I smiled the whole time watching this. So glad to see the man who was the heart and soul of the band for over a decade, fanboy over this box along with us. Props to the guys for making this happen!
Wow, Jason's attention to detail on when so many promotional pictures were taken really shows more than ever how much he cherished his time in the band. It's impressive that he remembers the minor stuff from 30 years ago when the band was at their commercial peak and there was so much going on at the time, yet he could still take it all in. Rock on Jason.
Remembering all those details shows you this guy was very present and switched on everyday. It wasn’t all a haze that was taken for granted. He showed up everyday and gave it his all. I miss his presence and energy!
It's clear to see Jason was a fan who got to play with his favorite band, and even after his departure by his own request, he remains a fan. The man is pure class in my book.
That definitely wasn't too long, could have listened to Jason talk for hours about the old days. Saw the Orchard Park show at age 17 in 1992. Faith No More/Gunz/Metallica. Best show I've ever seen in my life. BY FAR. One of the first (of many many many) times I saw you guys live. Thanks for this!!!! Great to see Jason!
I saw that tour in Montreal, the infamous pyro accident. After several hours wait, the gunners took the stage, but then cut their set short due to Axl being a crybaby. As every good Montreal always does, riots ensued!! lol
Hearing how genuine and humble Jason is almost makes me tear up. I hope he's going to the 40th anniversary show. Would love to see him play live with the guys again!
Metallica is coming to him I think. They are playing in Florida in his town and I hope he joins them for one of the nights. Hopefully he plays Sad But True and Blackened. 🤘🤘
Jason's absence from Metallica is an absence of humility, integrity, respect and appreciation. Thank you Jason for being all those things, and more...still!
Jason! So glad to see you're including him in this. He's such a humble guy, and an key player in many of us fans' eyes. (Don't tell anyone, but he's my favorite Metallica bass player, he's the one I grew up with)
Yeah, he's such a likeable guy and a great player. And he's so immensely proud to be part of the world's biggest band. And I mean absolutely no disrespect to Cliff and Rob who are superb players as well.
My favorite too, I know Jason and the band have cleared the air and are on good terms; friends again, but I still feel lile there is nothing they can do to make up for the shit they put him through. Ahh well let bygones be bygones I suppose.
It took me a second to realize it was Jason. It is so cool that he is on good terms with the band. You rarely see that when someone leaves. Plus his memory is perfect for doing a review like this.
lol me too. When I saw the thumbnail thought it was Lars. But played the video & voice was off. Then he looked up ...and asked 'how's it going', it's cool moments like these that make every day life tolerable anymore.
This unboxing was special in so many ways (glad they included Jason). Can't recall how many Metallica concerts I went to back in the day but I remember how Jason would make time after every show to meet fans who at the time, knowingly hung around after the gig. The guy was truly down to earth then, and is still that same guy now (older but even more wiser). I know he mentioned in various interviews that his body can no longer handle the demanding (by Metallica standards) rigors of touring... but boy would I go back into that late 80's through mid-90's mode when I flew all over the place to watch them, to see Jason do a short "reunion" with them while they all still can.
This was great having Jason unboxing this after his amazing work on the album. Thank you Jason for your amazing work with the band, and for your amazing work outside of Metallica as well.
I remember when this box set was announced, and the first thing I had said was that they should let Jason do the unboxing for this. To see this come to fruition is something exciting. This was the album that introduced me to MetallicA. After that, I was hooked. I was fortunate to have met Jason a couple times, and it was always a great experience. I’ve always had the utmost respect for him. He was always kind to us fans, and never forgot the people who made the train run at full speed. I cannot wait for September 10 to get here.
@@SuperSnakePlissken For that, James had better be thankful every day, for the rest of his life, that Jason was too big of a person to do what anyone else would have done, which is to pound his face repeatedly.

