Coldhands wouldn't be a sworn brother of the Night's Watch, because technically the vows are only until death. The first part of the vow even says: "Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death." So because Coldhands is dead there is no way he could be a brother. Kind of like how Jon Snow's vows are now non-applicable now that he's dead.
I would've thought it's connected to the Long Night, like they are watching for the night, or watching *over* the night; and the Night's King took it from the Watch rather than the other way around.
Just a bump. Cant believe its been 2 years on this one. Well worth another watch given the show content and having perused the world book. Great work as always guys.
Welp, I binged on these videos ridiculously hard and now I feel I've run out of stuff to watch. It's been fun, guys.
Fuzzy Dunlop When that happens to me, I just start over from the beginning. At least when it comes to media I love.
I loved that there was some patch face talk! another great show guys keep em coming
Lol in the case of Lord Walder, Arya completed his rat cook transformation by feeding him his own young. Kinda hope something along these lines happens in the books!!!
Great job. I sincerely enjoy your videos. Its awesome to watch a UA-cam video about ASOIAF where the posters actually know what they're talking about and have researched their subject matter. Thank you for this and keep up the wonderful work.
I agree with you two, there needs to be a character that just disappears. It shows that while a lot of things are eventually revealed, some things will never be known.
Lol six years after the comment, but that's why GRRM made Asshai by the Shadow. And to be honest most of the far eastern side of Essos.
It just adds wonder and weight to the world. Not as fleshed out as the main story (obviously) but it's clever because if he ever wants to dive into a completely different tale. He could have it anywhere on his world map and still keep it within the same universe.
If you haven't already, I highly recommend: "The World of Ice and Fire"
But seeing that you watch long lore videos like this, I bet you already have read it lol.
Love your podcast! I've recently gotten into it and I am working my way through all the episodes. A little theory I've always had about Mad Axe is that It will be Arya in the future (this is totally tin-foil). She killed Dareon and it was mentioned multiple times that she took his boots. Melisandre mentions specifically, when she is talking about glamours, that they can be made from many things including "a dead mans boots". The kindly man refers to Dareons boots as "a dead mans boots". The Mad Axe is known for taking off his boots before he sneaks around to kill his brothers of the night's watch. I think that Arya will find out that the Night's Watch murdered Jon Snow and glamour herself as Dareon to get back to the wall. While she's there, she will take off the boots (removing her glamour) and sneak around murdering all of the black brothers with needle, to get revenge on them for killing Jon. I totally made that up, but it's always stuck in my head. Anyway, thanks for the great videos. You guys are awesome!
"Fools of Westeros" sounds AMAZING!!!
NEW VIDEO WHERE!?!?!??!
Seriously. Around this time every month I get all excited to see your newest creation! Keep on going, you're doing great things!
Brilliant. Love this subject. It's so fun to think of the possibilities of who could be a new Nights King. Stannis definitely has some obvious parallels yet so much is said of his "iron" will and the Others are known to despise iron so maybe not. Great work.
Mary Harrison thanks! As usual, after we recorded we realized several more things we could've added... The detail is never-ending.
Craster,s father was in the nightswatch. the Starks have been joining the watch for years. It's possible that an older stark on the wall is crafters father and that the others want craster,s sons for thier Kings blood.
I love your videos, they are like a drug. Westeros History, Radio Westeros, Because Geek, and SmokeScreen are the gospel for ASOIAF knowledge. Preach on!
Agreed. But Smokescreen and Because Geek just arent in depth enough to hold my attention. Theyre good, dont get me wrong. But it takes 20min for me just to get focused.
Been waiting for this topic for months! Thanks, and GREAT JOB!
I just realized the importance of Cold Hands not being able to go through the gate. People assume that in dying Jon Snow will be free from his oath as a Sworn Brother, but this seems to set a president. Cold Hands, in death, is not longer a Brother, and can not go through the gate. Should Jon Snow be resurrected, he will no longer be in the Night's Watch.
Very good point!
Yup! "And now his watch is ended."
By far the best ASOIAF podcast I've come across. Awesome work. Please keep it up.
Also re the whole kin-slaying thing is the concept of kin itself. Is Robb Stark a kin-slayer for executing Lord Karstark, a very distant relative? Is the offense worse for closer relatives? Would be interested to know what you think about this...
you guys are awesome
holy shit. I never in put together that knights of the watch carried whites through the wall or the point of the magic gate if the wall itself keeps them out. Just blew my mind. Great work, per usual.
