  • Prices of just about everything are going up all over the world. Someone asked me how I am going to cope with this. I can't give financial advice, all I can do is talk about how I deal with it. Money saving is down to the individual, people have to make their own choices about what is important to them. I can't say what you need to do. Martin Lewis at Money Saving Expert would be a good place to get some tips.
Keep a diary of every penny you spend and what you spent it on. Then work out if you actually needed the things you bought. That would be a good start.

@@mrsc3120 True. People need to think about that before they take on a sweet kitten or a cuddly puppy. Ten or twenty years of vet fees can mount up to a few thousand pounds, and more. A friend's dog needed an operation. Luckily it worked and the dog recovered, but it cost her £4,000. My Heidi cat needed vet check ups and treatment over a few years. I didn't add up how much that was. It had to be paid. Pets should be a priority when working out a budget.

Those of us who have learned to live frugally, being taught by parents who survived and thrived through two world wars in the UK, have learned to be more than well prepared. Food shortages, and rising prices mean nothing to me. I nolonger live in the UK, and petrol in the US is far less expensive, though most would disagree with that. However, it is easy to organize one's errands, and to allow oneself the occasional mindfully chosen treats, such as a trip to a neighbouring town to enjoy the scenery and a trip to an excellent thrift store, both of which bring me joy. From my earliest memories, my parents taught me that to waste anything was nothing short of criminal. And, I never open anything, until what is already in use has been used up. Period. I live like a Queen, on a very small pension, and have many luxuries others far richer cannot afford. I love nature, and surround myself with beauty, be that animals, birds, or clssical and folk music. Once in a while I allow myself a treat. A day out is something I always enjoy, as are hobbies such as sewing, photography, and searching for materials to make Christmas and birthday gifts for my daughter and little grand-child. Simple pleasures are all that one needs. I spend my time learning new skills on a daily basis, in order to be resilient. Nothing stands in my way, even though I am nolonger a 'spring chicken', I am able to overcome what ever challenges come my way. Being persistent and determined are two qualities that will see one through even the most difficult of times. This lady makes many good points, many of which have been long forgotten.

It's true that we have become a consumer driven society. Proof is in corporate budgets on advertising!
      Ppl buying on line. Etc.
Children don't know limits in many cases and that will be a drawback in time.
I am not retired or near but I wonder how families manage!
Beyond money is a refreshing term!
I'm not a thrifty person but I never shop online nor fall for marketing traps. I'm just in between I suppose. I know the value of things. That's a good lesson everyone should learn!!
Plus I am pretty good sometimes at getting a bargain on something I fancy! But willing to walk away if there's no deal.
I have a fair idea on economics so I know,on average, what worth means.
People in general mindlessly shop, habit etc.

Like you Ilona, I am retired and have only myself to account for.
Kim Harper said exactly what I feel and that it's going to be very hard for families with children. For so many affluent years , young people have become used to having plenty of food, takeaways, coffee shops etc, hundreds of TV channels and new clothes. My children are middle aged now and supporting themselves but I would hate to have to go back and struggle as so many parents are now.
A lot has been said in the papers and on TV about old people having to choose between eating and heating. A lot of this I feel is sensationalism. We in the UK receive a generous fuel allowance every winter, and there are pension credits with many benefits if a person is on a basic state pension.
Life is never perfect but the adage of "do I need it or do I want it "applies just as much when you are nearly 80 as I am, or if you are 28.
The low paid working family is the one that is going to suffer the most with increasing energy and food prices, particularly if they have teenage boys with hollow legs 🙂

You lunch looks delicious...your suggestions and thoughts on dealing with inflation are spot on. My mother and grandmother were of similar thinking. I've lived my life by "using it up, wearing it out, making it do, doing without"...it works too...that old adage 'waste not want not' is true. One way to save on food is to 'eat less food'...here in the U.S. it blows my mind that what so many consider a normal portion is huge...my mother stretched her food dollar, out of necessity, by serving small portions of everything,...a serving of meat was 1 ounce at lunch and 2 at the evening meal. We didn't break the fast until lunch time...hence we ate 2 meals a day, and no snacks in between...dessert was for special occasions..like a birthday..Not like today at all...I am dumbfounded by the amount of soft drinks people buy weekly. Water is a far better drink, and tea is not expensive at all and good for you to boot....you can drink it hot or iced...and a nice cup of coffee in the morning doesn't have to cost much either. So many ways to save if people would just think about it. And don't get me started on eating out. If I'm out shopping during a meal time, I take a sandwich and drink from home...it is much more pleasurable to eat it in the peace and quiet of my car or a park bench than go into the crush of a busy restaurant and spend for one meal what would probably feed a person for a week if that person were frugal.