Thank you Jason. You are the heart and soul of Metallica and it just hasn't been the same since you left. We will always appreciate the energy, love and passion you brought to Metallica.
I was so upset, for literally years, after Jason left Metallica. He was easily the member I most closely related to. I understood then, and more so now, his reasons for his departure but it didn't make it easier. It was like Mom and Dad getting a divorce. So happy to see he looks back on it all rather fondly and that his relationship with the other guys has been for the most part mended. Metallica was quite literally the soundtrack to my adolescence. Thanks for doing this video Jason. You're still the fucking man!
He was the only one that felt like he cared about the fans. By the black album it felt like Metallica was trying to complete with Guns and Roses so they all became douche bags accept Jason.
Jason is so relatable as a true Metallica fan! He was an ultimate fan, that received an amazing opportunity. We all lived vicariously through him... I'm so happy he was the one to do the unboxing!! 🖤
Jason is a Beast. Loved his energy and his backup vocals. In an odd way, him leaving may have saved Metallica in the long run. Will always be a Metallica Metal God.
Classy and very cool touch from the band to allow Jason to promote this....he was a major player on their greatest album and they realise that...I’m sure Jason got a massive kick out of this..total respect to the guys and shows that we’re all mellowing as we enter maturity ....hey, but we can still crank that shit up to 11 though....✊✊
i had the tape doomsday for the deceiver, theres a bass solo on that w the drums accompanying. i was in middle school about to start 8th grade when this album came out. everything was changing so fast. my friend called and said the new metallica albums good, james actually sings (unforgiven). the early 90s is when metal became pop.
I was very fortunate to have been introduced to Metallica in the early 1980s. ‘83 to be exact. And living just a few hours from the Bay Area, we felt they were local and just like us. I remember when Jason was in Flotsam & Jetsam. I still have the Doomsday album. When he joined Metallica, it was a good fit. The guy is a badass bass player and a fan. Class. Nice to see this.
Jason walking away from Metallica has to have been the most difficult decision he has ever made to this day. That must have taken some built up pain and hurt to make that move. The black album was my introduction to Metallica...and Jason has always been the only bassists i grew up with during Metallica era! Much love and this unboxing really brought me back to the love i have for the band!
He filled some really big shoes when Cliff Burton died.I like Robert Trujillo and he has done amazing things with Metallica, but Jason's energy was just contagious.
@@kirkcruz9721 Respectfully disagree. Kill ' em all, master of puppets, and ride the lightning with Cliff Burton on bass was the gold standard, and still is. I would gladly watch a long-ass video of Jason going through the photo album, naming every single location and just rambling on about whatever he remembers, that would be rad as hell
You can tell it’s an emotional experience for him, going through all that. Sounds like he’s trying to keep it together at some points. I’ve always loved Jason Newstead.
Not gonna lie, I'd love to have like, an hour long video of Jason going through the contents of the box, listening to the demos and everything, and telling the stories that accompany this or that. That'd be so cool
Normally, looking through someone's "vacation" photos and "family albums" and listen to them ramble about them is the last thing anyone wants to do. When it's Jason and that family album is of Metallic, I could do this all day. Jason deserved more love. He was the only one of the four that came back stage to the only show I ever was able to afford to attend. He had just played a 2 hour set but was still so gracious with his time and made every fan he talked to feel like they were the only person there. Thanks, Jason. I'll never forget Tropicana Stadium, St. Petersburg, Florida, USA, Dec 29, 1999.
Never bother to add a comment to these videos, but by fuck is it good to see Jason again. Top Top bloke and will always be a member of Metallica in my eyes.

Not yo take anything away from Rob but to me you were always the BEST bassist Metallica had. Thanks for blessing us with your monster bass riffs and your stage presence. In my opinion Metallica was the best when you were with them. Thanks and cant wait to see what happens with you next!
He’s a great guy and a good bass player. But he’s not even in the same galaxy as Robert. Jason flat picks all of his base parts which is rather easy to do. Rob plays with his fingers, including whiplash; exactly how Cliff did it. And if you think Rob or Jason are better than Cliff, you’re obviously not a bass player.