I feel like the frozen sentinels might be some kind of allegory or analogue to the origin of the others, and the thing that came in the dark is an allegory for wights being put into the thrall of the others. The night fort i believe holds the key whether symbolic or literal to the whole origin and purpose of the others somehow
The nights king was a nights watchman who was killed by his brother. Like how Jon was killed by his 'brothers'. Ygritte says that Jon snow has a cursed name. Maybe the original NK was a jon snow.
There was also the last hero who searched far and wide for the CoTF (like Bran).
Poor Egbert... great as always!
Great job guys! Glad to see you've been coming out with some new material. Happy New Year!
Yesssss!!! My workout tape for the day is here! (yes, I said "tape" because I'm OLD!)
P.S. I just noticed that when you click Soundcloud link in your description, it cuts it off so it takes you to a channel that doesn't exist.
It's 4am here guys! I guess I'm going to be up for another hour and a half.
No one ever talks about The Ice Dragon or references to it. I think ya'll are missing out on a lot of good material. I know I know everyone thinks The Ice Dragon is a parallel to the story much like the show is. This is wrong! It's set in the same exact world!!!! It says so on the inside cover of my 2014 copy!!!
I admit I cannot figure out where and when this book took place but the little girl and her father reveal much and more about the others, humans, and other/human hybrids. The fathers fear of his ice daughter could reveal a lot about who or what the little girls mother was...I wish more people would discuss this book!
Also I've been under the impression that Melisandre has Schizophrenia. If you reread/listen to all the chapters she appears in then compare to her pov chapter. Many people think she doesn't eat or drink, if you reread she actually does eat and drink to "keep up appearances."
A Schizophrenic would blindly believe a God was directly backing them, that they played a key role in the future, and that they are invincible. If you take away her visions and black magic abilities she's just a woman. I have not found any real evidence that's she's anything but. Many other characters in the story have visions and black magic abilities, don't let these things make her seem special to you. Anyways food for thought.
Chris Gettel
I assume she's a hundred+ and uses glamor to look young and pretty.
everyone does
It's not set in the same world as ASOIAF, the marketers added that to sell more copies, the line saying it is set in Westeros has been removed from George RR Martin's website.
Chris Gettel i saw a good theory that the place the ice dragon in the story died at winterfell and thats why there is the constantly cold pool in front of the weirwood which doesnt fit with winterfell being on hot springs
I'm very curious as to how guest right formed in ASoiaF. In our world, it was the Ancient Greeks that believed in it. They thought the gods walked amongst us & any one who came to your house could be a god so turning them away or not treating them with all courtesies would be VERY hazardous to your health.
in the bible it is said angels walk amongst men, and given as a reason why one must always be hospital
Yey................An early Christmas present AA podcasts Song Of Ice and Fistry
Lovely video! Your videos always help me appreiate the depths of Westeros. But, something of a request... Could you, at least come season five, start marking if your vids have book AND/OR tv show spoilers?
I always thought the warm liquid was a tear
As did I. Didn't Bran taste it and it was salty?
very good episode as always !
Nearly choked as I am, in fact, holding my baby while listening.
Do you think that the patterns the others arrange corpses in could be an ancient form of writing that people have forgotten?
Good question
Agree with the Ben Jen motif of not caring but have come to think he's more important based on rereads. Ulther and company are described specifically as being unusual. Like they were put there as well as in DoD dead bodies can't just become wights when Jon brings back dead bodies from the Grove. Leading to a theory that Ben Jen was being tracked, he knew it, and placed the dragonglass cash. He has Stark blood; something that may be important because all six Stark kids are Wargs, meaning their Stark parents are magical.
Ben Jen would have been the best bet to bring back for the Others to kill Mormont. He was probably bring tracked by the Others, but wasn't laid with the other dead. Making me think he wasn't dead when they placed those bodies.
Awesome video again thanks!
Hell hounds... fire wyrms maybe? Why would they be fighting at the wall? Are they supposed to be territorial creatures? :/. Love your videos!!! Soothes my nerdy heart :) :D
As a choice-based system for what's going to be upcoming for you guys to record, how about every once in a while you set a list of a bunch of episodes you're currently working on, and get votes on those; so instead of having to write full new episodes, the ones you're already writing can be shown as well.
