground given the chance. What a failure.
No, only the NCR main quest line is shit, because it was written by one guy who won't share any information to the rest of thr group. The other two main quest that was written around the NCR MQ and every other side quest is actually very great.

The other 2 were made by different people, they have very little relation to the NCR MQ writer, which is why they are so much better. Like what's the problems in the NCR MQ that the other 2 have ? 17:00 exactly. That NCR quest modder must learn to take the engines limitation into account. You only can stretch things so far until it breaks. Best example are those jump'n'run sections, which where so awful after several tries I used TCL. Seems a commen thing with modders. Enderal had the marketplace so stuffed with objects Skyrim would gurantee crash at some point. I have nothing against pushing an engine to its limit. Especially with modern hardware more things are possible than when the engine/game was released, but it is still important to know where to draw the line..

@@legionary3519 the section about video was about setpieces which lacks the spectacle of those pieces it tries to copy because the engine lacks the requirements to make that work. The jump 'n' run section for instance where on moving grounds. In gamebryo you easily float / fall by uneven ground thus you can't jump, which is in vanilla no issues and less notable because you just run as usual. Jumping just doesn't work. So if you have to make timed jumps on platforms which leads to those floating...
I think Enderal handled it way better, to be fair, even with bringing the game to it's limits. I only crashed a few times during several dozen hours, and that's saying something for Skyrim.
@@supergoodadvice853 the release version and the patches after were horrible. And I had a low end machine. Memory leaks or similiar are noticed earlier on such old pcs thus more crashing
@@Superschokokeks Yeah, that's your problem. Enderal wasn't made with low end machines in mind. I've played it on my PC for a very good amount of time, and haven't noticed a single issue in that regard.
I know I'm probably late but the whole hunter's lodge section is a reference to the book The Most Dangerous Game, where the main character (Rainsford, a master hunter) gets shipwrecked on an island owned by a Cossack general named Zaroff. Rainsford is invited to stay as a guest and hunt with him but refuses when Zaroff tries to convince him to hunt people for sport and becomes the hunted by the general.
sex/sexuality is a tool to tell a story just like violence and power, but when it is used purely to create a fantasy(power fantasies, violence fantasies, etc..), turns an otherwise okay or even good story in to a weirdness show.
I wasn't expecting a street map level of accuracy, but I kind of felt like the Portland setting is extremely underutilized. Other Fallout games will include local landmarks and locations and give them a *fallout* spin. It rarely snows in western oregon, and when it does people are usually super unprepared. The Frontier is waaaay too flat, Portland is vertical nightmare built into a river valley. Plus, there are no landmarks like the Zoo or Mt. Tabor. ALSO, Portland's metro is entirely above ground. The town is built into a cliffside, an underground metro is literally impossible. I legit wish they just said it took place in Alaska because that's clearly what they were thinking of when they built the area.
Exactly. They should've consulted someone who actually lives here or just changed the location. Portland is hardly flat by any means, maybe more on the east side but even then there's Rocky Butte and Mt Tabor. There's no landmarks so it's almost pointless to call it Portland. Plus the city is bisected by a river and has another river bordering the entire northern region and the highways are mostly found along the river. Any highway sections would be completely fucked in the city so cars in any sense wouldn't work for the area. Horses maybe make more sense, but definitely not cars. So sad because I have such a pretty hometown but this is stupid.
My take: it is a good mod, it's just that the main quests are mediocre at best. Worldspace is top notch and i played few side quest and they're good. The controversies could've been avoided if they keep their fetishes for themselves and those dang awful ripoffs be removed as they're all cringefest. They should've minimize the use of those ripoffs and reviewed all of the main storyline before putting it on gameplay.
I totally agree that the exploration is amazing and the content outside of the NCR main quest tends to be decent. Despite many of its flaws, it's still my best fallout experience since New Vegas. It's a shame that the guy who made the NCR questline is a genius in scripting but won't let anyone touch his writing. As a result, both the Crusader and legion questlines have to be written around the weakest part of the game.
Fetishes? uh.. where- the deathclaw one was supposed to be locked behind WW and it was entirely optional since you could also just run away from the thing or kill it, and besides that I can't really think of anything since the lizard people could be rehabilitated into a war-tribe instead of sex-crazed druggies and the america slave lines were pretty normal considering new vegas's base game content- cook-cook's whole side story with the missing people was way- way worse.
@@owo8996 Just because it's optional, it doesn't mean it's okay to put it into the mod for the whole world to see and for people who waited years for it. Also, do you think enslaving a barely legal, mentally ill girl with abandonment issues and exploiting her fear of abandonment and her mental health into your pretty much sex slave is normal? it's not. The difference between America and Cook-Cook is the writers and how they handled the topic. The Writers of New Vegas have a lot of experience with writing and dialogue and also have the know-how to handle those topics. The writing in the Frontier is sub-par at best and the writers for it just don't know how to handle those topics leading to its awful execution of it in the mod.
it's good to hear someone on youtube give this mod a fair shake, even if the story/writing is a bit naff, it's still going into my main loadout "A Tale of Many Wastelands", because not all mods can have the writing of say "Autumn Leaves", but there is just too much hard work and passion put into this mod to overlook.
Autumn leaves is just on another level, don't remember shit about it right now haha played it many years ago.. But I do remember finishing it and saying it was perhaps the best mod I ever played
I do appreciate that you’re willing to highlight all of the really good work that was done too. Massive endeavors like this are never perfect. A lot of really good work also went into this despite its many shortcomings.
If they didn't advertise this as lore friendly and make it look like it was going to be a legitimate expansion to the base game instead of the trash tier fanfic it was people wouldn't be so hard on it. They lied to peoples faces while making the mod a cringe fest with plagiarized missions, fetish content, and absurd technology that wouldn't be found even before the bombs dropped. Such a shame, the equipment looks great and the technical achievements on this decayed engine but will be lumped in with the shit.
I mean it sounds like a fair point. But even if your not into it but aware that a foot fetish is a thing. It might raise your eyebrow. Much like a picture of a clothed girl with her feet right up near the camera. Sure it’s not inherently sexual. But you get that the image is trying to excite those with that kind of proclivity.