Metallica has had three phenomenal bass players. It’s difficult to decide who’s my favourite. Cliff is the obvious choice. A legend. Truly. But Jason was the guy when I first got into the band in the 90’s. Jason had the best vocals: harmonies, growls, and that one chorus in Creeping Death. He gave 100% at every show. And Rob…. I mean, it’s hard to deny Rob’s talent. He’s a solid player, a great live presence, and just seems like an overall cool dude. I know these guys are gettin’ old, but I hope they have at least one more record in them. Doesn’t have to be 80’s style metal either… I’d be happy with a resurgence of their 90’s era sound.
He has such a good memory! Humble to give credit to others that were there at that time as well. The Black album is a heavy album and yes it made them super stars. Don't care what people say, this album changed my life.

When he was picked he even got praised by Cliffs parents
“Blackened, that’s a good one.” Jason Newsted: The dude who wrote it.
Nope, try again ;-)
@@emmanuelmartin8666 he wrote the main riff
Jason did In fact write the main riff to blackened, any hardcore Metallica fan knows that
He wrote the main riff. No doubt Het and Lars contributed largely to the song
@@TTIX3 i dont even consider myself a hardcore fan, and even i know that :) haha :)
I am so happy that Jason was chosen to do this. That shows respect. It is so good to see Jason doing the unboxing. He played and co wrote My Friend Of Misery on the Black Album. I am glad that Jason did this unboxing. He deserved to.
*Glad to see Jason happy and healthy! He never gets enough credit for what he did for Metallica! He is a great bass player and was the most awesome backing vocalist Metallica ever had! We love you, Jason!*
Indeed. His debut record - Flotsam’s debut - is easily one of the greatest metal records of all time. Great band still, but never the same after he left.
Agreed!! It blew my mind that that was Jason doing the backing track on Enter Sandman during the chorus....I always assumed it was James's vocals of high and low doubled up so yea he fooled me
The fact that they reached out to Jason and that he agreed to do this makes me so happy.
At first I thought: "Oh, Lars is going to open the box"
Then I hear this man's voice saying: "How's it going?" while he looks at the camera
I had an emotional moment right there, like, seeing an old friend, you know? I've been a fan for almost 10 years and seeing Jason opening this box, felt like Justice for me.
Guess you could say it was ….Justice For All
...and Justice for all for sure. In these moments, Nothing Else Mattered
I knew as soon as the first sound came out of his mouth.
(Also, that much hair on Lars?)
@@drmedwuast I agree. I doubted myself for a moment, but then realized I was right. It's really cool that they chose this, but even sweater that Jason agreed
I love that the boys are still in touch and let Jason unbox this black album set. Just shows they still care
Wow, they got Jason unboxing this. That’s actually pretty cool
Yeah !!! Metallica was great with him
He left but he contributed 8n the success of the band so it is normal that he is still recognize as a member