Waiting for the "Fools of Westeros" episode!!!
That would be excellent!
Interesting that the Starks and wildlings worked together the first time the Nights King rose and seems to be occurring again.. History repeating.
Is this an early Christmahanakwanzika present? For me? I love this! Thank you =)
The Black gate is weirwood and Bloodraven see's through the weirwoods eyes remember.
Just started listening to it, but on the black gate: when Bran passes though doesn't he taste the drop of liquid from the gate face. Seems as if I remember that it tasted salty like it was tears. Perhaps the gate (since it talks and moves) was actually a person made into the gate and it lives a very sad life. Any thoughts?
There was a female other on HBO. In the background when the "Night's King" turns the baby into an other. Great job though. Love your guy's videos.
I wonder does the gate work for all black brothers or just those that made their vows in front of the old gods.
James Patillo III you my friend are grasping for straws
1:06:30 I wouldn't say Bran didn't lose anyone... JojenPaste anyone?
+Jeremiah Morgan Whether or not JojenPaste is an accurate theory, Jojen is most clearly doomed, agree. But Bran hasn't realized this yet, or at least he hasn't accepted it.
Westeros History I see what you mean. Very good point. I'm curious, how do you guys feel about the Jojen Paste theory since we're on the topic?
Westeros History BTW love your podcast. I've already heard every episode and I've been listening to them multiple times each now while I work or drive!
Westeros History I even listen to it while I'm just at home relaxing to be honest. Idk his name but I've heard him on another podcast, the guy you did the three part battle of ice series with? He's really good as well, you should have him on more often if he's free and you can. That was pretty cool.
I agree, but Brynden BFish is a hot commodity with his own ASOIAF website to keep updated. Everyone vies for his guest appearances.
What about Brans final vision where he tasted the blood? He potentially saw the Nights King and the Nights Queen...creepy end scene for Brans story in Dance with Dragons...
Now they'll need to fix that loophole of being released from your vows after coming back from the dead.
Caitlin Brewer first chapter of TWOW: littlefinger opens Westeros’ first lawyers office specialising in defending oath breakers and personal injury claims for slips and falls at the wall
👌🏽
1:34...Alright, I'll be patient. Just for you two though!
even though cold hands might have been a brother I think the fact that he died means his watch has ended n he's no longer in the watch. that's why he can't pass through the gate
Off Topic.. Aziz or Ashaya, have you guys ever chimed in on who the Hooded Man is ?
If the Maester's did something to Sarella, the Sand Snakes would raise an army and burn Oldtown to the ground.
The septon in KL decrying the Red Wedding suggested that all responsible would pay, and he seemed to be suggesting that the Lannisters were party to it, so Roose would certainly be caught, even though that's a follower of the Seven. Also, when the Night's Watch men killed Craster, Mormont considered them all cursed, himself included.
The Hell Hounds of the series are the Clegane Brothers, though I can't see either of them joining the Night's Watch, but they may fight at some point, beyond the one instance they already did.
The Maesters and Oldtown enjoy the support of all the rest of Westeros. The Sandsnakes have been trying to raise an army to crush just the Lannisters their whole lives. Not to nitpick, but I dont follow your logic. :)
Danny Grinuk They have not lol, are you watching the show?
Ya, they've wanted to kill the Lannisters, but they were not trying to raise an army. You can't have failed to notice that none of the Sand Snakes were even with Arianne when she tried to seize power and start a war. They trusted their Father to get things done and didn't start acting up until he was killed.
Plus, I doubt Lady Dustin is the only noble that hates the power Maesters have.
The entire Martel plotline is vengeance on the lannisters. Tywin had the mountain kill Elia Martels babies. This is the whole Dornish plot, why Oberyn sends Quentin to Danarys. The secret marriage pact crafted by Varys and wait... have you not read the books?
Literally their entire plot is Vengeance against the Lannisters. Lifetimes of planning, for one house, nevermind the entire 7 (6?) Kingdoms.
Danny Grinuk We only see them after their Father died, what are you basing this on? lol
And wanting to kill Lannisters is not the same as planning and raising armies to do so.
Hell hounds ?
What if it was the Mountain (undead/frankein-clegane) and his brother that is not confirm dead ?
Mélanie Bergeron Excellent observation !!!!
Do you think that the story of the nights king may be a cautionary tale for the others as well and that's why they only take Craster's sons?
