The idea is that people in California shouldn't dictate policy in Texas and vice versa. In your example, Texas should have no say, or recourse if someone travels to California to get an abortion, and California should have no say in the gun laws of Texas. Unless the other state has a problem with it, Texas has zero right to punish people, including residents of Texas, for what they do in other states.
Open carry and constitutional carry is legal in Arizona. California has no right to punish California residents if they go to Arizona and open carry while there. Abortion is legal in California, Texas has no right to punish Texas residents for going to California, or any other state where is it legal, and undergoing a procedure that is legal in that state.
States rights does not extend to controlling your residents actions and activities when they are in other states.

    • @dragonrings14
      @dragonrings14 Рік тому +5

@@bingosunnoon9341 Actually you have it backwards. Letting the states decide actually meant states abolished slavery before the nation as a whole could come to an agreement. The north did ultimately force the south's hand because it had gone on long enough but by letting other states abolish slavery before that point, the government knew they had the majority of people on their side.
To apply this to abortion, most states have abortion legalised. The majority of the country supports abortion. By allowing the states to decide, the Supreme Court's decision didn't affect the vast majority of Americans. There are some states that need to work it out but this way women aren't at the mercy of Congress about their care. Congress can't make decisions about anything.

The health exceptions for abortion that Ms Mace talks about don't include emotional illness: I was pregnant at 17 and I was also a serious alcoholic with suicidal thoughts and a boyfriend that cheating on me with everyone in town. I knew that if I brought that life into this world, we would be reliant on welfare and my kids would have been as messed up as I was. No one knew I was so emotionally unstable. I looked just fine on the outside--I was the only person on the planet that knew what the future of that child would have been like. Worst decision I ever had to make but I wasn’t about to traumatise my 3 year old with getting to know her sister as a baby who lived and died in hospitals for the only 2-5 years of her life. And I thank god the system and doctors here didn’t make timing and law the biggest issue. My homeland the USA is backwards.

I’m sorry for your predicament- but the opposing view of that is that you taught your daughter that simply giving up and erasing the “problem “ was the answer. In my opinion the greater lesson was that life is hard. And would have been that we persevered to protect the weak even though it was hard. Not a traumatized child. The sooner a child understands that the better prepared for life they are.
I’m sure this won’t be a welcomed comment. But I believe that if you post something publicly, you agree to be rebutted. I don’t mean it as an attack. Just to show the opposing point of view.
I’m attached to the medical community in a couple ways. I can’t tell you how many kids that I know who were born with defects , that defy the odds. Trusting an OB doc to be a fortune teller is a fools errand. If you heard the conversations that go on behind closed doors with those doctors, you’d probably never see one again. If you did you’d definitely choose a female. I’ve been a fly on the wall too many times and heard with my own ears. I’m sorry for your loss. But it’s just not a justification for killing in my opinion

Okay, maybe about 2/3rds of them want there to be legal abortion, but the other 1/3 are so strongly and passionately against it that they'll vote for anyone who identifies to be pro-life on that issue alone. Democrats are either in denial about this or akin to big dollar donations from the abortion lobby. I would like to see more civilized debates among pro-choice and pro-life women instead of having them act as if the other side is treasonous and put politicians in an absolute bind. At least we can kind of see how things will play out now that states have their own power to decide.

Most Republicans suddenly stop saying "let the states decide" when they have the votes to make their agenda pass federally. The few who really do stick to that principle even when it's not convenient point out certain phrases in the constitution which were put there to appease separatists. But they never give empirical evidence showing that a state having anywhere from 1M to 30M people is somehow just the right size such that anyone with a larger or smaller jurisdiction should be powerless by comparison.

It is. It’s pent up resentment of social conservatives have against the gains made in women’s rights over the last century or so. Especially amongst the evangelical crowd, and other right wing groups who think society should be patriarchal.
They can’t actually end abortion, and I think at least the leaders in the “pro-life” movement have known that from the get go. They just want the ability to punish women who do seek an abortion, and are willing to engage in some very cruel, disgusting behavior to achieve that goal. There’s a reason we call these kinds of people the “Christian Taliban”.

Here's a simple reason: perhaps many of them see both matters morally equivalent? If you prevent a pregnancy, the argument might go, aren't you just doing an abortion before conception can occur? The central issue is about "life"; some people see 'frustrating' life through contraception as not much better than 'ending life' through abortion.
It's not an argument I find persuasive, but I don't find it hard to see how people might.

So support the politicians who aren't so crazy and let them try and get their party back on track.

With some of the opinions, I’d like to know why some people still think we should even have states? The idea that the federal government should make every rule makes having states pointless. There are voters in every state that vote for their state leaders based on that populations beliefs in how they want to be governed. To have them go through that process just for the feds to step in afterwards and say nah we’re gonna have you do things this way, is just a waste of time and money. The federal government is supposed to be small because we have 50 states, all with their own leadership.

Both Bill Barr and Nancy Mace said they pretty much don't support Trump for 2024, both said they stand by the gay marriage decision, both said they'd be fine with an abortion law of 12-15 weeks. This is what we want the Republicans to be saying rn because I promise you, the "crazies" Bil Maher refers to want gay marriage banned, want abortion banned and want Trump in power whether he gets the votes or not.

Andrew Sullivan crushed that last part. He put a humane perspective on the table. Stop pretending like people are just trying to kill their babies and realize they just had to make a very difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy that they wanted. It is sad that life had to end so early, and that it didn't work out as intended but there is no happy solution and the choice should be left to the parents, not some religious nut who believes in invisible wizards in the sky.
