It’s that simple. You can charge like 30% more with the label. Now every outdoor brand has pretty much come up with their own version of it that they don’t have to pay extra for, so it’s pretty much just a flex now (hence brands like Supreme and Stussy using it).

gtx is certainly still used in a ton of scenarios, but I can't help but find this funny these days as a lot of skiers are ditching goretex jackets for more breathable materials, and long distance trekkers, probably some of the most ingenuitive athletes, have found that the weight 3L waterproofing like goretex isn't worth carrying around. this vid does not even mention there are many types of waterproof membrane configurations: 2 L, 2.5L; 3L.
these membranes when applied in a traditional way (sandwiched between outer fabric and inner fabric) will only work when the DWR (durable water repellent) is still attaching to the outer fabric. If not, the whole outer apparel will be soggy and renders the waterproof membrane (goretex, event, neoshell, outdry, etc).
to make these membranes work requires certain conditions; for example: the temperature is relatively much lower than body temperature. Thus, if you wear these in the warm rain, then, you will get wet from your own sweat. .

Goretex was extremely desirable for decades before hypebeasts got to it and anyone buying goretex items for fashion reasons doesn't know shit about the material.
GORETEX is a purely functional material that adds no aesthetic value and is VERY expensive because for the goretex logo to be on an item the brand has to license the fabric and adhere to certain requirements set by WL Gore to ensure the item meets their standards and won't have their reputation tarnished by shoddy craftsmanship of people working with their material.

because Gore Tex sounds cool. Many brand names sound cool. Palace brand sounds cool, “Supreme” sounds cool, thats why people buy them. Nobody give a damn about what gore tex is, its just kinda fabric that feels little bit different.