"Song of Ice and Fistery"
Aziz--- 2014
Hi. I'm hoping you read these. This might come off weird and if so I'm sorry.
I've been looking hard for some one with an open mind. Unfortunately every one has been understanding the text a certain way for so long they can't consider it might be a massive misdirect.
A search of legends we find several that include a pale maid with deep blue eyes. Hugor, Galladon, Florian. Are they others? If the legends said a Targarian gave some one a sword and they ruled a new kingdom does that make sense? Yes. It fits every single legend. But everyone has invested so much energy following GRRM's misdirect that they can't consider it.
Why is he the Night king? Because he ruled from the night fort. The Starks were kings of winter. The burrow kings were named because of where they ruled from.
Let me draw a picture. When we started we had Crastor. A crazy guy with his daughter wives sacrificing his sons. What's interesting is that I figured out who his parents are. Wynton Stout is the only member of the watch old enough and positioned on the wall to be lured. But who is the mother? They history misdirects us to think it's a wildling. A study if inheritance and people leads to Maege Mormont. Why was Jeor on the wall? Why did the poor Mormont family have dragonsteel sword? Why does Jeor know everything but do nothing?
We need to stop crawling down GRRM's rabbit hole and stop falling for his slight of hand word play.
Sorry. But please, at least think about it.
MA BOY AZIZ LOOKIN LIKE JOSH HARTNETT FROM THE FACULTY
So is there anything about Rhaegar's body being found or buried/burned? Just off the top of my head all I can think of is they mention him falling into the river and the ruby's floating down stream. Could the Rhaegar in ice armor from Daenery's vision be a look at the future? What I mean is if we haven't seen or heard about Rhaegar's body after the battle, maybe he will rise as a whit or even as something similar to Cold Hands. Shit maybe he is Cold Hands.... I do realize this is unlikely as the Trident isn't exactly near any of the 'walkers that we know of..
Any thoughts on this though?
Stannis Is The Mannis.. not the Nights King .. good job on the pod, once again guys . Don't think there would be a Benjen in the story if his story led to no where.. Just my two cents, unless Howland is gonna spill everything that went on between Benjen and Brandon and why Benjen took the black, etc.( I don't think Howland knows that part) . If the Nights King is a Stark maybe he's holding Benjen captive. If not, Bran said early in aGoT that he thinks the Children helped Benjen .(I tend to believe that, or that he's at Hardhome)
How is it that Brandon the Breaker campaigned against the Night's King when they found out he was sacrificing to the Others if the Night's Watch allow Craster to sacrifice to the Others.
too bad you dont do this live!
Purely in his intent is the Night King trying to free the people of Westeros from their yoke of feudalism? Or is he just a bad guy? I feel like he was a Stark who met his breaking point with the world as is.
Totally different books to show. Ok, this will start sounding nuts, but when I get to the end your mind will be literally blown.
The fact that things seem off with the maester is hard to ignore. But we all owe them an apology for a few mistakes. We all made assumptions because of the way the history was presented. The show hasn't figures this out so, book only.
First, what we have to understand is the empire of the dawn began 12000 years ago or so. The god on earth left the empire or something and took his pearl to the silver sea, but he left his son the Pearl Emperor to rule for another thousand years.
Ok, so I was just having some fun comparing Norse and Welsh Myth to the books. Was looking at Arthur and realized Bran is a Fisher king. A king and is sick or injured legs preventing him for going anywhere. That was fun, so if he fits that bit, anything else?
Well..
I looked as ravens. I'd forgotten how many corvid species there are. Ravens = Bran = Shrikes (google) = Shrykes = land of the Shrykes? = Bran the blessed. Ya, he has a cool cauldron that's lines with mother of PEARL, and it rwsurecrs people.
Fisher King = Fisher Queens?
Pearl = Pearl emp?
Starks = stars?
So bran the builder after the long night built the 5 forts too
Ok, still trying to be solid on details, but a couple more things. I don't know the exact details, but something happened to turn up the temperature. The Others can t stay home anymore. Every year more of the North thaws and joins the see. The less cold Beyond the Wall the 're less room they have. At some point they will all be up against the wall. That's why it's cold, the others are driven south every day
Honest feed back. Debunk if you can...
Fisher King
Arthur legend, wounded/sick king trapped in castle, almost always wound is legs/groin. Waits for brave knight to help.