meeting fisto and the reason why you were retrieving it was pretty funny though, not creepy and cringy. it also fit the atmosphere of a post apocalyptic vegas, you were finding prostitutes and helping the garretts with all sorts of random shit for their casino.
such a shame people don't know how to play caravan, it's a honestly cool game that makes so much sense in the apocalypse and it's amazing they added such in depth side things. doesn't take mroe than 15 minutes to learn if you put some effort in and it adds a lot imo.
From what I get about this video is that I need to steer clear and kill with fire the NCR questline and go with legion or crusaders for an enjoyable experience. Will give this mod a look since at the very least the technical details are amazing, like the best this engine can create.
@@mateoleisbravo5991 its pretty good, but its difficult to figure out how the endings change for me, with how the opinions of young joshua grahamchange for it. However, I did wish that the ncr exiles for this mod was just that - exiles. People subject and willing to change their ideologies to thrive in the area, like for example if you were able to find a group of enclave scientists that were trapped in archimedes 2 that you could say bring into the ncr fold and alter how people thought inside the ncr exiles, although, thats more of a personal thing and I dont know if anyone else would have an interest in it
@@mateoleisbravo5991 ehhhhhh, it changes too much in my opinion rather than improve on the mistakes of the original expansion/DLC, and there are really weird story bits and holes, and mixed voice acting.

From what I understand, Ray Chase is a great guy. In fact, even though he is a well known voice and could easily requested payment to use his voice in the mod, he did not make a penny from being included and has the best delivery in the game but is hard not to think that it is Noctis going off the deep end. XD

I appreciate someone who can see things objectively. My computer is already filled with gigabytes worth of Fallout 4 mods, so there was no way I could play Frontier for a while. One of the major points of hearing of the Frontier was solely the bad connotations shown off anywhere, and it was really easy to overlook the new NPCs, interesting quests and game mechanics, radio stations with original soundtrack, and new locations that so many people put into tons of hours. Thank you for making a video with concrete reasoning.
You did a great job on this video, but what I respect the most is that you actually formed your own opinion (which many people don't know is an educated impression of something, rather than just a biased feeling), presented it clearly, and managed to balance the good and the bad, all the while being fairly objective about it.
I'm glad someone actually talked about the mod. There's so much just flat out hate for the mod that I never got a feel for what it was. And you're right, most people only talk about NCR because they play that first and find it so god aweful they write off the whole mod as that. They never talk about setting, side content, or npc's or anything cool.
great vid, the mod is fun if you ignore the main story and just explore the world, it really has alot to offer its just a shame they let a few degens on the team but you can just skip over that, what was more disappointing to me was you couldn't kill anyone you like which was one of the cool things about nv
Yea, Devil'swish basically hijacked the NCR Storyline and refused any input from other writers He was a bit up his own ass, and it really made the NCR story the weakest

36:43 I'm guessing why most if not all of the Crusaders content is skipped on the snark playthroughs is because some of the lines actually land. I suppose that it was bound to happen in a mod written by multiple people who each have their own writing styles and senses of humor.

