Mike can talk into a 1970s Burger King drive-thru mic and make it sound good.
just want to say thank you, youre the reason i chose the mkh 416 a couple years ago which ultimately helped my online career a lot. thank you!
Mr Mike releases another video and we all get exited as it always amazing content. Thank You
The CMIT 5u is so smooth. If price point wasn't an issue, I'd happily switch my 416 for it.
The 416 is the standard. But the schoeps is like.. the rediculous luxury version
Used a lot of crappy mics during my transition to video and finally bit the bullet and got the miniCMIT as it is more convenient for my needs. I had it boomed on a stand during an interview the other day and the person was very emotional and moved backwards as they wept. The miniCMIT was definitely forgiving as they moved off the sweet spot. As for listening to the miniCMIT on Sony MDR-V6 i can only say "i was deaf but now I can hear". listening to the output of this mic just opened up my ears to a new level. there is something magical to the sound. i had done a lot of tests with other mics and for me the schoeps sounds wonderful for voice.
We should talk. I can give you a lot of insight on the CMIT 5U. I've used it for years on movie and TV sets.
You do a great work through the years. I really appreciate. Thank you very much!
I love the sound of this mic, what a great comparison video, thank you so much Mic, I'd love to have this mic in my locker!!!!!
Hey hey Mr. Junkie! Listen, you had me at ‘hold still, you’ in the opening shot,😆 then you lost me at “this will set you back at about…oh… 2,400.00’😧 But THEN, you got me back after I listened to that Hi DB shelf presence booster! Wow, I was already thinking of ways I might use just that ONE feature of it in the future. Also, hearing you describe all the ways and reasons you would use a mike (ha!) like that, the price point began to feel much more reasonable. I can definately see where a boom guy would love an 89 oz mic to hold up for hours at a time. Excellent video, I learned a LOT! Thanks so much…👏🏽🥇🙋🏽♀️
I have purchased three different mics because of side-by-sides done on this channel. The Synco Mic D2 is one of them. I really love that mic for what I do and it's been a solid purchase. Zero regrets. But to hear it next to the Schoeps CMIT 5U was a bit humbling! Lol.
To your point, Mike, the Synco certainly isn't 90% worse than the Schoeps, so I definitely feel like I have a great mic for 90% less money, but the comparison between the two was night and day!
I can hear why the Schoeps is $2,500. Thankfully, it's beyond my means and my needs, otherwise I might own a 4th mic from this channel!
Thanks, Mike. Really impressive shotgun. I loved the side-by-side.
Another great vid man. Mike, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate what you did for my sound. Thanks man!!!
The 416 has a very obvious added presence to it which, in my opinion, works very well. The CMIT 5u looks and sounds exceptional but is clearly designed for boom operators and does not sound "better" to me, just different.
The 80 Hz filter is a sharp (18 dB/octave) high-pass. It's good for cutting out room rumble and some types of handling noise. The 300 Hz filter on the other hand has a much gentler (only 6 dB/octave) rolloff, and is intended to balance out proximity effect in close-miking situations without limiting the low-frequency bandwidth per se. The high-frequency boost isn't meant to add presence--it's set too high up in the spectrum for that--but to compensate for the sound-dulling effect of heavy windscreens.
This mic sounds so lovely. Very buttery and smooth
The Schoeps mic is much more balanced on the low end. Since you have a naturally deep voice, my ears “hear” it as the most balanced and natural. The Deity is nice as I agree is nice and flat and easy to fix with proper EQ. Thanks for the great video
I love your terminology for different windscreens... clown nose, dead cat, zeppelin.
One thing I read about the difference between the CMIT and the 416 is how they handle background noise. For example, if you're on location and filming dialog with cars driving back and forth, the Schoeps will capture the car sounds more naturally. The 416, on the other hand, will try to cut the car sounds out, and you might hear part of the car sound driving by, but then the falloff kicks in and removes the car sounds. This is the main reason for the Schoeps' popularity and higher price tag.
The Schoeps cmit 5u is a fantastic microphone ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- not only for voice recording in the studio/field but also for recording acoustic instruments.
In many ways it has the same sound/capabilities of a large diaphragm mic.
Great review and side-by-side! It clearly demonstrates the law of diminishing returns. The more money you spend, the more subtle the sonic differences are going to be. Differences that "regular" listeners using non-audiophile home speakers or ear pods won't even be able to detect. I've used the Synco D-2 on all my voice over projects for about a year now, and none of my clients have asked: "Could you please record this again on a 416?" The problem is that very few have heard of a Synco microphone, but do know the Sennheiser, so they want you to go with what they know. I'd rather keep the Synco and spend my money on acoustically treating my recording space, than pay a fortune for a Schoeps that was built to withstand the low temperatures of Antarctica, and the extreme humidity of tropical rainforests. BTW I have just bought the MKH 8060, the more modern version of the 416, just so I can honestly tell my clients I am using a real Sennheiser.
