I’m so glad I found your channel. Spent a very frustrating day trying to get my Shure Lav mic to work with my new Tascam x8 only to find the Shure is not a ‘true’ Lav cos it does not use power… very frustrating… this video, like many in your channel is clear, illuminating and very helpful! Keep up the great work!
RØDE Microphones I am fan of you..... Yesterday I bought Tascam DR 60d mkii, previously I was using Zoon H4N. In H4n I was using an a lav mic with plug in power now for some reason it's not with me..so I have now dr60d mkii now I m connecting the mic to 3/4 connector on Tascam source selected3/4 plug in power on, gain tried min to max, tried mono, stereo but nothing is happening pre recording voice is visible on Tascam display but when checked the sdcard but copying files in laptop voice is tool low...can u plz help?
Oh thank you Curtis. I've been ignorantly using an XLR to TRS adapter for years on my NTG-2, without a thought of risks in other situations. The fact it worked seamlessly gave me ignorant confidence when I got a few other combinations of XLR microphones. Fortunately I haven't stepped in the muck, yet, but your video opened my eyes to risks.
@@curtisjudd 5 years on and there are people like me entering into the video world with no clue. the audio on this video has such clarity and depth its amazing. watching some videos on youtube, there are people with much to learn still!
Great video! I can only echo the other comments about you being one of the few informative, straight to the point UA-camr's out there. Looking forward for more videos!
Some people have knowledge, some others have clarity, but it's rare for one person to have both. I've learned so so much - just trying to get to grips, no pun intended, with smartphone and DSLR microphone technology. Many thanks Curtis
Thank you so much! I just started my ASMR channel and I have purchased a Blue Yeti and it has A HUGE amount of hissing and it I have no audio sound when I plug it into my Canon. So frustrating.
Another thing to add onto the point of short lavalier cables - if you can afford it investing in a Zoom H1 or similar that you can pop in the talent's back pocket is a great way to get 'wireless' audio
Fantastic video -- I haven't done external audio into my DSLR before and wanted to clearly understand using lavaliers with 3.5mm TS vs TRS. Exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
Hi Curtis, I know it's an old post but my question still probably applies: I have a microphone with a 18" TRRS jack that I use to record with my Android phone. I also got a TRRS male/female cable and I'm trying to use the mic with my computer. When I plug it into the mic port of my sound card I get nothing. I suspect that the female jack of the sound card doesn't accept the three ring type? What kind of adapter or cable do I need to make the mic signal go to the right place? Thanks for you great videos!
Hi Juan, I'm not positive, but many sound cards have separate ports for microphones and headphones. Usually a TRS connector will work with those types of microphone inputs. So you'd need a TRRS to TRS adapter I would guess.
@@curtisjudd My sound card has separate inputs for mic and speakers or headphones and also another input for aux output. Apparently a TRRS to TRS adapter won't work either because the TRS leaves out the inner ring of the TRRS which is the mic. I did more research and it looks like the only way is an adapter the goes from TRRS from the mic to 2 separate jacks for headphones and mic and I would use only the mic jack into the computer. www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B087CZB5RL/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Thanks anyway!
This is crazy good info for someone just starting out as a sound engineer. Also needed this when trying to connect my lav system to a mixer. All I needed was some plug in power. Thanks!
OK, this might be the best explanation on the mishmash of 3.5mm cables. I've been using XLR my entire career, so I've always been leery of the new audio options for shooting on a DSLR. Thank you, Curtis!!
I find all of your videos well prepared and accompanied by well thought out information. Your presentation is professional. Your demeanor is relaxed and very personable. Thank you for your time and skill as a teacher for learning about light and sound concerning video.
Great video! I appreciate all the info. I just got a tascam dr05x and I now realize my microphone is a TRRS and the input for this recorder must not be the same.
@Curtis Judd: Thank you so much for very useful knowledge in your video! I have a question, at 1:58 you said the cables come along with 3.5 mm are UNBALANCED, so the cables come along with 6.3 mm are what: UNBALANCED also or BALANCED?
Hi haihoisua, 6.3mm cables generally come in two types: TS and TRS. TS cables are unbalanced cables generally used to connect an instrument to a preamp or DI. TRS cables are balanced connectors usually used to patch audio from one device to another.
@@curtisjudd Thank you for your answer! Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the TRS cables come along with 3.5 mm or TRS cables come along with 6.3 mm they are both wired the same! Because of wiring the same, so the term “Unbalanced” or “Balanced” will be totally depended on WHERE you connect to! I will give an example: The TRS 3.5 mm cable come from/to headphone is “Unbalanced Stereo”. But if we use the same TRS 3.5 mm to connect to Line Input TRS on the mixer (ex: Mixer Dynacord CMS1000) then that cable will be “Balanced Mono”. PS: For sure, we need to use adapter from 3.5 mm to 6.3 mm to connect that cable to Line Input on Mixer. How do you think, Curtis?