Played it recently, went straight for the Crusaders and ditched Call of NCR quest as soon as I could. The questline was ok, nothing to write home but it wasn't awful. I really liked the map, the locations and the atmosphere. The driveable cars are simply black magic.
The rescue mission for the Courier would have been better as you said pushed further back, and while I get they wanted to showcase the impressive scripting and what they could do with the gamebryo engine, would story wise make more sense if it was say just the wolfpack who goes in to rescue the Courier, a stealth mission where you eventually get caught and then they're fighting for their lives to escape, maybe some back up comes in to help them out when it goes loud as they try and get the courier and themselves out of there to reach the evac. Oh, and have the player do a few missions with Wolfpack prior as well. As it stands you meet two, of of who is a asshole to you and can optionally talk to two more in the camp who you might never notice or decide to talk to. It would help the player to care about them and feel bad about their sacrifice. Had a similar issue with Jackie in Cyberpunk, he seems like a cool guy but he gets so little screentime I found it hard to be really invested or sad to see him go.
Honestly that sort of mission is something best left for near the third to last mission in a story. This event would have been a great end cap to give the player some emotional investment into the end game missions. A waste of a complex setup really. As for Jackie, yeah, CD projekt red did him dirty. In fact most of the characters in cyberpunk were treated pretty bad, all sorts of nice personalities and characters, who were pretty much abandoned after 2 or 3 missions. Lots of wasted potential all around really.
@@FastForwardPlans eh, some like Vik and Misty or Jackie's mom got done dirty as well (not as bad as Jackie though who is especially such a important character to V personally) and could have used screentime. Character like Panam, Rogue, Kerry and Judy I think got enough. One thing I do think would have been cool would be to have had more interaction between them or jobs where V works with multiple. Like a job for Judy that requires say a good sharpshooter who knows the badlands so you get Panam involved as well.
@@quantras2673 Yeah that's what I mean, I get that running solo is easier for them to program, but I would have loved some character interaction outside of their main quest lines. Something to make them feel more alive. We got a little through text, but its like the creators forgot that they had that texting and calling thing because its also almost never used outside of sending details for side gigs and cars for sale.
Right. While I personally like the game for the side quests and Crusader weapon and armor designs, The NCR main question part 1 made no sense. Although a level 50 courier would have many legends about him, they are rumor not fact until he proves himself in Portland. Why they would risk half their army for one many makes no sense.

What I dislike about FTF is not the controversial matter or even bad writing, but those scripted death, long unescapable scripted event and play as other character for very long time
There were a whole lot more stolen assets. Like the Doom 3 pentagram and the armor that the one doctor wears in the Legion plotline has its shoulders stolen from the Halo ODST armor.
Again some false accusations. The doom penta texture was a leftover we removed asap. and the armor has been modelled by one of us. (inspired , yes, ripped, no)
@@TheFrontier yeah, an inspired 1:1 clone is still "ripped" despite the origin being different for the armor pauldrons. It doesn't speak well to creative direction as a whole.
I think I saw a comment that said this same thing, but I have to say that my biggest tick with this mod is the Legion questline. While the mod looks absolutely stunning and the story’s pretty good, the Northern Legion just...doesn’t feel like the Legion. Valerius doesn’t like Caesar, which is very strange in and of itself. Caesar’s subordinates are fiercely loyal to him. While I can understand why a detached sect like the NL maybe could get away with such ideals, it didn’t really make sense to me. All in all though, Frontier has earned itself a permanent place in my load order alongside New California simply because how well done it is. I personally don’t mind the story, unlike a lot of people, and the map is fun to explore. My favorite portion has to be the armor, the Legion and Crusaders in particular. I’m gonna give this mod a solid 9/10.
@@Lorenzo_I. Because no one communicated with each other. Poor communication means your mod is doomed from the start. Hell, lack of communication in any project will severely cripple the team. Why and how the mod was even released is still a mystery I have yet to solve.
@@Number1Rival They probably had weaker communication because its a passion project and a non profit mod, so people are working on what they want, when they want. Only recently have I seen large mods actually start to act like a real dev team (like the Beyond skyrim development teams).
@@fuzzydunlop7928 No, but I do know that bad communication can ruin anything. Including a mod. It wasn't just bad communication but also seemingly, lack of a central idea as well as all the ripped sequences add to the mod's failures. There is a good story there but where there is a good story beat, there is about 1 or more plot holes that make that plot beat a mess. The Legion route for example starts off with one. You would think that, as Ceaser's elite Assasin whom by the way killed Kimball, you would be known as such. However, the Legion troops that capture you on the bridge regard you as "The Courier, we know about your exploits" as if you're NCR. You would think Legion Soldiers would know there own men, including one of there spies, from NCR or The NCR Exiles. But no, you have to pass a speech check. Also, the Legion quest is also messed up because of Rancor. He demands you get the C-Finder. If you turn him down, he basically goes "ok, but go get me the C-Finder." You have no choice but to get it and even if you do get it for the Legion. They won't use it in the final battle to destroy The Exiles even though, if you do the route where you don't depose the Legate, they would be willing to use the Death Satellite that could wipe out there enemy without minimal loss of life on there end.
Finally a fair review! Say what you want, but I really enjoyed the Frontier! The exploration, resource management, combat, vehicles, scripting- kill me, I just liked it all. I mean I had to tgm through some horror quests as I don't like those in general, but i still appreciated the artism. And when it goes to Blackthorne and writing- I honestly thought that Blackthorne was simply insane, made a ridiculously stupid decision and I had to live with his mistake. To be honest I've read this as deliberate and morally complex- how much responsibility do you have over some dude being a complete idiot for your sake and saving you in the process? Unfortunately it's my headcannon and a side effect of turning bad into good. In the end it's a pretty good game, but things where it shines are not the main storylines, but world building and exploration.