I love your pep talks Ilona , they always help me to re focus even though I’m older than you and have had the type of upbringing that you had, but it’s so easy to let things slip ( you know those little things you want but don’t actually need )
We’ve always had to be careful with money so it’s no hardship , but for many people , mostly the younger generation , they will find it very difficult. Like you say it’s a state of mind and it becomes second nature to live life in a frugal way .
My generation also benefited from cookery lessons and home economics at school in the 1950s I doubt very much pupils get that today ( it would be far more beneficial than some of the subjects taught now

Hello from Sussex. I’ve found your channel and have subscribed. I stopped‘spending’ when I had to give up work. My home became my priority, everything went to making sure the mortgage was paid and I paid it off before I was 45. The downside of being so frugal is that I felt dreadful guilt when I bought myself anything, even a secondhand book off eBay for £1. Money has got easier since I paid off the mortgage, but it’s taken me almost ten years to be able to spend even a fiver on something I want rather than need.

    • @meanqueensuperscrimper8908
      @meanqueensuperscrimper8908  2 роки тому +6

Thank you for your comment. You have outlined one of the downsides of living a simple frugal life. When one has to be disciplined for so long it is difficult to let go a little bit when things start improving. Ten years is about right. I paid my mortgage off early because that was my priority. My attitude now is that I see money in the bank, so if I want something, I will buy it. That's not to say I have gone back to frivolous spending, I still consider each purchase.
Some people think that being strict with spending makes for a miserable life, that's not true. Money can enslave you, if you let it. Too much or too little has the same effect. Feeling comfortable when you have enough is the position to aim for. My friend is busy gathering second hand stuff and refurbishing it, then she sells it. She doesn't need to do that, she has far more money than I have. She tries to steer me in that direction. I say I don't need to make money, I have enough.
Your guilt will slowly wane in time. For now be happy in the moment. Do not get into the mindset of saving every penny, you can't take it with you when it's time to go. Best wishes. ilona

This morning I harvested about AUD $40 of Kipfler potatoes and AUD $20 of organic tomatoes with at least five times that amount to come. That's about 31 pounds or 37 euros. The wonderful thing is the pleasure I get out of being in the garden, and it's all organic. We save literally thousands a year by doing this. The cost of fruit and veg here in Australia is staggering, even if you don't buy organic.
I encourage everyone to grow something, even just herbs and salad greens as those fresh goodies cost a lot. You can grow sprouts in your kitchen if you don't have any outdoor space - full of nutrition and saving you money! A pumpkin or potato patch is not a lot of work and pretty foolproof, and again you can save loads and have some really filling, tasty food. I try to grow at least 20 medium to large pumpkins each year to see us through Autumn and Winter, also lots of cabbages which keep well. I save $20 for each large jar of sauerkraut I make. I dry excess cherry tomatoes on screens on the shed roof and they are bursting with flavour for homemade pizzas in the winter. :-)

@@daviniarobbins9298 Hello. I understand your frustrations. It does appear that us pensioners are doing ok. Not all are though, some pensioners have never discovered how to successfully manage their income. I was brought up with two siblings, my mother had to go out to work because my father spent most of his money in the pub. I watched my mother in the kitchen, how she prepared meals, how she did the washing, this set me on the road to making the best of what I have.
I learnt how to make things last, I made my own clothes, I did my own washing and cooked my own meals, from an early age.
When I bought my first house I was skint for a long time after that, had to get a lot of work done on it, all paid for myself, no partner. I sold and bought a bigger house, I was skint again. All my wages went into the house. Now on my third house, skint again. Now after 45 years of working I am finally able to relax a little. It is all down to personal choice and how you prioritise your personal finances.
I used to use Photobucket when it was free, I dumped it when they started charging. Why are you paying them to store your photo's. So you prioritise Photobucket over buying food. Madness. I stopped paying for a TV licence and got rid of the TV set, 20 years ago. Think of how much money I have saved. £78 for Virgin Media, that was a mistake. Get rid of it as soon as you can. I have never got insurance for household appliances, it's a rip off.. If you buy them new they should last a good few years. Put £1 a week away and save up for a new fridge or washer.
The bottom line is that you either cut your spending or increase your income. Run your home like a business, account for every penny. Don't give up, and don't be angry when other people appear to be doing better than you are. I am 72 and have a lot more life experiences to draw on. You make sure you are on the right path now, and with some careful planning you could end up in a good place. It's up to you. ilona

This can be a little on the cool side if you are sitting, so I have put a single size electric blanket on our sofa with a throw across the top for cleanliness. With a throw across your legs and the blanket switched on you will keep toasy warm for minimal cost!