@@haihoisua You are technically correct, however, in 99% of cases, 6.3mm TRS cables are used with equipment which sends a balanced mono signal over the cable. In 99.9% of cases with 3.5mm TRS, the devices to which the cable are connected send a stereo or dual mono unbalanced signal over the cable.
can we use TRRS cable for connecting zoomh1n. In my case this cable is not working when I am connecting zoomh1 to my Nikon d3200. Do I have to buy a TRS cable ?
It was a really helpful video i been looking for months to find out which is the type of oin on my aiwa mic and because of this i helped me to find that my mic has a "TS"pin.thank you!
Thank you for providing this informative video. I have a lavaliere mic, but I can't get it to work with my TASCAM 60D Mkii I have also tried the Phanton power but still don't work. Can you offer guidance on this issue? thank you Stephen Cullen
Best way to confirm whether your microphone needs power is to look at the specifications from the manufacturer. If you're working with a modern laptop - anything made in the last 5 years or so - almost all of them have a 3.5mm TRRS headset jack. These almost always supply the necessary 3-5V plugin power that most headsets or lavalier microphones need.
THANK YOU SO MUCHHH for this video, I finally understand the basic principle of microphone, nobody seems to talk about this and you explained it perfectly. I've got 2 questions: 1. I'm using canon eos M50 right now, and I wanted to use XLR mic so I can cut off a lot of background noises, is it possible? or should I just use TRS mic 2. If I use a TRRS mic and then I use an adapter to TRS, will it still produce a lot of noises?
Hi Repsyzz, 1) the best way to get an XLR microphone into a camera like the M50 is to use a mixer of some sort. Something like a ZOOM F4, F6, or F8, or a Sound Devices MixPre. You can also use more traditional mixing boards like a Mackie VLZ4. 2) It will produce the same amount of noise - the adapter will not reduce the noise, just enable it to work with your camera.
Hi! Great and informative video! I’m currently using a tascam dr-05 and was wondering if you could link to the video where you show how to make sound come out of both channels versus only the left in editing. I would greatly appreciate it, thanks so much!
I would test the Takstar with a dedicated camera if you have or can borrow one just to see if the static is still there. Then you'll know whether it is a problem with the mic or a problem with the adapter or phone.
Excelent Video as usual but i have a question. I own a Deity S-Mic 2s and I would like to plug it into my Canon R5c and use it as a Shotgun mic on top of the camera. This Mic as you know needs 48v of Phantom power... I did solved that issue with the Xvive P1... and works great but what I am not sure is if I need an Unbalanced or Balance XLR female cable to a male TRS 3.5. ? I am sorry about my grammar lol.
Very informative video, finally getting some answers. I had a question related to this: I've been looking for a microphone for my camera but can't quite figure out what format I need for it. I finally managed to find the specification in the camera description, but all it says is "mini pin jack (3.5 mm diameter); supports optional ME-1 stereo microphone" which is not helping me figure out what kind of plug I can use for it. Would you happen to know?
@@leacorsetti3778 Oh yes, the Nikons all have 3.5mm TRS microphone inputs. Almost any camera-top shotgun microphone will work with your camera such as the RODE VideoMics and the DEITY V-Mic models.
Great Video 👍 lot of good information thanks. I still would like to know I have a Sony a9 and I use Sony UWPD 11/42 lavaliere wireless system. I wanted to know is it ok to use the mic that comes with this system directly in the camera for cases when the wireless is not needed. I tried but I am not getting any levels in the camera tried adjusting the gain in the camera too didn't work. Please advise thanks
Hi Rajat, you'll probably want to contact Sony support on that. It is my understanding that Sony wires its lavalier microphones differently than other manufacturers so it might not work directly with the camera. Best wishes!
Thank you for your video. We have a professional sony camera and we would like to connect it to our mixer. The camera audio port is 3.5mm. Do you have any recommendation about how to do it?
Thank you for your explanation. I own a rode wireless go ii, in which, the transmitter has a trs input port for lavaliers. The one I have (boya by-m1) has a trrs jack . When I connect the boya lavalier to the rode, I need to set the switch of the boya to camera, so that I can get audio on the rode. Will this harm the rode in any way? The sound seem similar when using just the rode or both but I'm afraid if I'm doing the right thing. Will I need the converter TRRS to TRS even if it is working?
At around 4:00 you warn to not use a 3.5 to XLR on a 3.5 mic, because it will fry the mic with phantom power. But what if you have a 3.5 phantom powered mic (i have the movo vxr10)? Will using a 3.5 to XLR work for my specific mic? It is phantom powered according to the manufacturer.
Well the microphone i have is the movo vxr10. I cant actually find anything about it on the manufacturers site about it beign phantom powered, but ive seen multiply other people say it is. Could those people have been confused/mistaken? Im not really sure now.