I really enjoyed the mod and I just finished it, I agree with most of what you said but I have only played legion questline, I thought the legion characters were done well, I didn’t like the ending section due to performance where it was 30-10 fps until where the end when I betrayed valerius and the ending slideshow didn’t make sense as if the legion can’t survive without out him and if courier betrayed him it just destroyed the legion even though he could of easily been the leader of the northern legion. The bugs also kind of ruined the mod for me and the many crashes and fuck those stupid 20 fps snowstorms.

Well they can still gut the mod. Take the weapons and add them to New Vegas and give it to the appropriate npcs/faction. Add/replace the Brotherhood and Legion armor. I never cited with Legion(base game) but this armor might change my mind. And just move over the tanks and cars.

Frontier dev here (Legion Lead), and I've got to say, this is a fantastic review, it was really entertaining and all of your critiques about the main quests were all on point. Everything said about the Trochili has been said already. As for Mae, all of her sex stuff was meant as a joke, but it obviously didn't carry well and with the context of "the person who shall not be named" those lines were no longer appropriate and I had them removed. I'm glad you enjoyed the rest of my content regardless (Legion and Side Quests included) I hope you make more great reviews!

If there is one thing I would have liked in Fallout, is vehicles. You could drive a car in 2, and seeing that again would have been nice. The level design would have to be a bit different, cleaner so you can move. Even if there's no vehicle combat (probably would be too jank to have) just using them as transport would be decent....or, maybe you can only fast travel, when you have a car. Probably the easier option.
Cars just wouldn't work in this setting because its Portland. In reality the city is hilly and there's so many rivers that cross through major sections of the city that the roads would have deteriorated into nothingness. This really isn't reflected in the mod. Sure, you might say, but offroading is a thing. My response would be in mostly flat places it would be very practical. But portland pre-war is full of trees. Trees + hills + deteriorated roads due to natural decay would be impossible and impractical for the setting if we're trying to be realistic. Because most of the "city" the towers and downtown is on the west side of the river and there is literally no way to get to that area of town without crossing a river. The bridges definitely would not have held up and there's 12 of them 😂 plus the west side is mountainous as hell and forested completely outside the three or so miles of city. Portland is lowkey a terrible location for a fallout game.
He also screwed up. You can enslave A kid. That being Bumble, but you can't enslave KIDS from Little Lamplight or enslave them for yourself. You can buy the kids from Eulogy but you won't get them as slaves as you'll be forced to set the free for the main quest. The only slaves you get are Charon and Clover. Charon in the form of a contract and Clover is bought from Eulogy. If he is going to compare slavery in the Frontier to any Fallout, it should've been Fallout 1, 2, or New Vegas, the game the mod was made for. Fallout 3 doesn't go into the cruelty of being a slave like Obsidian and Black Isle's Fallout's did. Neither does 4. Then again, it seems the original Frontier dev's where inspired more off of Fallout 3's writing and design rather than New Vegas's because that makes all the sense.

Just naming the guy 'Rancor' could have been a better idea, while in the legion campaign you aren't told who he is and just given a description (bald and with glasses, for example) to find him. And I got the silly idea that instead of the exiles not knowing who the spy is, they actually know that Tiberius is obviously a spy. So they made him second in command to keep an eye on him and feed the guy false info. So everyone knows he is an enemy, they just don't know how deep his plans actually are.
The comparation with the robot doesn't seem fair. Fisto is clearly a joke within new vegas. The deathclaw thing MAY have worked as a funny moment on it's own, but within the mountain of horny that this mod is... it just strikes me as fucking weird.

Don't lie to yourself, you know very well this mod is a colossal failure when it turns away from it's actual lore and begins to call itself "fallout" when everything in the mod strays further and further away from following the Fallout Series itself. It just becomes another cliché game made to appeal to the fantasies of the weirdos and the degenerates and ultimately turns down the support of the hardcore fallout fans.
My honest opinion of the mod, having played through the majority of it, can be summed up with two lines. Wow, they actually got all this working? Wow, they really shouldn't have bothered. The vehicles worked by the most technical definition of the term but the map wasn't made for them, most of the NPC controlled ones are just a pain and the turrets are equally fucked like the cannon that's 5m from the enemy so any attempt to use it kills you or the vertibird minigun that fires a metre to the left of where you're aiming. Weapons are pretty fucked as they're either mechanically shit, awkward to use or dreadful to find ammo for meaning you're often left plinking with some shitty rifle that can barely shoot straight. Also don't attempt melee, it's just not worth it. I had to attempt the Helios One flashback three times to get it to function properly. I couldn't watch any of the cutscenes because it'd ask if I wanted to skip every milisecond I spent watching them until I skipped. Set pieces were usually just "sit still and do fuck all for a bit" or "move around and do fuck all for a bit" Dialogue was serviceable at best And I personally loathe what they did to the loading wheel.
The lore friendliness wouldn't have been an issue if the mod didn't label itself as such. That being said, the mod is impressive mechanically and has some really good ideas. A shame that the NCR writer decided to be stubborn with the story. Never leave it one writer

From our conversation, he seems like a pretty okay guy, so I think it is time to let go of past and atleast stop hunting him down. I am not endorsing anything he drew back then, but it seems like all of that is in the past, so I think it is time we let it go aswell. I was a VA on this mod and the dude that wrote the NCR campaign wrote everything independent of the other team. He refused to share his script and was semi difficult ult to work with. Thats what I heard anyway. So hopefully that cleared some things up

The term you're looking for might be 'canon', because yeah, mods aren't canon - but the term 'lore friendly' is used to distinguish mods that could fit into the established lore from mods that could not, because there are a lot of players who care about lore consistency and find that lore-unfriendly stuff breaks their immersion, but who still want to use mods.

