WESTERN STATES 100: Clare Gallagher and Jim Walmsley, 2019 Champions

- Your 2019 Western States champions are now crowned, Clare Gallagher and Jim Walmsley. On a nearly perfect weather day to run fast on the Western States course, Jim Walmsley broke his own course record, even though it was a higher snow year in the Sierras. Jim Walmsley of Flagstaff Arizona reclaims his victory of 2018, going back to back for the first time since Rob Krar, also of Flagstaff. Jim Walmsley had a very strong day from start to finish, but so did his roommate Jared Hazen, running the second fastest time ever on the Western States 100 course, and beating Jim’s course record time from last year (warm weather year in 2018). Overall the men’s race lived up to the hype at the 2019 Western States 100, with UK ultra runner, Tom Evans, who runs for Adidas, coming in a very strong third place behind Jared Hazen and Jim Walmsley. On the women’s side of the Western States 100 race, it was really Courtney Dauwalter’s race to lose, as she is the 2018 champion and holds the second fastest time on the Western States course. It was not Courtney’s year, as early reports are showing a leg injury for the past champ. Last I saw Courtney Dauwalter at Forest Hill she was top ten overall in the race, men and women. With Courtney Dauwalter dropping from the race, it turned to Clare Gallagher to take over and push to the finish for the victory. This is Clare Gallagher’s first victory at the Western States 100. My favorite clip was Jim’s finish! He looked so happy and was really engaged with the crowd, and then he punched right through that finishing tape like a boss!💪🏼🤠
Favourite shot was when Jim came down from the snowy spot and lost balance there for a second, because this shows how epic of an effort these guys are putting on there, trailrunning is not just straight forward running, a lot of things can happen in between.