Also, if my audio interface has a switch to turn on and off the phantom power, i could just test it without the power first without possibly frying the mic, right?
I want to connect a Audio-Technica AT831b (Cardioid Condenser Lavalier Microphone with battery pack, XLR out) to a Rode Wireless Pro transmitter (3.5mm TRS Input). There are two XLR to 3.5 cables I found, one is cheaper basic cable that is just XLR to 3.5; the other is the same but with "Low to High Impedance Matching Transformer". Do you know if the basic cable should work, or will I need the impedance matching? Thanks for any help!
Hi. A simple question. I have an iPhone six and use a TRRS jack with a mic. I want to use this with it with a home, cordless phone 2,5 mm.. Which adaptor should I purchase to make sure the mic works with the home 2.5? Thank you. Your expertise is impressive. Bernard
Hi Bernard, that’s a tough one that may require some experimentation. As a start, you’ll need 3.5mm TRRS to 2.5mm cable but I’m not sure whether the phone requires TRS or TRRS. May need to contact the manufacturer to confirm. Best wishes!
Hi. Have watched a lot of your videos over the last couple of years. Fantastic content for the Semipro/not dedicated audio-person. Thanks for sharing :D
Thank you so much for this video, I had purchased a sony a7iii 2 days back, I'm facing a problem, when I connect a BOYA lavalier mic to my sony a7iii it's not recording audio, But the in body mic records the audio properly, Iam just worried, that is this a mic port problem on the camera. ? Or else is it like the lavalier mic doesn't support camera ? This video made me relax i will check for some converter of TRRS >> TRS
Hey Curtis, I just recently bought the RODE NTG4 and the ZOOM H4n pro recorder. What recommendation would you give for the connection as I am worried the XLR-3.5mm adapter will fry the mic. Great video thanks :)
Keeping the shotgun mic within 18 to 24 inches is a really helpful tip. I find that with even a mini shotgun mic, I'm able to get great sound if it's within about a foot to a foot-and-a-half distance away.
Hi Curtis, Thank you for this video. I have a rode smartlav+. that I now want to connect directly to my camera which has TRS input. Do you think it's ok to use the rode TRRS to TRS converter AND the TSR rode entension cable to make this happen? Or would it be risky to use two addtional cables like this? (I find reccording audio and video separately too challenging and want to do it both at once)
Hi Megan, It should work with the adapter and extension cables. I would stick with the RODE adapter and cable as they seem to be higher quality than many other budget brands. The main risk to watch out for is accidentally pulling out the connectors while shooting or someone tripping over the cables. Best wishes!
I have a question I am planning to buy a Sennheiser MKH 416 and use that on top of my Canon 80D will I be able to connect the mic and the camera directly or do I need some kind of amplifier or SLR adaptor for best audio output
Might be a dumb question, but that TRS cable that you use to plug the mic into your DSLR camera, is that the same as the aux cord you use to play music in cars? They look the same
As always, very good video, so helpful! Should I use a male TRS to male TRS adapter cable when connecting a Zoom H5 recorder to a DSLR Canon camera? My AudioTechnica microphone is connected with an XLR cable to the Zoom H5. I've been getting a lot of static during post production when I use a 3.5 attenuated cable between the camera and Zoom H5, we cut out the static but it's very irritating to listen to. (I've tried 3 differnt 3.5 cables, cleaned the ends, and the static continues.) Would a TRS to TRS adapter help?
Hey Curtis - if you don't mind, I've got an issue I'm trying to resolve. I'm trying to split my TRRS signal from my MixAmp (gaming headset mixer/amplifier), which normally just connects my TRRS headphones, to both my headphones and stereo speakers simultaneously. I bought a 1M2F TRRS splitter and it works fine, until I connect the TRS male from the stereo speakers to the second female connection, then the microphone capabilities go away on my TRRS headset. Is there a solution for this? (More simply - is there a way to split a TRRS female signal to (male 3.5mm TRRS headphones with a microphone) AS WELL as [male 3.5mm TRS speakers], while retaining the ability to use the microphone on those headphones?)
Hi Dutch The Hooligan, It should be possible but it all depends on exactly how things are wired internally (TRRS unfortunately can be wired several different ways). I would try adapting the speakers with a RODE SC4. This *might* or might not work but worth a try: amzn.to/2E1drst Good luck!
Haha I was actually going to try that! Glad you recommended it. Gonna buy it with your affiliate link. I'm also an affiliate, but I'll be sure to use your link immediately before purchase, so hopefully it goes to you instead. Thanks!
can i mesure the original plugin power provided by the recorder/transmitter ? or can i use anny plugin power mic, for any plugin power mic in, at any recorder ?
sir i have nikon d5300 camera with 3.5mm jack and i want to connect it with my Boya BY-M1 mic .But it is not working however both camera jack and mic plug are of 3.5mm.please guide me what to do now ?