Didn't expect Jason at all! Nice that he got to do the unboxing even though he's not (officially) a member anymore
It's great to see him!
Yeah I was like WTF?? Very cool and unexpected
Is he an old member? I’m kind of a new Metallica fan.
Right I didn’t even know that was him
Don't call yourself a fan if you cannot name the few past members. I hope you heard of the god Cliff Burton
I'm just now realizing how much of that era belonged to Jason. He was the soul of that band. He's who I think of when I think of those years.
Was never the same after he left. St. Anger was a terrible Album. Have not liked anything since. But we always have everything before.
I smiled the whole time watching this. So glad to see the man who was the heart and soul of the band for over a decade, fanboy over this box along with us. Props to the guys for making this happen!
Hell Yeah. This is soooo good to see, Jason is the shit. Loved watching this.
I'd listen to Jason describing every photo, sharing all the memories, no matter how long it took!
Im right there with ya my dude
idem
This, very much yes
Wow, Jason's attention to detail on when so many promotional pictures were taken really shows more than ever how much he cherished his time in the band. It's impressive that he remembers the minor stuff from 30 years ago when the band was at their commercial peak and there was so much going on at the time, yet he could still take it all in. Rock on Jason.
Remembering all those details shows you this guy was very present and switched on everyday. It wasn’t all a haze that was taken for granted. He showed up everyday and gave it his all. I miss his presence and energy!
I didn’t even recognize Jason at first to be honest but it’s awesome that he’s doing this one
IT IS so cool🤟🏻🤟🏻
I feel like the only reason he did the "Hows it going" bit was to reveal himself
I didn’t recognize him either
@@bt3743 Still didn't recognize him! Had to skip forward in the video to figure out who it was.
I had to take a look in the description to make sure that I see and hear actually Jason.
It's clear to see Jason was a fan who got to play with his favorite band, and even after his departure by his own request, he remains a fan. The man is pure class in my book.
it's great when history is respected
We want more Jason. More stories, more music, more of him. Such a cool and humble guy. A true inspiration.
Love you Jason!!!!!
I could literally sit and watch Jason go through that entire photo history book and recount his memories. Top effort dude, such respect :)
Me too! The listening to him for hours part.
I was at that concert too. :)
I saw that tour in Montreal, the infamous pyro accident. After several hours wait, the gunners took the stage, but then cut their set short due to Axl being a crybaby. As every good Montreal always does, riots ensued!! lol
Yes it is
Wow, you got to see those 3 bands at their best. That is too awesome to put into words.
No doubt. Grounded, self-aware...just very sober in thought. Love the guy.
They just need a little hit of Tegrity.
The guys in the band are quite down to earth now adays, but yeah, he's quite humble and cool.
Jason! So glad to see you're including him in this. He's such a humble guy, and an key player in many of us fans' eyes. (Don't tell anyone, but he's my favorite Metallica bass player, he's the one I grew up with)
He’s a lot of peoples favorite
Yeah, he's such a likeable guy and a great player. And he's so immensely proud to be part of the world's biggest band.
And I mean absolutely no disrespect to Cliff and Rob who are superb players as well.
My favorite too, I know Jason and the band have cleared the air and are on good terms; friends again, but I still feel lile there is nothing they can do to make up for the shit they put him through. Ahh well let bygones be bygones I suppose.
Jason is the best!
Still miss his backing shouts 🤟
It took me a second to realize it was Jason. It is so cool that he is on good terms with the band. You rarely see that when someone leaves. Plus his memory is perfect for doing a review like this.
Same here, I thought it was just some random old guy given a gift and seeing how they respond. lol
If i didnt read news I thought he is Lars Ulrich
Oh.. I've seen your videos reacting to something about Metallica. LOL to found you in the comments xD
It's great that Metallica shared this unboxing with Jason. Glad to see they still see him as a brother!!
Well...
@@ImYourOverlord I doubt they see him as a brother but more as a financial liability especially James. James was always king asshole to him.
i’m a huge metallica fan but it’s just is a result of the criticism they were under for not including him in the AJFA box set promotion
@@luisyamamoto1884 You are probably right. James has always been a complete and utter asshole to Jason.
@@SuperSnakePlissken For that, James had better be thankful every day, for the rest of his life, that Jason was too big of a person to do what anyone else would have done, which is to pound his face repeatedly.
Oh yeah, a lot of emotional when i saw Jason there, imagine for him how meanful was to be inclued, Jason always got a way to thanks the Metallica family, crew, fans for everything, Jason is an angel, Jason will always be in deep of my heart and i respect him as a person and musician, god save Jason!
Thank you Jason. You are the heart and soul of Metallica and it just hasn't been the same since you left. We will always appreciate the energy, love and passion you brought to Metallica.
I’m pleased Jason still and will always gets so much respect from the fans. What’s even better is the band knows this only too well…
Most wholesome thing I'll come across today, possibly the week. Glad he got the unveiling.
This is Truly Metallica history. Jason is a bro for all of us who love Metallica! A legend forever!
I didn't expect Jason at all, but I'm happy to see him doing the unboxing
He’s also going to be in the black album podcast with everyone including bob rock.