I've used my Synco for voice-over work for almost two years now. It's exceptional for the price. And, truth be told, the four-times-more-expensive 416 is only marginally better.
Awesome review! And yes, you sound great on anything! 🙌🏽
I use an NTG3….
…The 5u sounds absolutely awesome 🤩 the off axis rejection at 90 degrees was excellent 👌🏽
Nice to know that if you really do want the best, you will have to pay the big bucks.
Mike, I wanted to say, you are a God send. I've just purchased a CAD m179 and an Audient Evo4, and I wouln;t have know what to do if it wasnt for you. But I think more importantly than your videos teaching me what is good and what is not so good., your videos give me the courage and confidence to actually get out there, grab a mic and record somethign amazing...
WOW ABSOLUTE worthy video!! ( very expected it for years in my list) GREAT WORK MIKE
So excited to see this mic featured!
The low impedance on the CMIT is much lower than a vast array of shotgun mics. This means a quitter mic. Also the polar pattern is such that you can play angles really well. This is helpful in the field as it helps you place undesired noise away from the main subject. Which leads to the next feature: the rear end rejection is also superior to many shotgun mics. In addition and finally, from a field recording perspective, the proximity effect blows away other shot gun mics. This means you can gather more usable sound, as you can capture further away sound, as if it where in effect closer to your mic. Great field mic.
Well to be fair, i think universaly Schoeps makes maybe together with DPA the best small Diaphram Capsules in the Industry.
They are known to be perfectly Flat, extremly accurate and natural. AND as i mentioned several times, Off Axis Colouration is the most overlooked but extremly critical Spec. Everybody can make a good sounding Cardioid on Axis but they show how good they are in the Off Axis Colouration.
For Example : For Orchestral Recording you easaly reach 50 Mics. If you mix with Mics with bad Off Axis you will have very bad inteferiences.
Expecially in Enviorments with very high demand of quality Orchester and Film you have to use the best of the best cause most of the time there is no going back.
So i know you know Mike, but the Price is absolutly right.
what do you think about the cmc1 and is it equal to the cmc6 for corporate video work ? using mk41 capsule
@boothjunkie I disagree. It IS a VO mic. A studio I frequent in Cleveland uses it. Comparatively the u87 is over $3K. So... is the CMIT really "expensive"? A shotgun you should demo is the Neumann KMR 81i ($1600). Much warmer than the 416. I like it better than the 416. In fact, the 415T, the precursor to the 416, is warmer. And we should all bow to the VO King, Ernie Anderson, for pioneering the use of the 415T (416) for use in VO.
What a lovely microphone! Smooth in every sense like the Schoeps MK41, which i prefer indoors.

@@frederikgroborsch3367 but does cmc 6?have more amplification than the cmc1 ?
I love the vids man, plz keep uploading it makes my day
love the sound CMIT 5u, but in someways I love my NTG5 more: a low 10 dbA of self noise, and it's a rather hot mic too, thus very good alue-4-money in my opinion.
Wonder how well a Schoeps CMIT 5U would work on say, a Sony FX3 using the Sony (provided) XLR-H1 XLR Handle Unit. Have you any experience to share? Thanks.
Been meaning to get that shotgun pop filter. B&H shipped one out to me this afternoon
I dont know, I dont know, I dont know, I love your honesty!
just enjoying, how that man taking things about microphones
This is an excellent video...thank you. I'm on the fence with the mini and the 5U for my VO Booth. Thinking I won't need the add'l features of the 5U and the mini is the perfect choice. would be great to hear the MIni next to the 5U in your booth.
The CMIT does sound fantastic! ...But does it sound 4.5 times the price of the NTG5 fantastic? I afraid I don't think so, at least not in a fully treated vocal booth environment. And while I loved my 416, I honestly think the NTG5 sounds better on my voice, so much so I sold my 416! If I ever do upgrade it would probably be to an MKH 8050 or 8060... Unless something even better comes out before then of course!
The brightness of the 416 is more flattering for voiceovers and dialogue in my opinion
Really depends on what or who is being recorded. That's why most location sound professionals have a mic locker.
Great video Mike! The 5u also comes in chroma blue or green for keying out in vfx work 😃
ppl get the blue 5u one more but isn't green screen used more often ?
one year old, still really cool and informative vid! very cool! 👏
Will You review Rode NTG-3 shotgun mic.... Please 🥺🥺🥺 with mkh 416 & Cmit 5u compare too....
The off axis frequency response uniformity was extremely impressive on the Schoeps, but like you said, not really much of a selling point for VO. The Schoeps also sounds very accurate and smooth, but there’s just something that the 416 does to voices that sounds so right, especially for certain genres.
Sounds better than the 416 in my opinion. Way less harsh. The Schoeps probalby gets less comb filtering of reverb based on the polar pattern graphs? So maybe the Schoeps is also a little more forgiving for indoor boom applications.