Thanks for the great video. The TRRS plug that you mentioned, would that work for DSLR camera? Because I am thinking to get the connector that would work for both DSLR camera and phone. Thanks.
Hi Paxil, most DSLRs have TRS stereo 3.5mm mic inputs. Depending on the wiring of the mic and camera, TRRS might work, depends on wiring. I would stick with TRS.
Would you please suggest a cheap Lav mic I can use with my Android mobile phone!? I'm now planning to record audio on my phone and later sync with the video. Thank you for your prompt response

Great information. I have a Shure SC4 wireless system. There is an XLR out that I would like to feed into my Samsung S5. Would you happen to know if I can I just find a XLR female to TRRS wire adapter and plug the 3.5 TRRS into the cell phone?

Hi Curtis, really good video! I just got a lav Yoga me-101 it's a cheap lav that use a small battery. The problem is tha in my Canon 5D Mark II get strange noises plus hiss and with an adapter to my iPhone it record pretty well. I'm thinking if it has to do with the 5v from the canon plus the battery? Can you help me in that? thank a lot
Hi Gabriel, I haven't use the 5D so I'm not positive but I do recall that the original 5DmkII firmware had an automatic gain feature which would do things similar to what you describe. Not sure whether they ever updated the firmware so that you could turn that off but it is worth researching. Best wishes!
Hi, a question if you can assist please: I am trying to connect a BM700 condenser mic to an iphone via an TRRS adapter but doesnt work. The mic doesnt have its own power source which from your video (if i understand correctly) that can be an issue if the device connected with doesnt support the mic requirement. Would that be the problem? Most online instructional videos claim that you can connect an XLR condenser mic to an iphone with an adapter cable but doesn't seem to work for me. any suggestions appreciated
Hi Dimitris, correct, you need an audio adapter that supplies both power and amplifies the audio from the mic like these. An adapter cable is not enough on its own: SmartRig+: ua-cam.com/video/zm6WCGIQ7ak/v-deo.html iRig Pre HD: ua-cam.com/video/7gE5l7aU8F0/v-deo.html

Hi Doctor Rauram, I'm afraid I'm not sure. In that case, it is probably best to contact Canon support to confirm. They will probably request details on the specific USB to 3.5mm adapter you're considering. Best wishes.
Really informative video! I have a question hope you might be able to help. Is there anyway I can plug up my Sx740HS powershot camera to my blue yeti?? Or do I just basically have to record Audio and video separately and then sync with an app like garage band? I hope this wasn’t to confusing lol. Thanks!
Hi, you might be able to feed the headphone jack out to the camera with a cable, assuming the camera has a microphone input, but you’d have to try it to see how the quality turns out. I’m betting you’ll get the best quality by recording separately and syncing in post.
Great Video Curtis! I had a simple question. I purchased a TS 3.5mm lapel microphone and when i plug it into my Canon 5d mark ii the mic works great but when I attempt to plug it into the line in on my Zoom h6 i dont get any sound. I saw you were using a smaller zoom and was just curious if I have my zoom's line in on the XY configured incorrectly or if there is a way to make the TS 3.5mm microphone wired without frying it. Any help would be great, if not no worries, I understand you must be really busy. thanks!
+Curtis Judd you are awesome! totally worked great! I also discovered that the screen on the H6 when close to the lapel mic cable creates some high pitched frequencies. Must be some electromagnetic issue that interferes with the cable. I have just been making sure the cable dosent come close to the screen.
Glad it worked! The Mike has an unbalanced cable which is prone to picking up interference like that but sounds like you've got a strategy for dealing with that. Happy recording!
Thank you for a such a great resource! I have two Audio Technica ATR 3350's. they both work separately but when I use a 3.5mm splitter into the microphone jack of a Sony AX33 -they both don't work... Any ideas? I am slowing go through all your video! Thank you!
Hi Jon, I think the splitter needs to be wired specifically to make that work, though I'm not 100% sure. May need someone who knows a bit more about electronics.
Thanks for the info. But I still have a problem and maybe you can help me. I have an audio-technica ATR3350is, is work fine with my reflex camera. The TRS to TRRS adapter included not working. Now I get a new adapter and working with imac and laptop, but nor work with iphone or ipad. What kind of adapter we need to use the mic with mobile devices? is possible?
Hi Leandro, most mobile devices have a 3.5mm TRRS headset jack so the TRRS adapter *should* work. Might be best to contact Audio Technica support. Best wishes!
Hi doctorplatano, No, Canon cameras have a TRS input jack. You could use the SC3 adapter with a TRRS microphone and a Canon DSLR: bhpho.to/2SYGDuP Best wishes!