Re secondhand furniture - when we get a piece of furniture from someone, it always tends to keep that person’s name. We’ve got Leonora’s lamp, Bill’s chair and Maurice’s Mum’s cabinet. We never met Maurice or his mum, but they live on in our house 🙂 we bought a mahogany bookcase on eBay and it had ‘Colonel Swayne’ written in chalk on the back, so that’s what we call it.

I think you make a good point, that those of us who have always lived frugally (or at least, for many years) will not be too badly affected by what is coming down the line. As with the 2008 crash, this new Depression will be the worst for those who have lived without their means for too long or who have tried to live like millionaires on £20k a year plus credit cards.

  • @sarahmc8309

Enjoyable video ! Very good points ! I always live on what do we need more than wants .
I find healthcare and dental care is something that has be saved yearly (we don’t have free healthcare for everyone in Ireland - it’s means tested )
Healthcare and dental care is something I always save on the side for !
But with the costs rising and trying to cut here and there to makes ends meet it isn’t easy when food bill goes up €10 a week that€10 a week could of been my savings on the side for dental care for myself or my son as emergency fund . Dental care isn’t cheap here at all and like said no free healthcare as I work full time and miss out on the limit .
Anyways other than that , slot food tips to live simple and frugal and save a little always for emergency times !
I’m not into hair fashion clothes nails ( I do my own nails at home ) hair cut once a year with my son .
I’m a deaf women and I could survive on disability here sadly . After your rent is paid and travel expenses on buses ( I get yearly tickets ) I don’t have a lot left if we’re on disability payment and cost of rising prices would cripple you for food / eletricity and heating would be well over €100 a week. I feel sorry for those that are on it as impossible to live on now with food prices rising €10-15 extra a week .. electricity €5-7 extra a week too ..
But we must remember to live below our means every time we do get a pay rise or working .
This is how I live now that I’m fortunate to work and never take it for granted nor my pay rises !
Live simple and frugal and save and always invest in pension- the rest is all extras !

I agree with some of what you say, but if we can't indulge in our wants occasionally, that means that we are existing rather than living. Yes, we can all find ways of saving money, we could all buy things 2nd or 3rd hand, but there are some times when this is not advisable and is, in actual fact, a false economy.
I applaud anyone who can make things, cook, sew, or have any other skills with their hands, not everyone can do these things, just like not everyone can be an Olympian athlete. Some people need the skills of others, that's not a luxury for them, so it is a legitimate expense.
It's much easier living within your means when you only have yourself to think about. Parents can't always say no to their children, adult children can't ever say no to their elderly parents, and disabled people and their carers have needs that, to others, seem like luxuries.
That said, you raised some very interesting points, thank you.

When I bought my house I moved from a one bedroom apartment to a three bedroom home.
I needed furniture so I went to consignment shops and I found someone selling high end furniture in excellent condition for a faction of it's original cost.
I work with many many people who struggle with car payments.
They say they need a new car every couple of years and they combine the remainder of what they owe into the new loan and finance the new vehicle for longer .
My car is twenty years old but thanks to careful maintenance looks three years old.
By not constantly buying a new car it has allowed me to save more than enough to buy a new vehicle outright when my present vehicle is not economical to repair.

The right time to ask yourself if you really need to buy something is in the store, not once you've made the purchase! Too many people absolutely must have the biggest, latest and best of everything, keeping up with the Joneses, even if they can't afford it. Then there are the poor lifestyle choices that increase the risk of poverty, like bringing up children as a single parent. Whatever happened to family life? So many of these single mothers can apparently still afford their hideous and disfiguring tattoos and piercings. Just makes you wonder! Some people were clearly not at the front of the queue when common sense was being handed out!

Are you suggesting ALL single parents are like this? Should people stay in violent or abusive relationships for the sake of the idealised, 1950s concept of family? Some become single parents through the death of their partner. Some because they are deserted for a younger or richer model. Many single parents ( male and female) work full time while juggling childcare and poverty. We also succeed in bringing up rounded individuals who get university degrees, go on to have families and are in full time employment. Please stop making sweeping assumptions. You would hate it (as I do) when folks say that being poor is all your own fault. As mean Queen says its what you do about it that counts!

