Isn't it a bit of a stretch to call it a good cause? Insulting and ridiculing someone? Sure it is for comedy's sake and sure the guy deserves it. But it is still an unpleasant thing to be on the receiving end of this. And in my book, doing a bad thing to a bad guy, doesn't qualify as a good cause.
Daniel Shterev I think you missed the point. because at least 1M view on youtube, it's maybe their best program on the internet. Also John Oliver is deeply subversive, I bet they get funds here or there :). Some episodes are deeply informative and some others are here to fun and they really are, in the other hand some are pretty akward to me. For the Dalaï Lama episode for example, things are not as simple as that, but it induced the audience into a false sense of certainties while the reality is way more nuanced than that.

in honor of the third anniversary of bob's passing yesterday, let me drop you some truth for all those who think Bob let his beef go: No he didn't, he got killed off by karma before he could! this was posted 11 nov 2019, bob died exactly 3 year and 1 day today, oct 25 2023. He had an almost a whole year to see it. I am sure he did see it, but people say he didn't because he responded to any bad media about him in days of it coming out. But this time he did not, and it was not because he let it go...it's because he got LUNG SICKNESS COMPLICATIONS! HE DIED OF IDIOPATHIC PULMONARY FIBROSIS AND EVEN APPLIED FOR BLACK LUNG BENEFITS A MONTH BEFORE HE DIED, THE SAME BENEFIT HE HELPED DESTROY FOR YEARS. If you ask me, that last bit was probably the last straw for God, if you are a dying millionaire with wealth on the back of miners you fucked over for years and your first response to getting lung sickness was "let me get one last lick!", that would be how i would take you out. @@olorinmagus4479 Of course Lawful good people exist too, the ones making the laws for the better are what helps us common people. But sometimes you need a loudly voiced complaint to bring light to the issue and get the point across, hence why John Oliver exists.
It did! And it won one! The song did too. According to Wikipedia: "Eat Shit, Bob!" won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming, and was nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. The episode itself won an award for Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Series, and was nominated in the categories of Outstanding Production Design for a Variety, Reality or Competition Series and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Variety Series or Special. Episode directors Christopher Werner and Paul Pennolino received a nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series.[34]
I firmly believe they went to this extent because if bob Murray sues them now, he'll have to directly quote everything they said about him. No judge is going to listen to that song and be able to respect the man it's sung about.
This song is not only hilarious but it's utterly immune to anything Bob can throw at it. If he doesn't sue, he looks weak to his coal buddies, but if he does, he looks like a fucking moron.
John should televise the hearing so everyone can see the judge, baliff, court reporter and both lawyers reactions. I bet even Bob's lawyer laughed at this. Between his own lawyer and HBO's lawyers fees Murray is gonna end up broke real quick.
I just imagine there being a stack of paperwork listing off all the things they call Bob in the piece and the judge being like, "Excuse me...?" and John just being like "Here, this'll help *rolls in television and starts video*".
I like to think the legal team will argue that the song is slander, to make a legal case they will have to argue that the statements made were not so absurd that no one could be reasonably expected to believe them.
I wonder if HBO plans to stockpile some of the budget so that, when George actually finishes the books, they can make their next big moneymaker: *Game of Thrones: Brotherhood*

@@alexandrasandu3947 HBO's reasons might be at least that this show earns much more in commercial revenue than a 200k law suit could get close to. But you are right - without corporation's attempt to maximize profits and not giving a damn about their employees, stories like this would have never happend.
Apparently, Bob Murray, after the brief piece on the show about the case after its initial dismissal (but before his attempted appeal to the West Virginia Supreme Court), sent a letter to the original judge hearing the suit’s house, and apparently didn’t run it past his or Oliver’s legal team before he sent it, the latter of which put the letter into _ex parte_ territory, which, in regular English, means that he sent it without both parties’ approval. The judge, Jeff Cramer, denied his request to reconsider his ruling on those terms, sent a letter back saying “Please don’t send me any more of these, or I’ll have to impose sanctions on you and your lawyers,” and, best of all, made the letter available on the public docket. The link to the letter is below, and it’s well worth reading in its entirety, because it shows just how willfully ignorant to the law Murray really is. It would be personal to a point for them. John Oliver is a performance artist and he was being attacked for his art. Even though they would be theatre performers, an attack on the arts is something they wouldn’t take lightly and they would have been more than happy to add their voices to the “fuck you” being sent.