Thank you for sharing this information with us. I bought a Rode M3 microphone (internally powered) and a balanced adapter cable (XLR to TRS) for my Nikon D810 camera . However, now the camera only records one channel (left). Is this normal?
Hey now I just recently got an older Panasonic AG-196 Reporter VHS camera ( made in 2001 ) and I cannot for the life of me, even in the owners manual find out if this camera will except an external stereo condenser mic or a mono condenser mic only. Plan on using this camera for live rock band stage recordings from the back of the room. Upon research seems an x/y mic would be the best application. It does have 3.5 input jack. Hope to hear from you. Thanks.
if the manual doesn't say, the two main options that come to mind are 1) contact Panasonic support or 2) find a friend or retailer who will let you plug in some mics to the camera and see what you get. Best wishes!
Hey mate great video! I want to ask you a question but it is quite irrelevant. I have aa electronic drum and in the manual it says it needs a stereo jack for aux in. And when I plug a mono jack I can only hear in one ear. Is this because of the stereo and mono difference?
Hi Ege, yes. It sounds like the drum output is a stereo TRS (unbalanced). So if you want to get both channels (left and right) you'll either need to go into a stereo input, or get a splitter cable and use two 1/4" mono inputs. Good luck!
Hi Curtis, have a question, I have a Olympus OMD EM-5 MK2 camera and a Zoom H6. will it work and doesn't burn my microphone if I use the " XLR to 3.5mm" cable from what you recommended ?
Hi Gary, it would be fine to use a 3.5mm stereo mini jack cable - with a TRS plug - from the H6 to Olympus. No need or option for XLR in this case. XLR only works for the audio inputs on the H6.
Hi Curtis. Thanks so much for these videos. They are excellent! Could you tell me what is the best budget lav mic to buy for my Zoom H6? Made a mistake of buying one with a mini XLR and I don't want to make another mistake.
Hi Curtis. I just received this mic yesterday. Been trying to use it with my Zoom H6. It's only working when I plug into the X/Y Mic Capsule. Not working with the XLR/TRS inputs. I am even using an TRS to fit the 3.5 mm jack. Would really appreciate any suggestions on how I could make it work. Turned on phantom power, etc but no success.
Hey Curtis, thanks for the video. I'm shooting on a GH5 with a an AT 875R condenser mic. It is not self-powered, and when plugged in to my camera mic input with an XLR to 3.5mm jack, it seems to work fine, and sounds good when in Premiere. Is there any reason not to do this? I want to be careful not to damage the camera preamp or the microphone. Thanks!
Hi Jordan, Wow, I would not have expected it to work well without supplying any power. I don't think you're at risk of damaging the microphone if it isn't receiving any power. Happy recording!
Hi Curtis, Do you know a way that I can add battery power to a TRS mic? I use my Rode video micro on the 5DII and it works, but my canon vixia jack will not power the mic on its own. The video micro needs about 3.6v. Your picture quality and sound are very nice BTW. Thanks
Thanks. This is the only power module I've seen: darren-nemeth.squarespace.com/stereo-and-mono-microphone-9-volt-battery-power-supply/ It supplies 9V but that is within the range typically required for "plugin power" microphones (3-10V). Good luck!
Hey i have a little question. I have a ts microphone, will i be able to use it in my phone if i buy a trs to trrs adapter????????? I read that trs is just like ts, but stereo. So if i do this will my mono mic become streo? Thanks!!!
I tested with my Audio Technica ATR-3350 lavalier microphone which has a TS plug into my iPhone and it did NOT work, unfortunately. I would recommend instead one of these affordable lavalier microphones which are designed to work with smartphones: ua-cam.com/video/CZKs1U1GA84/v-deo.html Good luck!
Hi Curtis, great video. I plugged in my Rode Videomicro into my interface through adaptor and gave 48V phantom power for about 0.2 seconds. Hope it is not fried, but if it is, would it be obvious to me, i.e. the mic not functioning at all, or would it be just little reduction in sound quality? I really want to know if the mic is fried or not. Thanks.
Hi Yong, it could be fine or it could be damaged or it could be completely destroyed. Plug it back in without phantom power, just plugin power and test it out. That's the only way to know for sure. Best wishes!
Hi, I want to use my akg d5 as an external microphone for the zoom h1n. Id like to know what cable I need for it to work. XLR(female) to 3.5mm TS or TRS? Thank you!
Hi Baron, you could try an XLR female to 3.5mm TRS but I don't think that the H1 will do very well with the d5 because it is a dynamic microphone and needs a LOT of gain.
Great information. I got a situation for you. I have a Rode Videomic Mic 3.5 and a Zoom H4N. I would like to use the Zoom H4 for a interface for podcasting along with a mic that has a xlr output. How would be able to mount that rode mic along with the xlr mic?
