  • The Rolex Submariner is probably the most recognizable watch on the planet thanks, in part, to a core design that has changed little since the late 1950s.
    The iconic silhouette of the rugged tool watch has long-since crossed over from watch and diving circles into mainstream consciousness.
    The latest installment of Behind the HYPE looks at the enduring popularity of the Rolex Submariner and the many variations that have fueled a thriving collector’s market.

    The value of Rolex, is the amazing quality of service and repairs. Recertification, record keeping, traceability, it's unique identity attached to every unit. Restoration and reliability is difficult to match with other time pieces. It's really about the company that makes them that sets them apart from the rest. Had a sub 32 years, an enjoyable investment.

    I have owned many Rolex timepieces but they are massed produced and not made by hand. Approximately 1 million pieces per year. I have moved on to the ultimate dive watch the Blancpain Fifty Fathom’s 5015 & 5050. Breguet, Zenith and Grand Seiko just some of the pieces in my collection.

    Far too over priced for a factory mass produced watch.

  • @RK-zo9vs
    @RK-zo9vs 2 роки тому +3

    This watch cost $300 about 50 years ago, it is worth no more than $500 now. They now make a perfect replica of it with identical movement and all with materials of the same quality for $ 500. It is in fact a Rolex, it is just not made in the Rolex factory. Think of it, it has a simple and cheap date movement, cost about $50 to make, a bezel cost about $20 to make, some laser engraving etc for few extra dollars. It's a cheap piece of garbage. A Tissot Seastar 2000 with Powermatic 80 is better value for money and better looking and that already probably includes more than 100% profit for the price of $ 1000.

    • @hathaway.1166
      @hathaway.1166 2 роки тому

      Doesn't change the fact that it's still a replica

    • @CheesyCore
      @CheesyCore 2 роки тому +1

      500$ in 1970 is equal to 3800$ with inflation
      also when you talk early 1970, you talk about the middle of the quartz crysis, so the landscape was totally different
      everyone was obssessed with the new, marvelous quartz technology. a movement thinner and far more accurate than anything before
      nobody wanted a rolex, seiko is the hot thing. jewellers literally gave mechanical watches as insentive to buy jewellery, while a seiko 4843 was selling for 800$ (around 5500$ today)
      context is always important when you talk about history like that
      also you can't compare a sub to a seastar, its level of finishing is nowhere near a sub, and its movement is a mass produced ETA compared to rolex own in-house
      its much more fair to compare a sub to a fifty fathoms or a polaris

    • @Touyoujin
      @Touyoujin 2 роки тому

      You still have a long way to go my friend, the bread that you are having in your daily life was just a few cents 50 years ago lol

    • @RK-zo9vs
      @RK-zo9vs 2 роки тому

      @@Touyoujin Not so much though. $100 in 1972 is equal to $ 684 today. This should give you a value of about $2000 for a Rolex. Rolex would still make more than 100% profit if they sold submariners for $2000. This is no technical marvel. A watch maker will tell you that a Seiko 5 movement if the one or two plastic parts are replaced with metal is just as good a movement as the Rolex and this comes in watches that are currently $300, again now just add some laser engraving and a better quality bezel. As I said the Chinese make an identical Rolex for $500, Rolex movement and all, it is just not made in the Rolex factory. $2000 would be a fair price still, as you already pay a significant premium for the brand name.

    • @parth7092
      @parth7092 2 роки тому

      Lol, I know the replica factories that you are talking about and they are still far away from making a 1:1. The movement has not been cloned perfectly, it can only look like the original movement. The watch itself also has its tells if it's a replica. This is an uneducated comment.
