Mafia 1 was a Coppola godfather epic, alive and thriving, you felt the world and atmosphere of a time as if it were alive. Mafia 2 was a Scorsese flick, where you live in the scene and each is masterfully tailored to impress and breathe its own life. Mafia 3 was a Tarantino movie within a movie. Artsy, out there, over the top, and filled with racist characters. This remaster bullshit is like some random guy found the original film reels and edited clips to his own liking.
@@___moonlight___ I love it when someone takes the time to reply to a lost comment. I remember how beautifully captured the era was, the music, the hard mission at the dock, the red car assassination... and just how immersive I was when I appreciated all the love that was put into the game. It's a rare game... but I know exactly how you feel :) at least we appreciate such art :)
I agree, you describe it perfectly saying it was a beautiful game made with love and epic atmosphere because they made the 40-50s feeling with the music, cars, clothes and everything they made it with perfection just like Grand Theft Auto made the 80s feeling perfect in Vice City and Vice City Stories, I think Miami is the perfect choice for a game like Mafia and GTA that takes place in the 80s because Miami is what mostly of us thinks of first when you think about the 80s and american organised crime. I think that is one big reason people loved Vice City so much and it was a bigger success than GTA 3 because like you said about Mafia 2 , Vice City had the perfect atmosphere and it was made with so much love and people can relate to a Mafia game that takes place in Miami with coke dealers, sportcars, boats, pastel suits, hawaiian shirts and also how Tommy Vercetti ruled his own mansion with an own army of goons. I think thats why people loved it so much because they nailed the Miami 80s atmosphere just perfectly. 2k did the same with Empire Bay in Mafia 2, because I think most of us thinks about New York is the best atmosphere for a 40-50s Mafia game after all the movies like goodfellas and the godfather people relate to this kind of story they made in Mafia 2 because they made the Mafia 2 story like a freaking movie just like goodfellas very similar but in its own way. I think those games thats made in the right place in the right time and has a great independent story but with details that people recognize from the best movies and also small things they recognize from the time and place the story is based of, those games is made with most love and become the most successful games. Just look at Mafia 3? Why didnt people like it? The shooting fysics is great but it was a game that took place in the 60s in New Orleans and the main character was a black ex soldier in a Mafia game. I think people not liked it because its harder to relate to that kind of story... Its not because people think a black guy cant be the main guy in a Mafia game, it was because people dont buy that kind of story they want to feel passion from things that they can relate to. Trust me if Mafia 3 was based of black gangsters in the 90s Compton Mafia 3 would be a great success if they just made the story as half as good as Mafia 2 but that kind of game with a black guy that fights to take over a city based of New Orleans from greasers and mobsters, kids dont relate to that they didnt grew up with that kind of movies they grew up watching Al Capone, Antonio Montana, The godfather, Marcellus from Pulp fiction and Paulie from goodfellas, they want games with stories that relate to this kind of characters. Sometimes its not harder that, I dont know what the game creators and the big companies been thinking the last 10 years but instead of spend time making modern games with graphic that are over done and stories without love they should care less about those kind of stuff and instead release more games like this more often. After Mafia 2 and GTA IV those kind of games died and if were lucky we get a Mafia/GTA game after ten years. Between 2002-2010 the companies made us great games almost every year and at least we got great games like Vice City/LC stories to play between the bigger realses but something happened after GTA 5 and Mafia 2 I dont know what but now we only get those kind of great games one time every 5-10th year if were lucky... Not just gta and mafia went cold but also other great games like the driver series, the true crime serie and all those one serie games like Scarface, The Getaway, Max Payne and even Electronic Arts made us really great and beautiful games like The Godfather and the James Bond franchise was awesome even if goldeneye on Nintendo was my favorite EA at least made some good Bond games too like everything or nothing. Its like the Illuminati bought all the gaming rights and dont let anyone make great games anymore just a few ones thats sold their soul to them, its like the top of the gaming industry hates us or something 😂 . At least Iam very happy they release GoldenEye on xbox but I wish everyone of those old ps2-xbox games was available in Xbox and ps5 store. Then I wouldnt complain they stopped making great games but we dont even have the chance to buy our old favorite games like true crime new york, Scarface and Vice city stories....