When I feel down and weary of the world, I just watched this episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. It always cheers me up and brightens my mood.😂
This is pretty clever. Apparently the musical number alone cost almost half as much as HBO's legal defense in total. HBO basically said "We're willing to give Mr. Oliver this much money to DARE you to sue us again, guess how much we're willing to spend to defend him."
Thunderf00t said it best after some nobody falsly DMCA-ed him. "Fighting these things is mostly a matter of neccesity" because if it becomes clear you won't fight any of these things you'll just get bombarded with them.
@KingQwertzlbrmpf and it’s so great that Last Week Tonight in particular decided to fight back, because most ordinary citizens simply can’t afford to. Using their money and resources for good!
Imagine the look on the judge’s face that has to watch this in court when Bob sues 🤔 Bob: “he told me to eat shit!” Judge: “and I’m telling you to grow thicker skin and get a sense of humor. Case dismissed.” 🤞
"Don't fuck with us, we will make your life a living hell!" 🎤🎶🎵🕺💃👯♀️👯♂️ This was hilarious! Standing up and pushing back as soon as the law suit said they were able. Standing up for others, fighting and calling out injustice. Fantastic. That's why I like this show.

Shawn Elliott OMG! I hadn't thought of that! If Murray DOES file suit, this video will of course have to be shown to the judges! That makes it even more hilarious!
Not to mention HBO's legal team can keep replaying the evidence, or quoting the evidence to verify each line is not reasonable. HBO Lawyer: "Your honor, on the grounds of Bob Murray being Jeffrey Epstein's prison guard, we argue it is not a reasonable position to hold, and therefore clearly a joke. If the opposition would care to present why they feel a reasonable person would assume that Bob Murray was Jeffrey's Epstein's prison guard we can proceed."

But that also is the problem. This team wants to address relevant issues but they have to toe the line because of HBO its interests. They have more freedom because they are a subscription channel but WarnerMedia does pose limits on what they can do. because at least 1M view on youtube, it's maybe their best program on the internet.

John Oliver is a hero to every person who has had the misfortune to work or come in contact with Bob Murray, as well being a hero to anyone capable of empathy.
If this is how HBO chooses to spend their money, I think I'll have to get a subscription.
Should be frigging tax deductible!
Agreed. I got to catch up on all the intros to these episodes and then watch The Righteous Gemstones
Same. I would consider getting a subscription to watch and support this.
So fucking true, subscribing right now.
Patience Gaydos don’t take all the credit from John now. He’s the one pushing the boundaries and deserves your money and attention, not HBO
This is, by far, my favorite episode of Last Week Tonight ever. Whenever I'm feeling a little depressed, I rewatch this episode and the musical number always cures my depression. Put John on Mt. Rushmore.
The most glorious ending I have seen to this show. They should win an award for this.
It's right up there with the Salmon Cannon or the world record cake.
He will
@@millernyne JO's been snatching the late night emmy pretty much every year I think.
And it is well deserved.
Holy shit my comment blew up lol
HBO's legal team: Thank god the stupid 2 year lawsuit is over.
John Oliver: Hold my tea.......
Lmao! Awesome comment
Lawyers complaining about too much work. Good one.
Fuck I laughed so hard I shat myself
Good ONE!!!
Hold my tea is a good one! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I think John Oliver just became an American hero.
Never mind the fact that he's British, he's an American icon.
@UberKrassMann sometimes you gotta go back to your roots XD
Rachel Miller I think he has dual citizenship
He's been mine from the start. He had me at Hello. I see Another Emmy for this brilliant episode alone!
Damn shame other countries come to America to stand up for Americans 🤦🏾♂️😂
LWT’s finest moment to date. John is in his element, and I’m excited to see where Season 10 goes! Keep up the good work. And shout out to the legal team!!
John Oliver has cemented his place as a national treasure
International treasure, really; but yes, absolutely!
Someone up the page said we're never giving him back to the UK. #eatshitUK ;) j/k, but no, you can't have him back.
So did nicholas cage when he starred in the movie national treasure.
Guess... he really earned thT visa. LOL
Since he's from the UK that sentence really tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about the US and their attitude towards other countries'... treasures ;-p
This man. This fucking legend. He did it y'all. He really did it.
John's joyful expression throughout the whole song looks like, "I've been holding this in for SO long and NOW you're in for it!"
I can not begin to imagine how hard it was for him to stay composed during the part where he goes "And this is the part where I have to say I have some bad news and some good news", actually.
like the shit he had stewing for Murray to eat. Scrumptious!
This was insanely good.. it made me laugh and cry at the same time. Thank you John for speaking up for the people. The world needs more brave people like you. I love you mate.
Say what you will about him, John Oliver does not half-do things.
And he fucking especially doesn't half-ass them, either.
kindlin Well, he needs a full ass for Bob to kiss.
No room for half-measures when you have a mad mind like Oliver. Absolute Champion, Troll of the Highest Caliber