I am currently unemployed and life can be a struggle but I still manage to eat well and I havent been near a foodbank. I learnt that buying a small or extra small chicken is not cost effective because there is more bone than meat. I will buy a medium chicken from Aldi, roast it and have a roast dinner, some breast meat is retained for sandwiches, the legs are saved to eat with chips or salad, the wings are snacks - most people would throw away the carcass but not me, i put the carcass in a pan of water on the stove and add some chopped carrot, onion and seasoning when the carcass has fallen apart, I retrieve the bones and throw them away and I have a nice pan of soup to eat.

It's good to know you are making the most of the food you buy. I stopped eating meat 35 years ago. Must have saved a fortune. I won't preach about becoming vegetarian, each to their own.

Hello, I was introduced to you through a woman named Rhoda Stone just today.
I wanted to start with a friendly HELLO 👋
I was waiting for you to say you no longer had to be so strict because your lively hood had become such a habit at this point.

Exactly. Keep your eye on the bank balance, watch the numbers go up. Then you will find that you have quite a pot saved so you can buy with cash instead of using plastic.

Home cooked food. I only use my main oven to cook meals in bulk. I was poor before, when I had my first mortgage & was starting my own business, doing the prep for it at night whilst commuting & working in the day full time.
That way I know exactly what's going into my meals. They're much tastier than shop bought and far more nutritious & healthy.
Buy dried & long life food when they're on a good offer. I don't eat red meat, so organic, non gmo dried european soya mince is always in my home. No refrigeration or freezer space required for it.
Pack the freezer with quality freezable foods when they're on yellow sticker, last reductions at the supermarket. It always amazes me the number of people who walk past the reduced counter without looking.
All in one full length fleece loungers are cheap, easy to wash & dry plus they keep me warm.
Jacket potatoes. Cooked mostly in the microwave & just finished off in the top oven for literally 10 minutes or so. Fillings are cheap, varied & quick to prepare.
Research home hair dyes & hair scissors instead of regular visits to the Hairdresser. Even if you need to go, you can do hair maintenance & cut down visits.
I love my make-up & fragrances. But I'm buying the ones I like at 70%-90% off RRP now as I buy discontinued lines. Or fragrance occasionally from Ebay when someone's tried it, doesn't like it & sells it. I'm still getting what I know and love at vastly reduced prices.
Buy pet food in bulk if that cuts down the cost considerably. So what if it takes up a bit of storage space. It's there at a much reduced cost.

Hi, that was absolutely blinding! I don't know how I came across you but you're the perfect antidote to all the rubbish I seem to watch! Like you, I am very frugal by general standards and most things are secondhand except the cooker that's arriving on Monday. I've never been in debt but saying that, I don't own a brick. Owing to some mental health issues, I felt unable to buy my house when it would have been opportune to do so. I mainly regret this as I'll have nothing to leave my son. I just have to be philosophical about that but your tips have made me think more consciously about what I do and if I need to do it. Look forward to more of your videos

Hello and welcome. Buying my first house was a massive step for me. It was my boss at the time who persuaded me to put my money into property. Being a free spirit I didn't want to be tied down to one place, I like moving about. I bought a small cottage in a nice area, which needed a lot of work doing to it.
The job that I did (lorry and bus driver) enabled me to move about, and it was comforting to know that I had a place to come back to. The early days of house buying (I moved twice more) left me skint for a long time. I can now see that it was worth it. My boss was right.
Your frugality will see you through life's twists and turns. You have a good attitude towards money and what is important. ilona

I have to be honest... I NEVER say to myself, 'No I can't afford it'... mind you my desires are not expensive.... I tell myself, oooh that's lovely... BUT... If I want it I could have it, just not now..... then the urge passes..If the urge doesn't pass I save up... and sometimes by the time I have enough, the item is on sale and costs less... I never feel deprived that way....That way I can have anything I want ( within reason) ....

Thank you for your comment. It's good to hear from you. People are always looking for some magic tricks to save money, but it always boils down to the same simple rules. If you don't have the money to pay for something, you can't have it. Don't spend more than you earn. Be honest with yourself when considering a purchase, do you need it, or do you just want it. Discipline is the magic word, you need plenty of it. Best of luck. ilona