Yes, I never wished they remake first Mafia. I would like to see only REMASTERED version not Hangar13's screw up (my expectations are based on Mafia III experience). They are even going to change the story without contacting original story writer who is still around in game business... And yes I think Mafia II still looks decent and not needed remaster. Adding missing parts of the game would be another story...
I don't know. The new visuals look so sharp and with that lighting, I'm getting borderline telltale cartoon vibes. I think the original looks better while technically not actually having better graphics.
The problem is unless the rebuild the game entirely from the ground up (which they didn't do) there's only so much you can do to "improve" visual quality in a game. A lot of the things that would make modern games look nice only work because they have a modern foundation to work off of. It's like when they started porting old games to PC. In most you could see how janky a lot of the animation and such was because you're now seeing it up close and in far more detail as when the games were original released.
Every single time I see a remaster I find myself loving the original artistic design more when I watch comparisons (and they ALWAYS seem to remove certain mechanics or physics.)
8Paul7 facts.. I don’t think Henry was a rat, He had already been a made man for awhile. I believe the Chinese thought he was a rat but they were either wrong or lying.. but who knows
I don't know why but the lack of any clothing PhysX kills my interest. Long coats not billowing in the wind or jackets flailing during gunfights just looks so bad compared to how it was.
@@sam.butler nobody discovered a way to enable PhysX on consoles at the moment, sorry bruh, maybe they turned it off because it made game run even worse on consoles then it does
@@TesterKomorki thats really disheartening. How can they make the game run worse with so minimal changes? It was one of the Details I loved in the original and its ruined overcoats for me now
Honestly so am I, until they fix the bugs and allow you to turn off PhysX I'm sticking to the classic version, plus I feel a some things they changed didn't exactly NEED changing.
Many of the issues seems to have been fixed with recent updates. The increased (and unnatural) saturation is no longer there, and the parked truck at the very beginning now has it's lights turned on. However, turning off the annoying bloom effects still requires some manual tweaks, which could have been made simpler.
Sorry for the late reply but, did they fix the eyes being stuck in place all the time? For me, it's mostly the artistic decisions made that make me not want to play the DE.
some of changes i dont even see as an improvement. Like for example the character face shadows depending on the lighting of the room. It's too dark now. I much rather prefer the original version lighting than the new one. And it doesnt look realistic to me at all, the shadows in real life are not that dark in 99% of the cases.
Same as the Bioshock Trilogy which was the same as the Arkham Collection which was also the same as the Silent Hill HD collection... It seems that every time a game gets a remaster, it ends up looking better in some places and worse in others. Nothing "Definitive" about this release.
I just have to say, anyone who hasn't played Mafia 2 needs to go change that, be it now or wating for the Mafia 1 Remake to drop first. Don't let this slightly disappointing upgrade to the game fool you out of getting it. This game is a masterpiece, an experience, whatever you do do not miss it!
I agree. One of the best games I've ever played. And, honestly, watching this comparison, i would recomend the original version. I think that the old graphics are great, even for today. It's a must have experience, anyway. I also recomend to turn on the realistic driving. Discovered that option after my second or third time playing this game.
Update! just checked out the PC port and a lot of the changes and issues that were mentioned for the environment like the cast lights and Vitos coat physics seems to be fixed now. For example the intro part when vito is returning to his family's place the trucks lights are back on, and the particle effects of the snow has returned as well.
@@Mr.President107 I'm not really sure when they moved to Empire Bay but it was something between 1930 - 1932 for sure, but I think in that cutscene is 5 years old Vito not older, but I don't know
I love Mafia 2, it's one of my favorite games of all times. I bought Definitive edition trilogy on PS4, and to be honest Mafia 2 DE is basically the same game that I played on Xbox 360 10 years ago. The work they did with Mafia 1 DE is impressive, and I think Mafia 2 deserves the same treatment.
When I heard there would be a remaster, I was hoping they'd bring in all the missing content from the original, shame they didn't... The changes are disappointing...