I liked my own comment it's now 69, does that make you feel better?
John Oliver, you have delivered the ultimate "come at me, bro". For this, I respect you.
Bob Murray.... well, the song pretty much said it for me.
HBO should sell this song as a single in order to pay for the inevitable legal fees
HBO makes a few billions each year, the few hundred thousands that John's lawyers cost are just like change to them.
I will buy that mp3!
Great idea!
Totally, or Charity for the Holidays to kids/families that need it!
I would buy that song just to spite bob.
Imagine being a dancer showing for an audition and finding out it’s for this 🤣 they all looked so happy
It would be personal to a point for them. John Oliver is a performance artist and he was being attacked for his art. Even though they would be theatre performers, an attack on the arts is something they wouldn’t take lightly and they would have been more than happy to add their voices to the “fuck you” being sent.
The best part is if Bob sues over this, he's literally proving John's point
Edit: I got over 2k likes for this shit holy fuck I'm famous now, Hi Mom
This comment would be funny if it didn't already happen, and if this entire segment weren't literally about that having happened.
@@timbenj77 Uh... what?

@@ellanica I don't think you understand what wooosh is
@@EldyPlaysMinecraft I'm talking about the comment above you lol
This episode itself will get John his next Emmy.
AsherSax and maybe a Grammy too...😏
Was thinking the same. Poor Colbert 😂
This has to be the most elaborate insult in the history of mankind.
J. Ramos leave it to a Brit !
Bob: The ultimate wager. A SLAPP bet.
John: This is going to be - wait for it - LEGENDARY!
Certainly a classic of televised history already
The man presenting it had to be British... Although the Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan Mehmed IV of the Ottoman Empire is pretty damn close.
I'm not sure it's enough.
When I feel down and weary of the world, I just watched this episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. It always cheers me up and brightens my mood.😂
all late night hosts: wondering when John Oliver will stop winning Emmys
John: hold my beer *contends for the Tonys instead*
If "Eat Shit Bob" wins a Tony, that's a win for all of America
Except Robert Murray, who funded the crusades
This is pretty clever. Apparently the musical number alone cost almost half as much as HBO's legal defense in total. HBO basically said "We're willing to give Mr. Oliver this much money to DARE you to sue us again, guess how much we're willing to spend to defend him."
Lord Inquisitor
LEGENDARY.
Yes, my Lord Inquisitor ! Very Agreeable !!!
Imagine the look on the judge’s face that has to watch this in court when Bob sues 🤔 Bob: “he told me to eat shit!” Judge: “and I’m telling you to grow thicker skin and get a sense of humor. Case dismissed.” 🤞
I don't think I've ever seen anyone say "Don't fuck with us" better than this.
I don't know if its possible to ever say it better
Guy took hbo on and steam rolled lol
"Don't fuck with us, we will make your life a living hell!" 🎤🎶🎵🕺💃👯♀️👯♂️ This was hilarious! Standing up and pushing back as soon as the law suit said they were able. Standing up for others, fighting and calling out injustice. Fantastic. That's why I like this show.
the documentary on clive palmer called "Fatty" is pretty close, also Bruz: eternal is pretty good.
To me, this is even better. This is Bob Murray saying "You better not fuck with me or I'll destroy you" and Last Week Tonight responding "Good Luck"
I come back at least once a year
This episode is a masterpiece
Petition to HBO to release a singalong version of the song
"This is a tragedy" -Man talking about being badmouthed by a comedian, notably *not* referring to the deaths of 9 coal miners due to his complete disregard for the safety of his workers.
Also the irony of calling John Oliver and his team "evil people", which is also slanderous.
Wait, you mean the man who destroyed Alderaan?
@@DoctorWhoKage
yeah, same dude who nuked scarif.
jager64xxx xxxpanzer you mean the guy who orchestrated Pearl Harbour just to have an excuse to use the nukes?
@jager64xxx xxxpanzer isn't he the guy whose farts are responsible for melting icebergs?
This has got to be one of the most meticulously designed and carefully crafted response in the name of those whose voices are suppressed in the history of television. I wish we had someone like John Oliver back home.
You are 100% right and thank goodness John Oliver exists and that he and HBO fought this and then made this episode to shed light on this craziness!
I died when the lawyer interrupted 🤣😂
Is his from the Black Country by any chance? Sounds a bit like a Wolves accent.
Thank you for him. We really need this right now.
John Oliver is a gift and must be protected at all costs
I see HBO's new legal strategy is to make the Justices of the Supreme Court piss themselves laughing when they see this evidence.
OMFG!
XD
YOU’RE RIGHT!!!
And I think we can all agree, it will most likely work.
If the opposition would care to present why they feel a reasonable person would assume that Bob Murray was Jeffrey's Epstein's prison guard we can proceed."
hahaha John Oliver does it again!