Hi! Just started my UA-cam experience with higher quality audio. Bought for this a Zoom h5 recorder, to record some field sounds and stuff. But when I plugged in my lavalier mic it does not work. Probably because it’s smartphone one. Which lavalier would you recommend if I have around 100 eur budget! Many thanks 🙏
You could get a TRRS to TRS adapter (link in the description). I don't know of any great $100 lavalier mics unfortunately. But if you can stretch to $150, the DEITY W.Lav Pro is worth considering: ua-cam.com/video/4-kM_xN5sPA/v-deo.html
Hi Curtis, i have a question and i hope you can help me out. I bought the NTG-2 too, and i bought an adaptor XLR-TRS stereo, with which i connect the mic to my camera (canon VIxia HF R500) but i can not record anything. I also tried to connect the mic to a voice recorder and nothing, i just capture a very low and distorted sound when i scream like crazy. Thanks in advance and thanks for the video
Hi Fernando, first, you have a fresh battery in the NTG2? Also, I have not tested that camera before, but the NTG2 does not have the strongest output signal so it usually works best with a proper XLR based mic preamp. I have not successfully used it with an XLR to TRS adapter.

Hi chris i am running into a snag here, i have the zoom H6, i want to record using the rode filmaker kit I bought the rode VXLR 3.5mm to xlr adapter then plug in the receiver into the vxlr but got no sound when i pushed it in all the way. i got sound when i pushed it in half way. Whats going on here, can you help
Hi Joe, sounds like there's an issue in there somewhere. Does the filmmaker kit work ok when you plug it into a camera with a 3.5mm input? You'll want to eliminate the VXLR and see if the problem still persists. If it does, then the issue is either the RODELink receiver, output jack, or cable. If not, then the issue is the VXLR. Good luck!
Hi Curtis. Great video. Can I ask what happens if you put phantom power to a dynamic mic? They accept XLR connectors and you've said they "don't require power". Thanks.
Usually nothing bad with dynamic microphones. But best to turn it off to be safe and potentially save battery drain on your preamp/recorder. On the other hand, if you apply phantom power to a ribbon microphone, you can severely damage it, depending on its design. But these microphones are pretty rare.
You're looking for a dynamic (non-condenser) XLR lavalier microphone? Shure makes one and I used to own it but it was really hard to use and it required a really, really strong preamp. Cannot remember the model number but maybe something like the CS11?
@@curtisjudd Thx for your advice! Could it have been the Shure SM11-CN? I saw it (accidentally while googling) on Amazon where you wrote a little review about it www.amazon.com/Shure-SM11-CN-Omnidirectional-Lavalier-Connector/dp/B0002GZHQ4 😉So, I understand now that a 'normal' condenser lavalier mic would be the better choice, i.e. they need Phantom power - even when they are XLR wired. I gonna take a look, again, at your YT review about lavalier mics.
Hi Curtis... I looked over your channel for some advice on suitable brands of 3.5mm cables, but I couldn't find much. Would you be so kind as to advise me on a good brand of: - 3.5mm Male to 3.5mm Male, 1.5' length. (Zoom H1 Line Out to GH4) - 3.5mm Male to 3.5mm Female, 10' length. (Zoom H1 Line In to MicJ 044 Lav) - Your recommendation for making the MicJ 044_MonoTS to StereoTRS Thank you Curtis... really appreciate your help.
Ciqu Films for the 3.5mm male to 3.5mm female 10' length, I like the RODE VC1: amzn.to/1d8p42k I don't have specific recommendations for the other two because I don't use those, but I have had very good experiences with monoprice.com for most cables I've needed over the years.
Question: will I fry my mic if I use a microUSB condenser mic (Shure) designed for smartphones, and plug-it into an XLR adapter and into my Focus Scarlett interface? Will the example you gave for not using Phantom power apply to this situation? I'm new at all this.....
Yes, if the XLR adapter does not convert the 48V phantom power from the Scarlett to 3-5V plugin power, you will damage your microphone. Furthermore, the Shure mic likely has a TRRS connector. So you would need two adapters: TRRS to TRS and a 3.5mm TRS to XLR adapter which also converts the power. The RODE VXLR+ adapter does the second. But be absolutely certain to get the + version.
Useful video. I'm shopping for a Canon EOS Rebel T series. Everything I read on Amazon says they don't have external microphones. Everything I find on UA-cam says they accept microphones, with adapters. Apparently the 3.5mm port doesn't accept 3.5mm microphones. Did you do anything on EOS? I'm researching before I buy. I typically won't and don't need the most recent EOS.
Hi John, I'm not specifically familiar with the Rebel series from Canon but I thought that the "I" versions of the cameras have microphone inputs and the non "I" versions do not. I could be mistaken on that. So for instance, the T6i should have a microphone input, but the T6 would not. Double check me on that, but I hope that helps.