So we have a game that got 90% of its content cut before release, and all we get is a lazy remaster, that gives everyone a tan, and makes some bugs worse then before.
@@ryanpauloneeyed9669 They had cut alot of content for Mafia 2 same as with any game ,for example GTA4, but in GTA 4 they cut all the not so important stuff like wearable gloves, and more cosmetics etc... In Mafia 2 they cut out alot of the stuff that changed the tone of the game completely. Like different endings and things to do in the city... Allegedly some missions too... So they basically made the game more streamlined and story driven. Only by one narrative... Which in turn made the world feel more empty that people are used to in GTA style games... Bringing that stuff back in a remaster would make sense and enhance the gameplay of an old game.
Cloth physics can be re-enabled by going to the game directory and then going to the “EDIT/APEX” folder and then by deleting the “CLOTH” folder. It only seems to work for Vito though and not everyone else. Better than nothing I guess. D3T really dropped the ball on this version in so many ways.
Personally i prefer the original. Their faces are a lot more iconic in the original. This video was made very quickly after the release and to sync those scenes in the game must've taken quite some time... Its people like you that help me decide to buy games like these. Thank you so much for the effort.
They made some minor changes to things, while introducing a ridiculous amount of bugs and glitches that weren't present in the original, while at the same time not actually fixing some of the bugs and fixes that were in the original. lol
Compare 10:03 fight scenes to 10:13. The "definitive" edition looks oversaturated and unnatural in every aspect. It seems to be suffering from the same issues most "mild remasters" have.
Hi, just thought id point out that the artifact sticking out of the grey coat model seems to be more inline with a rogue mesh vertice that hasn't been weighted properly to the animation skeleton/rig. same can be said for 8:18 where the coat itself appears to not be properly binded/weighted to the animation skeleton rather than a physics cloth simulation issue! I do 3D character and environment modelling and these issues can pop up occasionally lol
I think I remember this kind of thing happening a few times in the original to me. Don’t remember whether it was with PhysX turned on or off. Like the light flickering, I think it’s an old issue that’s now more common in the remaster for whatever reason.

8:28 I've said it before (regarding other games) and I'll say it again here: To me, improving lighting and textures don't mean much when the underlying 3D models aren't given a polygon boost. Just look at the shoulder... :(

@@ThoRCX I love how the replies above proved your point lol. It seems like most people can't think for themselves anymore, or at least can only think in extremes. My opinion is that the remaster is clearly better in some ways while lacking in others. But yet most of the comments I've seen for the last two days are just "it's not good". But that's just objectively untrue lol. Mafia 2 was already a great game to begin with. This remaster is interesting to me because they clearly made noticeable improvements in many areas (though people keep ignoring those improvements because it goes against their narrative), but they also made some strange choices that do take the game back a few steps. I guess the point is the remaster isn't necessarily better or worse than the original, it's just "different".
It still is a downgrade in some important aspects: no road reflections suck, trees poppin-in suck, character subtle facial animations being butchered suck, bugginess sucks...the only improvements are some of the textures and different color grading.
Note: for those who do not know yet, if you already had the previous game they already give them the Definitive Edition game, only it is hidden in their library steam Nota: para aquellos que aún no lo saben, si ya tenían el juego anterior, ya les dieron el juego de Edición Definitiva, solo que está oculto en su biblioteca de steam
The change to the eyes and animations killed it imo. Joe doesn't even look like the same person anymore. And the way their eyes don't move independently makes them seem more robotic
5:32-when I saw this, thought: "Wow, the remaster looks really great. But then I found out that it was an original game, and I was very surprised. I think the game, in terms of details, doesn't need a remaster, because the game is so beautiful. But the fact that they made new character faces and high-resolution textures is definitely a good thing.
The NPC car headlights are still in the old way of not casting light on the road until they are very near to the player and "shut off" almost instantly as they leave your immediate vicinity. Overlooked thing or unfixable by the remaster devs, who knows.
I mean how is that good financial advice exactly? You can pick up the entire trilogy with the remake for roughly 60 bucks this includes all DLC and slightly improved graphics. You are paying more if you would get these games individually and have to buy each DLC seperately.