That's the main reason for me never installing it. I could just ignore the cringe of fucked up stuff, but I like to play my playthroghs as serious stories. In my first playthrogh on pc I did install many wacky stuff just cause I wanted to test playing with mods, but still, even there it were just small stuff that could be easily explained somehow without breaking too much lore, unlike the enclave having a super futuristic spaceship that shoots lazers with a name written in neon lights outside.

My take will probably be somewhat negative but here it is: As a Legion, I have some fundamental issues with the Legion Main Quest. Mainly that disregard's fue Caesar's Law are too blatant, even for a guy that wants to change the Legion.
Female Centurion. Chems. Joshua Graham Worshipping. And giving Leggionaire's latitude to choose which parts of Caesar's Law to uphold. That is not the Legion. And that kills me
There are very few mods that add Legion related content. So when The Frontier announced that they would a main Legion Quest I was hyped. The problem is that rather than adding actual nuance to the Legion, their idea of "nuance" was something along the lines of "See! They dont agree with Caesar in everything! They cant all be bad see!" which misses the point of the Legion's philosophy: Autarky, stability and adaptability.
Why would they put a man that disagree s with Caesar in such a fundamental level in charge of anything?? The Legion's quest is leagues above its counterparts, but thats hardly a hardbar
Damn! I've been critical of some of the content within the mod that I've seen so far, but I was really hoping that unlike the NCR questline the legion path would be better. It was the only reason I was going to try the mod out honestly, but I'll give it a hard pass now. Even though I disagree with the Legion I'm craving a deeper look within them, and want to explore a greyer area of their philosophy if you will, or at least some more damn legion content.

There was always that part of me that wants to make a character dedicated to the legion, but because of all the content they removed (or never got around to in regards to this faction)it always felt like such a detriment to side with them. It'd be nice to have a few settlements further east to see how local areas are under legion control, or at least have a humanoid companion that's pro legion. Nice review! What killed it for me personally, was really bad writing. Even without knowing about the "harder" controversies, I noped out after first hour of the NCR campaign. If I am to subject myself to those levels of trope/cringe mix, I might as well read some fan-fic erotica elsewhere. When all the ugly stuff came out later, it wasn't even surprised.
The mod is technically really well done (maps look phenomenal), but the direction (in a movie-making sense) was really amateurish.

@@lop90ful1 I get where Zenek is coming from. This was hyped up and worked on for years. We (the modding community) was told that this was a DLC level quality and size. It was in many ways but it failed in the (imo) most important, story and characters. It's a technically impressive mod with writing that is on-par with any other mod you can find on the net, I would say it falls bellow the other bigger New Vegas mods in terms of writing.
I also was disappointing to see that the 1st 4~ hours of the main quest was just railroaded combat, which was never New Vegas's strong point.

exactly. That NCR quest modder must learn to take the engines limitation into account. You only can stretch things so far until it breaks. Best example are those jump'n'run sections, which where so awful after several tries I used TCL. Seems a commen thing with modders. Enderal had the marketplace so stuffed with objects Skyrim would gurantee crash at some point. I have nothing against pushing an engine to its limit. Especially with modern hardware more things are possible than when the engine/game was released, but it is still important to know where to draw the line..

@@legionary3519 the section about video was about setpieces which lacks the spectacle of those pieces it tries to copy because the engine lacks the requirements to make that work.
The jump 'n' run section for instance where on moving grounds. In gamebryo you easily float / fall by uneven ground thus you can't jump, which is in vanilla no issues and less notable because you just run as usual. Jumping just doesn't work. So if you have to make timed jumps on platforms which leads to those floating...
I think Enderal handled it way better, to be fair, even with bringing the game to it's limits. I only crashed a few times during several dozen hours, and that's saying something for Skyrim.

And I had a low end machine. Memory leaks or similiar are noticed earlier on such old pcs thus more crashing

I know I'm probably late but the whole hunter's lodge section is a reference to the book The Most Dangerous Game, where the main character (Rainsford, a master hunter) gets shipwrecked on an island owned by a Cossack general named Zaroff. Rainsford is invited to stay as a guest and hunt with him but refuses when Zaroff tries to convince him to hunt people for sport and becomes the hunted by the general.
sex/sexuality is a tool to tell a story just like violence and power, but when it is used purely to create a fantasy(power fantasies, violence fantasies, etc..), turns an otherwise okay or even good story in to a weirdness show.
I wasn't expecting a street map level of accuracy, but I kind of felt like the Portland setting is extremely underutilized. Other Fallout games will include local landmarks and locations and give them a *fallout* spin.
It rarely snows in western oregon, and when it does people are usually super unprepared. The Frontier is waaaay too flat, Portland is vertical nightmare built into a river valley. Plus, there are no landmarks like the Zoo or Mt. Tabor. ALSO, Portland's metro is entirely above ground. The town is built into a cliffside, an underground metro is literally impossible.
I legit wish they just said it took place in Alaska because that's clearly what they were thinking of when they built the area.

