Doug has captured some amazing and expressive images of Neil in concert while placing the proper look to the lyrics in the song, "Red, Red Wine". His face exemplifies much anticipation between 0:54 and 1:04 ”It's up to you, All I can do, I've done" with his soulful, sensitive eyes almost speaking with their own language in itself. At 2:22, - "My blue, blue heart" shows an image of Neil like never before or ever again. His white stage attire showed him without reservation with his left arm raised, bent and holding his head over his left eye in turmoil. The shattered broken and blue heart in that scene pops of pain. At 3:07 - "Stay close to me" there emerges brilliant colour of crimson red wine, two bright red roses with lively green leaves, a deep red satin fabric to adorn the scene with a vision of the woman faded. 3:12 - "Don't let me be alone" - is a reversal of the previous stanza. The woman is shown with a dark background denoting sorrow, opposite a wine glass and a rose. 3:30 - 3:41 -"My blue, blue heart" shows astounding colour and progression of the song's depth of emotion. An image of grapes, a wine keg in rich brown wood, wine bottle and wine glass next to a blue heart with notes colored inside, corks and a bottle opener next to two glasses of wine and grapes in the end. Noteworthy as well is 1:23 - "I'd have sworn, that with time" - Neil's image on the left with roman numerals swirling as if in a labyrinth, swirling in a star studded sky with the woman's image on the end. Then movement emerges at 1:35 - "Thoughts of you would leave my head" - Neil is singing in the foreground while the faded woman's image moves across the screen over Neil's head. As I contemplated how Doug would possibly set images to this song, I was pleasantly surprised to find his special touch in illustrating such artistic images and photos appropriately befitting the lyrics as Doug provides us "more than just a sound--" - Neil Diamond (1974)
Thanks for your truly amazing comments, Donita. You have once again displayed your unique an uncanny ability to illustrate in words that which I seek to in images. This provides viewers with a virtual 3D of the song... Neil's inspired, heartfelt words, my images and your description... leaving nothing in the shadows of doubt. I have always loved this version of this song. As with his other songs from Hot August Night, I am of the belief that the raw Neil sang from his very soul. As he evolved into the 80s be became, rightly so, a polished performer and one who the sang from his heart.
A reminder of, quite possibly one of the greatest performances of all time, as those, fortunate to have been at those concerts still attest...

I am a fan ofcourse, the Great man Neil. But that does not mean that I like everything he does. (Same goes for other artist). The song is beautiful but sung too whiney , I have heard beter versions from him. Keep up the good work Doug.

For one, it is a sad, sad song about someone seeking solace in alcohol in a fruitless search/attempt to get over one that he so deeply and truly loved.... _"Red, red wine, go to my head, make me forget that I still need her so..."_ Heartbreaking. And in this version of the song, Neil sings _as he feels it._ The sadness is palpable; it oozes pain. Secondly, you're not saying it's "whiny" because Neil is singing about _wine_ are you? 😉 Oh!