I own the Synco Mic D2, definitely because of Mr. DelGaudio (thanks man), and I can't say enough good things about it. It's always surprising to see that the greatest disparity in microphones isn't really the sound but more so the price. However, with that being said, the 5u sounds amazingly warm/smooth with additional capabilities my D2 doesn't have. I'm just not so sure how I would feel about swinging $2,400 dollars around on the end of my boom pole. Certainly nervous. Potentially stressed out.
Hi Mike! Hey, what pre-amp are you using primarily for VO these days?
Thank you for this video. It’s exactly the info I was looking for.
Longitudinal man LONGITUDINAL!
CMIT is legendary in production sound. Interested to what what pop-filter you are using ...
Hey Mike
Would you mind sharing the camera lens that you used in this video ?
He says the Deity is good if you have a bright voice. I'm going to sound dumb, but how do I tell what kind of voice I have? I wouldn't call my voice deep or high pitched, but all I know it's somewhere in the middle, which seems like a very wide margin for error.
Mic sounds great! Listening in my car. CMIT 5u does sounds better! You make most mics sounds great! Good review.
Fantastic sounding mic
Silky smooth. Limousine style.
Well Shotgun mics weren't traditionally voiceover mics..
I remember about 15 or so years ago when one of the
voice artists I worked with mentioned the 416 becoming popular in LA for VO
Awesome vid! Thanks Mike!
NGL, that CMIT sounds sweet.
Would love to see you do a comparison between the Cmit and the MKH 50
The cmit5u has a lot, a lot more reach than the 50. I have used both extensively as a boom op and have never enjoyed the bottom end of the 50. To me it's a bit boxy.
On a side note, I do own the cmit5u, 416, and a Sennheiser 8040. I much prefer the 8040 to the mkh50 as well. The 8040 is fantastically detailed, smooth and wide!
I like the chroma green, limited editon version of the Schoeps
Another good comparison would be the MKH-50.
15:44 wow, check out the presence on the Azden!! It makes the CMIT sound really dark.
hmm, to me the mids suffer though. As a re-recording / mixing engineer Id take the CMIT take over the Azden every time. I have enough EQs to choose from XD
was going to ask a question but see you dont read / reply the comments
I prefer the Sennheiser MKH 416
Magically timely! Yep, the Schoeps makes even the 416 sound ....kinda trashy. CMIT5 is just sweet, smooth detail!
Also, small thing to bear in mind with the Hook filter - if you're REALLY on it and really popping hard, it IS physically connected to the mic body so can transmit wind-impact bumps. Not a huge issue but worth bearing in mind.
I just don't believe that Synco D2 sounds remotely similar to Schoeps without post-production adjustments (eq, comp and so on). Once upon a time, I "jumped on the bacon" for a guaranteed serious comparison of this Chinese ham (lemon) with MKH416. It was on sale for about $100, so I gave it a try. Three times more noise, horrible tonality, emphasizing some very unpleasant high mids, just a cheap shunt.
It's also pretty stupid that Mike sounds good on absolutely everything, so it's hard to compare anything. 🙂
Is it expensive? Yes. Is it also very pretty? Also yes.
SANKEN ?
Why does it cost $2400? The sound first and foremost. I prefer the clarity of the Schoeps..... price be damned.
Oh my god that high shelf hurts my ears.
It's meant not as a tone control, but as compensation for the dulling effect of heavy windscreens.
NTG-3 beats both of these honestly, smack dab in the middle of these two mics and $600
ok your not using that mic to talk on because you moved to 90' of it and your voice was still just as loud.
Awesome video. Thanks Mike!
I'm a boom op and use these mics all the time.
Main differences i've noticed is that the 416s pattern is way narrower, it's sharp. If you're off, you'll hear it right away.
The CMITs pattern is wider and it's more forgiving if you're off a little. The CMIT is also more sensitive to RFI.
Hello fellow pole swinger. The humidity can get you with the CMIT, and any other Schoeps mic, unless you properly manage the acclimation of pressure and temperature when moving outdoors in humid weather.
@@SoundSpeedsyes, I have ended up in a few less than good situations with the CMIT. Backup-416 has never failed to save the day tho 😁
1. It has a short tube, so the tube works only in higher freruencies, compared to a 416. It is a less effective shotgun like all other short ones for general use. 2. It allows a back lobe to achieve lower response on the side. This is good if you boom from above and there is no ceiling or the ceiling is very high or it is treated, because there is nothing loud there in these cases. In other words, tt is between hypercardioid and figure of 8. That is all there is to cmit 5 and mini cmit. The noise is high, as bad as a 416, but this may not be important at close range or in exteriors. The pattern is more important in most scenarios. In interiors with low ceilings it is inferior to mkh8060 and ntg5 and any hypercardioid. Comparing different tube lengthe does not make sense, and comparing a specialized mic like this in q booth does not make any sense.
what's a good microphone in humidity ?