Wow, that's awesome :D
Jason is so relatable as a true Metallica fan!
He was an ultimate fan, that received an amazing opportunity. We all lived vicariously through him... I'm so happy he was the one to do the unboxing!! 🖤
Seeing Jason here brought tears to my eyes! He deserves it more than anyone! Great job, fellas!

That quote came to my mind too!

Classic
LOL, I thought exactly the same, as soon as I saw the landscape, the porch and that hat
Gotta love Jason man 😂 such a wholesome down to earth human being. I’m glad he still participated in Metallica related stuff every now and then
Jason is a Beast.
Awesome reply man.bang on!🤘🏼
I was very fortunate to have been introduced to Metallica in the early 1980s.
Will always wish he was still with them he was my hero. He’s the reason I great out my hair and went in the bathroom and shaved my hair underneath. My mom was pissed 😂
Same here man grew up with metallica with jason in it. Best era ever
@@kirkcruz9721 Respectfully disagree. Kill ' em all, master of puppets, and ride the lightning with Cliff Burton on bass was the gold standard, and still is. The other bassists were just trying to live up to his standard. Don't get me wrong, Jason Newstead is a phenomenal bass player and I love everything he did while in Metallica. Having been a fan since the 80's, I always look at the Cliff Burton era as the best.
@@KennelGuyTries The era is dependent on when you came onboard on the Metallica bandwagon. All the era was great one way or another
@@KennelGuyTries the story of how much Jason had to struggle during his time in Metallica getting over the passing of Cliff Burton was a testament of his virtues...and regardless he still pushed this big heavy metal band to strive to be the best that Metallica could be! I like the fact that Jason still remembers all the places where the pictures were taken
Jason is my Metallica bass player, I was too young when Cliff died, and Robert is amazing, but not my bass player. Lots of emotions with this short video. Thank you Jason and thank you Metallica for getting him to unbox 30 years of memories for me.

Fuck yes, FUCK YES, so much respect to Metallica for allowing Jason to do this !
They really changed, a LOT! Thanks for kirk for being the light in the darkness.
Honestly, I would watch a 4 hour long video of Jason going in depth about all the stuff here, all the stories behind the pictures and everything
I would happily spend a whole weekend with Jason and go through EVERYTHING in this box set and have him tell me his memories!
Honestly that would be the greatest weekend of my life!!
I would gladly watch a long-ass video of Jason going through the photo album, naming every single location and just rambling on about whatever he remembers, that would be rad as hell
Totally - I could go for a couple of hours of that.
I was just thinking the same thing. I could watch him talking about the history behind the whole boxed set all day long.
You can tell it’s an emotional experience for him, going through all that. Sounds like he’s trying to keep it together at some points. I’ve always loved Jason Newstead.
I just love how humble and respectful this dude is. A lot of people would be bitter and resentful in his situation but the guy just oozes class.
Jason is so humble, and an incredible musician. I hope that he benefits financially from the sales of this box set.
He does benefit financially from it. Why do you think that he's opening it up.
You can tell by looking at his backyard that he's financially pretty set LOL. But i get you
Not gonna lie, I'd love to have like, an hour long video of Jason going through the contents of the box, listening to the demos and everything, and telling the stories that accompany this or that.
Having Jason doing the unboxing speaks volumes!, well done Metallica!.
A video with Jason could literally never be longer than anybody wanted. What a guy, always and I mean always has been nothing but a professional.
Its not too often you see a major rock star that had stayed so humble and didnt let fame go too far to your head...Jason know that you are well missed and i know i can speak for tons of us in saying that you're always going to be with us and that we love you.
