Tuukka Haapaniemi - Vocal Range

  • Finnish basso profundo and acapella bass Tuukka Haapaniemi is quite possibly the world’s best and most versatile bass singer alive today. Having started singing as a high boy soprano in a girls’ choir with a soprano high C, his voice changed dramatically, enabling him to sing bass around the world with the Finnish Acapella group ‘Club For Five’ who’ve been together for around 20 years.
There’s two people I want to thank for helping with this video, 1 being Cole Fountain for helping me tune and watch some notes, the 2nd person being Mr Haapaniemi himself. He very kindly sent me clips, taught me about how his voice works, provided information of registers and was a great person to talk to, and even analysed his voice for me with his brother Sampo Haapaniemi (a classically trained baritone singer) so a big thanks to him and his brother for helping with this too.
Seeing as Tuukka doesn’t have a video dedicated to his range prior to this, I wanted to showcase it more, hence the longer video with 5 clips per low note. I also wanted to include lots of live clips as Tuukka prefers them more and he believes it’s a better demonstration of someone’s range and singing ability as it’s an unedited performance.
In hindsight I probably would’ve started the high notes higher up, but I think his high notes generally end around B4/C5 as the 5th octave notes are miscellaneous in context, but still definitely countable and worth listening to. I choose G3 as the start point for highs as that’s what is marked on an old TRP thread that I got a few songs off of - usually a credible site.
    Questionable notes:
?5: Random whoops, woos or exclamations are too brief to warrant inclusion.
G4: Levottomat laulut (Live) • Levottomat laulut (Live)
    “No, I sing the E4😊”
    F#1: • Club For Five - Sinun ... 0:25
“No, I sing a D2 modal. The baritone sings a fifth (A2) and that might cause the ”under tone” to appear?”
    Eb1: open.spotify.c... 3:55
“I don’t remember singing that (octave doubling), so it is probably artificially made - shifted with a computer.”
    • You're The Voice - Aca... 4:25
    They are artificial.
?1/?0: random slides are too brief to be counted and not sung with melodic intent.
    B0: • Tummat silmät, ruskea ...
    “No, just a regular B1😄”
G#0???: / 10153784829925944 Audacity seemed to suggest this note slid around between Eb0 and A0 so I decided to leave it out as I couldn’t find a solid pitch, though I believe it is meant to be a G#0
F0?: 4th Facebook fry note www.facebook.c..., again, audacity seemed to suggest it slides around a bit around up to G# ish from F0 so I’m not counting it
Clarifying some terms used in this video:
Falsetto: I’m using falsetto as an umbrella term for anything above chest voice as I can’t reliably hear the difference and mark it correctly.
Background: generally I mean anything that is not a lead part or that is in the background or in harmony and not the main melody.
Chest-fry: Tuukka actually told me that he starts mixing from around a D2 downwards and most of the big, voluminous resonant notes are partly mixed with varying ratios of chest and fry. The exception to this is the breathy chest notes which he says are pure chest: “When I sing very sofly, those low notes are chest-modal. We experimented (with my brother) and we think that most of my low notes, depending on the phrase and function, are mixed chest-fry. The starting point on when I ”turn” to the mix is maybe somewhere around Eb/D2 if I have to go to an A1 for example.”
Growl: Tuukka has a few growled notes out there, most not significant enough to warrant inclusion: “Also the ”fire breathing”, I don’t sing with that, I don’t make distictive pitches with it. I use to end a drum solo (a big bang😄) or just to finish a song with subwoofers on fire for a brief moment😁”
These low fry notes are countable in my opinion as they’re sung with purpose and melodic intent. They’re well controlled and have more than enough time and resonance behind them, and are of significant enough quality to warrant inclusion in this video.
There will undoubtedly be mistakes in pitch or in classification of vocal register as his voice is surprisingly hard to analyse, or I may have mistaken his voice for someone else in the band, but please let me know of any glaring errors.
I do not own any of the music, pictures or videos in this video. All content belongs to the owners (mostly Club For Five). Tuukka was aware of me making this video.

All the classical pieces (except 13:25, 15:06 and 17:35 I believe (last two are the same piece)) are from the ‘Rautavaara: Vigilia’ album recorded in 2019 by The Helsinki Chamber Choir. He sung as the lead bass and also joined in the choral parts at some points.
      Spotify link here: open.spotify.com/album/3sU5n7Pl6SAvnpXV7BVP01?si=71EcgoARRzuC2uDreUn2ww

13:25 is ‘We Praise Thee’ with him in the profundo section. I believe he was only around 23 ish years old in this recording ua-cam.com/video/RSA7vRxYJFg/v-deo.html
15:06 and 17:35 are from Karl Jenkins’ Stabat Mater. Tuukka spent the whole recording mostly in the first octave down to the D1. I believe he was in the same room as Karl at the time of recording it. “No pressure 😅” he told me.