@@curtisjudd thanks you. I do know the t3i seems to have a properly dedicated hole while the T3 seems to have a usb port. T3i also has amost megapixels compared to 12.5
So what microphone should I use for my canon eos 90d camera? I heard only XLR cables are OK, but I'm not sure how to find out whether my DSLR canon eos 90d supports that.
Thank you Curtis, for again this very informative video! One question: Do I need an adapter like the VXLR+ from Rode to make sure Phantompower from a audio recorder is transformed to plugin power? Or can I just switch of the phantom power in the settings of the audio recorder and the use a cheaper XLR-3.5TRS-adapter without 48v-3/4v transformation?
It depends on what you're connecting to the recorder. If the device does not need power, then you can use the standard VXLR and turn off phantom power. If the microphone needs plugin power, then you'll want to go with the VXLR+ or VXLR Pro.
Hello i use a SONY ECM-Z200 Mic with a Sony A7R. It's a TS jack type how can i change the mono input to stereo output in post production? Or is there an adapter to make TS audio hacks to TRS? Thanks in advance i really need help
Hi Héctor, in post, you'll just want to split up the stereo track into two mono tracks and get rid of the channel which had no sound on it. Exactly how you do that depends on the app you're using, but all of the major NLEs and DAWs have this capability.

I did more research and it looks like the only way is an adapter the goes from TRRS from the mic to 2 separate jacks for headphones and mic and I would use only the mic jack into the computer. www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B087CZB5RL/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Great video, very helpful. Thanks very much!
Question - do you have a recording on TRS and TRRS, specifically using TRS mics on a TRRS phone?
Hmm, I don't think I do. Did you have a specific question?
@@curtisjudd Thank you so much, Curtis! You have clarified a lot of my concerns!

Be sure to turn on plugin power in the menu. Best wishes!
Very good. Is there a way of knowing a) whether a 3.5mm lavalier requires power and b) whether the port (eg PC) supplies it?
Best way to confirm whether your microphone needs power is to look at the specifications from the manufacturer. If you're working with a modern laptop - anything made in the last 5 years or so - almost all of them have a 3.5mm TRRS headset jack. These almost always supply the necessary 3-5V plugin power that most headsets or lavalier microphones need.
THANK YOU SO MUCHHH for this video, I finally understand the basic principle of microphone, nobody seems to talk about this and you explained it perfectly. I've got 2 questions:
1. I'm using canon eos M50 right now, and I wanted to use XLR mic so I can cut off a lot of background noises, is it possible? or should I just use TRS mic
@@curtisjudd oh okay so It's probably for a permanent setup. Yes I get it now, thanks a lot Curtis

I have a Takstar sgc-698 with a Microphone adapter but when i connect it into my Iphone, it has a static sound or large soundwaves, any ideas?
I would test the Takstar with a dedicated camera if you have or can borrow one just to see if the static is still there. Then you'll know whether it is a problem with the mic or a problem with the adapter or phone.
I've tried it with a samsung phone and it works just fine, so why is it the Iphone 6s has problems with recording with the mic connected?
I'm sorry Patrick, I'm not sure. Perhaps there is something wrong with the iPhone's jack?

The mic doesnt have its own power source which from your video (if i understand correctly) that can be an issue if the device connected with doesnt support the mic requirement. Would that be the problem? Most online instructional videos claim that you can connect an XLR condenser mic to an iphone with an adapter cable but doesn't seem to work for me. any suggestions appreciated
Hi Dimitris, correct, you need an audio adapter that supplies both power and amplifies the audio from the mic like these. An adapter cable is not enough on its own:
SmartRig+: ua-cam.com/video/zm6WCGIQ7ak/v-deo.html
iRig Pre HD: ua-cam.com/video/7gE5l7aU8F0/v-deo.html
Thank you for these videos. I am a novice with streaming, and the info you provide has been excellent.
Thanks Lawrence.
Hi Mr. Judd, thanks for the clear explanation. Will a mini USB with 3.5 mm female adapter attached to a microphone work with Canon eos 1500D? If not, please guide me regarding the other best option. Thanks a lot in advance!
Hi Doctor Rauram, I'm afraid I'm not sure. In that case, it is probably best to contact Canon support to confirm. They will probably request details on the specific USB to 3.5mm adapter you're considering. Best wishes.
@@curtisjudd Thank you Mr. Judd.
Curtis Judd thanks for fast response!
Any help would be great, if not no worries, I understand you must be really busy. thanks!
Hi Jordan, in the menus there is an option for plugin power which you'll just need to turn on. Good luck!
Thanks. i may go the route of a separate recorder if i can't figure it out
Thanks for the info.
Dear Curtis: will a Canon DSLR also record audio properly if a TRRS plug is inserted? Thank you so much.
Yes.
Good luck!