I just don’t understand how they forgot the to add movement to the bottom of Vitos overcoat, every single time I walk with literally the best outfit for a mafia game it is immersion killing and I was just thinking about it the whole time replaying the game .Ps The animation was in the older version of the game on the PS3 so I’m just confused as to how it couldn’t be done on PS4
Best mafia hands down ! Great story and I like how you can do a lot of stuff like open doors fill up on gas npc look more alive they’re doing things like looking in the trunk or fixing a car that broke down etc great game overall
Honestly about the remaster of mafia 2 i really would like to leave the graphics like how it was and replace this by focusing on bringing back the beta content
Never played the original (except for a demo) so I can overlook most of these but learning they removed clothing physics does get to me since I've always appreciated that fine bit of detail no matter what the game looks like and it was rare, especially in 2010.
Mafia 2 fans before definitive edition: We need a mafia 2 remake or remaster! Mafia 2 fans after: There was never a point of making a remaster. No hate btw just a joke
I actually just played through both recently. I still have my original ps3 disc copy. And it's an amazing game from a different time. And it runs like butter smooth. I actually do like the definitive, I have it on ps4. And am currently enjoying that version, but it crashes alot and has some serious graphic issues that persist consistently. Idk my ps3 version never crashed once and the framerate ran smoother. This was just way to obvious not to piont out. I love all the new visual improvements, but at a cost of how good it runs and crashes, gittering and inconsistent framrates. Idk I can't say the definitive is better, imo the original is still a much better game by far. I can only hope they can patch and improve the definitive edition. Because it's and amazing game that deserves nothing but the best...
A year late but i think the reason why it crashes on the PS4 but jot the PS3 is due to the terrible backwards compatibility issues that plague some titles for some consoles
Very mixed feelings about this. For every improvement there is a downgrade. For my taste the footprints in the snow look like the pavement has molten, this effect was way overdone. Some sounds are better but it seems mre coherent with the surroundings in the original. What about left channel only for dialogue on consoles? . Conclusion? Waste of resources! (edit: Why is youtube editing layout of comments? Layout is serving a purpose like readability!)
If you think this one is lazy, have you seen the Mafia 3 definitive edition? There is literally zero difference despite them advertising that there was
@@Curtis_11 thats because its a dlc pack rerelease. It doesn't mean that its an improved gameplay performance with a remaster. Its just that they call it definitive edition because of the mafia trilogy.
What people are forgetting here is the amount of code that has to be rewritten for this game. They did Mafia I justice, especially since the architecture was fairly easy to figure out for the console generations of that time (PS2, XBOX), but for a game like Mafia 2, This were written for POWER PC Architecture, which is alot more complicated to port over to x86-64.

Mafia II was way ahead of its time, some details look better on the original version
@@BopaBola honestly, well said. I've never played the first one, but finished the second countless times and still have yet to finish the third.

This was a beautiful game. Made with true love for the setting. The atmosphere it gave I will never forget it.
Me too i loved this game so much it was incredible the feeling was just absolutly amazing
Nice game. One problem. The roads are dead. There is almost no car traffic. But it's the same with GTA games.

I think the same buddy...
Couldn't agree more. Especially after seeing the scene at 10:13
The problem is unless the rebuild the game entirely from the ground up (which they didn't do) there's only so much you can do to "improve" visual quality in a game.

I mean how is that good financial advice exactly? You can pick up the entire trilogy with the remake for roughly 60 bucks this includes all DLC and slightly improved graphics. You are paying more if you would get these games individually and have to buy each DLC seperately.
The original game was epic , and it is now playable on consoles with a graphical improvement , so why shouldn’t we get it ? (Real question)
One of my favorite games of all time. I just wish they had done little more to the definitive edition.
10:53 The audio file from when I was a kid I would remember walking outside and hearing “Empire Times Read all about it”. I can’t believe it was cut!
Its not cut
it's just not played
That moment when you like the original over the remaster...
I think the original definitely handled the eyes better that the remaster.
That moment when you didn't watch the video enough to say such a statement.