Portland is hardly flat by any means, maybe more on the east side but even then there's Rocky Butte and Mt Tabor. There's no landmarks so it's almost pointless to call it Portland. Plus the city is bisected by a river and has another river bordering the entire northern region and the highways are mostly found along the river. Any highway sections would be completely fucked in the city so cars in any sense wouldn't work for the area. Horses maybe make more sense, but definitely not cars.
So sad because I have such a pretty hometown but this is stupid.

My take: it is a good mod, it's just that the main quests are mediocre at best. Worldspace is top notch and i played few side quest and they're good. The controversies could've been avoided if they keep their fetishes for themselves and those dang awful ripoffs be removed as they're all cringefest. They should've minimize the use of those ripoffs and reviewed all of the main storyline before putting it on gameplay.
I totally agree that the exploration is amazing and the content outside of the NCR main quest tends to be decent. Despite many of its flaws, it's still my best fallout experience since New Vegas. It's a shame that the guy who made the NCR questline is a genius in scripting but won't let anyone touch his writing. As a result, both the Crusader and legion questlines have to be written around the weakest part of the game.
Fetishes? uh.. where- the deathclaw one was supposed to be locked behind WW and it was entirely optional since you could also just run away from the thing or kill it, and besides that I can't really think of anything since the lizard people could be rehabilitated into a war-tribe instead of sex-crazed druggies and the america slave lines were pretty normal considering new vegas's base game content- cook-cook's whole side story with the missing people was way- way worse.

The difference between America and Cook-Cook is the writers and how they handled the topic. The Writers of New Vegas have a lot of experience with writing and dialogue and also have the know-how to handle those topics. The writing in the Frontier is sub-par at best and the writers for it just don't know how to handle those topics leading to its awful execution of it in the mod.

it's good to hear someone on youtube give this mod a fair shake, even if the story/writing is a bit naff, it's still going into my main loadout "A Tale of Many Wastelands", because not all mods can have the writing of say "Autumn Leaves", but there is just too much hard work and passion put into this mod to overlook.
Autumn leaves is just on another level, don't remember shit about it right now haha played it many years ago.. But I do remember finishing it and saying it was perhaps the best mod I ever played

They lied to peoples faces while making the mod a cringe fest with plagiarized missions, fetish content, and absurd technology that wouldn't be found even before the bombs dropped. Such a shame, the equipment looks great and the technical achievements on this decayed engine but will be lumped in with the shit.

meeting fisto and the reason why you were retrieving it was pretty funny though, not creepy and cringy. it also fit the atmosphere of a post apocalyptic vegas, you were finding prostitutes and helping the garretts with all sorts of random shit for their casino.
such a shame people don't know how to play caravan, it's a honestly cool game that makes so much sense in the apocalypse and it's amazing they added such in depth side things. doesn't take mroe than 15 minutes to learn if you put some effort in and it adds a lot imo.

However, I did wish that the ncr exiles for this mod was just that - exiles. People subject and willing to change their ideologies to thrive in the area, like for example if you were able to find a group of enclave scientists that were trapped in archimedes 2 that you could say bring into the ncr fold and alter how people thought inside the ncr exiles, although, thats more of a personal thing and I dont know if anyone else would have an interest in it

From what I understand, Ray Chase is a great guy. In fact, even though he is a well known voice and could easily requested payment to use his voice in the mod, he did not make a penny from being included and has the best delivery in the game but is hard not to think that it is Noctis going off the deep end. I appreciate someone who can see things objectively. My computer is already filled with gigabytes worth of Fallout 4 mods, so there was no way I could play Frontier for a while. One of the major points of hearing of the Frontier was solely the bad connotations shown off anywhere, and it was really easy to overlook the new NPCs, interesting quests and game mechanics, radio stations with original soundtrack, and new locations that so many people put into tons of hours. Thank you for making a video with concrete reasoning.

I'm glad someone actually talked about the mod. There's so much just flat out hate for the mod that I never got a feel for what it was. And you're right, most people only talk about NCR because they play that first and find it so god aweful they write off the whole mod as that. They never talk about setting, side content, or npc's or anything cool.

36:43 I'm guessing why most if not all of the Crusaders content is skipped on the snark playthroughs is because some of the lines actually land. I suppose that it was bound to happen in a mod written by multiple people who each have their own writing styles and senses of humor.