I will try and see :) Thanks a lot
Hi Irene, the JK MicJ 044 is decent for the price: ua-cam.com/video/RBxOLnVxg3A/v-deo.html
If you decide to try this, I would go for this version for the H6: amzn.to/2ohHlB7
Nice and thanks! Nikon/Canon camera uses TRS or TRRS? I know TRRS has difference wiring, any reference for camera, camcorder?
Nikon and Canon use TRS inputs
All the info I needed in a short and super informative video. Thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Curtis - you just helped me hook up my new Blixxo + H1n in minimal time!
👍
Very well explained TS TRS and TRRS :)
👍
Hi, I want to use my akg d5 as an external microphone for the zoom h1n. Id like to know what cable I need for it to work. XLR(female) to 3.5mm TS or TRS? Thank you!
Hi Baron, you could try an XLR female to 3.5mm TRS but I don't think that the H1 will do very well with the d5 because it is a dynamic microphone and needs a LOT of gain.
@@curtisjudd Thank you! Then it would be better if Ill connect my mic to a mixer first and then to the zoom h1n?
@@micbaron Yes, exactly.
Great information. I got a situation for you. I have a Rode Videomic Mic 3.5 and a Zoom H4N. I would like to use the Zoom H4 for a interface for podcasting along with a mic that has a xlr output. How would be able to mount that rode mic along with the xlr mic?
You can plug the VideoMic Pro into the 3.5mm input on the back of the H4n. Then plug the XLR mic into one of the XLR inputs.
@@curtisjudd Thank you very much! Very useful. And you have superb channel! 👍👍👍
I happened to be on vacation right now and I mistakenly brought a TRRS extension cable for my Video Micro, can I use it for my mirrorless camera without issue?
Not sure, but give it a try. As long as you don't try to adapt to XLR and feed phantom power to the mic you shouldn't damage anything.
Hi there I have a
Tascam Dr 60d MK ii
And saramonic lav mic battery powered, the mic is TRRS connector, I tried it in tascam 3/4 channel 3.5 mm but it couldn't work. I have a 6.35mm mono jack so I am thinking of trying it in channel 1 that comes with xlr and 6.35 mm input. So will this TRRS to 6.35 mono jack work on Tascam dr 60d mkii?
Probably not. You'll want a TRRS to TRS adapter like the RODE SC3: geni.us/6weD
Hello! Could you please suggest for which pin & which microphone is best for youtube video recording. i need to connect to my laptop. could u pl help me to reply........ thanks, mahesh
+WebPostBox does your laptop have a headset input (microphone and headphones in one 3.5mm jack?)
+WebPostBox if you do have a headset input, one of these should work: ua-cam.com/video/CIWJzTrF6qM/v-deo.html
Hi, What are the best mics to use for sport interviews using a canon T6i? I have a Movo Executive Lavalier Clip-on Interview Microphone but it does not seem to work.
Thanks.
If you are miking two people, I prefer to use a reporter's hand-held mic like the RODE Reporter. That's what I did here, recording the sound to my phone with the RODE iXLR and then syncing the audio to the video footage from my camera in post: ua-cam.com/video/4l0yNknm1dQ/v-deo.html
But if you just want a single lavalier microphone, I like the Aputure A.lav which we compared to several others here: ua-cam.com/video/CZKs1U1GA84/v-deo.html
If you are interested in the RODE Reporter and iXLR option, here are the two pieces you'll need:
RODE Reporter Microphone: amzn.to/2v9wCis
RODE iXLR: amzn.to/2vWeLcp
Good luck!
Thank you...
Another quality video Curtis. You covered a lot of the questions I have had about mics. Thanks for the info.

Very interesting, thx a lot. Do so called Lavalier microphones exist with full XLR i.e. no condenser types?
Would you be so kind as to advise me on a good brand of:
- 3.5mm Male to 3.5mm Male, 1.5' length. (Zoom H1 Line Out to GH4)
- 3.5mm Male to 3.5mm Female, 10' length. (Zoom H1 Line In to MicJ 044 Lav)
- Your recommendation for making the MicJ 044_MonoTS to StereoTRS
Thank you Curtis... really appreciate your help.
Ciqu Films for the 3.5mm male to 3.5mm female 10' length, I like the RODE VC1: amzn.to/1d8p42k
I don't have specific recommendations for the other two because I don't use those, but I have had very good experiences with monoprice.com for most cables I've needed over the years.
@@curtisjudd thank you so much for your advice.
The EOS 90D needs a microphone with a 3.5mm TRS connector. Most lavaliers have this, or consumer grade wireless microphone systems.
@@curtisjuddThank you! I couldn't find anything online, and I've got this film school exam, so I really appreciate your quick feedback.
Thank you Curtis, for again this very informative video!
One question:
Do I need an adapter like the VXLR+ from Rode to make sure Phantompower from a audio recorder is transformed to plugin power?
Well, hi again,