Fisher King = Welsh Myth = Bran the Blessed
Bran has magic cauldron that revives the dead, cauldron lined with mother of... Pearl...
Pearl = pearl emperor?
Fisher King = Fisher Queen?
Fisher queen = Pearl Emperor...
Fisher queen begets Huzor Amai = Azor Ahai?
AA begets Bran, Jon, Sansa, Arya? Hmmm
Raven, crow = corvid = shrike (ya, same family)
Shrike = shryke = land of Shrykes near gray waste?
Hmm
Bran = crow = shryke = stark?
Hightower = Citadel = maesters = raven = shryke?
Hightower = shryke?
Hmm, What's Hightower's real name btw? I can only think of one character who's name may not be spoken... You don't think the night king would build a citadel and a campaign to make everyone forget him? NK...
Hightower = higher mysteries = necromancy = NK? OMG!!!
Ok, now knock it down, lol
Maybe the two whites that where brought in were able to rise south of the wall because they were escorted in by they're living brothers of the nights watch ?
Yeah I thought its possible that the wall itself is a dead zone for the wights. Like they are all good north of the wall, and all good south of the wall, but can't cross the threshold.
Did the hymn for spring ever get released?
No, it's been delayed again. We'll update as soon as we know more.
i would have rather had a better giant irish elk than a cgi polar bear....:)
Ah, back when the show was great and it seemed alright to consider show canon for book speculation. Season 4 was the last great season, apart from Asha at the Dreadfort.
Lukasz Przek yessir
All my favourite characters have died in anticlimactic ways (even Walder Frey while cool, had no buildup so felt forced)
Littlefinger retired from scheming to get his throat cut.
Roose Bolton ok I guess 😏
There just seems to be no real depth to the story since grrm stopped being named in credits.
The worst thing I can say about the show is now it’s only a tv show
(McNulty voice) *i had such high hopes for us*
😔
Did old Nan die when Ramsey took Winterfell? I don't remember if that was ever explicitly stated
+A. Leander Haynes they say the old people were taken captive to the dreadfort or something like that. I think she is still alive.
Yes she's listed as a captive at the Dreadfort in the A Feast For Crows appendix, along with a bunch of the other serving women etc; Palla for example, possibly some men too.
Has anyone ever mentioned that you, Aziz, sound like Chris Hardwick?
I like him, so I'll take it!
Jon could be on the wall after being sent back for killing Dany. So he is up there and spots a pale woman from up top. The woman is Dany!! He finds her and takes her as his queen and they start the beginning of another long night!!! 😆
Would be pimp actually and they better bring Dany back to lol
The Night´s King is clearly... Batman! Confirmed, Ben Affleck is the Nights King!!!
The hardest thing for me about listening to others recap books or review or predict, is how badly they pronounce names. I actually try to sound out the names and figure out how it would actually be pronounced. Wht set this one off was 'skA-gos', when its spelled and in a phonic sense is pronounced ska-GOES. I know I will get shit for this, but I dont give a shit.
Shawn Butler phonetics are irrelevant when you've actually heard the author pronounce the word :)
There's this theory that Night's King == The Last Hero =? Brandon the Builder whence the number 13.
Woot!
1:02:55 this seems like a perfectly reasonable trope. I mean obviously it's what's at fault for most of what is wrong in this world. Those damn women!! :D
Old school HOW vid
Dany Flint moral could be dishonesty will bite you in the butt
they did have writing
They had runes and pictograms, as in our own history. Quite basic and open-to-interpretation.
Love the video i just got one question...how does blood raven not know about that door at the nights fort shouldnt he knew about that door if he was lord commander for 12 years
The sphinx is a girl?
Brandon Blackfyre One of the Sand Snakes, Sarella Sand. Sarella backward is Alleras. They boast the same general appearance, as described by those around them, they have the same ethnic heritage-comprised of “a little of this, a little of that,” like a Sphinx-they are both highly intelligent and cunning, and Doran Martell even notes that Sarella cannot be detained because she’s in Old Town playing a “game.” It can be assumed that this game is her entering the Citadel under the guise of a male scholar.
LOL 1:30:40. super unintentional racist joke
Literally just thought the same thing😂😂😂
nice hair :p
wait a second? Summer's a boy?
+Andre Coleman yes indeed. Each wolf matches the gender of the Stark that adopted them.
Fisting...
shes a fox.
Fools of westerns ????????