Played it recently, went straight for the Crusaders and ditched Call of NCR quest as soon as I could. The questline was ok, nothing to write home but it wasn't awful. I really liked the map, the locations and the atmosphere. The driveable cars are simply black magic.
The rescue mission for the Courier would have been better as you said pushed further back, and while I get they wanted to showcase the impressive scripting and what they could do with the gamebryo engine, would story wise make more sense if it was say just the wolfpack who goes in to rescue the Courier, a stealth mission where you eventually get caught and then they're fighting for their lives to escape, maybe some back up comes in to help them out when it goes loud as they try and get the courier and themselves out of there to reach the evac.
Oh, and have the player do a few missions with Wolfpack prior as well. As it stands you meet two, of of who is a asshole to you and can optionally talk to two more in the camp who you might never notice or decide to talk to. It would help the player to care about them and feel bad about their sacrifice. Had a similar issue with Jackie in Cyberpunk, he seems like a cool guy but he gets so little screentime I found it hard to be really invested or sad to see him go.
Honestly that sort of mission is something best left for near the third to last mission in a story. This event would have been a great end cap to give the player some emotional investment into the end game missions. A waste of a complex setup really.
As for Jackie, yeah, CD projekt red did him dirty. In fact most of the characters in cyberpunk were treated pretty bad, all sorts of nice personalities and characters, who were pretty much abandoned after 2 or 3 missions. Lots of wasted potential all around really.
@@FastForwardPlans eh, some like Vik and Misty or Jackie's mom got done dirty as well (not as bad as Jackie though who is especially such a important character to V personally) and could have used screentime. Character like Panam, Rogue, Kerry and Judy I think got enough. One thing I do think would have been cool would be to have had more interaction between them or jobs where V works with multiple. Like a job for Judy that requires say a good sharpshooter who knows the badlands so you get Panam involved as well.

Something to make them feel more alive. We got a little through text, but its like the creators forgot that they had that texting and calling thing because its also almost never used outside of sending details for side gigs and cars for sale.
Right. While I personally like the game for the side quests and Crusader weapon and armor designs, The NCR main question part 1 made no sense. Although a level 50 courier would have many legends about him, they are rumor not fact until he proves himself in Portland. Why they would risk half their army for one many makes no sense.

What I dislike about FTF is not the controversial matter or even bad writing, but those scripted death, long unescapable scripted event and play as other character for very long time
There were a whole lot more stolen assets. Like the Doom 3 pentagram and the armor that the one doctor wears in the Legion plotline has its shoulders stolen from the Halo ODST armor.
Again some false accusations. The doom penta texture was a leftover we removed asap. and the armor has been modelled by one of us. (inspired , yes, ripped, no)
@@TheFrontier yeah, an inspired 1:1 clone is still "ripped" despite the origin being different for the armor pauldrons. It doesn't speak well to creative direction as a whole.
I think I saw a comment that said this same thing, but I have to say that my biggest tick with this mod is the Legion questline. While the mod looks absolutely stunning and the story’s pretty good, the Northern Legion just...doesn’t feel like the Legion. Valerius doesn’t like Caesar, which is very strange in and of itself. Caesar’s subordinates are fiercely loyal to him. While I can understand why a detached sect like the NL maybe could get away with such ideals, it didn’t really make sense to me. All in all though, Frontier has earned itself a permanent place in my load order alongside New California simply because how well done it is. I personally don’t mind the story, unlike a lot of people, and the map is fun to explore. My favorite portion has to be the armor, the Legion and Crusaders in particular. I’m gonna give this mod a solid 9/10.

It wasn't just bad communication but also seemingly, lack of a central idea as well as all the ripped sequences add to the mod's failures. There is a good story there but where there is a good story beat, there is about 1 or more plot holes that make that plot beat a mess. The Legion route for example starts off with one. You would think that, as Ceaser's elite Assasin whom by the way killed Kimball, you would be known as such. However, the Legion troops that capture you on the bridge regard you as "The Courier, we know about your exploits" as if you're NCR. You would think Legion Soldiers would know there own men, including one of there spies, from NCR or The NCR Exiles. But no, you have to pass a speech check. Also, the Legion quest is also messed up because of Rancor. He demands you get the C-Finder. If you turn him down, he basically goes "ok, but go get me the C-Finder." You have no choice but to get it and even if you do get it for the Legion. They won't use it in the final battle to destroy The Exiles even though, if you do the route where you don't depose the Legate, they would be willing to use the Death Satellite that could wipe out there enemy without minimal loss of life on there end.
Finally a fair review! Say what you want, but I really enjoyed the Frontier! The exploration, resource management, combat, vehicles, scripting- kill me, I just liked it all. I mean I had to tgm through some horror quests as I don't like those in general, but i still appreciated the artism.
And when it goes to Blackthorne and writing- I honestly thought that Blackthorne was simply insane, made a ridiculously stupid decision and I had to live with his mistake. To be honest I've read this as deliberate and morally complex- how much responsibility do you have over some dude being a complete idiot for your sake and saving you in the process? Unfortunately it's my headcannon and a side effect of turning bad into good.
In the end it's a pretty good game, but things where it shines are not the main storylines, but world building and exploration.