I just don’t understand how they forgot the to add movement to the bottom of Vitos overcoat, every single time I walk with literally the best outfit for a mafia game it is immersion killing and I was just thinking about it the whole time replaying the game .Ps The animation was in the older version of the game on the PS3 so I’m just confused as to how it couldn’t be done on PS4
did they remove PhysX?
@@manuelmacalinao500yes
Best mafia hands down ! Great story and I like how you can do a lot of stuff like open doors fill up on gas npc look more alive they’re doing things like looking in the trunk or fixing a car that broke down etc great game overall
seems pretty unnecesarry
also some things being worse in a remake is rather inacceptable
Good thing it isn't a remake then.
Yes, and the size difference is ridiculous. You would be better with 9GB classic with mods from Nexus.
@Mr_W0lf youre right
my argument still applys tho
@@MrFett-od3xn the remake for mafia 1 looks sick tho
@@mogul188 havent taken a look at that one yet
Honestly about the remaster of mafia 2 i really would like to leave the graphics like how it was and replace this by focusing on bringing back the beta content
Mafia 2 graphics was already good and bruh this game will definitly worth to if those cut contents were back
Indeed
It's funny how they call if the definitive edition but it's buggy and needs patches.
It’s called definitive because it definit(ively) needs a patch
I’ll see myself out...
@@ThaBotmon lmao
And looks worse than the original
No one messes with Crosseyed Henry... "I'm gonna go grab my glasses, my glasses."
Hey nice! Goodfellas reference. Just re-watched that one
@@Nick930 Haha.. Yeah, a classic one. (y) Also while I'm here, fan of the documentaries. Found you yesterday, was up all night watching. Thanks!
Never played the original (except for a demo) so I can overlook most of these but learning they removed clothing physics does get to me since I've always appreciated that fine bit of detail no matter what the game looks like and it was rare, especially in 2010.
nobody:
harry : like my mom always said you can never have too much ammo
Wont ever forget that line
Hello don vito
@@beginner7043 hello thompson you are my favourite weapon😂
Lol
No point to make remastered version of game
The old one still looks good
WWE 4 life on Xbox one you are able to play the original version
@WWE 4 life join us
There is a point better textures and look.
Heya! I was waiting for this by Saturday morning, but today works :) Thanks Nick
Saturday morning? The game didnt release until tues afternoon. Or did you mean this upcoming saturday?
@@Nick930 Why you gotta do him like that Nick
@@Nick930 yup, this coming Saturday, that's when you usually upload your videos and when I watch them at the pace of my hot cup of coffee ;)

Yet another "remaster" where they AI upscaled some textures and broke various things. Simply not good enough.
1:33 His eyes over lapping his eyelids 😳
They all are cross eyed
Whose back after the gta announcement 📢
Domt play this remaster. Its filled with stuttering, frame drops, and studio issues. Wait until a patch comes out
@kratos Did you try setting the fps limit to 300?. I had no problems playing at 4k.
90 FPS and stuttering many times -_-
@Tiredofdumbfuks Yeah, with 144Hz monitor, stucking in the "slowmotion mode".
That's odd, on my stock ps4 I haven't had issues like that.

Mafia II: Who are you?
Mafia II Definitive Edition: i am you, but worse.
You don't know until you play the game?
Brah stop talking nonsense mafia 2 remastered is better bro better textures and lighting.
@@katsthegreatthegreat3144 did they fix the issues
@@katsthegreatthegreat3144 yeah good luck saying that to the BUG on this game
Such a disaster.. shouldn't have even made one if they were gonna be that lazy about it
If you think this one is lazy, have you seen the Mafia 3 definitive edition? There is literally zero difference despite them advertising that there was
@@Curtis_11 thats because its a dlc pack rerelease. It doesn't mean that its an improved gameplay performance with a remaster. Its just that they call it definitive edition because of the mafia trilogy.
honestly they definitely should put more effort they did like to mafia 1 definitive you can tell they tried hard on that
@@kadancesinclair6557 they hired another company to do the remasters lol
@HostileEnvironment well silent hill 2-3 xbox 360 wasnt lazy maked, the people who made it worked hard but konami fucked them up real bad