I really enjoyed the mod and I just finished it, I agree with most of what you said but I have only played legion questline, I thought the legion characters were done well, I didn’t like the ending section due to performance where it was 30-10 fps until where the end when I betrayed valerius and the ending slideshow didn’t make sense as if the legion can’t survive without out him and if courier betrayed him it just destroyed the legion even though he could of easily been the leader of the northern legion. The bugs also kind of ruined the mod for me and the many crashes and fuck those stupid 20 fps snowstorms.

Well they can still gut the mod. Take the weapons and add them to New Vegas and give it to the appropriate npcs/faction. Add/replace the Brotherhood and Legion armor. I never cited with Legion(base game) but this armor might change my mind. And just move over the tanks and cars.

Frontier dev here (Legion Lead), and I've got to say, this is a fantastic review, it was really entertaining and all of your critiques about the main quests were all on point. Everything said about the Trochili has been said already. As for Mae, all of her sex stuff was meant as a joke, but it obviously didn't carry well and with the context of "the person who shall not be named" those lines were no longer appropriate and I had them removed. I'm glad you enjoyed the rest of my content regardless (Legion and Side Quests included) I hope you make more great reviews!

If there is one thing I would have liked in Fallout, is vehicles. You could drive a car in 2, and seeing that again would have been nice. The level design would have to be a bit different, cleaner so you can move. Even if there's no vehicle combat (probably would be too jank to have) just using them as transport would be decent....or, maybe you can only fast travel, when you have a car. Probably the easier option.
Cars just wouldn't work in this setting because its Portland.
In reality the city is hilly and there's so many rivers that cross through major sections of the city that the roads would have deteriorated into nothingness. This really isn't reflected in the mod. Sure, you might say, but offroading is a thing. My response would be in mostly flat places it would be very practical. But portland pre-war is full of trees. Trees + hills + deteriorated roads due to natural decay would be impossible and impractical for the setting if we're trying to be realistic. Because most of the "city" the towers and downtown is on the west side of the river and there is literally no way to get to that area of town without crossing a river. The bridges definitely would not have held up and there's 12 of them 😂 plus the west side is mountainous as hell and forested completely outside the three or so miles of city. Portland is lowkey a terrible location for a fallout game.

He also screwed up. You can enslave A kid. That being Bumble, but you can't enslave KIDS from Little Lamplight or enslave them for yourself. You can buy the kids from Eulogy but you won't get them as slaves as you'll be forced to set the free for the main quest. The only slaves you get are Charon and Clover. Charon in the form of a contract and Clover is bought from Eulogy. If he is going to compare slavery in the Frontier to any Fallout, it should've been Fallout 1, 2, or New Vegas, the game the mod was made for. Fallout 3 doesn't go into the cruelty of being a slave like Obsidian and Black Isle's Fallout's did. Neither does 4. Then again, it seems the original Frontier dev's where inspired more off of Fallout 3's writing and design rather than New Vegas's because that makes all the sense.

Just naming the guy 'Rancor' could have been a better idea, while in the legion campaign you aren't told who he is and just given a description (bald and with glasses, for example) to find him.
And I got the silly idea that instead of the exiles not knowing who the spy is, they actually know that Tiberius is obviously a spy. So they made him second in command to keep an eye on him and feed the guy false info. So everyone knows he is an enemy, they just don't know how deep his plans actually are.
The comparation with the robot doesn't seem fair. Fisto is clearly a joke within new vegas. The deathclaw thing MAY have worked as a funny moment on it's own, but within the mountain of horny that this mod is... it just strikes me as fucking weird.
I mean they tried, but on the first CoD4 cutscene on the bridge I just lost it and knew it's going downhill storywise.

Don't lie to yourself, you know very well this mod is a colossal failure when it turns away from it's actual lore and begins to call itself "fallout" when everything in the mod strays further and further away from following the Fallout Series itself. It just becomes another cliché game made to appeal to the fantasies of the weirdos and the degenerates and ultimately turns down the support of the hardcore fallout fans.
I personally love exploring the new wasteland and all the new weapons but main story could be a lot better
My honest opinion of the mod, having played through the majority of it, can be summed up with two lines.

The vehicles worked by
the most technical definition of the term but the map wasn't made for
them, most of the NPC controlled ones are just a pain and the turrets
are equally fucked like the cannon that's 5m from the enemy so any
attempt to use it kills you or the vertibird minigun that fires a metre
to the left of where you're aiming.
Weapons are pretty fucked as
they're either mechanically shit, awkward to use or dreadful to find
ammo for meaning you're often left plinking with some shitty rifle that
can barely shoot straight. Also don't attempt melee, it's just not worth
it.
I had to attempt the Helios One flashback three times to get it to function properly.
I
couldn't watch any of the cutscenes because it'd ask if I wanted to
skip every milisecond I spent watching them until I skipped.
Set pieces were usually just "sit still and do fuck all for a bit" or "move around and do fuck all for a bit"
Dialogue was serviceable at best
And I personally loathe what they did to the loading wheel.
In short, the developers were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
The lore friendliness wouldn't have been an issue if the mod didn't label itself as such. That being said, the mod is impressive mechanically and has some really good ideas. A shame that the NCR writer decided to be stubborn with the story. Never leave it one writer
